This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi David! NGH!
Avatar 7:13pm hyde:

@Flash yeah, it's a good one. love the late 60's Corbucci films
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Scraps:

Probably the first John Zorn album that achieved a little bit of mass success
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Hey there Scraps! definitely the first one I ever heard
Avatar 7:16pm northguineahills:

It was the first Zorn record I got.
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

When the clock had struck midnight and we finished singing auld lang syne, me and my compañero inaugurated the year by singing this in karaoke, which i did not expect or plan but it completely blew my mind
Avatar 7:22pm northguineahills:

I have the Story of Sacco and Vanzetti sndtrk on LP>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Scraps:

I love Zorn's =Locus Solus=, and even before that I was confused by =Archery=. That was my much early foray into avant-gardeness, all because of Carla Bley and the New Music Distribution Service
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Scraps:

and I was intrigued with =Locus Solus= by the presence of Peter Blegvad, a weird entry point to Zorn, I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Scraps:

Oh, I love Catherine Ribeiro + 2Bis
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

not actually familiar with those releases, Scraps! gotta do some homework
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

this is really one of my favorite vocal performances, ever
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:31pm northguineahills:

@Scraps: I love Locus Solus! (Christian Marclay was also involved w/ that as well). Check it out Evan!
Avatar 7:31pm northguineahills:

...and a hiphop turntabilist from Harlem called the Wiz Kid.
Avatar 7:32pm northguineahills:

....and a who's who of NYC downtown musicians in the early 80s....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Scraps:

=Locus Solus= is great, in my opinion, but it's way out there, even for Zorn. Well, Zorn's early stuff is more out there than his later stuff.

There is a live Locus Solus, for his 50th birthday; that's not what i'm talking about.
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

yeah, it looks pretty essential, actually! there's a lot of Zorn I haven't spent much time with

Avatar 7:36pm geezerette:

haha. BINGO!
Avatar 7:36pm geezerette:

Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

lyrics to this one, if you take the time to look them up and translate them, are like perfect anti-patriarchal napalm
Avatar 7:39pm northguineahills:

@Scraps: Yes, I have the cd version and compared it to my friend's LP, and you're correct.

Well, when it comes to Zorn, you might be busy going through his discography, although it might only take a 8 weeks to go through as opposed to Merzbow, which might take years....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Scraps:

(actually, it doesn't which one you get, LP or CD. The old Locus Solus, the 1983 [I think] one. I'll stop!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Scraps:

oops, i crossposted with northguineahills!

Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

@LD: really weird LP all the way through
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

@Scraps: what a cool word
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm melinda:

Hola, explorers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Scraps:

oh dear, though:

"Apparently, the Clothilde EPs represent a really dark time for the woman behind them, known as Élisabeth Beauvais. She was simply a sensitive teenage girl that was shanghaied into singing experimental pop songs with twisted and dark lyrics (that she totally objected to) against her will. She was forced to wear whatever nasty clothing her producer gave her and project an odd, unpleasant image to the world. She had no freedom and no say in any aspect of the Clothilde project, being forced to sing, mannerise, and act exactly how her producer told her to. Her friends and classmates made fun of her, her fellow chanteuses rejected her. The poor girl didn't want any part of it - she just desperately wanted to obey her mother, celebrity Gisèle Parry, who just wished for her daughter to have her own stab at fame. She felt manipulated by her label and alienated from her own music and became very depressed and scared. She hid herself and ran away until the label gave up trying to track her down. The whole ordeal ended up totally ruining her life; she had always wanted to be an actress, but whenever she even thought about it, she would have flashbacks from her time as Clothilde and simply freeze up. It is the heartbreaking story of a poor girl manipulated into doing something she wanted no part of. It is the very definition of evil, soulless major-label music."
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

wow that sucks SO MUCH
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

lyrics to this song may provide some balm: I live in the wind
My body is a flame
I show teeth
Flowers and gendarmes

The sun follows me
I do not know God
The world is my bed
The wind blows where I want

Like a chimera
Like a drunk animal
My moto-panther
Trembling between my knees

And you, Blanch 'Neige
Poor dove
With your sweet figure
You Blanch 'Snow
Big dove
Return to your jams

Black leather boots
I am the woman fire
The jaguar woman
Ceremonial neck

My fingers are as much
Mobile syringes
My arms snakes
Long, fragile snakes

My kidneys are iron
And my satin belly
My thighs in the air
Play like dolphins

You Blanch 'Snow
Young rumbiere
With your rosy mouth
You Blanch 'Snow
Pretty meme
Go make pies with currants

I like sometimes
The pale and hot twinks
Who are melting on me
Comm 'eagle on the lamb

I like brutal
Large brass necks
Who keeps a hat
To confuse me

When it's finished
They lie like old men
A little dislocated
Blue lakes under the eyes

And you Snow White
Cute white
Sensual as a mummy
You Snow White
Tender bobonne
So go blow your husband

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Scraps:

behaving like a mor-on!
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

this (We Like It So) is a pretty politically significant work for Sparrow: if I understand it correctly, he comes out here in support of the Trinidadian political party ONR, despite being a lifelong vocal supporter of the PNM
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

@Doug: there's a light dusting down here in NC, and we've got cancellations all over!
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

This coming after he took about a decade off from political songs due to disillusionment with Solomon of the PNM, though I confess the intricacies of all this elude me entirely. I don't think the ONR faired well, ultimately, but it was a sort of left challenge to the dominant liberal party and Sparrow's alignment with it is remarkable in this context

(I think)
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

it's also just a brutal takedown of the lumpenproletariat mentality
Avatar 8:37pm northguineahills:

I need fingerless gloves, I didn't turn my heat on at home. Luckily my jacket has fingerless liners.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm coelacanth∅:

this article (if the link works) goes into some detail.
...it seems to me the creator of clothilde is fairly innocent and fairly brilliant, and it's thanks to Elizabeth's asshole mother, and maybe Elizabeth's own lack of clarity with herself and communication with him, that he may not have even known how Elizabeth objected to being clothilde.
if he'd have known he might've waited to find someone who knew and agreed with his objective.

yeh it's too bad. it would've worked out better for everybody if he'd found someone who was into what he was trying to do.
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

it's part of the dilemma of the creative producer... the Temptations weren't real into performing Norman Whitfield's vision either

or Vanilla Fudge with Shadow Morton
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

not Sparrow's best arrangement on record, but damn what a statement
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm coelacanth∅:

..even Jimi Hedrix, to some degree.

Meanwhile, the NYT is worried about how Seth Meyers will handle the harassment issue at the Golden Globes. Jesus, these people are dicks.

High school history class, c. 1975, we played the 7" of "One Bad Apple" on the turntable in the back of class at 33 1/3 right in the middle of a lecture. Teacher liked us, so it was cool. Another time one of my buddies brought an oscillator to class. We played a high frequency at low, slowly increasing volume. The teacher is all, "What is going on?!"
