Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar 10:01pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Danny and all the little pilot lights
Avatar 10:01pm Little Danny:

Hi Coel! So we begin with a direct challenge to Doug Schulkind, who rather confidently proclaimed Al Green's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" the best of all Hank covers
Avatar 10:01pm geezerette:

Howdy !
Avatar 10:02pm Little Danny:

Stunner of a show, Evan - I had you on in the background as I worked through some 45s and LPs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Loves Hankness. Nice font & stuff here too.
Avatar 10:02pm Little Danny:

Geez! Hello!
Avatar 10:03pm Little Danny:

Thanks and thanks and hi RRN63!
Avatar 10:03pm coelacanth∅:

this is beautiful. touché!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Doug Schulkind:

OK, that was the 3rd greatest Hank Williams cover, ever. Or 33rd?
Avatar 10:05pm coelacanth∅:

is there a special font here that i don't get?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm melinda:

hi again folks!
Avatar 10:06pm Little Danny:

Haha, hi Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That was on the cusp of affectation & soul.
Avatar 10:07pm Little Danny:

Hi Melinda! Our avatar puzzle pieces line up yet again
Avatar 10:10pm Little Danny:

Starting the show with not a bang but a dirge, several
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@coel: Do your question marks look like reverse S's (once posted) - ? ?
Avatar 10:20pm northguineahills:

@coel: Says the guy that gets to use to super cool Ø
Avatar 10:21pm geezerette:

Doug's Room!!!
Avatar 10:28pm Little Danny:

Lotsa GtDR meta references in this first set: "Doug's Room," "Blue Flame" and a direct challenge to a Schulkind assertion during Evan's show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The 45 - such the perfect Pop artifact. Lotsa curatin' & spinnin' for the DJ tho'!
Avatar 10:33pm northguineahills:

Wait, is Alfredito Linares Bolivian? Tiahuanaco a pre-Columbian site near Lake Titicaca. Also known as Gateway to the Sun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Scraps:

h'lo h'lo
Avatar 10:38pm northguineahills:

Emeralds, not to be confused w/ the post-Animal Collective gauzey electronic band of the 21st century.
Avatar 10:44pm Little Danny:

Scraps and NGH! Welcome!
Avatar 10:45pm Little Danny:

Thanks for the understanding, RRN63 - my absence in the comments is due to the scramble
Avatar 10:46pm Little Danny:

So what sort of sound are you fine folks hungering for? I would love to chase down a specific mood through music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Doug Schulkind:

When you scramble your show, Little Danny, do you use a whisk. Or do you just use a fork?
Avatar 10:51pm Little Danny:

@Doug It's all with my hands, actually, but I do slide around the floor in tap shoes for maximum sound and theatricality
Avatar 10:52pm Little Danny:

I don't know what that means either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Call themselves 'Ho-Dads' & do a Jazz standard.
Avatar 10:53pm coelacanth∅:

and the result is the sonic equivalent of a spin-painting.
Avatar 10:53pm Little Danny:

Has there ever been a bad version of "Song for My Father"?
  10:56pm MrFab:

@RR: maybe by "Ho Dad" they meant 'pimp.'
Avatar 10:56pm Little Danny:

Ha, coel, it does really feel like that!
Avatar 10:57pm Little Danny:

Missssterrr FAB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's like the Jazz equivalent of regional No-Hit wonder Garage singles & their 'production values'. There was this photo of Matt FiveAsh in some 45 library - just a wall of 'em - most extraordinary but particular look on his face of mixed awe & being overwhelmed : you'd never ever ever play them all...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Little Danny + jazz hands = Major Entertainment!
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

That is exactly it, RRNov63. The flip of the "Song for my Father" I played is actually totally garage-y
Avatar 11:00pm Little Danny:

These jazz hands are just a blur right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...said that a lot of Rawkabilly tracks - you had older Jazzbos playing & some punk upstart delinquent singing - all trying to jump Elvis' market or something...
Avatar 11:02pm coelacanth∅:

Danny it sounds like it - spin painting... but not one of those cheap ones like what i got for christmas one year (not that i wasn't extremely Thankful for it and loved it anyway) but like the ones at the county fair that spin really fast and the paper's very smooth and the colors all blend really beautifully...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nice trio. Musicians really - together.
Avatar 11:07pm Little Danny:

Beautiful, thank you coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Giant Steps is science.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Trane is simply my favorite.
Avatar 11:08pm northguineahills:

I have spirograph jazz hands!
Avatar 11:09pm Little Danny:

There is something spirographic about Coltrane on "Giant Steps"
Avatar 11:11pm geezerette:

So strong & joyful. :D
  11:11pm Doctorjazz:

Hi all, nice to hear some Trane.
Avatar 11:12pm geezerette:

Open, free, best of the American self-image.
Avatar 11:12pm Little Danny:

Le Doctor Jazz! Nice to see you
Avatar 11:13pm Little Danny:

YES geez! Hopeful, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Scraps:

I know it's a cliché, but Giant Steps is my favorite Coltrane
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Why not Scraps. He's a Composer as much as anything.
Avatar 11:18pm geezerette:

Hey Scraps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...in fact it's noted you kind of have to slow it down to hear how crafted each phrase is. Where to go from there? One of the Giants, indeed, whose steps are fascinating to chart...
Avatar 11:26pm Little Danny:

Gotta buncha shorter songs this set, might be off the comments for a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Man - I love the real stuff.
  11:27pm Doctorjazz:

This is great... sort of Early Staples but less professional (not in a bad way, and the Staples were pretty raw themselves )
Avatar 11:28pm geezerette:

Blues is jazz's daddy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

These Blues w/ a good portion of Folk in them maybe?
  11:30pm Doctorjazz:

making me smile :)
Avatar 11:32pm geezerette:

me too!
Avatar 11:32pm Little Danny:

I'm glad Doctorjazz! This next one may make you cringe, howevs
Avatar 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

aw i missed giant steps while i was tucking the dogs in...and something i've never heard of. (mouse bonati?)
- well somebody has to spoil those dogs.
  11:32pm Doctorjazz:

That's what they call claw hands banjo, no?
  11:34pm Doctorjazz:

no cringing, though I can set why you'd think I might. Charming, actually.
  11:34pm MrFab:

The Shagg's father?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Another world that's yet our own.
Avatar 11:35pm Little Danny:

Now back to the sublime
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Many Miles Davis?
  11:36pm Doctorjazz:

loves that country harmony.
Avatar 11:36pm geezerette:

coel,do your dogs sing? It's so great when they do that. :)
Avatar 11:37pm Little Danny:

@DrJazz: totally charming, weird, perplexing. Another manifestation of the American spirit
Avatar 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

i'm way down with this set.
...this so reminds me of George.
Avatar 11:39pm Little Danny:

@coel: animal-related reasons for missing part of the show are not only welcome but encouraged
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Lost your connection, Dan. The stream has kicked in.
Avatar 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

Danny it's the stream coming through - not your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- & a bit like 'Wild Horses' - I bet you're thinking too...
Yup - 20s type Swing.
Avatar 11:42pm geezerette:

here too. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Doug Schulkind:

Now playing is Newton & His Uptown Serenaders.
Avatar 11:45pm coelacanth∅:

g, they don't sing, by most folks' standards; but the little one (Prana) has an exceptional vocabulary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Dan, you lost the connection about halfway through Bob Desper.
Avatar 11:47pm northguineahills:

Thanks LD, gotta jump, love the gospel country!
Avatar 11:47pm coelacanth∅:

well, there's still good music at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Anddddd, you're back!
Avatar 11:48pm geezerette:

coel, we had a very chatty cat. It's great having conversations with pets;so sweet and funny.
Avatar 11:48pm Little Danny:

I'm back! Sorry 'bout that!
  11:49pm MrFab:

He's back! But Danny play the Vaqueros again, we missed it.
  11:50pm holland oats:

Great set!!!!
Avatar 11:52pm geezerette:

Loved the show Danny!
Avatar 11:53pm coelacanth∅:

i love chatty cats! sometimes i wish (like many people) to know what they're saying in their minds...but then, it's probably better the way it is. it's easier to unconditionally Love a cute, funny and presumably innocent creature!
Avatar 11:55pm geezerette:

Agree. I love cats but it's a good thing we're so much bigger than they are.
Avatar 11:56pm coelacanth∅:

ha -yeah!
Avatar 12:00am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Little D! have a good week.
'night, comrades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am Doug Schulkind:

Actually, Bill Mac and Zzzzzzzero Hour will be filling in for Uncle Michael.
Avatar 12:03am Little Danny:

d'oh, thanks Doug! And apologies to Uncle M and Bill Mac for my jazzhands-related confusion
Avatar 12:04am Little Danny:

Oh our dog sings! Our cat less so, but he's otherwise plenty chatty.
Avatar 12:05am Little Danny:

Thank you everybody! Love y'all!
Avatar 12:06am geezerette:

Haha, next time I'll ask who his favorite players are.
Happy weekend Danny!
Avatar 12:06am coelacanth∅:

i made a collage of 2 dogs vocalizing. (the more vocal one is no longer among us.) i did manipulate it a little, but still it demonstrates some lovely talent!
Avatar 12:06am Little Danny:

And, Doug, more than anyone I appreciate you stickin' around. I know you've got some morning business to attend to.
Avatar 12:07am Little Danny:

Thank you geez, you too!
Avatar 12:11am coelacanth∅:

-good to the last drop.
  9:18pm mrmucho:
