Hi everyone. I'm sorry. So very sorry.

Thank God it's Sheila time! Hello Sheila, hello everyone!

The one, the only ... Sheila B.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm pinholga:

Sheila can make this better... Right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi Sheila and everybody, this is just what we all need :)
Avatar 3:04pm The Contessa:

Hello Ken! You OK?
  3:04pm Nina:

Heal us please, Sheila!! <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Adrian in London:

If anyone can, Sheila can. (But please don't play anything as great as Juniore this week, which has proved to be financially ruinous sweeping up all their vinyl!)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Summer and Michael:

Holy cow, what a great opener, Sheila! Thank you. We love you!
Avatar 3:06pm The Contessa:

I think we might all be putting Sheila under a bit of pressure!

Afternoon, Sheila and all. (And Bronwyn! Your debut program was a delight!)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm chris:

hi. smokin hot start to the show, djsheilab.
Avatar 3:19pm statoj:

Go, Mary Ford! And love that fuzz bass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Rob Kopp:

Didn't know Les Paul & Mary Ford recorded stuff like this. I only know Les Paul from his speeded up guitar. Play their singles on 33-rpm or 16-rpm and you probably get the speed it was recorded. But this cover is by far the best track I've ever heard from them.
  3:22pm modchick65:

I am really enjoying the show today.
Avatar 3:22pm statoj:

Yes, I had never heard Mary sing before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Rob Kopp:

Did they do the same trick with her voice?
Avatar 3:24pm statoj:

Modchick, it is just the best to hang out here with such fine people every week but especially this week.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I love that Nilsson song so much. Thanks Sheila <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Listener James: Thanks so much :D
Avatar 3:24pm statoj:

I was gliding here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Adrian in London:

Oh, thought that was Kathryn Williams. She's great, and is, incidentally, demanding healing hugs from her audience at the merch stand on her current tour!
Avatar 3:26pm The Contessa:

We also have to thank Sylvie for Michael!
  3:26pm JakeGould:

That Nilsson song reminds me of "Midnight Cowboy." Especially the ending where Ratzo Rizzo dies on the bus to Florida and Joe Buck breaks down and hugs him and cries.
  3:28pm JakeGould:

Screw those mice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Jake: spoilers!

just kidding ;)
  3:28pm Matt in Hillsborough:

well at least he had something nice before he croaked
  3:29pm P-90:

Nice story @Sheila B!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@The Contessa - Hi, hope you're having a good week. I'm feeling kind of stressed, but a quiet walk in the woods should set things straight. That and some time here in the Boom Boom Room.
Avatar 3:30pm The Contessa:

@Ken, OK good, just checking
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 3:30pm listener james from westwood:

statoj: Gliding also works!
  3:31pm JakeGould:

@BronwynB: And then Joe Buck got the Infinity Gauntlet and fought off Darth Vader in Chinatown.
Avatar 3:32pm The Contessa:

Bee Gees!! Huzzah!
  3:33pm JakeGould:

"Sheila, my daughter... I have bad news for you... The Bee Gees are men. All men."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Rob Kopp:

I prefer women with a deep dark voice over men with a head voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm JtotheK:

@JakeGould - and then Joe Buck took the diamonds from Reservoir Dogs and shoved them in the briefcase from Pulp Fiction.
  3:35pm JakeGould:

@JtotheK: And then he flew off on the Maltese Falcon with Chewbacca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Bronwyn Bishop:

@Rob: I agree, I love deep voices, although my two favorite bands both have prominent falsettos (they're also both from LA, a place I despise.) hmm
  3:36pm Brendan:

It's understandable. There voices are in no way indicative of their chestial foliage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Bronwyn Bishop:

This sounds like an amazing movie, guys, I wish it really existed
  3:36pm jerry h.:

Hello fellow cool music aficionados! and a special Hello to djsheilab! looking forward to another unique musical experience!I can"t believe I missed Nilsson. My all-time favorite movie "Midnight Cowboy".
  3:36pm P-90:

Something about this particular Bee Gees track is reminiscent of an Alan Parsons composition/production.
  3:37pm JakeGould:

Anyone remember being shocked when you realized that Rick Astley is white?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm JtotheK:

@JakeGould and then Joe Buck invented the cuckoo clock with Harry Lime because he was the Third Man.
  3:38pm jerry h.:

"...and keep your meathooks off my radio!"
  3:38pm andrew:

My brother once said,"notice how you never see the bee gees and alvin and the chipmunks in the same room at the same time".
Avatar 3:38pm djsheilab:

HAHAHAHAHA! Brilliant @JakeGould!
  3:39pm JakeGould:

@JtotheK: And that is what they call... The crying game!
Avatar 3:39pm statoj:

@Jake, not only that, Rick is British! To hear him talk you would never suspect what a soul voice he possesses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@JakeGould - That's this guy, right? youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Rob Kopp:

I had the same with George Ezra. When I heard his voice for the first time in a record shop I would have guessed he would have been old and black, not young and white
  3:42pm JakeGould:

Also, anyone remember your parents debating whether Divine was a man or not? My parents didn't believe it.

Also my dad (R.I.P. I love you dad) believed that Father Guido Sarducci was an actual Church official.
Avatar 3:44pm KevinfromBayRidge:

And then another Rick said his problems don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Bend Sinister:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm joe:

@jakegould He wasn't?
Avatar 3:45pm statoj:

@Jake, if your parents were watching John Waters movies, they must have been hip enough to figure it out.
  3:45pm BennettCap:

Hot! Ha!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm listener james from westwood:

Ooh, dig this Singsiri track.
  3:47pm JakeGould:

@statoj: They watched lots of talk shows and watched whatever movie appeared on TV. So this was when "Hairspray" made it mainstream and many people were first exposed to Divine.
Avatar 3:47pm statoj:

This Onuma song sounds like a parallel Thai universe if a Brecht/Weil musical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Rob Kopp:

During the last Kink convention in NL we got Dave Berry singing this with The Kast Off Kinks feat. a couple of Kinks-members (Mick Avory, Kohn Dalton)
Avatar 3:50pm statoj:

Well I confess that when I saw the "other" male role that Divine plays in Hairspray I realized that I had forgotten he was a man. As a man his face is kind of crooked but as a woman he just looks very Baltimore. (Having lived there 20 yrs, I am allowed to say that.)
  3:52pm modchick65:

Ok. The Ramones "Pet Cemetery" is seriously the song that is going to make me start crying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm joe:

This is the song that introduced me to the Ramones when I was 13 years old.
  3:53pm Listener Robert:

I've always liked the song, but could someone please explain if there's some metaphoric meaning to "I don't want to be buried in a pet cemetery"?
  3:54pm JakeGould:

@joe: You were introduced to the Ramones at your Bar Mitzvah? What wonderful and joyous day to become a man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Rob Kopp:

The Ramones and a synthesizer just doesn't fit together
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm joe:

It was because the movie was about being buried in a Pet Cemetery and coming back to life.
Avatar 3:55pm Sem Chumbo:

If there was ever a need for serious Boom Boom, it is now.
Hiya, Sheila B., and sophisticates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm joe:

@jakegould even cooler was that they played the Ramones at my Bar Mitzvah. Even more interesting is that I'm not even Jewish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Rob Kopp:

Who's the Whor.. ible person?
  3:55pm Listener Robert:

So I gather, joe, but is that all just an indirect way of singing, "My life sucks"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm joe:

No I think it was meant to be literal reference to the fact that the character did not want to come back to life as a zombie.
  3:57pm JakeGould:

@joe: Ha!
Avatar 3:58pm statoj:

I just like how he rhymed bury with cemetery.
  3:58pm Carmichael:

Heya Sheila and Boomers. Listening in from home.
  3:59pm Listener Robert:

I like the way the different chords carry the melody.

Also, what cx if any does it have to Stephen King's novel "Pet Sematary"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm joe:

@listener Robert it was written for the film
  4:01pm Bill W:

I teared up at the K Musgraves song, Sheila.
  4:03pm Brendan:

I thought Rick Astley was rather canine:
  4:03pm modchick65:

Sheila, I think there are a few pop quiz night. The trick is finding one that focuses on music earlier than the past 20 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Rob Kopp:

This weekend is Europe's biggest record fair in Utrecht. Here you can see how big www.recordplanet.nl... (and it also got a picture of another female deejay I like very much: deejay Miss Twist; and there's even a picture of me beside her, presenting part 3 of my book!)
  4:04pm Alex in Brooklyn:

The theme: this group is also made up of hairy men?
Avatar 4:05pm Mary Wing:

There's a bar that does a "How I Met Your Mother" quiz; I haven't found any pop quiz bars though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Rob Kopp:

and what do you think of the picture of that records-dress!
Avatar 4:06pm djsheilab:

@Mary Wing We should do a WFMU one!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Adrian in London:

@Rob Here's a great article about the Utrecht record fair by John Doran of The Quietus. Features Andy Votel thequietus.com...
  4:07pm Joe McG:

If WFMU does one, I want Sheila and Gaylord on my team! (Hi, Sheila! Wow of a show, as usual.)
Avatar 4:07pm Mary Wing:

I thought of that, Sheila! I'd love to do a Name That Tune with FMU DJs battling it out.
  4:07pm andrew:

stephen king is/was a big fan of ramones, acdc etc. acdc came up with "who made who" for "maximum overdrive".
Avatar 4:08pm djsheilab:

Anyone hearing a common theme or have I made it too challenging? :)
Avatar 4:09pm Mary Wing:

The theme of this set is GODZILLA NEEDS PRETTY GIRLS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm joe:

I have not figured out the theme but I do love the music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Rob Kopp:

Thanks Adrian. I'm going to read it after the show. That hall is sooo big, I'm always thinking: where do I start?
Avatar 4:09pm statoj:

Rob, I think she is a nurse fighting her way out of a bubble...
Avatar 4:11pm statoj:

All songs by Stevie Wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Rob Kopp:

@Joe: The theme could be foreign language, or I don't understand a @#$% word of what you're saying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm pinholga:

They're all Four Lads covers?
  4:12pm JakeGould:

I wish this was a bar so my guess could be "More Beer?"

  4:15pm jpop lovher:

I like the album covers very nice
  4:15pm JakeGould:

@joe: Yes! That sample is ground into my consciousness from many hours of MTV.
  5:14pm modchick65:

A guy in my office went as Art Garfunkel for Halloween. He was wearing black pants, a black turtleneck, a grey blazer, and a curly wig. I was like, "Who are you?" He told me, "Art Garfunkel." Me: "I thought you were the guy from the Man From UNCLE."
  5:16pm chalmers:

One of Art Garfunkel's post S&G projects was walking across the U.S., but not at once. He'd go for a while, fly home, then fly back to that spot a few months later and continue the process.

I'd wager that no other DJ on the planet has segued Megadeth into Kero Kero Bonito!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm joe:

@James From Westwood I remember me and my metal head friends being infuriated when the evil MTV used that loop. Funny part is it's one of only maybe 3 songs I like/tolerate from Megadeth.

I picked up a bunch of Turkish cds at the mini record fair in Monty Hall. For a dollar each. This is a nice track, djsheilab.

A couple times a week, my friend Garth in college would request "Time of the Season" on the local rock station.

Odessey & Oracle by The Zombies and The Village Green Preservation Society by The Kinks, both from 1968, are 2 of the most underrated albums by British bands

In high school my geometry professor was really into pro wresting and ozzy osbourne. I spent lots of time after school with him working on homework and as a result also became obsessed with Ozzy. I listened to this song over and over and over again for at least a year...thanks for refreshing the memories of freshman year!

...I think Oracle has long been rising slowly but largely in recognition
- & Village Green still waits for broader notice.
(Parts of Oracle were the 1st things done in AbbeyRd.II after Sgt.Pepper - & VillageGreen was released same day as the White Album...)
