Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from April 29, 2003 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

DEERHOOF  Live in the WFMU Studios   Favoriting Engineered By Chris Stubbs  San Francisco's current crop of "out rock" is a bountiful one indeed, but Deerhoof may continue to reign as the supreme purveyors of strange sounds. Teetering between acoustic beauty and noisy chaos, their musical vocabulary is a feast of both freedom and tight composition. Never did a band hark Evol-era Sonic Youth, Thinking Fellers Union, and the Shaggs with such playful abandon and serious perfection, tying together loose bits with frantic blasts of the Who's swagger to boot. They return to Brian's show on the heels of a release of their best disc yet, "Apple O".
