Oh EFD, that uptempo break took me back to being on air in the 80s. Bless you sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm efd:

there's more where that came from, figgs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Barkevious Shabazz:

As a matter of fact, I Do wanna buy a bridge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Figgsrock:

I would expect nothing less sir!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Figgsrock:

Also, what is "Posetpunk?"

@Parq, Mayhem has gone the way of JM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm efd:

haha, it's me typing fast! Thanks, will correct!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Switchblade Batman:

Oh is it an 80s throwback show tonight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Barkevious Shabazz:

There's Manicured Noise in that pile somewhere.
  9:21pm andrewb:

'where's captain kirk?" by then spizz80 might be my favorite single ever. lost it of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Parq:

If I click-star every track I love tonight, I will double the size of my favorite list and wear out my clicking hand.

Playing some awesome tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm upsetter5001:

Are you only playing #1 hits like Michael Shelley?
  9:29pm JakeGould:

Covfefe, this playlist tonight. It is wonderful! It is a gift!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Mister Dobalina:

Wow, what an amazing track!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Kat in Chicago:

I forgot what an excellent cover this is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Barkevious Shabazz:

BEF on backup?
Avatar 9:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's nothing on Love&Rockets' version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm efd:

I maintain that without that Ball of Confusion cover you don't get to "What's Love Got To Do With It" and the rest of her big '80s comeback.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm efd:

yes BEF backing Tina
  9:40pm miles:

no 4" be 2" (whoever they r) on Rhapsody/Napster
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm efd:

4" be 2" had John Lydon's brother Jimmy in the band just btw
  9:41pm JakeGould:

@miles: That why you need to throw your money at WFMU on a regular basis; they keep the good stuff alive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Gaylord Fields:

efd, this is such a perfect re-reation of your New Afternoon Show days that I can almost picture Mykel Board working in the NYU bursar's office!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm efd:

HAHAHA, thank you Gaylord! That is high praise indeed!
Avatar 9:43pm Cheri Pi:

Evan this show gives me life!! I was raised by Seattle's KYYX (early 80's) featuring later Subpop people, and this is BETTER!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm fleep:

It also totally sounds like KROQ, The Rock of the 80s, in Los Angeles. Flashbacks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm medson:

efd, taking me back !!!! thanks
  9:47pm bob:

Was that the album version of We Got The Beat that still gets mainstream FM play? It sounded more organic-
  9:47pm JakeGould:

@bob: That was the original Stuff Records version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Mister Dobalina:

Suburban Lawns, Janitor!
█▬█ █ ▀█▀
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gaylord Fields:

I'd seen my share of shows at Loeb, but don't recall why I didn't attend that one. It wasn't because of a lack of interest, as I owned and loved the Stiff 45. Probably had to choose between the show and a veggie burger at Dojo.
  9:49pm herb.nyc:

Fun show! And Loeb has become Kimmel Student Center. A wnyu dj learned me of students saying Bob's Library and not Bobst. I used to "hang around" those 2 places despite not being a student.
  9:50pm melinda:

Hi efd and everyone! I'm spending the night in the Charlotte NC airport, nice to have FMU company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@Cheri Pi: <3 (a la mode)!
  9:52pm miles:

stiff version sounded cool. I saw the gogos in 81 at "Chicagofest" before they had a big hit w "beat"
  9:52pm Julie M Brooklyn:

Huh. How often is Mykel Board mentioned on this or any comment board?
9:52pm Michael from the Left Coast:

ah, the single version of Don't Look--stupidly I bought the album--the single is so much better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Gaylord Fields:

@herb.nyc: Loeb basement level was my favorite place to nap between my AM shift in the Macy's sock dept. and my late-afternoon classes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm medson:

screamer of the week ? : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm efd:

JULIE! I'm glad you're here, I've been saving something for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm efd:

this all pre-dates the screamers of the week, medson!
  9:55pm Julie M Brooklyn:

Ooh. OK efd, thanks. Loving the show so far.
  9:55pm xander bogaerts:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm medson:

great set !!
  9:56pm sugarwolf:

Ok, so it's not just me who noticed that version of We Got The Beat sounded different!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Gaylord Fields:

And the Escher-esque so-called suicide-proof tile on the Bobst floor was clearly an urban legend (as it didn't deter jumpers at all, sadly).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Someone needs to do a show comprised of great singles that were wrecked by record company meddling on subsequent versions, like We Got the Beat, X's White Girl and Uncertain Smile.
  10:04pm Julie M Brooklyn:

Oh boy. That hits the spot Evan.
  10:04pm JakeGould:

So as long as NYU is being discussed: What was that corner coffee counter that was on Greene Street and Washington Place? Hank’s? Or Henry’s?
  10:04pm JakeGould:

Back in the 1980s that is…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm efd:

get ready for the SCREEEEEAAAAAM!!
  10:06pm Julie M Brooklyn:

I'm ready. ZerOOOOOO!
Avatar 10:06pm Cheri Pi:

@fleep, they would broadcast certain KROQ shows on KYYX, I learned so much
  10:07pm Stevel:

Jesus. John Cale.
Avatar 10:07pm Cheri Pi:

  10:08pm Robert:

Hi EFD. Thank you for the memories. Used to listen to you on WNYU when I was in high school. Great to hear Polyrock, Blue Orchids et al again. I've a sudden urge to hear Six by the Neats. Did you happen to bring that along in your grab bag?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm efd:

thanks Robert, I'm sure you're looking forward to finishing college soon. :D
will try to get the Neats on for you.
  10:11pm Stevel:

Jesus. What a show I've been missing. In the day, I would have called much of this music "Punk". Then again, I lived in Denver. We were not up on the cutting edge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm efd:

much of this music WAS called punk at the time, Stevel!
  10:15pm krissy b:

This is the best show thnx
  10:17pm Stevel:

Always a surprise in the New Wave bin. I'd successfully buy albums based entirely on the cover. The Clash/Give 'me Enough Rope, Stranglers/Black and White, T Heads/More Songs..., Not so much 80s, I know, but so much originality was available, seemingly via one scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm efd:

one of my very most favorite keyboard solos coming up in this Celia & the Mutations song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Mister Dobalina:

  10:18pm Robert:

Thx EFD. If you can't dig up the Neats, I'd settle for Tribes by Soul. I think that was definitely a top 40 hit at the time. College?!!? That's a whole 'nother time with a whole bunch of other bands!
  10:20pm Stevel:

Yes. Best keyboard solo.

Who originated Mean to Me? This take is a bunch like the aforementioned Stranglers b
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm efd:

  10:20pm Robert:

Wow - you found the Neats. Thank you!
10:20pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Any Fall singles hanging around over there?
10:21pm Michael from the Left Coast:

and since (as I recall) you're not on the Wild Moose Party single, it wouldn't be self promotion to play the Cosmopolitans now would it?
  10:24pm Robert:

Human League should be followed by Peace of Mind by the Swinging Laurels ...
  10:28pm mike:

evan, play the flip of thr nervus rex single, I think it's called 'love affair'' I haven't heard it in decades and if I remember properly, it's great
  10:29pm herb.nyc:

When I pass Kimmel, I still see a guard who was there in 80s! I think Bob's Library has Fales Collection, and I think a Riot Grrl (KHanna?)left memorabilia there. Wonder what else they have. / Wednesday sked unchanged? Ugh, that means Andy Breckman on 7SD? I joke, I adopted him. He's a nice Jewish boy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm efd:

not a bad thought, Robert.
Michael - solid requests, but weirdly I never got around to picking up any Fall records. And I still feel a little funny about playing that Cosmopolitans single tbh, even though I don't play on it (and certainly don't stand to make any sort of gain from airing it in any case). It's not even in my 70s/80s boxes in fact, I should move it in there.
  10:30pm bob:

John cale produced a song called I'm afraid of the Russians. Do you have that? Also Johnny thunders produced justin trouble ponytsil which would also be great to hear. Do you know a sibgle called baby baby that had a picture label and no other info? A porky prime cut was in the matrix. Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm efd:

mike, your memory is correct but I'm not going to go back to it tonight. I've played it before though if you feel like searching the WFMU archives
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Parq:

Dombie doobie dumbie lips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

greetings efd and all
- hearing "mean to me" and "6" again was a treat...and excellent driving 55 through the pouring rain music.
10:36pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Absolute Beginners has lost none of its power and oomph over the years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Barkevious Shabazz:

I LOVE this 999 track! Thanks.

What no hawaiian pups????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm efd:

the what now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Parq:

The Jam had a kind of magnificence that was nearly literary. Not surprising that they quoted Shelley on the back of Sound Affects.
  10:42pm A.T.F.:

their mega hit punch and judy.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

bob, not "so afraid of the russians" by made for tv?

Avatar 10:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

was John Cale involved with that song? i never knew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

jeez this album blew my mind when i first heard it. i was like "no echo?no reverb?...WHAT A CONCEPT!"
  10:48pm Kate:

i was living in and attending highschool in scotland when gangsters was released. hard to overstate the impact it had.
11:06pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Much more echo on the 12 inch version of Too Nice to Talk To--I had forgotten that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm coelacanth∅:

everybody was alive. it hadn't turned to derivitive shortcut synthesizer shit yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Gaylord Fields:

A few years ago, The (English) Beat and the (Paul Collins) Beat — each of which ca. 1980 was forced to affix the respective qualifiers to their identical band names — played together under the tour name "Two Beats Hearting as One"! If only all contentious parties could settle their differences so amicably and to the benefit of all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

first heard this on wfmu c.1980. probably Irwin played it, but...? i recorded it but i didn't record the mic break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm efd:

@Gaylord I'm surprised they didn't get sued by Bono!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm coelacanth∅:

you mean Sonny Bono?! ("the beat goes on")
  11:13pm Carmichael:

Evan! Normally reserved for Todd, I say Pow Pow POW!!!
  11:13pm A.T.F.:

Pat dunkin had a good fmu show in the 80's...where is he now?
  11:16pm grace gold way:

haha yer fabulouse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

speaking of Pat Dunkin - i see you haven't played any "exploited"... (one of whose song titles i quoted the name of in a bar, resulting in me getting attacked physically)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Gaylord Fields:

@efd: You mean Cher U.K.!
  11:18pm Stevel:

dbs. Guessing your love for this record is not hindered by the drumming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm efd:

@Stevel in fact my love for that dB's record is FACILITATED by the drumming. Will Rigby is the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Gaylord Fields:

@A.T.F.: I couldn't tell you where Pat Duncan is right this second, but a couple of hours ago he was most likely at Citi Field.
Avatar 11:23pm Roberto:

Every time I hear this song I'm amazed at how little the sounds of the NYC subways have changed since 1979.
  11:24pm A.T.F.:

Just wanted to know if he was still into the music he used to play as most peoples music tastes mature...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@Stevel: It reads as if you don't agree with Will Rigby's drumming om "Black and White," an opinion that honestly leaves me nonplussed. I'm with efd: He's the best.
  11:26pm A.T.F.:

Was that the senders from nyc???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Gaylord Fields:

I ran into Pat D. a few times last year at the aforementioned ballpark. Rest assured he's still the godfather of punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm efd:

sure enough, A.T.F.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Switchblade Batman:

I was feeling that this party needed some Clash, nice one @EFD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm efd:

@Gaylord knowing Stevel I think he was doing that thing where you understate a point to make it more emphatic. I believe he's on board with Will Rigby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

weird to recall how dangerously radical this album was when it was released.
  11:29pm A.T.F.:

Went to high school with the senders....they where a ugly bunch....Glad pats still in the game....OI!...
  11:29pm ?:

Late to the surprise party tonight. I need cheering up so I'll be listening again on the archives. Some belated comments ...
@JakeGould: Congrats on the first covfefe reference of the night!
@EFD: Agreed on Tina Turner. There are some other lost gems on that BEF album/box set. Also, if you can play The Jam twice in a month, you can play Teardrop Explodes again!
@Fleep: Rodney on the ROQ ends his long reign this weekend.
@Stevel: We had a New Wave bin at my local suburban record shop. If I'd bought every album in it, I'd be cashed up now, i.e. many subsequent rarities.
@herb.nyc: I think the Richard Hell collection is at Fales too.
  11:29pm KP:

Hey, Evan!
  11:30pm Eddy in Australia:

Great stuff EFD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

it's not all that long ago that Pat stopped doing his show, and he was already old enough that it was clear his tastes wouldn't become closed-minded. (or "mature", as some might say)
Avatar 11:34pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

hey Eddy! Fair point re Teardrop, but not sure if I'll be able to squeeze them in at this point. Sorry you need some cheering up but hope this show/archive will help!

ODW was what 80s street comedian Albert Owens had in mind when he described this music as "a bunch of guys standing around playing video games."
