You're doing a great job, Joe! I don't care what they say.
Avatar 10:25am herb.nyc:

awww, so cute how joe says "oops". just last night, i was watching EXTRAS season2 and 1 actor just kept f'ing up; so many oops in a row that it frustrated ricky gervais. but when joe does it, it's cute.
  10:25am Brendan:

Vashti Bunyan had an axe. And a blue ox.
  10:27am jess:

I really like this new Deerhoof.
  10:28am John in Bklyn:

Hiya Joe! Did you get your Mats, Hüskers, et al fix from WRKC? That was my oasis of underground music!
  10:28am melinda:

Back then I didn't know how Husker Du was pronounced so it made me think of husky doo.
  10:29am John in Bklyn:

...in the vast radio wasteland of early-mid 80s NEPA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am BronwynB:

i wish college radio was still like that

i don't know why i care as i'm not in college anymore but still
  10:30am Jeff formerly from Rahway:

Yeah WRKC! My mom is a W-B native.
  10:30am Cheri Pi:

early-mid 80's college radio made me who I am today
Avatar 10:31am βrian:

WCBN was my entrée into the other side.
  10:32am John in Bklyn:

Me too, Joe! They really influenced my musical tastes.
Unfortunately, one of the DJs from that time, Sue Henry is now a right wing-ish morning yakker.
Avatar 10:32am Davee:

  10:33am Morgan:

Ah squeeze! I've missed this song.
Avatar 10:34am βrian:

If I remember correctly, Pat Robertson's empire once tried to get hold of WCBN's call letters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am coelacanth∅:

yes that very brief moment in history when squeeze was the opposite of what they became: very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am coelacanth∅:

(...just call me mr.sunshine)
  10:37am rw:

mr. sunshine, what do you mean? I like that song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Tim 07030:

Joe, is this Cat on a Wall from the Packet of 3 EP or a stand-alone 45?
Avatar 10:38am Joe McG:

Squeeze are a polarizing band, but I've been listening to them all weekend and so I brought all my Squeeze singles in! @Tim: It's the Packet of 3.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am coelacanth∅:

squeeze (uk squeeze) was excellent in the beginning! me too, rw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Tim 07030:

ok if you play Yap Yap Yap I'm going to fall out of my chair
Avatar 10:39am herb.nyc:

friends and i saw difford & tilbrook about 3 yrs back at the playstation theater, midtown. lovely show, then we lined up at the autograph table. difford teaches songwriting, and i think someone said for his class, he told his students "hey, paul mc lives down the street, let's go down and say hi". or something like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am annie:

well, joe, at lest you're getting it out of your system.. :-p
Avatar 10:39am Wild Neil:

PEACE all. Is it me or is Squeeze using the drummer from Adam and the Ants on Trust?
  10:39am melinda:

I like Squeeze.
Avatar 10:40am Roberto:

A big YAS to Squeeze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am coelacanth∅:

i love this song.
  10:41am ?:

This is quite lovely, thanks Joe!
  10:41am melinda:

@Neil I was thinking it sounded like Bow Wow Wow but you're right
  10:41am rw:

Oh, okay mr sunshine, I may be with you on that one. Definitely better in the beginning. I thought you were saying the opposite.

Digging the File so far Mr. McGasko!
Avatar 10:41am herb.nyc:

since @wild.neil mentions squeeze's drummer, on an old Best Show, tom scharpling mentioned gilson lavis to ted leo. ted said "who's that?".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Mike East:

I'm never not in the mood for Squeeze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am coelacanth∅:

"trust" was okay - for jumping on the bow wow wow/adam & the ant bandwagon.
Avatar 10:42am SheWolf:

I must admit that Up the Junction always makes me emo. Had to turn off the feed for a bit there.
  10:42am Morgan:

@wild Neil I know one of the ant drummers went to culture club
Avatar 10:42am herb.nyc:

oh, another autograph mention - when "east side story" came out, squeeze did a signing at j&r music world (r.i.p.), so i got my copy signed. then i saw them open for elvis costello & los attractions at the palladium. twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Hughie Considine:

Up the Junction has some of the most delightfully poor rhymes -- somehow it all works!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am BennettCap:

I wonder how this would sound as a country song.
  10:43am Morgan:

@herb.nyc sounds like a great show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am ChrisB.:

@herb: I too was at that show in NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am BennettCap:

Or this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am MattZ:

Difford and Tilbrook - the closest we will ever get to "the next Lennon-McCartney"
  10:44am ?:

I believe that the video for " Up the J" was filmed at Lennon's kitchen in his Tittenhurst Estate.
Avatar 10:44am Roberto:

Confession: when wife and I were expecting first child and we wanted to test out our new camcorder, I recorded myself dancing with my cats to this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am coelacanth∅:

wasn't the adding of tribal drumming to pop/punkrock a malcolm mclaren invention?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am The Oscar:

I always forget how great "Cool for Cats" is until I hear it again.
Avatar 10:45am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Hell of a time to jump in & see what you cats are up to.
Avatar 10:45am Itzall Ablurr:

In my yoot, I couldn't figure out why there would be a band called "UK Squeeze" when there was already a perfectly fine one called "Squeeze". And they sounded IDENTICAL!
Avatar 10:45am PsychopathJimFields:

I had to come to the message board to see if someone from Squeeze died.
Avatar 10:45am Cosmic:

cooooooooool for caaaaaats
Avatar 10:45am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Cool for Cats was my entry-point for them. WHFS down here used to play the hell out of it. One could do worse.

Neat back story on Elephant Girl.

("take me i'm yours" is one of my faves not played.)

Love the live Chuck Berry-esque version of "Goodbye Girl".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am BronwynB:

On Saturday I went to the annual NYC All-Day Sacred Harp Singing. There was a part where people were calling out names of the dead and then we sang a very lovely song blessing them. It was nice. Not Wm's usual type of music but he had such an all-encompassing appreciation for and knowledge of different types of music that I think he would have liked it. I hope so anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am fred:

I just want to celebrate Sheila's birthday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Brian in UK:

Packet of three. Cheeky boys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am coelacanth∅:

and the music for the american version was entirely different. -more a straight-ahead rocknroll song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am BronwynB:

In that comment I somehow neglected the entire point of the comment which is that I added Wm's name to the list of the dead we were blessing with our song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Mike East:

I've been trying to remember the name of "Some Fantastic Place" for years. So glad you played it. I first heard it in the Squeeze documentary, cited as their favorite song they had written, but I couldn't remember which song it was.

@djsheilab: Happy Birthday, Sheila... We hope you have a wonderful day and you hear from everyone who's important to you. It was on your 10th birthday that Hurricane Hugo destroyed St. Croix in the U.S.V.I. with 208 mph winds, at the time, the worst natural disaster ever to hit the U.S. So your birthday falls on a famous day in U.S. history, in case you didn't know.

whoa - just realized Bowie's "Where Are We Now" melody may have been lifted from that Billie Davis cut - wouldn't surprise me, and I say that with all due respect to DB, who historically did these kind of things in the most tasteful, 'homage' kinda way.

Listen, this is somebody's song. That somebody worked to make it a reality. Musicians practiced and worked for years to be able to get a working gig on this recording. Some engineer spent years learning their craft to be in the studio when this went ou to tape. It's not my cup of tea but i can dig it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Uncle Michael:

re toto / e.money's backup band question, npr's Sound Opinions (2 days ago) mentioned Sheryl Crow, and how she sang onstage w/ Michael Jackson.
