A Michel Polnareff song en anglais! You really shouldn't be giving us gifts for your birthday!
  3:13pm modchick65:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Michael 98145:

"When I was 5 years old, my mom always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down *happy*. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment and I told them they didn’t understand life." - John Lennon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm listener james from westwood:

Had no idea he was still recording but very glad he is!
Avatar 3:17pm Cecile:

his voice has changed a lot.
  3:17pm modchick65:

Does anyone else wonder how the conversation went in the Bee Gees rehearsal studio when they were like, "Let's sing like this." I love the Bee Gees, but would just like to know how that went/happened.
Avatar 3:18pm Cecile:

They loved black falsetto singing and black music in the 70s. I think that was the starting point.
Avatar 3:18pm Cecile:

Also, Arif Mardin probably had a lot to do with it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

On the subject of life expectancy, I just now came up with song lyrics "Oh, bury me in the Boom Boom tomb." Suitable for a headstone or in a will, I suppose. Happy birthday song lyrics, not so much.
  3:22pm modchick65:

Wow. This "Strange Boy" track is really nice.
Avatar 3:22pm geezerette:

  3:37pm el BO-bO:

I don't want to be a Debbie downer but Sheila, do you have anything against girl pop from Spain/Latin America? Have you heard Las 4 Monedas or Bebe? Its gr8 that you are "partial to Japan, France, Sweden" but why no expand? I was digging your show until you said that. I hope you give those girls a chance.
Avatar 3:37pm geezerette:

Never heard this version, love Dusty Springfield.
Avatar 3:39pm Cecile:

bo-bo, I've heard her play Latin pop, Israeli pop, Russian pop, Croatian pop
  3:42pm Cooh John:

Pop goes the Boom Boom.
  3:42pm JakeGould:

@elBObO: I think nobody has anything against anything at WFMU but discovery is an organic process. Meaning, hey...
  3:43pm mzmz:

she played Lunachiks and L7 too!

We've got this show on in the background and even through one ear it's THE BEST! I love this Monkees song!!!

Dolenz is a great singer. :D And OMG, these songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Bend Sinister:

Can this be the most record ever?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm listener james from westwood:

'Twas a time, long ago, that you'd have been able to hear most of these cuts on CBS 101.1. Those days are dead. So thank the stars for WFMU!
  3:47pm JakeGould:

Such record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Gaylord Fields:

@Bend Sinister: I believe you left out the word "perfect."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Santos L. Halper:

Thanks for that Monkees track, Sheila, great and new to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Bend Sinister:

too enthusiastic to post.. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Davis:

every version of will you still love me is brilliant. this must be one of the greatest songs ever written. my favourites are the 4 seasons and mo tucker
Avatar 3:50pm Cecile:

someone said something about E-40 when they were writing about his beer (I think they used the words "a motrin dissolved in a damp bar sponge to describe the taste") something like "I don't know if he's the best rapper in SF, but he's the most rapper."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm listener james from westwood:

Mmmm ... Beth Orton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Gaylord Fields:

A few years ago, I was at a get-together, and among the people gathered was Andy Breckman. A group of us were discussing our favorite songs/songwriters/records, and Andy turns to me and says, out of the blue, "Name a perfect song." I replied, "Will You Sill Love Me Tomorrow," and he responded that was exactly the song he was also thinking of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Davis:

i didnt know this was goffin/king, and i've never heard this version- great. rod is my reference for this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Davis:

yes Gaylord. it surely is the best song. never fails
  3:53pm P-90:

@ Shira-chan 誕生日おめでとうございます. Hoping to see you at the festivities tonight!
  3:54pm MONEYBAG$:

When Andy asks that question, the answer should be American Pie
Avatar 3:54pm Cecile:

I'm a weirdo. I think Highway to Hell is a perfect song.
  3:54pm JasonInBoston:

RUSS! Doesn't get much better than that. Wash it down with "I Want to Make You Happy" and you're set for the night. If you REALLY want to tie one on, add "She Don't Deserve You"
Avatar 3:54pm Cecile:

Or Ballroom Blitz.
Avatar 3:55pm Cecile:

play Ballroom Blitz.
  3:56pm JakeGould:

@GaylordFields: Errr... Isn't saying that something is exactly what you were thinking a classic salesman truism? What number am I thinking of?
Avatar 3:56pm geezerette:

Heavenly set. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm listener james from westwood:

Excellent call on your and Andy's part, Gaylord!
  3:58pm Stephin Merritt fan:

Stephin Merritt is pretty darn good
  3:58pm JakeGould:

The Shangri-las "Heaven Only Knows" is a near perfect song.

Avatar 3:59pm geezerette:

Please,please follow with Beatles version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: You've heard the song. If you can't suspend your cynicism in this case, I cannot help you, brother.
  3:59pm JakeGould:

Damn this Marylin Powel is good.
  4:01pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Okay I will agree. But remember this is Andy Breckmsan we're talking about. Will gladly hear a set of all versions of that song.
  4:01pm P-90:

Marylin WAS good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Davis:

there are millions
  4:02pm el BO-bO:

Ok so I found 4 songs in 6 shows. Not bad but not great either. Quebecois music is awesome so that should be good. I'm not attacking anybody Im just pointing out how it sounded to me.
Avatar 4:02pm Cecile:

don't sleep on the Beatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: Don't fall into the trap of confusing Radio Andy with Real World Andy — I was talking to the latter.
  4:03pm JakeGould:

@elBObO: Is there a good app to keep track of stuff like that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Guido from Cologne:

Guitsr bsnds have no future!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Guido from Cologne:

Avatar 4:04pm geezerette:

  4:04pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Okay! I respect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Santos L. Halper:

@JakeG: somebody did a set like that recently, Joe M maybe?
Avatar 4:05pm Cecile:

well, gotta go.
  4:05pm Travis:

Artists seem to get criticized a lot for not changing... challenging themselves and get bad reviews which discourages listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: I certainly earned all the money Andy paid me to be his friend this week.
  4:05pm JakeGould:

@Santos: So an app can work with that?
  4:06pm jerry h.:

HI sheila, love your show. listen every week. saw you in the book '' Dust and Grooves''. love your George Nelson CSS unit. I wanted to let you know of a song that is just wild. odd. By Lambert, Hendricks and Ross entitled "Twisted". To give you an idea of what the song might be remotely connected with, it is from a Rhino boxed set called { I think ) " The Beat Generation''. A 3 disc set with a wonderful booklet. You must hear this song. I love the photo on your dj page. Do you know of the album by Pat Williams titled "Shades of Today"? That photo reminds me of this album cover. I think I may have seen it on DJ COVERLOVER. Great music too.Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm SeanG:

great show Sheila!!
  4:06pm JakeGould:

@Gaylord: Andy pays with money?
  4:07pm P-90:

Où est l'imdignation?!
  4:07pm Travis:

I mean artists are criticized for changing by reviews and that discourages listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm listener james from westwood:

Once again, I salute my Imperator Pumarosa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Adrian in London:

@Gaylord Hi. Got a really great song to send you. Sweeping strings. Emoting. Smoky vocals. Think you'll love it.
  4:10pm JakeGould:

The artist rant was respected. So hey. More persistence.
  4:11pm el BO-bO:

Oh, and if you like Megadeth you'll def like Dover. First 2 albums are excellent. From Spain n sing in English.
  4:15pm JasonInBoston:

I'd like to see the Eighth Day battle it out on the basketball court with the 8th Day from Invictus records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Gaylord Fields:

@Adrian: Your timing is good, as I can share it with everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm Guido from Cologne:

I had a long meeting so will have to listen to the full show on Monday. Returned just in time to find out that you shut down the request to find strippers who can sign. You're awesome. Seriously! I want to live in a world where everyone tries to do better instead of not trying and doing worse.
  4:40pm modchick65:

The receptionist at my old job showed me a picture of the Mary Jane Girls at Rick James' funeral. They sent flowers in the shape of a joint.
  4:40pm el BO-bO:

I love SheilaB, JakeGould and the Mary Juana Girls. Is that good?
  4:41pm JakeGould:

Ranting for better is good.
  4:42pm JasonInBoston:

I'm a HUGE MJG fan! Their first album is one of my favorite LPs of all time. Yes I had this album when I hit puberty but that's beside the point. Every song on that record is fantastic and it proves what a genius Rick James was. JoJo was the one that could hold it down vocally-but yeah-I get it with the gimmick. Listen to "On the Inside". Excellent. MJG reminds me of the good old days of teen dances and the roller rink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm Michael 98145:

( who said we didn't need perverted-sex records every week ...? ")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm chris:

"Why is it considered as bad luck in Germany to wish for someone's Birthday in advance?" Look it up. Explanation too long.
  4:44pm JakeGould:

Sheila, a Pooh song? What a dork! A compliment!
  4:46pm JakeGould:

Oh, Alice in Wonderland. My bad! This is good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm Carmichael:

I believe I had this Alice soundtrack also as a kid. Mine had Scatman Crothers doing the Cheshire Cat.
  4:47pm modchick65:

Carmichael, I think I had that album, too!
  4:48pm modchick65:

The single of the week kind of reminds me of Curve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm listener james from westwood:

I had a bunch of the Disney soundtracks coming up, this included. I believe I saw Alice in Wonderland in the theaters when I was teeny, during the re-releases in the early 70s. Mostly I remember colors. No doubt some veteran acidheads also seeing it at that time could say the same.
  4:50pm Mark R:

This Cuesta Loeb track is very cool. Feels more like a deep album track than a single (that's a compliment!).

7: Don't Be Early
When you run into a friend who has a birthday coming up, it's only natural to wish that person a happy birthday in advance. In some parts of the world, however, your seemingly innocent wish is supposed to bring bad luck down on the birthday boy or girl. In Russia, for example, you should never celebrate a birthday until the actual day of the event. If you can't do it that day, wait until afterward to avoid bad luck. In Germany, even wishing someone a happy birthday before the day of the event is bad luck. Just to be safe, some superstitious folks in that country don't give children any gifts until the day after their birthday.

The Sapphires were from Philly, but "rediscovered" by the Northern Soul trend. That was written by Pam Sawyer and Lori Burton. The players included Gamble and Huff, Ashford and Simpson, and Melba Moore.

adam sandler?? no thank you.
Swag For Life Member 5:08pm nightjeans:

these questions are great Sheila
  5:09pm mzmz:

omg. good bye!
  5:10pm el BO-bO:

I don't think I like this dude. Sorry. I absolutely hate Hakuna Matata.
  5:10pm JakeGould:

DJ Dorks!!! Awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm Ken From Hyde Park:

DJ Parka Pat brings the sophistication!
  5:18pm el BO-bO:

I know one thing DJs are afraid of: an empty dance floor.
  5:19pm JasonInBoston:

@Carmichael-Lori Burton also put the song out as Baby You Got Me, which came out on her LP as well as by Prince Harold on Mercury. There's an unreleased Sapphires version as well to the same "Slow Fizz" backing track.
  5:20pm mandy:

Rex would love this guy
  5:21pm Mark R:

Well, I'm a pushover for foreign-language versions of well-known songs, so I'm digging the shit out of this.
  5:21pm jerry h.:

My personal favorite 4 minute non-pop instrumental: "Overture to 'Candide'" by Leonard Bernstein-seriously. Give a listen. Not that anyone asked. Diggin' Parka Pat, also. Love instrumentals. I think that they are harder to write than songs with lyrics. Did you know that there are lyrics to " Peter Gunn"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Carmichael:

@Jason: Wow, did not know that. Thanks for the info, just one more thing to find!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm common:

  5:23pm JtotheK:

Sapphires 'evil one' on ABC is pretty good, too. And there are Sapphires 45s on Swan (I Found Out Too Late b/w I Got Mine) but I'm not sure if same group/lineup.
  5:23pm el BO-bO:

The Door's "Baby, Come on light my fire" in French??? Ma No. No. No. No.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Carmichael:

Canadian Hush?!!
Avatar 5:26pm geezerette:

Loving this set! Such sedate psychedelica!
Avatar 5:27pm djsheilab:

@el BO-bO So nice to see you enjoying yourself so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Carmichael:

My next band will be called Sedate Psychedelica.
Avatar 5:28pm geezerette:

Ha ha! I see T.V. choreography!
Avatar 5:31pm geezerette:

It's all so cute in French!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Hughie Considine:

Considering this guy's preference for the execrable "Hakuna Matata," can Don Ho's "Shock the Monkey" be far behind?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm listener james from westwood:

Already liking this "Under My Thumb" just from that opening!
Avatar 5:34pm geezerette:

Want to sing along but I don't speak French!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Carmichael:

So if I grew up in Montreal instead of the lower 48, this would be my life soundtrack, instead of Les Monkees?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Michael 98145:

"You belong to me"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Adrian in London:

Quick hello to say loving the show. Mercy Parka Pat et Shéila Bée
  5:36pm Mark R:

Cesar and the Romans? Seriously?
  5:36pm el BO-bO:

Yes Sheila. This doesn't do it for me. This music is dated in its original form. Imagine in another language. I've heard my share of Spanish covers of The Beatles, Eagles, The Mamas and the Papas, and I just got tired of it; just like Im tired of this show. Au Revoir Bichos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Adrian in London:

"Merci" FFS
Avatar 5:36pm geezerette:

Love The Flying Lizards version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Carmichael:

@Carmichael Seriously. His comments are very mean.
Swag For Life Member 5:38pm nightjeans:

Whoa I have Ceasar and the Romans record! It contains a french version of Splish Splash
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 5:39pm geezerette:

Ye Ye!!! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm listener james from westwood:

Hey, el BO-bO, if you don't like it, fuck straight off like you should've done 2 hours ago. Nobody here comes to your house and shits on the things you love.
  5:40pm Mandy:

This continuous, commercial- free stream of rare and eclectic music spun by passionate DJs can really wear on some people sometimes...... ;-P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The guy needs more fiber in his diet, that is certain.
  5:42pm JasonInBoston:

James from Westwood - Thanks for calling out a troll that doesn't need to be here. I can't stand negativity. Who needs it? I was trying to post more comments to make the bad ones go away. These lame ass keyboard commando cunts need something better to do.
  5:42pm jerry h.:

let"s stay positive in this groovy set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Michael 98145:

^ what they said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm SeanG:

right on, it IS a groovy set!
  5:46pm mike s.:

If I'm not mistaken I believe the DJs have the option of banning trolls like this from the board and deleting their comments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm maestroso:

Hah, finally got home! Great set DJSheilaB and DJ Parka Pat!
Pay no attention to the nastiness upstream. That commenter has been trolling other DJ's message boards as well (should be banned, imho).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm listener james from westwood:

Hear hear, jerry h! Wish we had another hour, no offense to the Weirdo duo! This is like an awesome Quebecois Singles Going Steady show! Maybe he can return in October....
JasonInBoston: Happy to help!
  5:48pm jerry h.:

fun stuff!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Michael 98145:

gawd knows some of us have never had the opportunity to hear these discs before now
Avatar 5:49pm geezerette:

FUN FUN FUN! Thanks Sheila B. and happy party people!
Avatar 5:49pm djsheilab:

@mike s. I need to learn how to ban trolls. Will learn for next time.
Avatar 5:49pm djsheilab:

So glad you're all digging Parka Pat's Quebecoise/ Canadian sets!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Michael 98145:

heh, Grits Time
  5:51pm jerry h.:

It's like there's a party in my computer and everyone's invited!!
  5:51pm el BO-bO:

maestroso: im giving constructive criticism, thats all. I've been banned n I dont want to be again but I cant help point things out to ppl when they say what they say. This is after all a "comments" board not a "friends with only positive things to say" board. If Sheila wants me to stop, Ill stop.
Avatar 5:52pm spidermank:

cheers Sheila B , boom boomed me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks for having Parka Pat today, Sheila. Are there any web sites we should know about to find out more? Any local gigs, as well?
  5:52pm Mark R:

Grits don't deserve a song this good.
  5:53pm Mark R:

I thought you left already.
  5:53pm JtotheK:

Really great set, enjoyed the show today! Thanks SheilaB and Parka Pat.
  5:53pm Mark R:

That wasn't Billy Martin the hotheaded manager that Steinbrenner fired 4 times was it?
Avatar 5:54pm djsheilab:

@Ken From Hyde Park You can find out more about Parka Pat here: parkaavenue.blogspot.com So happy you're liking it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm maestroso:

@el BO-bO: I think she's made that clear. That is all.
  5:55pm JtotheK:

Re: mod culture -- I'm currently reading a book Mods: The New Religion by Paul Smiler Anderson. Has a lot of record info about what was spun on the scene back then.
  5:56pm Mark R:

I've got a file of unpublished mean comments. They're for my eyes only.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm listener james from westwood:

Mark R: Was it only 4 times? Seemed like it was every season!
  5:56pm JtotheK:

If Parka has any other book suggestions, please let me know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Carmichael:

The Soul Distributors! If they wore hats, would they be "distributor caps"?

Black Joe Lewis, not to be confused with Louis Black.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks mightily, Sheila and Parka Pat!
  5:58pm Mark R:

Actually I think it was only 3. I remember on Seinfeld when Steinbrenner was running down his list of managers, and he kept saying "Billy Martin."
