Miss those Byrds harmonies
  11:14am ?:

Thanks for the tickets, Joe! By the way, I volunteered at the last Marathon on your show so this is like good karma or something :-))))!
Avatar 11:15am Joe McG:

@?: Congrats! I'm sure if I saw you I would recognize you! Thanks for volunteering on the show last year!
  11:17am Dean:

Didn't the guy/gal who won the tix lead an old garage band out of Michigan?
Avatar 11:18am Joe McG:

@Dean: I didn't ask, but I think it's likely that she did. Didn't everyone?
  11:19am ?:

Hahah! Busted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am annie:

there's something so comforting in the sound of a neil young song, no matter how sad it is..
Avatar 11:22am pierre:

thanks for introducing me to the work of Shelley Short, she makes simple music that I love.
  11:22am melinda:

This is lovely
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

@pierre: I love her album, I want to play it every week and refrain.
Avatar 11:25am βrian:

I can confirm there are a hell of a lot of old garages in Michigan.
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

@Brian: It's amazing when you consider how fast all those garages appeared within a mere 100 years. Without the motor car, we never would have had garage rock.
Avatar 11:28am Brian in UK:

Joe, just bought the Chris Hillman CD as a birthday present for an old friend.
  11:28am Dean:

And thank gosh for that. Can you imagine a genre of carport bands? Porte-cochere bands?
Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

@Brian: It's pretty good, I think your friend will like it. A little too much revisiting of the glory days, maybe, but those days were certainly glorious.
  11:30am melinda:

I like the easy sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Carmichael:

Driveway bands, car park bands, just not the same thing. Hey Joe and music listeners.
Avatar 11:32am Brian in UK:

Chris Hillman wrote the first Country Rock songs. Discuss. We both saw Gram Parsons last gig with the Byrds in July '68 at the Royal Albert Hall.
  11:33am KP:

Country Fever? Sounds good!
Avatar 11:33am Joe McG:

@Brian: Wow, did you really?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am doctorjazz:

Ah, the Byrds with GP, that's a great one to have caught.
Avatar 11:35am βrian:

Whenever I read "car park," I imagine automobiles lounging on benches, walking dogs, and picnicking on the grass.
Avatar 11:37am northguineahills:

lol, βrian!
  11:37am KP:

As great a mandolin player Hillman is I figure he must be pretty adept at guitar. Yet I've seen him several times play one the whole night and never play one lead.
Avatar 11:37am Brian in UK:

Little did we realise at the time. It was a charity gig. Joe Cocker, before Little Help came out, Bonzoes, Peter Sarstead, The Move headlined.
Avatar 11:38am djsheilab:

I just adore this Ranny Sinclair release.
Avatar 11:38am Brian in UK:

@KP I still miss Clarence. He played on Younger Than Yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am doctorjazz:

I believe I saw The Byrds at a short lived Rock Palace in Boro Park, Brooklyn, on New Utreicht Avenue. Must have been late 60's, and didn't have a clue what personnel was at the time, just knew they had some hits. The Dead and Airplane played there, but it closed down in a few months. It was an odd place for a Rock Venue (I didn't get to the other shows).
Avatar 11:40am Joe McG:

@SheilaB: The best kind of compilation: A bunch of rare singles conveniently put in one spot to form a portrait of a neglected artist.
  11:43am johnk77:

michael been was a sideman in harry dean stanton's band. with the call michael fronted the band, played bass, and was the main songwriter.i do not think harry dean played live withe call, at least not very often. harry dean did play harmonica on a call recording. black rebel motorcycle club was great live, and michael was their front of house sound man. they did a fantastic show at irving plaza nyc, probably the early 2000's, and that was the last time i ever talked to michael.
  11:44am BriJet:

Good mornin!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 11:46am Brian in UK:

Great show, Joe. Thanks.
  11:47am melinda:

Johnk77 I saw HDS with Michael Been and some other band members in the late 80s(?), I think it was the Call but it may have been a different grouping.
Avatar 11:47am Brian in UK:

I was just heading for the door when......
Avatar 11:47am Joe McG:

@john: Interesting, I had no idea! @BriJet: Howdy! @UMichael: Get a copy, UM, I think you'll love it. @annie/Brian: Thanks so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am doctorjazz:

Beautiful, love this song GP and the Fallen Angels)
Thanks, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Parq:

Someone should really make a movie of the Parsons-Harris love story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am steveo:

beautiful version of this, aw gram, why'd you have to go so soon?
  11:48am Brendan:

I like this plaintive version.
Avatar 11:49am northguineahills:

so true steveo!

Emmylou was 26 when Parsons died. She turned 70 this year. Can you imagine living almost half a century after losing the love of your life?
Avatar 11:51am Brian in UK:

Just think instead of playing on WLIR-FM they could have been playing on this station.
Avatar 11:51am Joe McG:

@parq: I can't! Yoko has been doing it a long time, too.
Avatar 11:52am Joe McG:

I'm probably going to do some announcing after this song, so let me say goodbye now and thank you for commenting and listening. See you folks next week, and welcome to October. Hope it's a good one, even if it's off to a tragic beginning.
  11:53am paul:

thanks, joe
  11:53am KP:

High percentage of my favorites and acts I've seen today, Joe. Good work!
  11:54am Dean:

As it happens, I played Emmylou's Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town this weekend. "One Paper Kid" is one of my favorites. Realized I don't know the first thing about Walter Martin Cowart, who wrote it. Discogs tells me Tift Merritt, among others, did the tune, too, on her Two Dollar Pistols EP, which I have. Gotta hear that tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am steveo:

thanks joe! great show!
Swag For Life Member 11:55am tadpoles:

Holiday Monday next week Joe but I still will work and listen...and it's Sparks Week in NYC! Looking forward..Cheers.
