Radio! Radio! Radio!
  9:04am safe word:

I recently heard a variant of the introductory 'raaadio' clip on Paris' Radio Libertaire. What is its origin?

@safe word - Joe's weekly opening is from early Sesame Street, a US TV program for kids. youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am pantz:

Sweet! When does the laser light show begin, Joe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Passaic River Blues:

The Switched-On series proved that everything sounds better with MOOGS.

Hello to you Also Joe!
  9:11am safe word:

Haha, excellent. Thanks @Ken and @Mike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am The Oscar:

Every work week should begin with Moogsploitation.
  9:14am KP:

That high note was exactly same as ambulance going by. Stereo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Parq:

Heard this Hyman album when I was a high school sophomore. It's one of the main things that put me on a path leading to the WFMUniverse.
Avatar 9:16am Joe McG:

Moog morning, everyone! Welcome to the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey Joe and everyone. Back in college I interviewed Dick Hyman's daughter (Judy Hyman of the Horse Flies) for our school paper. It was such a cool, fun interview and she obviously learned a lot from her dad. But due to some miscommunications between me and the editors, the piece never made it into the paper. So I feel a pang of guilt every time I hear Dick Hyman, or the Horse Flies.
Avatar 9:18am V Priceless:

Good morning, Joe!
Avatar 9:19am PKNY:

Dick Hyman's cover of "Give it Up or Turnit a Loose" is pure genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Uncle Michael:

Good morning, Ned and the rest of you Sparkses.
Avatar 9:20am Joe McG:

@PKNY: It's always hard not to choose that track instantly when I have this LP with me.
  9:20am Andy:

Living in Dublin, Ireland, just discovered WFMU after seeing the documentary on Netflix last night, what a brilliant station!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Bronwyn Bishop:

welcome andy :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am The Oscar:

"Paperback Rider" may actually be a better title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am melinda:

hi andy!
Avatar 9:22am Joe McG:

Welcome, Andy! @Oscar: You may be right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Passaic River Blues:

@Parq: similar experience. I picked up Hyman's "Moog" reissue in high school, and it set the course.
@BB: you should unearth that interview your article and use it somehow, maybe for your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Bronwyn Bishop:

@passaic: i like that idea. i still have the recordings.
Avatar 9:24am northguineahills:

Now I need to dig up my old Switched On Bacharach album....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Bootsie:

What?? Hot Butter covered "Apache"?? Day: made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Bronwyn Bishop:

god i love the moog. one time in ithaca we had a MOOG FESTIVAL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. Just been playing the Beatles Red album, In My Life has to be one of the most amazing songs written by someone under twenty five.

Thought this was a 1965 tribute at first (best year for pop?)
Avatar 9:26am PKNY:

No version of "Apache" will ever top the Incredible Bongo Band, but I gotta admit I'm a sucker for any version of this song, especially Moog-y ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Bootsie:

I'm listening at work but until this track is over I will be useless. I am completely enthralled.
  9:27am Andy:

Hi all, listening on earphones in work, so great in this corporate, bland age that these stations exist.
Avatar 9:30am Joe McG:

Any of you with long memories know who used this as talkover music?
Avatar 9:31am Magda:

Good Morning People.
Avatar 9:31am PKNY:

A Moog version of "Poke Salad Annie"? Now I've heard everything!
Avatar 9:33am Magda:

I think there is a Moog Fest and Michael Stipe of REM is one of the honorees.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am doctorjazz:

Got me in the Moog-great set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am doctorjazz:

I miss The Radio Thrift Shop, was a fun show! She did WKCR before that, now she's a world travelling country music star. (I think she'll let you use the bed music for now, but you have to give it back).
Avatar 9:36am Magda:

Add an umlaut to pronounce it with the long oo.
Avatar 9:38am Jesse K:

Morning Joe! It's funny, growing up in AR I always heard it pronounced "polk salat" with a t rather than a d.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am annie:

"poke...... salat"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am melinda:

The Moogfest is in Durham NC
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Parq:

"Both Sides Now" from that Hyman album would make for good talkover music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am melinda:

I'd like to go someday. It seems to be a more general electronic music fest, not just Moogers.
Avatar 9:44am Magda:

Makes sense. It seems like a great time for mogers not moogers.
Avatar 9:46am Joe McG:

@JesseK: Ha ha! @melinda and Magda: I get that impresssion, too.
Avatar 9:49am Magda:

I would never think Michael Stipe as a Moog person.
Avatar 9:49am Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Joe and McGaskos. You know, THIS is a place I love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Brian in UK:

Did Bowie do 'I'm Not a Moogy Guy' on Lodger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am annie:

moog moved the fest due to issues with the city of asheville... sad, the factory is right here.. a damn beautiful structure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am The Oscar:

Is there a word for this era of country? When every song had funk-bass and wah-wah guitar?
Avatar 9:56am Joe McG:

@Oscar: Country Funk is what Light in the Attic called it a few years ago.
Avatar 9:56am Joe McG:

@Sem: Me, too! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Maggie B.:

Hello Joe! I know it's a little late, but for today you can call me Moogie
Avatar 10:02am Joe McG:

Hi, Maggie! Bill has arrived safely and so have his records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am The Oscar:

@Joe That works!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Maggie B.:

  10:17am melinda:

@annie cool that the moog factory is still there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am ChrisB.:

I saw a car in The parking lot at work recently that said WRNZEVON
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Brian in UK:

@Bronwyn But the options to see it are there. Not over here.

There was definitely bbq chicken and I don't remember what else.
  10:40am JakeGould:

Missed Bill’s food but respect his MTA heritage despite me having the worst commute I have ever had I 20+ years today.
  10:40am melinda:

@Bronwyn where do you appear in the movie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Maggie B.:

oh no! i know, the subway has been a mess lately. He's a bus dispatcher.
  10:43am mrmikestandsir:

I hope he's got Phillip and Lloyd and the Bluesbusters covering My Girl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Brian in UK:

1970s were peerless for reggae.

Was Taxi Sly & Robbie's label?
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@Brian: Yes, that was theirs. Ran for a few years, many good folks on it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Maggie B.:

hey Joe and Bill, I'm waving from across the Hudson (can literally see Montgomery St. from our windows.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Brian in UK:

Saw Sly & Robbie a couple of years ago, was surprised to see Sly walk on with a stick. Once he was behind the kit, the music took over. What a drummer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Bronwyn Bishop:

@melinda: i actually haven't seen the full movie, but in one of the trailers there is a scene of everyone eating lunch in the lunchroom, and I'm on the far left. basically the only reason I'm even visible is because i have a giant nose. its only my claim to fame so far...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Bronwyn Bishop:

i can't even find it now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Ken From Hyde Park:

I received an e-coupon on Google Play Movies and used it to watch the WFMU doc for the low, low price of just $1.99.
  10:50am melinda:

If I watch it again I'll look for you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Bronwyn Bishop:

haha thanks melinda! its pretty "blink and you'll miss it" but it was a proud moment seeing myself eating indian food alongside the greatest djs and volunteers of our time, in a major(ish) motion picture!
  10:54am Brendan:

Hey Joe. These tunes give me a laid back Sunday morning on FMU feel. Nothing wrong with that!
Avatar 10:55am Joe McG:

@Brendan: Definitely invading Jeff's turf here!
  10:56am John in Bklyn:

Great stuff, guys! Thanks for making a nice Monday AM.
I saw Black Uhuru in Philly in '84 (with King Sunny Ade!) and Sly and Robbie were in the band. I always loved Shine Eye Girl.
  10:56am melinda:

I'd be excited to appear in the film, too, even briefly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Brian in UK:

Hey Bill, you been looking after these beauties. No surface noise!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Bronwyn Bishop:

yeah, i definitely am feeling like it should be sunday morning right now!

side note, listening to reggae schoolroom when you live in crown heights is the BEST! i always go and get jamaican food from the place around the corner and then listen, and feel in tune with the rest of the neighborhood

@Jake - I don't envy you! Seems lately it's harder to get from one area of the city to the other by subway. My commute from upstate seems like a breeze by comparison.

  11:23am miles:

what's toasting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Switchblade Batman:

I was wondering too @Miles
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

"Toasting" is what they used to call the DJ interjections on Jamaican records. Jamaican rapping, I guess you'd say.
Swag For Life Member 11:26am tadpoles:

Jackie Edwards was a big influence on the young Stevie Winwood via Chris Blackwell. First 2 Spencer Davis Group hits were covers of Jackie Edward's songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Stevel:

You know, of course, you could play reggae all day and I'd never change the station. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Uncle Michael:

Let's hear it for Jim Weatherly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Passaic River Blues:

@Miles: it's when the DJ or just an MC speaks over the record, often to exhort the crowd. Sometimes its comic, sometimes to shout out a town, sometimes to boast of one's musical prowess, and also to critique/castigate one's enemies. The best do so in rhyme and growly yet melodic cadences. Some guys became straight up toasters, and recordings of their toasting became in demand. U-Roy was the master of this.
  11:37am JakeGould:

This stuff is so good! Thanks Joe and Bill.
Avatar 11:38am Joe McG:
