I think Cults would be a good multi-parter.

Hmm, awfully quite.

Hi guys!

Hi Heidi! Thanks for joining us! Haha I know how you feel...I have a hard time listening to myself, too!

I had fundamentalist parents. Ugh.

Hi Jim, Welcome!
  7:11pm JakeGould:

Really happy to hear the first cult experience be an ex-Christian cult member being glib about the Jewish aspect to many Christian cult (and non-cult) stuff nowadays. It’s dysfunctionally the main reason Jews are treated withs one level of odd respect in the Christian world nowadays: We are supposed to be the “guardians” of ancient temples that “hold the line” just long enough before Jesus swoops down and does things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm dale:

i should consider myslef lucky that we never had to go to church. when my mother was a child she was dragged to a baptist church 7 days a week by her stepmother so it was the last place she wanted to go.
Avatar 7:13pm TehBadDr:

This should be interesting.
Avatar 7:14pm kimzilla:

I was that kid that was never baptized. I would go to Sunday School and make faces at the kids in class through the window. I thought I was so rebellious. I do feel fortunate that I wasn't indoctrinated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm melinda:

A Jehovah's Witness nearly fell on my front porch today. Poor guy had arthritis and couldn't clear the top step.
Avatar 7:16pm TehBadDr:

I was raised areligious, attended preschool at a JCC, but that's about it.

So well said

YOU JEZEBEL! man, that sounds so prehistoric.
Avatar 7:19pm kimzilla:

'Whats a flirt daddy" that portion is the most horrific display of denying human nature.
  7:19pm JakeGould:

A man knows when an 8-year-old girl is a “natural” flirt. Wonderful!!! *vomit*
Avatar 7:19pm kimzilla:

Atta girl Heidi!
Avatar 7:20pm Heidi Hough:

haha thanks for the real-world feedback!

this is an incredible story

Avatar 7:33pm kimzilla and Emily:

Thanks, I want to thanks Heidi for a great story.
  7:34pm Danne D:

I have found myseld cult-resistant (not saying this to seem self-aggrandizing) but hearing Heidi talk about her issues and struggles I see sorta of an inverted version of my own issues and struggles.
Avatar 7:34pm TehBadDr:

Yeah, this is some great material again this week ladies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm common:

I still have residual fear, heidi
Avatar 7:36pm Heidi Hough:

thank you so much for sharing your story Heidi!
  7:37pm Emily:

Thanks, guys!! It helps when you have such fascinating people willing to talk to you.
  7:37pm Danne D:

Will do :) I think I found your twitter as well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm howard in nyc:

Hi Heidi, thank you for telling your story. I would love to hear a bit about some of the things you did to recover from the somatization/fibromyalgia type pain you suffered. To go from significant physical pain to pain free is impressive, and if you can post a little bit about it here on the board I'd love to read it.
Avatar 7:38pm Heidi Hough:

awesome! twitter.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm common:

The second an individual’s humanity is ignored you are in a dysfunctional situation regardless of context.

Avatar 7:39pm Heidi Hough:

howard, definitely. and I plan on writing a lot more about this and doing more podcasts so definitely share your email address with me at that site if you want to keep up. but somatic touch therapy changed my life, for one.
  7:40pm Danne D:

(i.e. my sense from my own self being too much of the opposite thing - i.e. being so individualistically driven that being a part of a group is an unnatural feeling). My props to the people who find a happy medium in life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This just gets more and more riveting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm howard in nyc:

Thanks, Heidi, I'll check out your online writing and pods, and add my email to your list. I've heard other people getting good benefits from somatic touch therapy.
  7:41pm Danne D:

glad you are finding yourself in a much better place Heidi!
  7:41pm JakeGould:

Yup. Happy to hear this and hope all gets better as time goes on.
  7:42pm caver_mike:

The cult that poses the greatest danger to everyone is "The Cult of the Omnipotent State". Not only in the US, but worldwide.
Avatar 7:42pm kimzilla:

@Danny D, I am surprised to hear that. You are such a natural at taking care of everyone, at least within WFMU. So, keep up the good work buddy.
Avatar 7:43pm Heidi Hough:

caver mike, i actually wrote an article for huff post comparing my cult leader to current US politics: www.huffingtonpost.com...
  7:44pm JakeGould:

“Get away from me with your brainwashing! Imma go back to drink my cold pressed juice instead of full meals for one full week because I care about myself.”
Avatar 7:44pm Heidi Hough:

no offense to anyone politically ;)
  7:44pm Danne D:

thanks Kim :) credit it to the great environment that WFMU is
Avatar 7:44pm Heidi Hough:

omg jake i completely agree!
  7:45pm Listener Robert:

Did Micah pick the bed music?
Avatar 7:45pm kimzilla:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -

Feathers in the Soul I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
Emily Dickinson
  7:45pm JakeGould:

Yup. There are hints of cult behavior everywhere… But as far as “crazes” go fidget spinners are cool and egalitarian…
  7:46pm steve:

  7:48pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

Kim and Emily....this is worth another show.. have people call in with thier sult experiences I was in a cult too, but nothing like what Hidi experienced .
  7:48pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm melinda:

Good points, Emily. I think there are quieter cults everywhere.
  7:51pm Danne D:

I remember one distinct time that felt like I was being recruited for a cult (I cannot say for sure that I was but it totally had that vibe).
My door bell rings and this just stunning girl is at the door - I mean just breathtaking. And she was sorta wearing a dark purple dress that had this newagey feel - thing like mage-y and she goes into this pitch her group or Bible study or what have you. But what I also noticed was the dude at the bottom of the stairs on the sidewalk with a shirt and tie (think conventional evangelist looking guy) and - not that these sorts of things appeal to me - the vibe was just all kinds of not right. But I could see where someone less willful (or alternately more trusting) than me would be swept up in a heartbeat and go with her to whereever they wanted me to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Cults! I gotta go back and listen to the archive…
  7:52pm JakeGould:

What Emily is saying is right on the money. If it isn’t sensationalized it seems like “What’s the big deal?” When the damage is the same.

It’s like someone I know who is a therapist said about Michael Jackson: The guy might have never sexually abused a child, but his breach of social boundaries creeped the kids out and that is bad enough most of the time. Respect of boundaries and respect of individuals is the key to non-dysfunction.
  7:52pm JakeGould:

@DanneD: Morons often use “hot chicks” as a recruitment tool… Maybe not in the larger cities, but elsewhere it happens.
  7:53pm JakeGould:

I meant to say MORMONS!!!
  7:54pm Danne D:

@Jake absolutely. the strong sense of set up was there. and the young lady did have something of a 'spaced out' - for lack of a better term air about her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm melinda:

I think I know the group you're talking about, and I have friends who have attended. They did not try to recruit me but they were defensive when I brought up the usual concerns.
Avatar 7:55pm Heidi Hough:

great points jake (mormons / morons haha) and emily and kim!
  7:55pm Danne D:

Oh don't kid yourself Jake - morons do it too
Avatar 7:56pm Heidi Hough:

i could not agree more, kim and emily. it takes realizing it, and it's so EASY ti be in denial.
  7:56pm Listener Robert:

I actually think we need more social boundary breaching.

Anyway, I can see how cults might develop out of a religion I'm involved in, because the people who do a lot of work as leaders want recognition and control as leaders. Hard to blame them. As a result, however, the circles become clannish and "political", in the sense that it's hard to be friendly to some without dissing others.
  7:56pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

Yes, this need more time ....do it again
  7:56pm Danne D:

There was a massive evangelical populace on campus where I went to college so I became adept at picking off dubious pitches. (i.e. pretty much any time a pretty girl would randomly strike up a random convo with me)
  7:57pm JakeGould:

“I actually think we need more social boundary breaching.” As long as you respect my right to tell you to eff off, I am okay with that attitude.
Avatar 7:57pm steve:

fantastic show guys... thanks for taking on the these important issues
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm melinda:

Great show, ladies!
  7:57pm Danne D:

Yup :) a part two or more would be good :) great show :)
Thanks Heidi! Thanks Kim! Thanks Emily! :)

The realization at an older age of wow this wasn't normal strikes a chord with me. And so many others I'm sure!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Ken From Hyde Park:

  7:58pm JakeGould:

That said, have you heard the good news?
