Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Notable rendition of Just In Time: In the parking lot at Club Bene in Morgan NJ, summer '73, when a small fire had broken out inside, the actors appearing at the time in the dinner theater production of Bells Are Ringing, which featured the song, sang a chorus, referencing the fire department arriving...."just in time"...

After last week's huge marches locally and nationally, local headline called the showings "Historic Dissent," which struck me right away as a clean, solid, entirely apt description, and reminder of what's needed. Speaking of pronunciation, there never seems to be a correct way to pronounce the name of that Swiss artist who designed the creature from the movie "Alien". H. R. Giger. Is it "guy-ger" or "gee-jhay" or what??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Parq:

Though I'm Irish-Polish, raised Catholic, I will answer your question with a question -- what do you have to drink with it? Go with the Ruben if you have a really good craft beer. Go with the minute steaks if you have a nice red wine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm doctorjazz:

So, @Dean, I'm a sucker for these recommendations, have the Discogs page open. Question: not familiar with the band, would it make more sense to start with a studio album or so? And, if so, which?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Uncle Michael:

Hmmm...not a wine drinker...
Avatar 1:20pm still b/p:

I love the BSS album - but this weren't on it! Bonus track, I presume...
  1:22pm Dean:

@doctorjazz: A few nights ago UM asked for a recommendation of a Zeke record, and I waffled. Gonna do the same re: 'O'. I heard their studio albums a long time ago, c.1978-'80. I bought the live record on a lark, having sought out unsuccessfully in record stores (not online) the older records, which I've never owned. What impresses me about the live one is the extent--almost 80 minutes of show. The production is a little hot, i.e., too live, but it's a live album! I'd say go for the live one. Completely forgot they'd recorded "Almost Saturday Night"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm coelacanth∅:

One thing about growing up in NorthNewEngland - w/ the hills - you didn't pick up stations from 1,000s of miles away. Struggled to pull in WBCN Boston for instance - which efd worked @. Then again - many many stations bookmarked in iTunes - playing cat & mouse w/ stream addresses when everyone wants you should use their Players...maybe people stumble on stuff w/ Sirius XM & the like? You can Search genres & find stuff...

Jazz Records are 100 years old this year - then blink (not really but it will seem that way) & it will be the Mills & Marx bros. ...

My experience has been that no matter how I pronounce it, someone is going to correct me with yet another pronunciation. But I will stick with gee-gr with hard G's for now.

Chinese New Year is tomorrow (Sat.) - full day after the New Moon - & gets celebrated for two whole weeks (to Full Moon) - so good time for Chinatowns.

for any historians
of recording techniques
here are 2 interviews
w/perhaps my favorite engineer
Avatar 2:00pm still b/p:

Did a Chinese New Year's walk through Boston Chinatown some years ago. The firecracker noise and smoke and smell wuz substantial.
Avatar 2:08pm βrian:

Ooh, that reminds me: Gotta get the little red envelopes for cash gifts for the kiddies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm coelacanth∅:

i had a date in chinatown years ago. we didn't know it was the new year time and i did not know that she was terrified of fireworks; but there was no indication of the new year celebration until suddenly a giant commotion broke out. crowds of people seemed to come out of nowhere and a 3-4 person dragon puppet doing a warning dance in front of a particular store that i guess had dishonored some sort of code of ethics and fireworks going off everywhere. it was pretty Crazy!
  2:10pm Dean:

Brings to mind "Yankee Doodle Bugs."
Avatar 2:12pm still b/p:

"Chinese New Year is a joyful time for all but singles above the normal matrimonial age, because parents and relatives think they should be settled down. Some singles resort to renting a boyfriend or girlfriend for the New Year to avoid the awkwardness!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm coelacanth∅:

haha yes, pretending to be intimate with someone isn't awkward at all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Doug Schulkind:
