Heya Sheila and boomers.
  3:04pm modchick65:

My dad had this record when I was a child.
Avatar 3:04pm The Contessa:

Hello Sheila, hello everyone. USA, you still there? Nice to see you back @modchick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm listener james from westwood:

One of the first musicals I heard the soundtrack to as a kid! And most of my friends were in a senior-year production of same. So, hell yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Sheila!
Avatar 3:04pm geezerette:

well those days are temporarily over.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Rob Kopp:

Hi Sheila and all.First: if you haven't seen this yet I can recommend this short introduction of The Netherlands: www.youtube.com...
  3:05pm Cliff in Prague:

Hello hello
  3:05pm chalmers:

In the musical, Anita's counterpoint is a female friend, but I always suspected that they changed it for the movie to give George Chakiris more screen time.

Thanks @TheContessa. I participate when I can. As for the US, we're here but wildly embarrassed. Pardon my blush.

My mom and dad loved "West Side Story" and lived this song. Thanks Shiela!
  3:09pm Listener Robert:

I have the WSS album too, in the garage. Don't know if it's from the movie sound track or recorded in conjunction with the play.
  3:09pm modchick65:

I really enjoyed the Kennedy Center Honors with Rita Moreno (same one as Carole King & George Lucas).
  3:09pm Cooh John:

Listened to WSS soundtrack as a kid. Still know the lyrics.
Avatar 3:09pm djsheilab:

Hey gang! Thought "America" would be an appropriate start for this week of insanity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Carmichael:

@Contessa: The US is currently on hold. Your call will be answered in the order it was received. Maybe, maybe not.
  3:11pm Listener Robert:

Outside Gilbert & Sullivan, has any number from a musical had its music taken for more later lyrics )mostly parody) than "America"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Adrian in London:

Evening all. @modchick Don't be embarrassed. Someone in Greece tweeted a photo of a menu in Athens yesterday that had a 'Breggsit' burger on it – burger with eggs. The UK's the laughing stock of Europe. Anyway, nice weather we're having…
  3:11pm modchick65:

I think, moving forward, I'm going to come on here every week with the first comment "I'm sorry."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Probably a better choice than Styx' "Miss America."
  3:13pm modchick65:

A much better choice than Neil Diamond's "America." And I say that as someone who generally loves Neil Diamond.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Rob Kopp:

@Adrian. Googled for the picture. That Breggsit burger looks very tasty
Avatar 3:14pm djsheilab:

I expected things to be bad, but not this bad and so bloody fast! ARGHHHHHH!!!! Well, I'm glad you're all here to so we can take comfort in each other + musique!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm JtotheK:

popcorn, to me (briefly somewhat) - similar to the 'northern soul' description in that numerous genres fall under the umbrella... but popcorn is slower tempo, jazzy... and comes from the JB 'popcorn' album which inspired the club in Belgium...
  3:31pm modchick65:

Oh, darling (upthread). I actually don't know how to cook... I'm too busy being an attorney. Have a lovely day doing whatever it is that you do.

@Sheila Here's something that will definitely cheer you up! www.harpersbazaar.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm northguineahills:

My wife went to the DC march, but I'm still stuck down here in FL waiting to see if any of these job leads will start.

She had a blast, but said it was suffocatingly crowded, and couldn't hear any of the speakers due to the lack of PAs.
  3:38pm modchick65:

When I was in 7th & 8th grade, there was a huge initiative (among schoolchildren) to raise money for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We sold these chocolate Statues of Liberty, and I still remember the poem (we had to memorize it). I can see the Statue of Liberty from my apartment and I visited Ellis Island, and it makes me happy to think that all those chocolate statues of liberty we sold went towards their present state.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Bronwyn Bishop:

thats true ngh, at a certain point we all started chanting "LET US MARCH!" because we were all packed in there listening to speakers whose words we couldn't make out
  3:40pm modchick65:

@Bronwyn... we must have been close to each other. My friends and I were at the side of the stage, and we couldn't move and were stuck there for 5 hours. They kept bringing speakers out who had a variation on the same 3 speeches, and we were like, "OMG. LET US MARCH." I was definitely joining in those chants!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Bronwyn Bishop:

yeah i was by the porta potties at one point and people were crushed up against them and others were trapped inside them, because they wouldn't let us move so we could listen to people say things we already knew we all agreed with otherwise we wouldn't be there. the actual marching part was great though.
Avatar 3:42pm Cecile:

Bronwyn, you might want to post about that on social media. I know that some people have complained that the chanting was disrespectful to the speakers, but if you could not hear them at all, it makes perfect sense. Maybe they can have better sound in future marches.
Avatar 3:44pm Cecile:

and modchick too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm northguineahills:

@Bronwyn: Yeah, she said they were in that chant. By 3 they slipped out to find a bathroom, and by the time they got back, finally, the place they were at started to moved. Her and her friends were wiped out by the time they finished. Yet, they found enough energy for karaoke afterwards (which is odd as she usually shies away from that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I did post about it Cecile, but no one cared (ha)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

And it's not just that we couldn't hear them. It was getting dangerous. We had to move because I personally was having trouble breathing and there were kids and 90-year-olds in there. Amazing cause and event but not really well organized.
Avatar 3:46pm Cecile:

I didn't see it, but good! I'm glad you did that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm dale:

was 'the two of us' a seekers type of vocal group?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm northguineahills:

@modchick: We collected quarters in our elementary school in Florida, and would dump them at the front of our cafeteria each week. Later, I remember watching the ceremony that started the refurbishment of the Statue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Stevel:

BB: Wondering if it was the unexpectedly large turnout? Good problem to have, but, as you note, serious.
Avatar 3:47pm crateslinger:

My daughter went to dc on the NOW bus from NYC. She took a picture of John Kerry walking his dog. She got home late and slept in. Said it was like standing in a huge crowd for five hours.
Avatar 3:47pm Cecile:

I did hear that there were some big logistical issues.
  3:47pm modchick65:

The problem was that the speakers were all directed down the street, but there was a huge area next to the stage and behind the stage where people were standing (and there were no speakers in that direction). As for disrespectful, I mean... whatever. We had literally been standing there for 5 hours and could not move. My feet were killing me, my back was killing me, and it was beyond claustrophobic at that point. It was waaaaaaaay too long, and I'm sure others were feeling that, too. It was most likely one of those situations where every womens organization asks if they can speak, the organizers don't want to say no, and then they end up all saying the same thing. There was too much repetition in the speeches (I've heard that from a lot of people). It was just too long to be standing there. Way too long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Stevel:

My daughter lives in DC and took part with friends who came from out of town. No serious complaints from their experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Yeah, I think the issue was that there were twice as many people as expected because only half the people who came signed up online.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm dale:

hello kids - i dug that 'two of us' track. never heard of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Stevel:

Good to be aware of for next time! Too much success!
Avatar 3:48pm wearpants:

Dad on Women's March in NYC (his first protest since 1970): "It was a zoo, but what do you expect with 400,000 people?" It's always a zoo. 4,000, 400 or 40, you show up a protest & no one has any idea what's going on. This is a good thing, it's the most basic form of democracy: "Let's agree to all walk in the same direction". We need the practice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm dale:

oh- my first post did post - thought it got absorbed by the ether.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Stevel:

wearpants: Awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Bronwyn Bishop:

right pants, cause there's going to be a lot more where that came from! I'm already buying train tickets for the april 29 climate march
Avatar 3:49pm crateslinger:

The permit was for 200,000, but way too many people signed up, so the march was actually cancelled! There was a rally, but no march. They were totally unprepared for the whole thing. Glad nobody died, especially Bronwyn Bishop.
Avatar 3:50pm Cecile:

I completely understand that, modchick. I hadn't heard anything but love and peace and no reports of crushing crowds or potential dangers to people who couldn't move.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Crateslinger, in DC we did march eventually. The one in Chicago was cancelled but I think all the other marches actually happened.
Avatar 3:52pm Cecile:

St. Paul definitely happened. it looked great.
Avatar 3:52pm crateslinger:

BB, hm. My daughter told me DC march was cancelled, but the rally was not. What does she know. Dumb kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Rob Kopp:

Good tip Adrian
  3:53pm modchick65:

@crateslinger - The Washington Post was reporting (while we were there) that the actual march was cancelled, but we did march. I don't know what that was about.
Avatar 3:54pm crateslinger:

I think the official city permit or whatever was disallowed. They didn't stop anybody from showing up and you could do what you wanted, but the organization was not in charge of an official march.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Adrian in London:

The London march was so huge, it took about an hour to walk 100 metres. After three hours we made it out of Grosvenor Square, where the US embassy is, by which time the speeches had already started – and probably finished – in Trafalgar Square. Didn't really matter though.
Avatar 3:55pm djsheilab:

Glad you dug it @dale!
  3:56pm Mandy:

Dont forget the Climate Change /March for Science march April 29! theres bound tk be one in NYC that day too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Adrian in London:

She said there were only like three cops too. If this had been a dude march, the carnage would be unprecedented. Talking piles of dead.
  3:57pm Samoan Nick:

You play a lot of stuff from genres I'd normally hate but I end up liking what you choose. Discerning is good!
  3:57pm modchick65:

There were a bunch of cops, but they were having a good time.

The march in Madison drew the equivalent of 41% of the city's population — over 100,000, A great crowd with a great spirit.
  4:00pm modchick65:

I really want to play guitar like this song and the Ruth Brown song.
  4:00pm modchick65:

Go Madison!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Stevel:

The Chicago march became a rally in Grant Park (?). I heard the DC march organizers chose not to pursue an actual march, as there were so many people.

Big crowds can be scary in the best of circumstances, and this sounds like the best possible scenario.

Madison (alma matter) kicks ass!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Stevel:

Fort Wayne F---ing Indiana had at least 1,000, which, for a totally red area isn't half bad. Indy had 10s of thousands, by the look of coverage.

In the 80's Arnold Rypens had an originals programma in Belgium once a month on Saturday evening from 10 to 12. That was the first programma for which I stayed at home (SBB is the second). red and yellow is the worst color combo for anything that doesn't explicitly involve ketchup and mustard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm steveo:

how about pork 'n' beans, @peas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm frozen_peas:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm JtotheK:

Avatar 4:29pm Cecile:

great Jules Shear song.
  4:30pm chalmers:

Around the same time, Cyndi Lauper also had a hit with Jules Shear's "All Through the Night."
Avatar 4:32pm geezerette:

Great idea Sheila!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Rob Kopp:

And both Jules Shear songs are in the originals book that Sheila mentioned

Or a piñata. But what would be inside an orange-tufted piñata?

Bust it open, and find out!
  4:35pm Cliff in Prague:

Bile. Lots of bile
  4:36pm Cliff in Prague:

"psychedelic reggae enka" -- wha...???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm listener james from westwood:

Wait, wasn't this song used, in diff't form, in "Kill Bill Pt 1," near the end?
Avatar 4:38pm djsheilab:

@Cliff in Prague The album is fantastic!
  4:38pm Mandy:

yeah James it sounds like "Urami Bushi" but the words are different.
  4:39pm Cliff in Prague:

I have to buy this now Sheila, wow!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm listener james from westwood:

Cool, I just had this huge deja vu feeling on the tune!
  4:40pm Cliff in Prague:

Reggae & enka played on wacky synths. Totally works
Avatar 4:45pm Cecile:

YES. This is my jam.
  4:46pm Marc15:

Avatar 4:47pm Cecile:

Boy, John Prine's voice sure seems to have changed.

She is so good. Her first venture after she got clean was as a cook.
  4:51pm Marc15:

@Cecile Thank you. It sure is a great song
Avatar 4:53pm Cecile:

I heard it first in the throes of my first breakup and it was surprisingly comforting in a sad way - just getting the feelings out there.

  5:09pm modchick65:

This song is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Carmichael:

OK, back from luncheon. About 25,000 marchers in Sacramento, including my wife and daughters. Thoroughly pissed off the right wing rednecks, who started whining worse than they have for the last 8 years. One of these primo assholes owns a local brewery (google "12 Rounds"), and someone took all his posts and put them on his business home page. It's naturally gone viral, and most of his suppliers, business connections and customers have evaporated. I'm enjoying this particular soap opera.
Avatar 5:10pm djsheilab:

@Dominick Hello!
  5:10pm Cliff in Prague:

Thank you Sheila! & good night Sophisticates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm Rob Kopp:

While drinking my beer, when Sheila mentioned 'another drink song', I had to think of Webb Pierce's drink song There stands the glass. You Tube contains a couple a couple of female covers I had never heard before (a.o. Wanda Jackson, Loretta Lynn)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Carmichael:

I'm Bjorn again!
  5:17pm adam:

Carm, he sounds like some of my in-laws. They think that any action of any kind after Trump won was just sour grapes, and there is nothing to worry about. Sigh.
  5:22pm modchick65:

I think Sheila's found the theme song for the next 4 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Carmichael:

The biggest victim of this election cycle has been civility. Aah well, at least we have the music and Sheila B.
Avatar 5:24pm djsheilab:

Absolutely @Carmichael.

I love everything you are playing girl!! I've been away from the WFMU dials for a spell and this is my new must listen to show every week. Thanks!!

The annual Cinco de Mayo party at the White House is going to be awkward this year, that is certain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Carmichael:

HA HA Ken .... :)

Heard you mention John pizzarelli earlier...I was just telling someone this afternoon that he's one of our nicest clients (at the rehearsal studio)
Avatar 5:34pm djsheilab:

@mike east He puts on a fantastic show too! I saw him this past week at Birdland.
  5:36pm Schnipp:

Someone refresh my memory: is Jonesy hosting the morning show this weekend? Or did I miss it? Or next Monday-Tuesday?

  5:46pm modchick65:

Wow, I always really disliked the popular version of this song (You Made Me So Very Happy), but this version is really great.
Avatar 5:47pm Parq:

Wow, eating up this Bobbie cover. She's just the greatest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Carmichael:

I didn't know Brenda Holloway wrote this. I also disliked the BS&T version.
  5:47pm modchick65:

I generally hated BS&T... even as a child. That Spinning Wheel song drove me bonkers. I hated that guy's voice.
Avatar 5:49pm Cecile:

Cool, Eugene McDaniel cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Carmichael:

At the height of BS&T's popularity, Thomas sang a TV commercial jingle. I wanna say Best Foods mayo, or some salad dressing. Ugh ...
