Options August 24, 2016: The 8th Annual Evan "Funk" Davies Disco and/or Dance Party Show!

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

Summertime always reminds me of listening to Ken "Spider" Webb and Ricky Ricardo and, of course the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on WBLS. So when summer rolls around I start itching to play my favorite records from that era (give or take a few years) -- favorites I loved back then, and new favorites that I never heard back in the day.
In that spirit, I'm excited to bring you the 8th annual Evan "Funk" Davies Disco and/or Dance Party! It's three hours of classic dance and disco jams from the '70s and early '80s, plus some lost shoulda-been-hits that just might become your new faves. Hook up the disco ball, pull the rug back, and tell the downstairs neighbors to go out to the movies (or just invite them up!) and get ready to get up and boogie. That's right!

Disco/dance disclaimer! I'm keeping the lines blurry and using "disco" and "dance" as catch-all terms for my own take on fun dance music from the mid-70s to the early '80s, expanding the boundaries (and sound) of the traditional disco era. No griping, please!

If I knew this was going to be a disco party, I would have eaten those two slices of pizza I just ate on top of one another.

Ready to boogie.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I knew it was no coincidence that the gym played "Fly Robin Fly" this morning.
  9:13pm Weems:

What the Funk? Too early for 80s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm efd:

oh boy, here we go! :) hi Weems, always a pleasure to have you here for these shows!
Avatar 9:14pm geezerette:

Ken, why is everyone wearing tiny little spoons around their necks?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm efd:

... and that goes for all the rest of you too, of course!
  9:25pm Not enough data!:

Murder and music!
  9:29pm Weems:

That was LATE 1980 LOL!
Lovin it!!!!
Keep those BPM's up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@geezerette - Hmm...dessert cart?
Avatar 9:34pm Loretta:

Evan, you know how to play disco!!! most of us probably were not fans back in the day but you make it all good....... my #1 dee jay 4 sure!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The TV commercial with the Village People just played again. Confound it, though, I still have no idea what they were selling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm melinda:

They've brought back the Village People? Do they look aged?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm efd:

@Loretta, I wasn't a fan back in the day either!
Avatar 9:37pm geezerette:

Hey I can't figure out who I'm dancing with! Oh, it's the whole room!!!

@Ken, don't see dessert but everyone is sniffing coffee creamer. Oh well! :)
  9:38pm Kat:

You are the #1 DJ.
Avatar 9:42pm Loretta:

OK ~ now we're back to Studio 54!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I'd say the sailor seems a little old, but the other guys look pretty good. youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm efd:

Just picked this Solar Flare 12" up in Seattle a few weeks ago, and I'm thinking it might become a staple of the Disco/Dance Party shows!
  9:46pm JakeGould:

“Boogie Fund” sounds more fun than the “Boogie 401K.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm melinda:

Has anyone seen the documentary The Secret Disco Revolution? There is a part where the Village People are interviewed and they all steadfastly deny that there was anything gay about the group and their music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm melinda:

I like this boogie fund.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm efd:

the feeling is mutual!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm efd:

get it?
  9:49pm JakeGould:

We get it… Don’t pump and dump the boogie fund too hard.
  9:49pm Weems:

Boogie Fund arranged by the legendary
Ron Have Mercy Kersey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I, for one, am bullish on Boogie Fund.
  9:57pm Ziggy:

Evan, once upon a time I worked as a cashier at a certain QuickChek, meeting you that day changed my life, now I'm spinning around the room to the funk with a bunch of friends! Bless your funky soul!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm chris_in_space:

Hey all. Good to be here, as usual, especially tonight. Blue Jays are down 8-0 in the 8th anyway, so no distraction there.
  9:58pm Jack Splat:

Yes, I'd rate Boogie Fund a "Definite Buy."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm efd:

Hey Ziggy, no way! I remember that night - no one at the Quick Chek has commented on any of my WFMU shirts ever since!
  9:58pm Dave in SoDak:

Have "Last Days of Disco" on the teevee w/ vol down. Soundtrack is EFD, muthas...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm chris_in_space:

Ahh, the WFMU shirt as social barometer. Experienced a few encounters with strangers and FMU shirts over the years as well.
  10:05pm Stevel:

Wow! to the bass solo!
  10:06pm Stevel:

Double wow, to the Ziggy/efd reunion.
  10:07pm Weems:

Southroad Connection. KTU Sweet spot.
Real disco. So good! Oh to be 16 again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm efd:

i played this one for you, Weems! I know it's a fave.
  10:11pm Dave in SoDak:

Memory from age 15. My cousin asked me why I loved Chic - said it was disco junk. I replied, "You love Grand Funk Railroad. Shut up and get the funk out."
  10:14pm famous original italianicewolf:

@melinda: was that on Netflix? Because that I saw, and yes, LOLZ at the Village People
  10:15pm Stevel:

Remember when people said roller disco wouldn't last?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm melinda:

@icewolf: I saw it at a local screening but I'm sure it's the same thing. I was shocked and wondered if it was a joke, especially since there is an element of satire throughout the film. But maybe they really were just ignorant pawns in the larger scheme of things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm efd:

@melinda, is that a new/recent movie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm melinda:

I love disco flute.
  10:29pm famous original italianicewolf:

@melinda: I've seen claims elsewhere that only one member (no pun intended) was gay and no one had any idea, and dudes!!! I've seen Can't Stop the Music, COME ON
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm melinda:

@efd: it came out in 2012 or 2013.
  10:30pm sam p.:

@efd "secret disco revolution" is really good. there's an interview with KC that kind of turns at the end. you should def watch it. i think i saw it on VUDU.
  10:31pm Dave in SoDak:

"This is Rollergirl. You like her?" - Burt Reynolds "Yeah, she's a fox." - Mark Wahlberg "Fox." How did that term ever come about? First movie that made me respect Wahlberg as an actor btw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm efd:

thanks melinda and sam, will look out for both
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm melinda:

I wonder if straight people were less savvy about these things back then. I was a kid then so I had no clue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm melinda:

@Dave: me too. Such a great movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm efd:

personally I was absolutely aware at the time that the Village People were gay, or in light of those doc comments at least being marketed that way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Uncle Michael:

I'm not going to stop dancing, but out of respect to my neighbors, I will close my blinds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm melinda:

Come on UM, fly the disco freak flag!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Rollergirl totally kicked the crap out that one guy at the end of the movie.
  10:38pm Dave in SoDak:

Yeah, Heather Graham put in a helluva performance in that flick too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Uncle Michael:

I'm pretty sure she killed that guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Uncle Michael:

This is the best disco track ever. I hope this is the long version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm melinda:

It was a disturbing scene. Roller boogie took a dark turn there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm efd:

single version, sorry Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Uncle Michael:

Any Boney M in store?
Avatar 10:43pm Danne D:

Hi EFD :)
Hi Funk Fans :)
Evan "Boogie" Davies in the house :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm efd:

probably no Boney M, thought it's funny you ask since I also think of them when I think of CJ & Co
10:43pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Just joining, and I'm glad I haven't missed the Crown Heights Affair yet
  10:44pm Dave in SoDak:

Songs related to this genre that I will never get sick of, ever: Chic - Le Freak and/or Good Times, and Santa Esmerelda - Disco Inferno (12" xtd version). Got my first kiss during that song.
  10:44pm Dave in SoDak:

Sorry, pretty pedestrian, but hey...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm efd:

probably no Sylvester tonight since I played him pretty recently. And sorry, Michael ftLC but no CHA either. :(
  10:52pm Dave in SoDak:

Wasn't Boney M German? Or am I imagining things...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm Mr. Pumpy:

You're lighting my world on fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Mr. Pumpy:

Are these all on vinyl? Either way...they are fucking killing me. I just ate the last of the shrooms...and me likey.
  10:56pm Weems:

Jimmy Bo Horn. That means you're playing that Dorothy Moore track next!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm efd:

yep, all vinyl Mr. Pumpy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm efd:

HAHA! Good guess, Weems - but wrong! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Mr. Pumpy:

Hell yes! Sounds killer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm efd:

she's coming though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

You're right, Dave. It was known as West Germany back then. I was going to spout out that they were Dutch, but luckily, I checked the internet for references and it says they're from Bonn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Mr. Pumpy:

No joke...having a little shroomcation...and it's all good. I'm a big time vinyl guy as well...so even better. Thanks man.
  11:00pm Dave in SoDak:

@Ken I thought so. My sis spent a year at the Goethe Institute and brought an album back. Thought, "so exotic! deutsches disco!"
  11:07pm Weems:

D Train. Uh oh here comes the WNYU Tiffany mix! Then get some Teena Marie on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Tome:

...toot toot ! .. beep beep yea .... !!!
  11:11pm Dave in SoDak:

woop woop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm efd:

Next one is new to the efd disco/dance party, and I dare say it's an effing BURNER.

New to WFMU as well as far as I can tell.
  11:22pm Weems:

Always a blast Funk, but I'm hopping on the Z train. Will catch the last sweep on demand! Bravo!!!
Avatar 11:22pm Danne D:

Great show Evan :)
I haven't been commenting much but this has made it easier getting through the random computer crap I've been up to. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm efd:

my pleasure Danne, thanks for listening!

  11:36pm JakeGould:

Just be good to me. Why not?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm Tome:

I've gotten to like a lot of these songs even back then ,, ( although I would not admit it to most at that time ) but that midnight rhythm was smokin' indeed ! ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm efd:

Glad you liked it too, Tome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm efd:
