Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Rob Kopp:

@Cecile: Nothing with my mood or the words; it was just the chord progression in the song, that was almost the same as Burt Bacharach's song
Avatar 3:22pm Brian Cat:

There's some Plastic Ono Band influence going on here.
Avatar 3:23pm Cecile:

Same here, it sounded a bit like Carmen's too. And personally, he rips stuff off from a lot of people.
  3:23pm Morgan:

thank you Im looking them up now. Sweet voice
Avatar 3:24pm Brian Cat:

Cecile, Agree, not a big Carmen fan, in spite of his fame.
Avatar 3:25pm Brian Cat:

Never gonna fall in love again is totally about Pet Sounds.

I love dolly mixtures but their stuff is really hard to get hold of. Originals are really expensive.
Avatar 5:12pm djsheilab:

Neil in Somerset—Yeah, their originals are tough. Thankfully there was a box set a few years back that pretty much has everything.
Avatar 5:12pm Brian Cat:

Sheila, a lot of the 2017 records you have been playing recently have a definite 80s sound. Any comment on that? I like it, I love the 80s, it was my musical heydays.
Avatar 5:12pm djsheilab:

Hey Mike tp + Peter in Seattle!
Avatar 5:14pm djsheilab:

Brian Cat—I think it's because I'm always looking for melody. And the 80s had a whole lot of it. Hence being attracted to the new bands who have that 80s aesthetic. So much new music is rhythm based, and it just doesn't move me in the same way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm fred:

@fred van helsing: Hey! It's been a while... I thought about you last week, thinking you might like this show. Maybe not punk enough, but definitely female-fronted

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Rob Kopp:

I say the same about the 60's. At that time you still had little SONGS. And no synthesizer :-)

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Michael 98145:

  5:19pm Neil in Singers:

Oops!Just popped over to discogs. Dolly mixture 3 CD set £75!
Avatar 5:19pm Christine:

I feel pretty strongly that melody has gone to shit in most chart pop today. Even some stuff with awful production in the 80s and 90s still had a decent melody.
Avatar 5:19pm Brian Cat:

Rob, I agree about the lack of melody. I kind-of dig electronic music. The hits of today are not all synths, they are all about electronic sounds and the sounds are just not musical. I don't know what the major labels are trying to show us.
Avatar 5:20pm djsheilab:

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Michael 98145:

are the major labels still alive ?
Avatar 5:20pm Christine:

@Brian Cat - "not musical" - I think that's so true.
  5:21pm Jocelyn:

A lot of modern pop just misses the point of what pop is. I always ask myself, exactly who are the audience they're writing this for? No melody, no real flow.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Rob Kopp:

I don't like synthesizers. But of course it's the music from when you grow up (when you're in your teens) that you will always remember the best. I'm from '54 and started to listen to music in '66 and that year will always be the best pop year for me.

Avatar 5:27pm still b/p:

It's funny how the taste systems of the brain go reaching and blocking and shifting. 1966 was an outstanding year for pop -- the top 100 is an unBELIEVABLE array. But I like music from nearly a hundred years ago through today -- though surely not all of it all the way through.
Avatar 5:28pm Christine:

@Brian Cat - agree! But there's also the whole 'poptimist' thing in the indie press that tries to intellectualise some woeful music, which I don't get.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 5:28pm Rob Kopp:

I'm a 60's man with an eye for new music. Am listening to SBB for 2 years now? In a way it's strange (and a very big compliment) that an American deejay is pointing me to new Dutch artists like Sevdaliza and Luwten. I don't hear them on the regular Dutch stations, but that's probably because I'm not listening to Dutch radio

I think the 80s are to modern kids what the 50s and 60s for us Xers and late Boomers. Far enough away so you can find gems in the trash that original listeners left behind and also you have a distance from the music while still loving it.
