Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm doctorjazz:

Ahhh, the sweet sounds of vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm KimSorise:

Man, you're telling me - I just wiped it down and sounds even worse! I know is quite worn, but it has never sounded that "bad"...
Avatar 7:30pm geezerette:

Good evening.Kim and friends!
Beautiful piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 7:33pm geezerette:

Avatar 7:37pm coelacanth:

Greetings Kim and Global Greasers

Happy Kalimbas Day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm doctorjazz:

Been alternating WFMU and WKCR, which plays nothing but Monk for 24 hours on his birthday.
Avatar 7:39pm coelacanth:

(or as geez would say, Happy Spanish [and not just spanish] Occupation Day.)
Avatar 7:41pm geezerette:

Coel! hahaha! :)
Avatar 7:42pm coelacanth:

Monk was my gateway to all the jazz beyond early swing.
Happy Birthday Mr.Monk. you will Live forever.
Avatar 7:47pm geezerette:

God I love this music. Can't remember my gateway drug. Possibly Lester Young through Lady Day but think I was born with it.
Parents dug West Coast, Cal Tjader fans in fact!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm KimSorise:

Jazz has been perhaps my greatest love affair. I do credit dad with handing me Pharoah Sanders & Coltrane Live in Seattle at age 10 or 11... Also as a horn player - I loved Miles Davis endlessly, until I heard Don Cherry.
Avatar 7:56pm coelacanth:

my parents' only jazz was Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, etc...i loved the BG immediately as a child and when i was in jr. high we'd cut school & go to my father's house. all we had was his record collection. 1 beatles'; 1 CCR; ...so we'd smoke herb and i eventually put on the Benny Goodman. lo and behold my friends all dug it!
Avatar 7:58pm coelacanth:

- then my older brother moved into my mother's house for a minute, with his Monk's greatest hits album.
...doors flew open.
Avatar 8:00pm geezerette:

Isn't it incredible how large and infinitely expressive jazz is?
Elegant, brainy and raw. I loved Miles too,and Don Cherry... Pharoah Sanders and Yusef Lateef...on & on.
Avatar 8:02pm geezerette:

Gato Barbieri!!!
Kim you are cookin'.
Avatar 8:06pm Hams:

pharoah's birthday thursday.
Avatar 8:06pm geezerette:

Kim didn't you play Aaron Copeland's Clarinet Concerto with Benny Goodman recently?
Avatar 8:07pm geezerette:

Thanks Kim!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm KimSorise:

No Geezer - I didn't play any Copeland, but I can put that on reserve for another day.
Avatar 8:08pm coelacanth:

so true,g. it does seem infinite.
- i listened to Miles' "agharta"(sp?) a few days ago. it thrills me every time, and it's not even his best. ...1975!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm KimSorise:

Ahhhh, Yes Hams! It is his birthday! Yay!
Avatar 8:10pm Hams:

Avatar 8:11pm geezerette:

Thanks Hams!

  8:30pm Carmichael:

Heya Kim and Greasers. Just finished mowing the lawn. Or cutting the grass, depending on where you're from. Or calling the guy ...
Avatar 8:33pm geezerette:

Kim, never heard of George Russell and this is a great record!
Kind of thing that happens a lot here. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm KimSorise:

Thanks so much! A buddy of mine some time back hipped me to George Russell and I became an instant fan! Glad you enjoy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Monk 2nd only to Trane in Jazz for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

George Russell the Theorist behind Modal Jazz :
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm KimSorise:

This LP was a major shift for me - goose bumps still when I hear this track... Damn Ornette
Avatar 8:45pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ornette wunna the Heaviest...& that Band !
Altho' - being raised in the matrix of Psychedelia (Jimi Hendrix, Floyd. 'I Am the Walrus') - it's hard to see what the big deal was in 1959 w/ it !...
Avatar 8:51pm coelacanth:

(+ Don Cherry, whom i get the impression toppled Miles in your world.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm KimSorise:

I still love Miles - I do, but Don does go one step beyond for me at times. But I have been revisiting Miles lately and so much of it is just stellar!
Avatar 8:54pm geezerette:

@RR:just noticed link, thanks for sharing that!
Avatar 8:54pm coelacanth:

they're both incredible, in very different ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thing about Ornette was - it was always Expressive & Emotive. He certainly had Theory, but it was in service to a Statement - once relates to, always remembered.
Miles was such a Stylist, & so Schooled - it's understandable. But in the end, not interested in standing still. Coltrane bridged the worlds of Discipline & Freedom more completely - but even he got to where he was just beating on his chest because he had no more to play...
Avatar 8:58pm coelacanth:

the thing i like most about Miles is the different textures he plays.
Don is just straight up beautiful.
Avatar 9:00pm coelacanth:

RR, re: Trane...or so he thought. i'd bet if he'd stayed among us he would've found new places to go.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Miles: How come you play so much ??
Trane': I don't know how to stop Miles !
Miles: ...Take the damn horn outcha mouth...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm KimSorise:

It's all about the notes you don't play...
Avatar 9:03pm northguineahills:

It's all about the playing you don't note...
Avatar 9:04pm geezerette:

Beautiful show Kim!

Yes! Takes a long time to learn that too. :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm KimSorise:

Thanks so much, geezer. I'll play a couple more then turn it off for the night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - Thx KimS.
Avatar 9:07pm geezerette:

Rev Rab: good story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Might even be true.
Avatar 9:11pm geezerette:

could hear his voice when I read it. :)
Avatar 9:12pm geezerette:

I like his long,clean lines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:
