A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good morning trouble!
Off to the dentist, maybe I can listen while I get my cleaning. That makes me wonder if there are dentist/doctors offices in the broadcast range that play wfmu. Anyone in the Hudson Valley? You’ll have another client in me, if you do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Trouble:

good luck with that Kevlicki, the dentist visit and finding one who will play WFMU!
  9:31am Woo:

Last week my dentist was playing country Christmas music, one of the worst categories of music. I didn't say anything. It's his place, he can play what he wants.

fantastic opening set. is the F-word "cotton"?
  9:37am Sam:

Good morning. J'adore le painting de l'iceberg!
  9:38am queems:

agreed about the wool. i have a million hats but i only wear the wool ones i’ve made during weather like this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am melinda:

I need weather variety too. But I wouldn't mind if it never got below 25 or so. It's 1º here and I don't want to go outside, but one needs daylight contact w/eyeballs for proper melatonin production.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Trouble:

no steveo, cotton is s grand knit for summer. the f word is fleece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Scraps:

When I’m at the dentist, I bring headphones. It’s his office, but I’m paying.

@The Oscar, I love Webs! Very hard not to spend hundreds of dollars each time I’m there.
Avatar 9:42am OTB:

Wow, somebody sure likes 'Trane... Sounds great, though. Wonderful sounds on this frigid AM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am steveo:

What, the French don't have their own word for iceberg, Sam? Fleece, ah fleece. Well I think i deserve half a point because isn't fleece made of cotton?
Avatar 9:43am bobdoesthings:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am The Oscar:

@LCBD I was just there! Every year my girlfriend gets a giftcard there from my folks, so we usually make the pilgrimage shortly after Christmas (as well as several other times a year). I'm not a knitter myself, but I do enjoy wandering the aisles touching things :)
  9:47am judy from croton:

How wonderful. Davy graham. Really started something over there in england.
  9:48am judy from croton:

Fleece is made entirely of synthetics in our modern parlance (10$ word!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Trouble:

no, oscar. i saw it from the highway, but resisted a visit. I did not know that it was so huge! now perhaps i should regret my decision... I am trying to knit out of my stash for now, there is a lot of wool piling up...
  9:50am LCBD:

@The Oscar, nice! What a great gift. We pass it on our frequent trips from CT to VT. I am a knitter (with a big stash of yarn so I need to stay away.)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Ken From Hyde Park:

Fleece fibers wind up in the streams, rivers, lakes and oceans where they get into the food supply. Who knows what the effects of that are?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Trouble:

fleece is made from polyester. polyester never breaks down, never.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am The Oscar:

@Trouble It truly is massive! There's also Northampton Wools, which is not as impressive, but is notable as the namesake of a Thurston Moore side project.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Trouble:

I love that part of the world @ oscar. so i will be back. we also discovered a killer bbq place and local gluten free bear!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Webhamster Henry:

Fleece is a kind of artificial felt; perhaps in the near future there can be a felt made of mycoTEX fibers that you grow new every week or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am melinda:

I think I need someone to custom knit me a couple of wool hats. The ones in stores and at craft fairs are either too scratchy or don't fit comfortably.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am melinda:

@Henry fungus is the future!
Avatar 10:00am Fernando P:

Hi Trouble!
please, dont ever stop playing Gal! Her voice is sunshine to my ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am melinda:

I saw Paul Stamets the mycologist wearing a fungus hat on a podcast video, actually. It looked like leather or felt.
Avatar 10:03am bobdoesthings:

@melinda- that guy is kinda a nut though.. i saw him on JRE and did a little research and it seems like the mycology community, by and large, rolls their eyes at that guy., but i dunno, was an amusing podcast at least
Avatar 10:03am northguineahills:

It's cold enough for me to wear a hoody today! (I had one morning where I got to wear my winter coat). Wife called me from Brooklyn, to tell me her building's heat is out, ouch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Webhamster Henry:

It's 8° here in Kingston, but my steam heat is blasting away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am melinda:

@bob that's kind of disappointing. I didn't watch the whole thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Webhamster Henry:

Paul Stamets may actually BE a mushroom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Ken From Hyde Park:

There are mushroom-based packaging materials that can take the place of styrofoam, so that's cool.
Avatar 10:06am northguineahills:

I believe SA is +2 UTC, so 7 hours ahead of us in EST?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Trouble:

thanks north guinea hills!
Avatar 10:08am bobdoesthings:

@melinda - I could be wrong , I just remember I scrolled through a ton of comments on a mycology online forum about him as being self-aggrandizing and a a guy who spins a lot of yarns.. but then again.. these were comments on the internet. so a bit unfair of me to judge. but that podcast was amusing and did get me to look into mycology more, so theres that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Trouble:

no worries, Fernando P, i will never stop playing gal costa!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am BronwynB:

I'm reading a playwrights guidebook right now since im in the midst of writing a play, but the novel im cheating on with the guidebook is Robert Coover's Huck Out West, which is supposed to be about Huck Finn as an adult, but it's really about some dark n'gritty dude who bears little resemblance to the original character (he shoots a guy, for fuck's sake). Kind of like Luke Skywalker in the Last Jedi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Trouble:

duhhhh, i just finished 'the little virtues' by natalia ginzburg
  10:42am kevlicki:

Sadly they play a commercial Hudson valley station which, typically, is playing cheesy 90’s rock and 80’s pop tunes. Radio here is stuck 20 Years in the past
  10:42am Thelma:

I'm reading Keys to the Rain, the definitive Dylan encyclopedia by Oliver Trager, and I just finished A Friend of the Devil, the Glorification of the Outlaw from Robin Hood to Rap, by John Kruth. Both books are highly recommended for music freaks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Webhamster Henry:

I'm a huge Saunders fan! His (kind of) children's books The Very Persistent Gappers of Fripp and The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil are enduring fables.

George Saunders is an author I should have read but haven't, I went to a reading years ago and it was hilarious.
  10:59am herb.nyc:

Reading "arbitrary stupid goal" by Tamara shopsin. I've never even eaten at shopsin's(and not sure if I want to deal with it). This is both a funny and serious book. ($1 at thrift shop!). Then will skim thru Simon Doonan's "extreme glamour" for he's gayly funny, and wanna start the new Sal Maida book (I bought bec of Todd's recent interview on wfmu).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Adrian in London:

@Lixiviated Life @BronwynB @Webmaster Happy On your recommendation I have just bought Lincoln in the Bardo. £1.99 on Kindle so not too big a punt if I don't like it. My current reading, since that seems to be what we're chatting about, is My Hundred Lovers by Australian writer Susan Johnson, which is very good, and next will be The Power by Naomi Alderman, a novel about a world in which roles are reversed and women have, well, the power.
