Options February 8, 2017: The Best Guitar Solo of All Time

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

On today's show, Andy has a case of the yawns, and Ken has the stomach flu. But that can't stop them as they power through, holding a contest to determine the best guitar solo of all time! The winner of the contest gets a $20 gift certificate to Burger King. The list of nominees are:

The Allman Brothers - Blue Sky
Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Bill Haley - Rock Around the Clock
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Elvis Presley - Hound Dog
Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation
Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Strange Things Are Happening

During the show, people vote online for their favorite solo. In addition, many more suggestions are made by callers, several of whom sing along to their favorite solos.

Also, Andy serves up a classic zinger-pun. Multiple callers confess to have dreams about Andy, leading to the creation of the "Dreaming About Andy Hotline". And Death Talk: Which is more scary? Is it the nothingness or the pain of dying?

The show ends with a very odd demonstration of Andy's inability to identify a single note as a single note.

Yule's closing solo in Oh Sweet Nuthin' is a great one too
Avatar 6:05pm Undead83:

Maggot Brain is as great as Frank Zappa's Watermelon in Easter Hay xD
  6:05pm timotato:

Has to be Frank Zappa "Montana"
Avatar 6:06pm Chris M.:

of these choices it's Cinnamon Girl hands down.

  6:06pm Dean:

Pilot's "Magic"? What an inspired suggestion! Something to that, indeed. And of course "Maggot Brain," too.

Speaking of the Allmans, there's Duane's solo on Boz Scaggs' "Loan Me a Dime."
  6:07pm Dean:

Alvin Lee's "Goin' Home" at Woodstock. I'll stop.
  6:07pm bill:

If we're talking Zappa, what about Muffin Man or Sleep Dirt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm coelacanth∅:

none of those are among the top 20 best git solos. (though some are Great)
  6:08pm timotato:

Of those posted on your list, the ONLY one that has any chance is Blue Sky but even that is so-so compared to others on the comments list.
Avatar 6:08pm Linda Lee:

what's your top 8, coelacanth?
  6:09pm Jim:

What about Robbie Krieger's solo on Moonlight Drive by The Doors?
Avatar 6:10pm cosmic matrix:

Eddie Van Halen on Beat It
  6:12pm KM:

Only the first half of the Blue Sky solo was Duane, then it switches to Dickey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm coelacanth∅:

i dunno, Linda... there're probably 8 Hendrix solos i'd rate higher; 8 Duane; 8 Peter Green; 8 Neil Young; 8 Chuck Berry.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm dale:

one note is all ANYONE needs.
  6:12pm Will:

There were plenty of Jazz, Blues, and Classical guitar solos before Bill Haley
  6:12pm flashbazbo:

The guitarist who played that solo in rock around the clock died before the record was even released! I didn't vote for it, but keep an open mind.
  6:13pm east hollywood:

Does anyone else find it really irritating that "sultans of swing" isn't in swing time?
Avatar 6:13pm Linda Lee:

true, where's Jimi?
Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Walt:

Sister Rosetta Tharpe! Check out her killer solo on "Down by the Riverside" (starts at about 1:30):

Sorry, can't resist one more. Steve Howe, "Starship Trooper" live on Yessongs.

my favorite is still ira's solo in yo la tengo's cover of "little honda".
Avatar 6:14pm Fredericks:

Keith Richards on "Sympathy for the Devil."
  6:14pm mike:

I would have to go with Richard Thompson's solo on a live version of "Can't Win" from the "Watching The Dark" anthology. Total delerium.
Avatar 6:15pm Linda Lee:

is that Keith on 'Sympathy'? i
  6:15pm timotato:

Starship Trooper played by Steve Howe is great. The last 1 minute of "Ritual" off Tales From Topographic Oceans is one of the great guitar endings of all time!

Avatar 6:21pm Linda Lee:

will someone call & nominate Maggot Brain please?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm dale:

how about thumbs carlisle's version of caravan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm coelacanth∅:

it must've been Keith on sympathy...but it was Taylor on some of the best sticky fingers songs. (and honky tonk woman?)
  6:21pm MrFab:

Remember that all-one-note solo mix I posted on my blog, ken? https://bridgetownrecords.bandcamp.com/album/one-note-mixtape
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm dale:

is there a guitar solo on 'when the swelling goes down?'
  6:21pm Dean:

Honest to god, half of Blind Marky Felchtone's solos for Zeke are worthy.
Avatar 6:22pm Linda Lee:

i was confused about Sympathy because Keith is generally rhythm, yes?
Avatar 6:22pm Undead83:

Maggot Brain deserves it indeed

My favorite minimalist solo is on "Don't Worry Baby" by The Beach Boys. Just strummed I-ii-Vsus chords played twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm coelacanth∅:

i think there may be even better Berry solos.
  6:23pm bill:

Someone should mention Charlie Christian and Les Paul. So I am.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm dgg:

man fuck that. Hospice should be giving out speedballs starting at age 18. That's how I'd run the country.
Avatar 6:30pm Undead83:

But I still think that there should be one Zappa there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm coelacanth∅:

then there's Curt Cobain's solo in their cover of d-7...fucking Stellar!
Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Walt:

@dgg I'd vote for you

Robert Frip on Brian Eno's Baby's on Fire - starts at 1:25
  6:31pm Hypertoast:

Meat Puppets "Backwater".
Avatar 6:31pm cosmic matrix:

btw brian eno interview on tape op podcast! i just discovered it
  6:31pm mike:

@Undead83 That's a good choice as well. But I like Can't Win because of the way he just builds and builds until it just goes insane.

There are a few other Thompson solos that could be considered, such as 'The Way That It Shows" or "Tear Stained Letter".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm coelacanth∅:

- or Fripp's solo on i'll come running, or at least 10 king crimson songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm dgg:

thanks Walt. You can be the vice president if you want.
  6:32pm Hypertoast:

Yeah, I'll come running is pretty great
  6:33pm FoFo (:

Ken,

The Television song you often play has the best guitar solo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm coelacanth∅:

anyway i still love the solo in back in the ussr. -one note. perfect.
Avatar 6:33pm steve:

great Even joke
  6:33pm billybumpus:

I dreamed about Andy last night, he was in a star freighter having zero gravity waterballoon fight with a grizzly bear.
Avatar 6:33pm Undead83:

@mike good point :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Asheville Jon:

is the Andy Breckman dirty joke video still on youtube?
  6:33pm Listener Robert:

I'd hate to see her colon.
Avatar 6:34pm steve:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm dgg:

@Listener Robert haah nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm coelacanth∅:

(but "marque moon" has no solo)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm coelacanth∅:

he was not.
Avatar 6:36pm Chris M.:

he played bass wtf is going on with you people
Avatar 6:36pm Undead83:

xD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm dgg:

oh yeah thin lizzy can't go wrong. What're the top greatest ZZ Top solos?
  6:37pm Keith from Oregon:

"Marquee Moon" definitely DOES have a guitar solo!
Avatar 6:38pm Undead83:

For ZZ Top the one that comes to my mind now as worth mentioning is Pearl Necklace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm coelacanth∅:

nuh-uh. 2 guitarists playing lead together does not a solo make. it's a duet.
Avatar 6:39pm Linda Lee:

by definition 2 is not a solo! :-D
Avatar 6:40pm Undead83:

@ coelacantho good point ^^
Avatar 6:40pm Linda Lee:

famous guitarists don't need milkshakes! the milkshakes have to go to the winning voters!
  6:40pm mary:

you can give the prize for Robert Quine to Mr. Hell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm dale:

this is great - i know neil likes burger king.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm dale:

he gets the senior coffee though, no milkshakes - lactose intolerant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm coelacanth∅:

hmm... blue sky is also not technically a solo.
  6:42pm Liam:

What's the dreaming of andy hotline number again?
Avatar 6:42pm Linda Lee:

i thought neil was an environmentalist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm PMD:

Neil does not deserve it because he left his wife for the mermaid.

  6:44pm FoFo (:

Give that Benita a milkshake!
Avatar 6:45pm Linda Lee:

love the guitar karaoke!
  6:46pm moontana:

if you listen to Ken's show from the morning at the same time as the Ken & Andy show in the afternoon, it's not so bad. found myself doing this the past couple of weeks.
  6:47pm FoFo (:

Exactly, Lisa! If there are air guitar solos, why not guitar karaoke ones?
Avatar 6:47pm Linda Lee:

that was 5 of the same note.
Avatar 6:48pm Linda Lee:

Andy's talkin out his rear end on this.
Avatar 6:48pm Marcel M:

Oh man this is great
Avatar 6:49pm Fredericks:

Hate to agree with Andy, but when you bend a string it becomes a different note. Sorry Ken.
Avatar 6:49pm Chris M.:

even though i know he's trolling half the time i can never get over how Andy doesn't know anything about music whatsoever
  6:49pm B:

Whats the number again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm dgg:

Ramblin' Rose is great
Avatar 6:49pm Linda Lee:

the pitch doesn't change though!
  6:50pm jonklin:

what were notes?
Avatar 6:50pm Marcel M:

I mean technically if the string is bent its not the same note. A note is a pitch. Am I half drunk, or am I right? Or Both?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, no string bending going on there.
  6:51pm kate:

list needs to be updated
Avatar 6:51pm Linda Lee:

nope. no string bending at all.
Avatar 6:51pm steve:

a pitch bend doesn't necessarily go all the way to another note
Avatar 6:51pm Linda Lee:

it was the same fucking note.
Avatar 6:51pm Undead83:

Let's Get it On should feature on a complete different list xP
Avatar 6:52pm Marcel M:

The old we're both right
  6:52pm FoFo (:

I agree with Andy. It's hitting the same note but guitar player is pitching over it. Technically not a note.
  6:52pm Listener Matt from DC:

Why isn't the list updated???? came to vote for Hendrix!
Avatar 6:52pm Linda Lee:

time to take a poll on the Keith Richards solo ..
Avatar 6:52pm Marcel M:

Going up a half step with bending on a guitar is very easy. Happens with a lot of bends. Just sayin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Dave in Vermont:

Matt, if he adds new choices the whole list starts over - so he stopped updating the list.
Avatar 6:53pm Undead83:

Hendrix Zappa Hendrix Zappa
  6:53pm Alex:

whole note bends on the other hand are hard
  6:53pm synpax:

Well why are they taking calls if you can't vote for any new titles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Dave in Vermont:

comedy, synpax
Avatar 6:54pm Linda Lee:

Hipster God Ken Freedman! a much better name than Station Manager Ken!
  6:54pm Alex:

yeah, I came here to vote for Geek U.S.A.
  6:55pm Rick grill:

no milkshake for the good ones
  6:55pm Alex:

this is barely a guitar solo. More just like a rhythmic break
  6:56pm flashbazbo:

If he's playing at the same string and fret it's a one note solo. The percent off pitch is micro not another identified tempered pitch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm sweeks:

I gotta say, this ballot is a little underwhelming. But go Neil!
Avatar 6:57pm Linda Lee:

it's a lesson in reduced standards, sweeks.
  6:57pm Alex:

lead fills /= a guitar solo
  6:57pm Colin:

That's two notes together
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Bootsie:

Just tuned in. Not sure what the question is, but I'm totally voting for Cinnamon Girl.
  6:57pm shtus:

this voting is rigged. it would be much fairer to just choose one song randomly. some people are just voting to support ken's elitist persona
  6:58pm Colin:

It's the same note on two strings.
  6:58pm P:

The Who, "I Can See For Miles" one-note solo at 2:15
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm coelacanth:

i had to vote for git gently weeps, even though they're all good and none of them are the best.
