Saw them three times...in three different decades. I didn't see them in the '80s because no one did.

Your first concert, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:19pm Funky16Corners:

You saw the OGs. I am very jealous of that.

I think I saw Skunk with the Dan in '72 and then with the Doobies in '73.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

I didn't realize he made the jump that quickly
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:22pm Funky16Corners:

Though I read that it was Skunk who connected Michael McDonald with the Doobs via their shared time in SD
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:22pm Uncle Michael:

I'm pretty sure but not totally sure he was with the Doobies.

It's cool seeing him playing congas with Steely Dan on some of those early videos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:23pm Funky16Corners:

He shows up in a Linda Ronstadt performance on the Midnight Special playing congas
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:23pm Uncle Michael:

He wasn't a Doonie till '74...and that may have been the year I saw them. Though my mind wants to say '73. My mind is an unreliable source.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:24pm Uncle Michael:

That might be what I'm thinking of. With Ronstadt. See?

Seeing Becker's age at his passing is one of those occasions to start calculating, damn, how young those boys were when they were producing pretty sophisticated stuff in the early to mid-70s.

i agree with UM @10.37; and i never heard the comparison...but then, when "alone again, naturally" came out i thought it was Paul McCartney, so...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:42pm Parq:

Our kid went to Bard, so the Dan are definitely on Mrs. Parq's radar, even though (and here, she differs from Mrs. LG), she is not particularly enthusiastic about this kind of music. We were just sitting over a late supper, parsing "My Old School". Speaking strictly for myself, "Countdown to Ecstasy" is one of those desert island albums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

They're def one of those bands that I still find new things to dig 45 years on
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

C - I should mention that we are talking about the analysis of stoned NJ high school kids of the 70s, so their approach wasn't logical or well thought out
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:47pm Uncle Michael:

Barrytown is about a town near to Annandale...also about their Bard days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

i liked steely dan enough to have bought their first 4 albums new, as a teenager -through katy lied; and the next 3 used. gaucho i got for a buck and listened to once.
-i still put the first 4 on now & then though.
Avatar    Wed. 9/6/17 10:48pm geezerette:

This music sounded wistful and nostalgic even when new. Maybe because the product of a transitional era.

@10.46 haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

I know some bands that sound like Steely Dan, but I can't think of any bands that Steely Dan sound like
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:50pm Uncle Michael:

The band that featured Chevy Chase on drums. I kid. There are no recordings that I'm aware of.
Avatar Wed. 9/6/17 10:50pm still b/p:

I thought 10CC's I'm Not In Love was PM & Wings on first earing.

"Dr. Wu" is a must-sing when I put the disc in while driving.
Years ago I went to see an osteopath named Dr. Wu, and I tried to cut him a break by never commenting...until the last visit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:51pm Funky16Corners:

I would not have been able to resist
Avatar    Wed. 9/6/17 10:51pm Doug Schulkind:

I went through a phase when SD's cover of Duke Ellington's "East St. Louis Toodle-oo" was my favorite two and half minutes of life. It was so faithful to the original and yet so them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:51pm Funky16Corners:

Pretty cool idea for a cover too
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:53pm Funky16Corners:

UM @10:50 - I just picked up the Terry Boylan LP that they play on, he was a Bard classmate, too

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:56pm Parq:

Uncle M, I have spent a great deal of time driving in Barrytown while the kid was up there. There was a Roman Catholic monastery there, and blue-collar R.C. boys sent up for the summer would sneak out at night and party with the Bard cuties. It's owned by the Unification Church now. The ever-changing world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:57pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:58pm Uncle Michael:

Parq, I'm pretty sure the Moonies owned it then too, the references to "I see by what you carry that you come from Barrytown" are to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 10:58pm Uncle Michael:

Or they were there but didn't yet own the monestary.

A lot of brilliant bohos went to Bard. It's sort of like Oberlin in that regard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 11:00pm Parq:

UM, Wiki-P says the Moonies grabbed in in '75, so could be. I'll tell you this, the town is really easy on the eyes.

Doug, thanks for the Barney Wilen Auto Jazz files! Elegant!
That and Roscoe Mitchell's Bells For The South Side are absolutely Ellingtonian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 11:02pm Funky16Corners:

Doesn't (or didn't) Bard have a kind of freeform thing going on academically, or am I just thinking of the prep school?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 11:06pm Parq:

Larry, Bard isn't one of those "invent your own major" schools, if that's what you mean. It's actually quite rigorous. It's just that it's a liberal arts school -- that's Lib. Er. Al. Arts. Dammit. -- full tilt, and not one of these high-end vocational schools that most U.S. parents want their kids to attend. Famously, the Wachowski brothers split Bard when they didn't get into the film program. One of my kid's best friends did, too.
Avatar    Wed. 9/6/17 11:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 11:09pm Funky16Corners:

Oh wait, not high school, a separate college
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 11:10pm Parq:

Yep. My kid -- who now works for one of Bard's high-school-early-college projects -- did a panel at Simon's Rock last spring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 11:11pm Parq:

My wife's cousin is an alum
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 11:13pm Parq:

Larry, is there any chance that you're going to work in "Don't Take Me Alive"? In the midst of their flirting with jazz, that track was straight up rock & roll.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 9/6/17 11:13pm Funky16Corners:

That is not on tonight's set list, but I will surely play it in the future

there's no denying that was jazz fusion - as much as folks that were known only for jazz fusion...and this is as "smooth jazz" as "smooth jazz".
