A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hello Trouble.
The genius with words. You can understand why the new Nobel Laureate named himself after him.

I never get tired of Under Milk Wood.

I hope the cover for this John Cage meets Sun Ra is something like this: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:30am Sem Chumbo:

@BiUK: I can see that. Funnily, I found a 1980 BBC Sir Henry at Rawlinson's End on YouTube, and Viv's language featured prominently through-out. Almost too dense to take in.
Avatar 9:30am Trouble:

sadly @andrew c it is not...

  9:49am kevlicki:

Trouble, I went to a secret DIY performance in an old cement mine, in honor of the solstice, up in Kingston!
Was really amazing, first the total darkness we walked through, then the lanterns that were lit that had our resolutions on them and set adrift on the water filled tunnels.
It feels important to create our own customs
Avatar 9:51am Chris from DC:

Hey hey
Avatar 9:51am Trouble:

that sounds so perfect @kevlicki!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am melinda:

hello Trouble and all

@sem: I have a copy of that Sir Henry. It's really entertaining.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am melinda:

@henry: wow! That would be a cool place to visit.
Avatar 10:12am βrian:

Just got an egg delivery from the neighbors. Time for flan! Has anyone tried cardamom in the caramel?
Avatar 10:13am Sem Chumbo:

@ βrian:yes, Viv was so full of ideas, I am almost afraid to get started on that link BiUK sent, I might disappear for months on end :-D

Cardamon will work fine.
Avatar 10:13am Trouble:

i have never made flan @ brian. what is wrong with me?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Webhamster Henry:

I too am a not a little fan of Mr. Stanshell's. We pause now for this commercial message:
www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am annie:

hhmm, flan... i've never made it either. is that simlar to custard?
Avatar 10:16am glenn:

i don't know about caramel, but i put cardamom pods in oatmeal, as well as vanilla and cinnamon.
Avatar 10:17am glenn:

along with, that should be.
Avatar 10:17am FMthatguy:

Morning all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Passaic River Blues:

I love this song.
Avatar 10:17am βrian:

Yes, it's custard. I'm loco about cardamom. I often make a version of kheer with short-grain brown rice that has loads of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Webhamster Henry:

@Melinda: it's a little dangerous when it's iced over, but otherwise open, and it's the only publicly open mine of the dozens of former cement mines in Ulster County. It's an amazing space - I play music in there a lot, and the vast majority of it is under water.
  10:18am Listener Robert:

I don't know, Brian, but soon I'm going to attempt what Mother used to make for Grandpa & Grandma when they visited: baked rice pudding. I recently moved into a house w an electric oven, which is very easy to use. Previously all I'd had were gas ovens & electric broilers, and the only times I ever lit a gas oven were ~40 yrs. ago to broil with.
Avatar 10:18am Trouble:

2/3 of the way through swing time @passaic river blues: thank you!
Avatar 10:18am glenn:

i really like the indian rice pudding, with cardamom and lots of rose water.
Avatar 10:19am Chris from DC:

Glenn, seconded.
Avatar 10:19am Sem Chumbo:

Unhinged @ webmaster Henry. Pure, unadulterated Viv-idness.
Thanks.
  10:20am Listener Robert:

The first time I try, I'm going to use whole eggs, but if that succeeds then the next time I'll try separating them to make a meringue topping.
Avatar 10:20am βrian:

@LR: gas ovens have much improved, though I prefer electric.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am annie:

custard was one of the first desserts i learned to make, i must have been 12,13...love custard SO much!
Avatar 10:21am βrian:

I caught part of Liz B's Guadeloupe ambient tape. Really nice.
Avatar 10:23am βrian:

Trouble, perhaps you should do a recording of your hens.
Avatar 10:25am FMthatguy:

Oo, this song!
Avatar 10:25am Trouble:

@brian they can make a racket, after they have laid an egg especially. but usually they are super chill. they do coo at us when we come out to collect eggs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Passaic River Blues:

@Trouble: in all sincerity, my pleasure! Thank *you* for injecting aural loveliness into my otherwise invariably dreary Thursdays!
  10:27am BlackElkSpeaks:

I have nothing to say, and I'm saying it
Avatar 10:28am βrian:

Same for us. Our neighbors have their girls right near the fence, so we often wake to their cooing and soft clucking.
  10:29am briania:

Lovely mix this winter morning.
Avatar 10:33am Brian in UK:

When I lay an egg the whole world has to know that I have performed a miracle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Ken From Hyde Park:

Nice for me...reception on the WMFU/90.1 signal is excellent this morning.
Avatar 10:34am Brian in UK:

Does oatmeal = porridge. If so, I take mine straight. No salt.
Avatar 10:36am Brian in UK:

It is funny the number of people that think you need a cock/rooster to make hens lay.
Avatar 10:36am βrian:

@BUK: Can't porridge involve a variety of grains? Buckwheat porridge is a recent fav in our house.
Avatar 10:39am Brian in UK:

@βrian usually Oats plain and simple. Buckwheat flour for galettes or in Soba noodles
  10:43am mary:

love your show! and today really need it. At least Trouble is on the radio! Yay
Avatar 10:43am Whosondephone:

I thought that sounded like Prince.
  10:44am Joe McG:

It's OK to talk about Artist A, Trouble--that song was legally released on the "Planet Earth" album by You Know Who.
  10:46am Peter:

oooh Flan! Perfect complement to nochebuenas tamales !
Avatar 10:50am Trouble:

thanks mary! and thanks briania! and thanks joe mcgasko
  10:59am Peter:

I gotta get that Swinging Mlle's record! <3!
  11:01am kevlicki:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Mick:

A brilliant and beautiful show Trouble! You're helping me celebrate my grandfather's 99th birthday today.
Avatar 11:18am Trouble:

merci and wow! that is outstanding @mick. happy day for you and him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Passaic River Blues:

Oh man, the solution to a needless and avoidable argument with a conservative co-worker is to devote myself exclusively to TMW right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am joeray:

@glenn:.. and I substitute raw honey for the granular and brown sugar!
Avatar 11:22am βrian:

@joeray: do you have to adjust for the liquid of the honey?
Avatar 11:23am glenn:

yeah, im avoiding sugar as much as possible, which pretty much eliminates any desserts from my life. about the only one i really miss is the pastei de nata.
Avatar 11:27am βrian:

In heaven there ain't no kheer, so I eat it while I'm here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am joeray:

@Brian: Yes! Approximately 3/4 of granulated sugar called for in a recipe and a slightly reduced cooking time to avoid over-browning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Mick:

Thanks Trouble! 'Wisdom of elders' and all.
Avatar 11:31am Sem Chumbo:

Grooving along w/ this one.
Avatar 11:32am northguineahills:

I had to avoid sugar for the last 15 years except for special occasions. For reasons unbeknownst to me, since I left Brooklyn, I can actually have an occasional desert w/o troubling my GI tract too much. Heck, I'm drinking coffee again as well.
Avatar 11:37am Brian in UK:

Trouble, been dipping in and out today. Time to rustle up some chili.
Have a cool Yule and lets hope for a peaceful 2017.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am joeray:

@Brian: can't substitute the caramel in that recipe! Looks yummy!!!
