Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. I was about to write are we going to hear some Dean Moriarty then realised wrong Dean, wrong Sherlock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Brian in UK:

My favourite Wenders is Kings of the Road. Great start to a film when he drives the car into the Rhine.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am melinda:

Although every time I see the movie it seems much longer than i remembered
  9:27am mauri:

good afternoon folks.
Avatar 9:28am Joe McG:

Hey fred--At least we remembered to take the sneakers out of the box before sending it! @mauri: Good afternoon to you, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Brian in UK:

Hello mauri, we are getting five seasons in one day here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am annie:

not that there's anything wrong with it, there's a melancholy to the show so far. bittersweet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Brian in UK:

Joe, ever heard California 99 by Jimmie Haskell, strange old article, big foldout cover with a spoken story and kindof soundtrack.
  9:36am mauri:

Brianinuk here it suddenly plummeted to 11C. It's raining all day too.
these songs makes me think of driving up north in autumn cold. love this kind of romantism.
Avatar 9:37am Joe McG:

@Brian: No, Brian, but your description makes me want to discover it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am fred:

@Joe: good thing you did, these would have been too small for me. And I only wear cowboy boots anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Brian in UK:

mauri, know what you mean. Are you getting smells of Autumn yet, bit early maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am sphere:

hey there. was this guy in Chicago the band?
Avatar 9:39am Joe McG:

@sphere: Yeah, that's the fella.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am melinda:

I smell a bit of autumn melancholy, too, and I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am sphere:

I was a teenage Chicago fan, so this voice evokes a lot of memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Guido from Cologne:

Jimmi Haskell:
is also famous as an arranger for classics like "bridge over Troubled water" and "ode to Billie Joe". And Rex's farewell-tune is Haskell's "Rockin' The Orbit" from 1958 LP "Count Down".

I find certain arranger personalities interesting and they're much too often in the shadow of producer's personalities.
  9:44am mauri:

no autumn tints nor smells yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Nardo:

In regards to Electra Glide in Blue: "The soundtrack album also included a four-page fold-out poster of Robert Blake standing beside his cycle on a bluff overlooking Monument Valley." Oooh boy!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Brian in UK:

Robert Blake has one of those red/green air fresheners on his Harley. Bonkers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Brian in UK:

@Guido bit like Bill Szymczyk, had to cut and paste that!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am sphere:

Chicago's Terry Kath was also a very good guitarist who had avant tendencies. See "Free Form Guitar," which takes up one side of their debut 2LP set. Sharrock and Hendrix would have been pleased.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am annie:

i loved Ulee's Gold
  9:51am KP:

You ruined it!
Avatar 9:52am βrian:

Avatar 9:55am Joe McG:

@tadpoles: Yes! Thanks for the chicken guidance!
Avatar 9:57am βrian:

"Yace, that's right."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am pantz:

Morning, folks. Thanks for reminding me of Paris, Texas, Joe. I really need to see that movie again. It was all about mood and you could really feel the lonesomeness of the two main characters which was also reflected in the wide angle shots of the dusty old town.
Avatar 10:01am βrian:

@pantz: My GF showed me that film and told me *nothing* about it beforehand. (As it should be.) I was floored.
Avatar 10:01am Joe McG:

@pantz: My pleasure! Yes, it's always worth rewatching.
Avatar 10:03am βrian:

To this day, I drop the h when I say "hunter."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am pantz:

It was a perfect role for Stanton. A brilliant and versatile actor, but his hang dog look was perfect for such a weary soul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am annie:

i watched a short bio-pic of mr stanton, it was quite enlightening. he's a humble fellow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Brian in UK:

So which walk do you prefer HDS in Paris or Vincent Gallo's mincing in Buffalo 66?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am annie:

i have a hard time watching vincent gallo. something doesn't ring true.. i DO, howver, give his acting some views just to be sure i'm not too biased. ...mmm. not yet, bobbie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Ken From Hyde Park:

I watched The Naked Gun: 33-1/3 over the weekend. I read that the original subtitle was to be "For the Record," but the producers figured too few people would get the joke so they gave it "The Final Insult" instead.
  10:10am Polyus:

Belated thumbs up for Electra Glide. Me and Alan Ladd are not the same height.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Tim 07030:

Good morning, Joe! Here's a story (get it?): I played softball once with Ian Lloyd and he told me he knew he had arrived when, while he was listening, WABC did an 'Instaaant Replay!" of "Brother Louie".

I feel out of breath just listening to Little Richard

Avatar 10:44am Joe McG:

@Jeff and Steve: You guys have to look up those lyrics! "Flush the evil..."
  10:47am Polyus:

Last week I was in Detroit and hit Peoples Records - so many boxes of 7", I got dizzy just looking at them. Anyone else been there?
Avatar 10:49am Joe McG:

@Polyus: Never been to Detroit, but that kind of panic sounds like my kind.
  10:49am melinda:

I always liked this Michael Jackson number even though I'd mostly lost interest in him at that point.
Avatar 10:52am Joe McG:

Wow, if you ever need a starker representation of 80s production vs. 70s production....
  10:53am Nate in Detroit:

@polyus - I just moved in a few blocks from Peoples Records. The collection there is almost overwhelming. I've left there empty handed more than once just because I can't decide what to pick up and what to pass.
Avatar 10:53am Sem Chumbo:

Look at me, I can't disco worth a damn!
Sorry, 70s flashback.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am sphere:

my young me would be astonished that the old me likes disco.
Avatar 10:56am Joe McG:

@Guido: He sure knew how to get a good bass sound!
Avatar 10:57am Jeff:

Why did the horrifying disco dancing lessons my parents sent me to as another failed attempt to socialize me only teach The Hustle? How often was a Hustlable song ever played out there in the world?
Avatar 10:58am Jeff:

@sphere: Right? I was so sneery about the disco when I was a sneery young thing. It seemed trivial and tacky.

Which it still is, but now I'm prepared to celebrate that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am pantz:

@Jeff I grew up near Cincy during the Big Red Machine years, so I learned the Charlie Hustle. Not quite as fun, but I never lost a bet.
Avatar 10:59am V Priceless:

  10:59am melinda:

I love Fly Robin Fly, but it always has a dark vibe to it because I think I heard it in the TV movie Diary of a Teenage Hitchhiker, which was a cautionary tale about the perils of hitchhiking. Does anyone remember that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Andrew Waterloo:

there is a reason why they call a parents involvement in a child's social development "interference"
Avatar 10:59am βrian:

@Jeff: Don't you miss the shimmery polyester shirts?
  10:59am Polyus:

@Nate - yeah, I was just killing some time, so I only grabbed a few LPs. Definitely want to hit it again when I have more time. I actually ended up there because it was close to the Heidelberg Project, which I was checking out.
Avatar 10:59am Joe McG:

@melinda: Wow, melinda, how interesting!
Avatar 11:02am Jeff:

@βrian: I don't, because I know a number of people who have chosen treasured vintage plastic-fabric shirts in oh those colors as their preferred personal style.
Avatar 11:05am Jeff:

And "Blood and Sand" is a cocktail which sounds gross (the name, the combination of ingredients, and how it looks) but is actually pretty tasty.
  11:08am melinda:

I prefer the 70s sound too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Michele:

Hey there
  11:13am SeanG:

Joe, who was that singer that robert plant totally lifted from for "whole lotta love"? i remember you played it before
Avatar 11:15am Sem Chumbo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Brian in UK:

Joe, it is the sound/ambience as well as the meaning that makes these songs so poignant. Clean and modern does not always cut it.
Avatar 11:17am Joe McG:

Hey, Michele! @SeanG: I can't remember!
Avatar 11:18am βrian:

Mr. Crosby passed in 1977. I didn't realize it was so long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Tim 07030:

I believe this is the last song Sinatra ever recorded for Capitol.
Avatar 11:20am Joe McG:

@Tim: Wow, I didn't know that. I may play Frank, not sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am annie:

sure, play frankie
Avatar 11:22am Joe McG:

OK, Annie, I will.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am annie:

anyone remember back in the 70(?) a singing sensation of john mccormick? he had some weepy songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Tim 07030:

Yeah, his last sessions for Capitol overlapped with his first sessions for Reprise, he had to fulfill his Capitol contract, and I seem to recall reading in the Capitol box set that "I Got A Right..." was the last thing he recorded. He doesn't exactly give it his all.
  11:25am SeanG:

it was Steve Marriott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am fred:

I love these 30's records. Gene Austin sounds much more recent that the previous songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am ChrisB.:

Avatar 11:35am Joe McG:

@Jeff: "Blue Prelude" is kind of the earlier version of "Good-bye," both written by Gordon Jenkins. What a song, in any version.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am MD:

My Dad, as a young Man, had seen Billie live enough that he got to know her and would say hello.
He even would buy her a drink now and then. To transfer all his old 78's was at times quite moving...I MEAN THESE WERE MY POP'S RECORDS! WE ALL KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS AND FEELS LIKE!!!!

@MD: True. And so amazing that he had a saying-hello-and-sometimes-drink-buying relationship with Billie Holiday!

Apologies for the audio-nerdery, but please tell me that if you're taking the trouble to record all those records, you're recording in some lossless format (FLAC or WAV or AIFF or ALAC or the like)! The worst case would be MP3, which has terrible trouble with sharp impulses (like, you know, surface noise on records).

Wondrous 3 hours, would not have wanted to spend them any other way. See you, and Clan McGasko, later on down the line,.

Aw, thanks, Sem. And thanks everyone for listening and commenting today. Even though next Monday is a (U.S.) holiday, I will be here to keep you company if any of you are awake on your day off! Have a great last week of August!

Joe, it's pronounced Tony KOS-ZIN-ECK
  6:02pm Joe McG:

Thanks, Mark. I had no bloody idea how to say his name.
  5:31pm Mark in Toronto:

While he was born in England, he is/was Canadian and lived in Toronto. He had local airplay (probably a Can Con thing) in the '70s and had a hit with "All Things Come From God"
