Hello Doug, Somehow this gif is still endearing. Reminds me of the Canadian German Shepherd being teased with bacon and other meats.

#1A in our hearts: Brian in UK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am Doug Schulkind:

And who shall be #1C?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am doctorjazz:

@Brian in UK
Maybe I'll grow up in 2017...(clever is asking a lot)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

Mmmm, bacon! And other meats. Such a rare thing in our household these days...
Avatar 8:59am duke:

Happy almost New Year everyone

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am doctorjazz:

@Brian, sounds good (got 1 more to get through College, then may be able to pull it off as well).
@Duke, @Doug, were you able to download the files?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

I'm beginning to think that you were nobody if you didn't die in 2016.
Avatar 9:11am Flash Strap:

hi drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Present company excluded, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

The grab-you-by-the-throat clarity of this field recording is what gets me. The background sounds of human and animal activity only enhance the proceedings.

It is a GOOD DAY now that you're here, FLASH STRAP.
  9:14am Artie Haywire:

Onesies (#1Cs) for all my Drummer friends!! Happy Almost New Year!!
Avatar 9:17am Brian in UK:

I asked Santa for a Christmas Pudding onesie but none was forthcoming.

Marimbas are saintly. This is heaven, who said nothing happens? Hey I can see our house from here.

I adore the sounds of insects and children in the background of field recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Uncle Michael:

Musicians are always messing with me when I'm trying to records children and insects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

There will be much achos and achas on today's programme, Uncle Michael.

  9:55am Mr C:

Karl Blau was a great 2016 turn on..modest in ambition, but direct to the heart. Evokes Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am annie:

i've missed the entire first hour of the show.. sigh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

Spot on, Mr C. And that record was aiming for the great pumping heart of the body Campbell/Webb.

Oh annie, there are always more hours to come!
Avatar 9:59am Brian in UK:

Doug, we are going to have SHRIMPS for tea this evening. If the BOATS have been out.

@Mr C: same here, he performed here not long ago but I couldn't go.

I like the way you think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

It wasn't in the original plan, but you have influenced the selector!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am doctorjazz:

Always liked this Batdorf and Rodney track (and had to admire their name).
  10:09am Gary:

Greetings from Luang Prabang!
Avatar 10:11am fred:

I bought a few of these Kelp records at a Laura Veirs show
Avatar 10:12am Brian in UK:

Hello Gary, I was looking at Flash Straps avatar earlier and it got me thinking of Ankor Wat, not a million miles from you. Our daughter went there a few years ago. You need a bicycle to get around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am melinda:

That would explain why Laura Veirs videos appeared on my youtube page after viewing/listening to Karl Blau. Which was nice, as I wasn't familiar with her music before. There are some charming animations in a couple of them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am melinda:

hi Gary, how is Luang Prabang?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Doesn't the beginning of this Najat Aâtabou cut sound like the opening of the "Mission Impossible" theme?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

G A R Y!!!
I am enjoying your vacation vicariously! Keep the photos coming!
  10:15am Gary:

@Brian, we saw a model of Angkor Wat in Bangkok
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, fred! Some of those Kelps are great treasures.
  10:16am Gary:

Doug! I tuned in just in time to hear my favorite Moroccan singer
Avatar 10:17am still b/p:

Keep your clothes on at the Angkor Wat complex or you get arrested. It happens. Then it happens some more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

There are NO coincidences, Gary!
Avatar 10:19am Brian in UK:

I was given this as a present. It was recorded on site but the record company is based in Tucson.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

The music on this Editions Hassania cassette later was released on the Globestyle (remember that great label?!) record "Voice of the Atlas," which was my first introduction to Najat Aâtabou.

Mind still blown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am melinda:

This is pretty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Ike:

I'm jealous! I love Luang Prabang! Don't miss the big morning market in the southern part of town, if it's still there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Let us all hail Jan Chamberlin today, the singer who has resigned from the prestigious Mormon Tabernacle Choir over its decision to sing for the Trump inauguration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

Happy New Year Doug! Your greatest hits of 2016 are pretty great so far...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am melinda:

wow, Patti Smith is 70. I'm looking forward to her next memoir, though it might be a while.
  10:46am Dean:

$200?
  10:47am Dean:

Legal casebooks have skyrocketed from an already high ~$80 c.2004 to ~$200 these days. Insane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Not all that close, Dean.
Avatar 10:47am coelacanth∅greetings:

Avatar 10:48am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am doctorjazz:

$200, man, that's amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, coelacanth!

The answer: $247
(I ended up renting a copy for $92. Only minimal highlighting permitted and I must return it promptly at semester's end.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am doctorjazz:

Red and his xylophone playing Bix, great stuff(nice soft sound for a mallet instrument).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

You are the captain of my shrimp boat, Brian in UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am doctorjazz:

Speaking of sounds, Pee Wee, love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
Bix composed "In a Mist" and released it as a record in 1927. And he performed it ON PIANO!
Avatar 10:59am Brian in UK:

Love Bix's Barnacle Bill. Put that on the end of mixtapes (CDs)
  11:04am Dean:

Don't tell me: it's a class in Slave Capitalism. Law school texts are generally worthless outside of the classroom. It's not as if they are an investment to which you'd turn during your career.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

No, Dean, it is a class on human behavior in the field of gerontology.
Avatar 11:11am quinn:

"Let's listen to some gamelan" -- my five favorite words
Avatar 11:11am bobdc:

I recently found a local gamelan and joined. Not as fancy as what we're hearing, but a lot of fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Glad I said them in that order, quinn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
The Univ. of Pittsburgh has a fine student gamelan crew. It's led by Andrew Weintraub, who is a faithful educator of Indonesian musics. I learned a while back that he was pals with Henk den Toom, proprietor of the wonderful blog Madrotter.

And Henk den Toom is the source for the next selection on today's show!
  11:18am Dean:

If I could rewind to, say, my twenties or even thirties, I would strongly consider studying gerontology and related fields (e.g., elder law). Also, architectural acoustics, and of course poetry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Seeing as already qualify for the "senior" discount for Pittsburgh Pirates tickets, I figure gerontology is the field for me.
Avatar 11:22am coelacanth∅greetings:

the javanese gamelan (presumably that was javanese?) is so relaxing to me. i think other people here were wondering what that clanging was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Relaxing and clanging are not mutually exclusive here!
  11:23am Dean:

@Doug: Tell the truth: you wrote in your personal statement for your grad school apps that you were primarily interested in gerontology for the senior discounts, didn't you? I proudly display my (yet unaccepted) AARP invitations on my office door, adjacent to a news clipping about Lemmy's failing health.
Avatar 11:25am Brian in UK:

The Gamelan I referred to at 10:19 all have players from locals around Angkor Wat. Non professionals. The music is part of their lives.
Avatar 11:26am Brian in UK:

Is this Turkey's Eurovision entry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Next up, Greece's!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
I am paying for grad school with my seniors savings!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

So many great musical connections go through Wesleyan. I would have gone there if my sister hadn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

If I had gone to Wesleyan, I would have studied with Ed Blackwell. Amazing how different my life would've been.

I still love my sister, though.

Is the luxurious soul song compound that usually occupies the last segment being shut down and shipped by to Putin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
No soul set today. Instead, next week's show will comprise all of the closing songs of the soul sets from all of 2016. It will be a soultacular.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Doug and Drummer gang. Thought I'd pop in and offer Happy New Year thoughts and here I find there's a whole lot of monkey business going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Hey! It's Ken From Hyde Park! How're you doing, Ken?!
Avatar 11:48am Brian in UK:

Doug, this show was quite wonderful.

Tom Waits for no man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

The last 11 minutes shall suck, Brian in UK. Or maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Ken From Hyde Park:

Quite good, thanks. Kind of excited to pull down the 2016 calendar and start afresh. Hoping for a kinder, gentler 2017.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Ike:

What about Mary Wing? She coming over next week too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

You can say that again, Ken. Here's hoping 2016 was the low point. (I am not holding my breath.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

@Ike
Yes! She will be on Tuesday mornings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

This and every program is my Valentine to you, dear listeners. Without you I would be nothing (but a guy sitting in the middle of floor in his underwear listening to records).
