Reminded of Firesign Theater's marvelous gag about what it means to be free.

Oh, man -- remind me, Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm

What a great album cover. Hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm

Let me get it right...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm

The computer streaming this show is very very very very much on its last legs. I am hoping it makes it to the end of tonight's show, but if it looks like it's going to die, I'll let y'all know

Everything You Know Is Wrong, gag recounted here: http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?50148-Everything-you-know-is-wrong

We then manage to hear a very, very rare recording of "Uncle Tom" returning home after the Civil War. Someone tells him, "Uncle Tom, you're free!" To which he replies, "No I'm not. I's expensive."

Avatar 7:37pm

this one is realllly good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm

I keep discovering more and more of her stuff -- she was remarkably prolific for someone who passed away at age 30
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm

This is still my favorite track by here, though -- it just sounds like everything is falling apart
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm

Avatar 7:42pm

the production here is kind of crazy!
Avatar 7:45pm

Songs are wonderful...but then I glanced at her bio and now it all has a sad stripe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm

Very sad, yes ... but she is super revered, in both Thailand and Laos. When I bought a bunch of her CDs in Fort Worth, my GF's mom had a *lot* to say about her
Avatar 7:57pm
still b/p:

It's touching to see her receiving heaps of garlands from concert fans. Funny thing is, though, if I watched an American pop star getting such reverence and adulation, I'd reflexively be all head-shakes and sighing eye-rolls.
Avatar 7:58pm

h'lo h'lo
missed today till right now (doctor's appt, because every once in a while Social Security wants to know if i'm suddenly healthy, and my doctor has to firmly say No)
Avatar 8:00pm

@sill b/p, I think the first reaction is the right one (personally).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm

Avatar 8:02pm

hey Gary! congrats on a great marathon! relaxed non marathon shows are now extra sweet.
Avatar 8:02pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm

This has a nice cinematic quality.
Avatar 8:05pm

hm. reading my message, it could be misunderstood. what i mean is, mostly i respect any person's adulation, and expect people to respect mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm

True, Melinda! Hey, Steve!
Avatar 8:06pm

ok, this is weird. which is good, of course

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm

I think from this blog: blogs.voanews.com...
Avatar 8:16pm

this is fantastic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm

Here's what they wrote about the recording:

"First up is Nora accompanied by her husband Jheich ould Chighaly. This is a recording I made in their living room after midnight on March 28, 2003 as a sandstorm punished Nouakchott. This is a song that they perform frequently at weddings. This recording gives you a great idea of Jheich’s slippery guitar playing and Nora’s warm voice (the heat of the sandstorm was making her voice crack). Look closely at Jheich’s guitar in the picture above…check out his customized microtonal fretboard."
Avatar 8:18pm
tim abdellah:

Oh nice! It's Matthew Lavoie's recording, natch. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up his comp "Wallahi le zein"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm

I would love to know something about the song itself -- when it was written, by whom, etc.
Avatar 8:44pm

yeah, this is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm

I should make a habit of playing more of these long live tracks on the show -- I shy away from them because they're so long, but ... they really are terrific, and not really heard much on American airwaves

In a Christopher Durang play, a character goes on a long tear about old days and old days ' better TV, but it's not all rose-colored screen. Of Senor Wences' on Ed Sullivan, he says, "His act lasted about....seven hours."

These three hours were just great!
