Sorry about the absence of the pre-show big Gif cavalcade - it shall return next Wednesday.. got back to town super late last night and had emergencies this AM
@Ken, I'm not sure what you'd use this for (I personally can think of a million things to use it for), but I felt a need to share this gif with you and all my fellow Kenites: i.imgur.com...
JakeGould: Thank you for reminding me that I need to see that movie again. Makes me feel better every time. Maybe what's wrong with America is lack of time spent either bicycle riding or pretending to be European.
“Breaking Away” is a great film that is not just about bike racing but also the decay of American industry and a reflection on how class divisions work.

Ken,
I'm glad you found another song from Die Fabulosen TheKenschlampen. I googled like crazy last week but I couldn't find anything besides those two videos already found on Youtube.
"Dead Finks is not about Bryan Ferry. After all the music was recorded and the words written, Chris Thomas (my producer and Roxy’s as well) said, ‘you’ll get me shot for that track. It’s obviously about Bryan.’ So I listened back to it and it obviously was. It was certainly something I hadn’t realised. Essentially all these songs have no meaning that I invested in them. Meanings can be generated within their own frame-work. It may be a very esoteric thing to talk about but I don’t think it’s entirely out of the question.”

Is it me or this Brian Eno song has some stereo recording mistakes?
What a swell group of Garbaggio's at the garbacue yesterday! It was the highlight of my day, so much so, that I skipped the fireworks and went straight to bed!
Great moment in Breaking Away, perfect for inclusion in some Classic Cathartic Clips Collection: After the owner says, "And don't forget to punch to clock, Shorty." Moocher punches -- really punches -- the time clock at the car wash where he was about to have his first day on the job.
The Bowie animated image is reminiscent of some "Venture Brothers" episodes in which it appears that David Bowie is the literally shape-changing ruler of the League of Calamitous Intent, assisted/betrayed by his henchmen Klaus (who can generate ultrasonic blasts) and Iggy (who smokes a lot).
still b/p: Wish Jackie Earle Haley had not gone off rails. He was great as Moocher and as the tough kid in Bad News Bears. Guess being in two really good movies about being young is not such a bad life's work.
@listener142985 I read that Jackie Earle Haley had a second career as a record producer in San Antonio. He also did a good turn as a pedophile in a movie several years ago, I forget the name.

At least the band didn't name themselves 'Internet Explorer'.
Haley had a long quiet period for on-camera roles, but then got an Oscar nomination for Little Children and seems busy enough lately with horror/fantasy stuff and other film and TV work. I think he's doin' a'ight. But you're right -- he was perfect in those first young outings.
Ken, where are you finding these Deutsche pop gems??? who is your in??? I want answers!

Listener142985:
He was good in Little Children but I never felt like I needed to see that film again. Maybe if he had made a movie every year, the charm would have worn off. The time clock scene is a classic, along with so many other great moments in that film
@Adam-in-the-Green been into the NDW and German pop for a longish time now...it all started with Der Plan in 1980

I'm pretty sure this German song is about drugs (I did a German introductory course in 1998)..

@Ken and Listener creepfest, indeed, but very well done, I thought.
I've re-watched Breaking Away a few times and wondered if it would seem dated or lose anything, but the bike race at the end is still just as exciting as it was then. I also love the part during the bowling alley rumble when Cyril gets the ball stuck on his hand and swings it around in self-defense.
Melinda: I see it as an optimistic movie that is not dumb or formulaic. Not many like it that I have seen. Dave's parents are really good characters, nice counterpoint to the kids. Want to log off, go home and watch it now!
I missed some of the show. Was there a dingo report? Did the dingo go to the BBQ? Does she freak out over fireworks? (My dingo is all like honey badger and doesnt give a fuck)
The Garbecue was a really nice time yesterday. Meeting all those WFMU folk was like a family reunion. I'm very happy to have been part of the experience.
I can't remember which right-wing columnist claimed that "Breaking Away" was the best right-wing movie of his age, nor can I remember his argument, so my guess is it was kind of weak.
Hey y'all remember Rusty the Red Panda who escaped from the DC Zoo a few summers ago? He went out on the town for a month or so before getting caught again. I was hoping it was a Rusty type prowler who got into the duct work.
Hugh Jackman didn't know there was such a beast as a wolverine until he was already working on the movie. He thought he was supposed play it sort of regular wolfy.
