Hi Joe and people!
Isn't Roy Clark just a great player.
Wished there was more of this.
But I know just about the one early instrumental album, which is more easy listening like.

@JtotheK: Everything Sheila does is outstanding. :)
Avatar 9:42am Brian in UK:

Just getting 'Groovy' in the title is good enough for me.

This Filthy Friends is reminiscent of early 10000 Maniacs
 9:43am listener monica:

 10:01am JakeGould:

Is that Barbara Manning cover for the 7" the one that is blue and silkscreened?
Avatar 10:01am Joe McG:

@mary: Why do any other groups bother writing lyrics when the Mekons write the best ones?
Avatar 10:02am KP:

Well this is lively. Hi, Joe!
 10:03am mary:

i dunno
Avatar 10:04am Joe McG:

@Jake: The copy here is greenish-gray but it is letterpress printed, looks like!

@josh: Hard to play them on the radio, he cusses so much!
 10:12am mary:

totally in love w tom greenhalgh
 10:12am josh:

Ah yes, good point. IIRC the wonder album Aidan did with Bill Wells (Everything's Getting Older) is a bit lighter on the swears than some of the Arab Strap stuff...
 10:13am josh:

wonder album? i meant 'wonderful album', but i guess 'wonder album' works too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Summer and Michael:

When we heard that harmonium whir away directly after that great John Cooper Clarke track, we were sure you were making what Andy Kershaw used to call "the killer segue" into Ivor Cutler, not Arab Strap. Regardless, what an amazing set, Joe. Love! Good morning.
Avatar 10:15am Joe McG:

S&M: Ah, Ivor would've been a lovely idea! He did cross my mind, but then I forgot! :(
 10:15am P-90:

Hi Joe McG and Surface Dwellers. Just checking in to say: You're killin it As usual.

Many thanks, P-90! Always like that kind of interjection.
 10:17am mary:

beautiful show, all of it
Avatar 10:17am βrian:

I think Ivor will emerge as a trendy new baby name. Or it ought to.

I just got the Tindersticks collection of Claire Denis film scores, this is included minus the words. One of my favorites. From Nenette et Boni.
Avatar 10:25am Brian in UK:

Eyam pronounced 'I'm' is known as the plague village in Derbyshire. In 1665 a tailor in the village was sent some material from London it contained plague. When it was realised and many people died the village cut itself off and food was left on the edge of the village so people could still survive.
 10:25am Listener Alexandra:

oh wow...fantastic Tindersticks choice today, Joe!
Avatar 10:26am Joe McG:

@Brian: I knew I could count on you for the back story! Hope your house search is going well!

Avatar 10:27am Joe McG:

Thanks, Alex!
Avatar 10:28am Brian in UK:

Joe, we were up that way last week that is why I missed the show live. Surfs Down Ha ha.
Avatar 10:31am fred:

@Brian: that site is weirdly cheerful, turning plague into a tourist attraction takes some... hmm... confidence?

@Sem: How cool! Was he a nice hippy? I like his ascots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am annie:

wow, i'd love to know the backstory to that noel harrison song.
Avatar 10:45am MFOOZ:

I haven't heard that Lennon track for 30 years myself! Very timely. Decent little ditty for what was essentially a throw-away from Double Fantasy. Thanks for playing it twice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Bronwyn Bishop:

whatever this is I LOVE IT
 10:48am Dennis Diken:

that John L record was unfinished, no? the lyrics are not the final draft, I believe? diggin' the show Joe!
Avatar 10:48am Sem Chumbo:

Yeah, a good guy I hear. When his house nearly burned down, he thanked the Mount Hanley Volunteer Fire Department for saving it by writing a song about them and the fire.. Natch, it got heavy rotation on local AM radio.
Avatar 10:49am Joe McG:

Oh, look, here's Noel singing that song on TV: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Bronwyn Bishop:

someone should've persuaded the persuaders to use commas correctly
Avatar 10:50am Joe McG:

@Dennis: I love them, I think they're just as good as if he'd slaved over them. Hey everybody, come see Dennis play this Friday at Montgomery Hall!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Bronwyn Bishop:

unless they're saying "bad, bold and beautiful" to the girl, i guess
 10:51am Dean:

They just dropped the Oxford comma, right? Right, @Bronwyn, they're addressing the girl.
Avatar 10:51am Joe McG:

@Bronwyn and Dean: I'm glad we solved that mystery!

Avatar 10:56am Joe McG:

@Dean: Living the diamond life.
 10:57am JakeGould:

Just logging in for real to say that the lack of an Oxford comma on “Bad, Bold and Beautiful, Girl” genuinely disconcerts me. And I am the first one to ditch Oxford commas.
Avatar 10:58am Joe McG:

@JakeG: NEVER ditch an Oxford comma! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Bronwyn Bishop:

i love oxford commas bc when i was in 2nd grade, the famous author james mcbride, who was the father of one of my lil friends, came in to teach us writing and he told us to always use oxford commas. so i always do.
 10:59am JakeGould:

@JoeMcG: Sorry, it’s “Dewet, Cheatum & Howe” in my book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Parq:

I was commuting, so the last thing I heard was the Lennon 45. "Nobody told me there'd be days like these -- strange days indeed." I've been saying that for 35 years now.
 10:59am Dennis Diken:

thanks for the plug Joe! yeah, our Lovin' Spoonful trib show is a gas! this friday 5/12 at Monty Hall!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Parq:

And Joe, Sade *wishes* she could marry you.
 11:01am JakeGould:

When I was in second grade I wrote a book report on Roberto Clemente by simply copy the book flap copy verbatim from the book. I got a commendation card from the principal and praise from my teacher. I learned on that day that school is a lie.
 11:02am Dean:

I think Jake's on to something when it comes to ampersands. They effectively punctuate a series, combining both the comma and the conjunction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Bronwyn Bishop:

hahaha jake thats amazing
Avatar 11:02am βrian:

But you didn't marry your teacher, did you?
Avatar 11:04am βrian:

We're all &ed up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Bronwyn Bishop:

i believe it was the same year as the james mcbride when i did a book report on the 1st harry potter book, and my plot summary was primarily a list of all the foods at the great hall feast in one of the chapters. also, the year before, in 1st grade, i did a report on animal farm, which i read thinking it was a straightforward animal story. my teacher laughed her head off at me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Bronwyn Bishop:

wildwood flower! my dad always used to play this. he learned it from his dad, bc we are a bunch of west virginia hillbillies
 11:05am JakeGould:

@Brian: No I didn’t. A few years later—in 4th grade—I suddenly got tagged as a “troublesome” kid when a teacher asked me to run an errand to the teachers lounge and put her styrofoam cup back. I went in, had no idea how electric stoves work and just put the styrofoam cup on the electric stove. It caught on fire and I got blamed. Suddenly I became a “bad” student because I improperly placed a styrofoam cup on a stovetop. NYC Board of Education is garbage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Bronwyn Bishop:

aw thats terrible :(
Avatar 11:06am fred:

@βrian: if he did, he might have been a French president

 11:12am JakeGould:

@BronwynBishop: Nah! Don’t worry. Problems got solved by the time I was in 6th grade and my much older brother basically did my science fair project for me and I “won” the science fair… Man, did I look forward to going to 7th grade and JHS!
Avatar 11:15am Claw!:

 11:16am Listener Alexandra:

Can you play Eleanor Rigby covers straight through to Joe Belock? Please????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am annie:

i think the only original report i wrote was in 8th grade with a book review of "The Yearling"; all others were carefully clipped pieces from the books i had to read on the subject matter. many times i even added a mis-spelled word or wrongly worded sentence to throw the teacher off. i always wondered if they checked the bibliographies i compiled to see how much was copied.
Avatar 11:17am Claw!:

I'm with Alexandra on that request
 11:17am JakeGould:

Didn’t Joe—or someone else on WFMU—do an all Elanor Rigby show once?

My parents were both teachers, and Would never stand for plagiarism of any sort. However, my brother is two years older than I am, and on more than one occasion, I resubmitted his assignments to a couple of the "flightier" teachers we both had. They never noticed.
 11:31am djsheilab:

Hey Joe! Have been listening for the last hour. That Lee Hazelwood track was seriously great! And thank you for playing Honeybeat :)
Avatar 11:33am Joe McG:

@SheilaB: Looks like I'm not the only one! Heavy airplay here at WFMU! ;) Hope you're feeling better, dear Sheila!

PEACE all. I just read A Clockwork Orange three grades in a row (9, 10th and 11th" and wrote a report about it. Easy enough.

One of my favorite Zombies tracks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am annie:

a great book neil...did you incorporate any of the words in the glossary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am pantz:

This Zombies song is the theme to the newest Serial podcast. Def became an earworm after listening.

Thought we were back in STown territory for a sec

More creepiness if heard in context of Faulkner's story. Just sayin.
 11:38am Kimzilla:

I can't listen to A Rose for Emily without thinking about S Town. Such a good podcast.
 11:39am Will:

America runs on Duncan (Browne). At least in my house!
Avatar 11:39am Wild Neil:

@Annie: oh, that was a major feature of the report about Russian words (Russian subversion of British society) and how it was hip to be an up and coming Soviet tool of violence.
I TRIED to read more Burgess but he was just too strange and boring for me.
 11:42am melinda:

Always liked this part of Bookends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Parq:

Can you imagine us years from today, sharing a park bench quietly? How terribly strange to be 70.
 11:44am Anonymous Coward:

What buzzkill on a semi-decent day. As penance, you need to play dwarven thrashmetal to finish your st!!

@AC: Ha ha ha!
Avatar 11:45am djsheilab:

JOE THIS SET IS FANTASTIC!!!! So gentle + melancholy and perfect for spring. Thank you!
 11:45am Dean:

Burgess's Earthly Powers is not to be missed. Strange, yes, but not boring.
 11:47am zopa:

Ah Joe, Now you got me thinking of Harry Nilsson.
Avatar 11:47am Joe McG:

Thanks, Sheila! @zopa: Remind me of the Harry song I need to play!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am annie:

on feeling my age sooner than i iwish, it's very odd to think about how much creakier i can get at this point. and i see senior citizens over 75 or so still ambling on.. bless their hearts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Michael 98145:

( that is seeming younger all the time .. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am annie:

Parq, what's big and red and eats rocks?
 11:52am P-90:

I don't think that Burgesses' implication was that the teens thought it was hip to be tools of Soviet violence, rather that Russian (along with Cockney and Gipsy slang) was incorporated into their "Nadsat" dialect, because Russian had replaced French as the second language taught in the grade schools in England, an indication of a progressively Communism-friendly England.
But... in light of recent events, seeing as a sign of a direct, disrupting Russian influence is intriguing
Avatar 11:52am Joe McG:

zopa: I'm going with this one, which kills me. Thanks for the suggestion of Nilsson!

@ annie -- thinking of Ernestine Shepherd, and all those Yoga teachers who are well into their 90s *somehow* keeps me going & inspired -- even though "Rest in Peace" is just as *relatable* as it was when i would hear it on the old WNEW-FM decades ago!
