A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Trouble:

sad to read this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am tomasz.:

there's gotta be a simple solution to this bird thing. i reckon i could figure it out
Avatar 9:42am Itzall Ablurr:

The problem at Kingsland is a crisis of (lack of) imagination, and action. Sonic devices could be installed to emit CONSTANT predatory calls which would frighten away any bird approaching the area. This has been done to great results in cities experiencing the "pigeon problem". It absolutely deters them from going anywhere NEAR the origin point of the disturbing sounds.
  9:43am JakeGould:

Let’s reframe the conversation: It’s now me, it’s you! Jesus Chrysler!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Trouble and modern worldies.
@adrian - I believe I forgot to wish you happy anniversary last week. Please accept my congratulations herewith.
  9:44am JakeGould:

That now should have been a not but that is not my problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am tomasz.:

that's a good one, or i was thinking if you couldn't make the flare visible, you could erect a sparse metal scaffolding structure surrounding the flare tower which would prevent birds getting close enough to the flare to be injured
  9:46am SeanG:

hiya folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am tomasz.:

tom from Glasgow, bird scientist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Ken From Hyde Park:

A sign saying "Birds, keep away!" would not be effective, so that's right out.
Avatar 9:49am Chris from DC:

This Church of Anthrax is kind of soothing right now.
Avatar 9:49am quinn:

I'm with Chris
  9:50am JakeGould:

Maybe they should station old people throwing bread on the ground near the flare sites to get the birds to land before they get toasted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am melinda:

hi Sean!
  9:54am SeanG:

Hey melinda! been thinking of portland lately. :-)
Avatar 9:56am fm Mike:

Mm. If Idda known Little Dragon sounded like this, I woulda listened to them sooner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Trouble:

after mentioning how wrong a tax cut for the rich is, dude calls me and lectures me on economics. yeah i got an A in all my econ classes bizdude, i'm not misguided. just thinking my wealthy prez shouldn't give a gift to himself and his pals

Avatar 10:08am Chris from DC:

"Cut the chatter, spin the platter" is priceless.
  10:08am JakeGould:

How do you get a horse high?
  10:09am ?:

Great attitude Monica. I made my money the old fashioned way: I earned it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am melinda:

@Chris: totally. Trouble is such a great DJ.

I love it when Trouble carries on a bit.

I guess hotbox.
Avatar 10:09am Itzall Ablurr:

Worst advice ever (from a very, very wealthy by inheritance and business hand-over via family): "Just work as hard as I do and you can achieve the same level of success that I HAVE." Umm. OK.
  10:09am Jeff Frieri:

Keep up the chatter. Play some roots reggae and the first Clash lp. Best protest music.
Avatar 10:10am fm Mike:

Lol @ Itzall Ablurr
  10:10am blee:

Say it loud, Trouble! I enjoy hearing your views, they are a refreshing change from the new normal of fear, hate and greed.
  10:12am Mike Wolf:

Stay on that horse — it's not that high, it's only as high up as you need. A good example for us all.
  10:13am listener monica:

great name ?. i earned my money too but most wealthy people do not.
Avatar 10:13am bobdoesthings:

@jake make the horse blaze a trail? i dunno . i give up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Passaic River Blues:

@Trouble-n-Co.: that story is demoralizing. There are so many obstacles we create for birds on top of habitat loss and introducing environmental toxins. Every year I see dead warblers on sidewalks around town in the spring and fall. Last fall I tried to save a lady Northern Parula that had apparently struck an office building window on Raymond Blvd. but I failed. But, as Itzall suggested, this Kingsland methane problem may have a potential partial solution in auditory signals (hard to say if it would be effective for all species at all times, but seems like it would certainly mitigate to a great degree).

And don't even get me started on Trump's tax plan. Next time some NJ finance bro starts shouting about the virtues of Trump's tax plan, ask them what they think about the proposal to eliminate/reduce the state and local tax payment deductions, which will slam many NJ homeowners and serves no purpose other than to slightly offset the insanely huge cuts for the super-wealthy. Or ask them why when Reagan and Bush II applied these fallacious Laffer Curve principles it resulted in massive deficits and not magically increased revenue. They've tried this shit as long as I've been alive and it never fucking works.
Avatar 10:13am fm Mike:

Amen blee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Ken From Hyde Park:

I will also state for the record that I am not in agreement with their dumb idea to turn over national monument land to oil, logging and mining companies.
  10:16am Lucky:

Everything we own is, at least in part, gained through the suffering of others.
  10:17am JakeGould:

@bobdoesthings: That’s pretty good!
Avatar 10:17am Sem Chumbo:

Love a great torch singer, and torch song. Together, killer.
Thanks, Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Passaic River Blues:

@Lucky: word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am melinda:

I like all versions of To Love Somebody that I've heard so far, so good.
Avatar 10:18am PKNY:

Maaaaannnn, James Carr is slaying it! And I like that he gives the drummer a little something here and there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am sphere:

Anytime someone claims that they made it through "hard work," I strongly suspect that they really mean "exploiting others."
  10:22am sugarwolf:

The new tax plan looks soooo bad for the self-employed. Hmm, and so does the healthcare bills. I thought the GOP liked small businesses!!!
  10:22am steve:

if we follow the hosts logic then all of the wealth in existence today must have been confiscated from some one person in the past.
Avatar 10:23am βrian:

Can't recall who said it: "A self-made man tends to worship his creator."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Trouble:

the host said no such thing. I am only questioning the lack of moral fiber that suggests $$$ is the only goal and the sharing of $ is a bad goal. do onto others as you would have them do on to you is a pretty punk rock thing to do
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Ricky:

OWS had it right.
  10:29am JakeGould:

Kinda stuns me that taxes for the self-employed would get worse. Isn’t going freelance and bidding yourself down the trend nowadays? You would think making freelancing more attractive would be a thing. Just outsource everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am redkayak:

This is awesome - BTW.....
  10:31am JakeGould:

Which is to say subway ads is n NYC promoting “Fivver” and similar things really piss me off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am redkayak:

What? Small business taxes are going up? Remind me to vote for the other side....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am redkayak:

Oh......too late :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am maestroso:

This is a very soothing set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am redkayak:

Small business is not for the faint hearted.....
Avatar 10:34am Sem Chumbo:

  10:37am JakeGould:

@redkayak: Should have told that to Fred Sanford. He was on the edge of a heart attack every episode of that show while running his small junkyard business.
Avatar 10:38am Sem Chumbo:

haha, JakeGould.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am redkayak:

@Jake - I should have paid more attention to that show when I was a kid :) Hell, at least I can sleep through the night now. Most nights, anyway!
  10:40am ian:

what? why don't they just make freelancing totally illegal if they gonna make it worse than it already is. awesome set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am tiago:

I have to say: I think of myself as someone who knows brasilian music quite well - perhaps wrongly...- but am always looking forward to the gems you find Trouble. Had never heard this sydney miller track although can see the Milton Nascimento link. Obrigado
  10:41am JakeGould:

@redkayak: Lots of good small business advice on “Sanford and Son.” Also I was permalancing from around 2001 to 2011. It sucked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am redkayak:

Anyway, I LOVE it when politicians speak of the virtues of small business. Then they don't lift a GD finger to help. American as Apple Pie. Don't get me started.... I was in a good mood....
Avatar 10:42am braveness23:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am redkayak:

One huge, huge boon for small businesses would be a single-payer health system.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Trouble:

our working hard or hardly working congress and senate want to overall the affordable care act for americans EXCEPTING themselves : they will keep all the benefits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am melinda:

@Brian: yes! It would be good for everyone except the health insurance industry and healthcare profiteers.@Trouble: isn't that telling? I wonder if their supportive constituents know this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am redkayak:

@trouble - Oy. Yeah, we're not getting screwed badly enough as it is......
  10:47am sugarwolf:

@ßrian: INORITE???

@redkayak: it's like politicians who make a bit deal about family values and then support policies that make it much harder/worse for families
  10:48am JakeGould:

They also want to screw around with 401K plans. Make it taxable on deposit but not tax things when you touch the money in retirement.
  10:48am Kurt:

The federal government does so well with the VA health system I'm sure they'd do just fine for the rest of us.
  10:49am ian:

yeah you took the bait redkayak. that's the power of utter bs for ya. second to finance, total bs in some form is the realm of the powers that be. I also learned this the hard way by running a small business or few and currently freelance so.. hi comrade.

  10:50am ian:

the disconnect with the music is staggering. I'm gonna just listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am melinda:

@Kurt the government doesn't run healthcare in a single-payer system, they act as the sole insurance payer, which lowers costs in part because there is no profit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Planet Tyler:

Yup, Congress has exempted themselves from Trumpcare. Meanwhile, I'm so glad for the WFMU archives cos I missed too much of this great show today!
  10:54am Kurt:

Yeah, that'll work. Corrupt politicians running any aspect of the healthcare system (or anything else for that matter) is a bad idea.
Avatar 10:56am βrian:

No profit, no corruption. That's the beauty of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Planet Tyler:

@Kurt, there are some things that govt should run instead of the free-market. Now, we just have to elect competent and *interested* people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am maestroso:

Great show DJ Trouble. Off to a meeting, unfortunately. Will catch you next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Passaic River Blues:

@Kurt: And who continually sabotages the VA? Could it be the GOP who blocked the Veterans Job Corps Act in 2012, who voted against the Military Retirement Pay Restoration Act in 2014, and then again voted to reduce mental health and educational benefits this past October? It's almost as if the system was designed to function poorly.
Avatar 10:57am βrian:

The Republicants. Obstruct, Destroy, and Pillage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am melinda:

A single-payer system wouldn't solve all of the problems of healthcare by a long shot but it would move us in the right direction. Profiteering insurance companies are no better than corrupt politicians, and at least we have the means to fight corruption in govt and elect better representatives.
  10:58am Groucho:

Giles Peterson. BBC DJ. British prom. jiles
  10:59am Groucho:

  10:59am Kurt:

Governments by their very nature are corrupt and attract the self-serving. There are very few politicians in Washington who are there to do the peoples bidding. They are there for power and wealth and that's it. That is why our constitution specifically limits it's powers.
  11:00am SeanG:

kill em' all!
Avatar 11:03am braveness23:

Love this Nico track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am melinda:

As citizens we have more control over elected representatives than we do the CEOs of health insurance and other healthcare operations. Politicians are supposed to represent us and there is at least a system in place for allowing us to have some control over what they do, private-sector profiteers are not accountable to citizens, they answer to shareholders.
  11:11am Kurt:

Maybe we should handle putting people in Congress the same way we do jury duty. And disqualify anyone who actually wants to server. People who are attracted to power generally should never have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Troubled ones! Nice music today.
"The rich are just not rich enough" << basic idea in a song I'm writing.

Trouble, thank you ! I am packing to leave Atlanta. Finished teaching this semester at Georgia Tech. Flying back to Mexico City this afternoon. Your two suggestions Pasaquan pasaquan.columbusstate.edu and Atlanta Contemporary Art Center atlantacontemporary.org... have been highlights of my time in Atlanta. Thank you ! -Mark

Any fans of cool artistic women planning a trip to Rochester can visit the graves of Lee Morse and Louis Brooks. Cemeteries are across the street from each other. RIP to both.

In the 90s Brazilian Octopus album was the most sought after bootleg in Sao Paulo. I remember How excited I was when I finally got a copy. Finally somebody reissued it!

Fuck this Anthony Lane! Just fuck that shit, just totally sucker punch that guy. Okay he writes for the New Yorker, great: DON'T READ IT! he gives away the main plot line every single time, what a bitch-ass. That is NOT criticism. Sorry dude, you suck. Sure, go to the films as Trouble says , you needn't look further than her good word . Anthony lane sux. as a critic, he is a "SPOILER ALERT-a-Hole". Any questions?
