Carpenters, yes....
Bandcamp may have tipped me off that this show was coming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Gary:

Bandcamp, ha ha ... hey there, cklequ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm cklequ:

They send me updates......
I'm following you, but not in a creepy way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Gary:

I love following peeps on Bandcamp, but I gotta update
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy, Gary and everyone! Looking forward to all the different spins on the Carpenters!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Gary:

Avatar 7:04pm glenn:

sure, but can they build a house?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Gary:

Ha ha, hey Glenn!
Avatar 7:06pm hyde:

when i was young
i listened to the radio
waitin' for my favorite songs
when they played i'd sing along
it made me smile
Avatar 7:07pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Funny, I played slowed-down Carpenters on the show today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

I'm smiling now, Hyde! And I owe you an email
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

@Kenzo [thumbs up]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Gary:

FYI the title of the album whose cover we see to our left is Richard Likes It Slow
Avatar 7:14pm northguineahills:

I know kim gordon was a karen carpenter fan, and besides the cover they did, SY also dedicated a song to her.
Avatar 7:15pm northguineahills:

Clicky starred so I can find the archive. I'll be leaving work in 15 minutes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Gary:

NGH! Yes, we'll be playing both at some point tonight
Avatar 7:16pm hyde:

@Gary oh yeah, there was talk of Lowell. i have some 10 days or so of vacationing left. i do have a Lowell itinerary, but lemme know if you are heading this way or not!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm cklequ:

I've always been partial to the Thinking Fellers Union cover of Superstar over the Sonic Youth version. But i'm a sucker for those fellers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Gary:

I have not yet heard that cover-of-a-cover-of-a-cover-of-a-cover, cklequ
Avatar 7:19pm northguineahills:

I saw the SY version on 120 minutes and immediately bought the tribute album (i was in HS), it eventually led me to the Carpenters original music. I love the Thinking Fellers Union, but have yet to hear their cover.
Avatar 7:20pm glenn:

Avatar 7:20pm hyde:

@ngh man, i love Thinking Fellers Union too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm cklequ:

They both came out around the same time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm cklequ:

And they're sort of eerily similar.

The first time i heard the Carpenters was via Sonic Youth and it blew me away. Then i heard the Thinking Fellers version and it blew me away again.
Avatar 7:33pm northguineahills:

Ok, I'm out, thanks Gary. Might see you before 10!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Gary:

Happy, trails, NGH!
Avatar 7:37pm geezerette:

Gary, what a crazily beautiful concept!!! I was not a fan but I'm beginning to see the light where I used to see only lightness.
Also never heard their Beach Boys appropriation before.

Howdy fellow shoppers!

hi chums! Ready for Carpenters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Parq:

The Carps' "Superstar" was itself a cover, natch. Famously, their changing the lyric "sleep with you" to "be with you" broke a logjam among music industry types, who loved the song but felt it could never be a hit if it spelled out that the girl actually fucked the guy. Apparently, this simple and obvious change never occurred to any of them
Avatar 8:19pm hyde:

ahhh i love this cover SO MUCH
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Gary:

  8:22pm Santos L Halper:

Loving it all Gary, looking forward to catching the first hour later. Is there a bad version of Superstar out there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Parq:

Sí, mi jefe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm listener james from westwood:

ahhh...was hoping ros and sonic youth would make it in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Gary:

Santos L!!!!
Avatar 8:24pm still b/p:

Hola, Carpenteros.
This SY version sounds like some Donovan-channeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gary:

Good ears, b/p!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:27pm Parq:

This mix of the Carps' version is possibly the best version of them all.
Avatar 8:28pm still b/p:

Wonder if Richard squirms to hear dry isolated elements. "It needs all my stuff...the stuff..where's my studio...stuff?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Gary:

ha ha
  8:29pm Santos L Halper:

Whose bass?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm melinda:

I like all the studio stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Parq:

Stili, yeh, kind of nice to imagine that, isn't it?
Avatar 8:32pm glenn:

joe osborn is probably the bass player.
Avatar 8:33pm tim abdellah:

OMG - what a great show idea! Hi Gary and Everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Parq:

Someone could do a similar show like this exploring Leon Russel. Somebody could. Just saying.

The Osborn Top 40
With a recording career that spanned three decades, one can assume there might be a few hit songs along the way. In Joe Osborn’s case, the number is around 200. This list contains songs that appeared on the pop charts. According to Joe, it’s a little incomplete due to the fact that he can’t remember every session. In his days in Nashville, Osborn played on53 certifiable number one songs on the country charts.

And since I'm giving unsolicited advice, if you really wanted to get meta, you could throw something into this show from the Brit skinhead compilation "If Oy Were a Carpenter".

For better or worse...A memory-image forever stuck/associated with Carpenters since 71-72: a large felt banner created by students at my Catholic school and hung in the auditorium foyer, depicting a simple turntable circle and tonearm, and the words, "We've only just begun."

Sigh, No, turns out faulty memory on my part. The comp I'm thinking of was "Strength Through Oi". (I misspelled it "Oy" to boot.) "If Oi Were a Carpenter" was the title of Lester Bangs's last piece.

But dammit, it *should* have been a real comp!

Perry and Karen together, singing bits of each other's songs. I think Perry's reading lyrics off cue cards. Don't watch right now, of course, but enjoy with family over the holidays.

Australian band, I think

I despise plenty and I love plenty of artists' music/ things in general, but 100% of the time anyone's said "you either love it or hate it", I've either loved it, or, most of the time, didn't hate it but didn't love it.
the carpenters I can only take in tiny doses; but the covers can be pretty stellar.
  9:48pm Funky16corners:

I love a lot of their songs, but I will always stop to listen to Karen’s voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gary:

The stripped-down versions have given me a great new appreciation of her voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm coelacanth∅:

yeah I liked that, something you played before - I was away from the computer but I heard what sounded like a demo.
- that's the case with many of Paul's Beatles songs. the demos or early takes, without the slippery sugar smothering them, are much preferred.
  9:53pm Funky16corners:

I love this song. Theme to a weird but cool movie
