Hey All! VOIVODDDDDDD!! @Polyus, no, haven't heard the new BP yet, and we do not have it. At 1 I am playing Part 1 - Pioneers of Punk... this is original interviews from the research for the Please Kill Me Book, with narrating and comments by Michael Des Barres, and authors Gillian McCain and Legs McNeil. A great book if you haven't read it (duh). AND I'm very psyched for Carcass tonight in NYC :) Hope you are all having a great week!

Avatar 1:06pm Cecile:

Lou answered his own question - rock gave those topics an immediacy.
Avatar 1:09pm Cecile:

was this made for Little Steven's Sirius Radio channel? I know Michael Des Barres has a show over there.
Avatar 1:18pm Diane Kamikaze:

I don't think so, Cecile. It seems to have been put together with a larger context.
  1:20pm Polyus:

Can you believe there was actually a time when bands like the Stooges, MC5, Mothers, etc were actually signed by major labels?
Avatar 1:21pm Cecile:

Maybe something for NPR>

Poly, and Captain Beefheart and King Crimson, and Patti Smith, and Tim Buckley.

I believe it, but only because I was there for part of it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Alejandroool:

music biz was still able to capitalize off the apparent dangerous/rebellious subcultures. Nowadays barely anything in music, seems to be dangerous enough to even bother capitalizing on

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm common:

this is pretty great diane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Michael 98145:

what common said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Michael 98145:

( i still think FMU should be a Sirius/XM channel )
  1:42pm el BO-Bo:

Why is this being transmitted on FMU? Its wonderful but at this point in history this is all commercial BS. Propagating this story to the masses cheapens it, in my opinion. It's making me sad, nostalgic. I miss those days.
  1:45pm el BO-Bo:

If FMU becomes a Sirius/XFM station, I'll never listen to it ever again. Just sayin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Michael 98145:

i understand that
Avatar 1:50pm Cecile:

el Bo-bo, just because it comes from a different, slicker source doesn't mean than it's bad. Doug Schulkind excavated a great, long-forgotten NPR jazz series on John Coltrane and it was wonderful.
Avatar 1:50pm Cecile:

Also, there are people who don't know the history. More than you think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm common:

true, cecile.
  1:51pm Dean:

By the time I saw Johansen with Syl Sylvain and, I think, Jerry Nolan, in OC c.1979, they did not make it look easy. They were working hard.
Avatar 1:52pm Cecile:

but I understand about seeing your past become popular. People parrot stuff about the 80s that is just wrong. Like how it was all fun...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I had a rental car one time with Sirius/XM. A display in the gauges said "Garage" and I couldn't figure out why it was telling me to put the vehicle into some garage. I eventually figured out that the display was the XM info and I was tuned to Little Steven's Underground Garage channel. ¯\(°_o)/¯
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Alejandroool:

The stories are always good, but yes El BO-bo, the presentation/packaging of these types of docs always cheapens things. However if it inspires any younger generation people to play music/do anything then all the better. I'm an early 80's baby and didn't discover this stuff until late teens. If I had seen/heard any docs like this when I was even younger than that, it woulda been great. Still not a fan of the packaging of these things every time I see a similar doc.
Avatar 1:54pm Cecile:

I've listened to it in the car. They play some good stuff. I'm not going to chase it down, but its a lot better than Clear Channel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm melinda:

Cecile do you know the Vaselines' 'I Hate the 80s'? Your comment reminded me of it.
Avatar 1:57pm slugluv1313:

amazing stuff, Diane (but ooooo do i feel old, haha!) THANK YOU!!!
Avatar 1:59pm cee:

hey i enjoyed that. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Michael 98145:

a simpler time. despite St Reagan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm chris:

FMU on sirius would give me a reason to subscribe to sirius... and i agree with Cecile on this one, el BO-Bo... docs have their place. done well, they're like reliving the past.

Thanks, Diane! love the PKM segment!
Avatar 2:01pm Cecile:

I don't Melinda. I should listen to them again.
Avatar 2:02pm Cecile:

actually, Michael, most of this punk stuff happened during Nixon/Ford/Carter's administration.
Avatar 2:02pm Cecile:

Hardcore = Reagan
Avatar 2:03pm slugluv1313:

Cecile, you are so right -- so much misinformation out there -- like i have had to explain to more than one young-un that having green hair (for example) would have gotten you thrown outta high school, & if you were older, beaten up, ridiculed, etc. . . . and bands like The Ramones (and The Clash and even The Pretenders) were most definitely NOT considered "classic rock"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Michael 98145:

yup, guess so. long time ago.
  2:04pm el BO-Bo:

Ok. Agree to disagree. Like Cecile says, it wasn't the same way its presented in the docs. Same with the freakin 80's. It makes me feel old and sad that those times are forever gone. Oh well.
  2:04pm Dean:

Ford administration, right. One of my one-night-stand bands (Sweet Puddin'heads) did a tune about Nelson Rockefeller, then VP.
Avatar 2:04pm slugluv1313:

yup, first heard about the New York Dolls around 1972 -- Nixon days
Avatar 2:04pm Cecile:

I had a friend who went to LA in the late 80s, and came back to Houghton, MI with pink hair. A whole school bus full of kids stopped to gawk and mock her.
Avatar 2:05pm cee:

spitfires rip!
Avatar 2:05pm Cecile:

el Bo-bo, they're gone in some ways, but when I get with old friends, I feel the spirit again..
Avatar 2:05pm V Priceless:

better to feel old than to be dust, I say...
Avatar 2:06pm Cecile:

exactly. I get up in the morning to hopefully learn one new thing every day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Michael 98145:

@Cecile, a good reason to listen to FMU
Avatar 2:07pm Cecile:

speaking of that, diane do you know about The Grindmother?

Exactly Michael.
Avatar 2:07pm Cecile:

The band is a 67 year old mom, her son and his friends. She's a pretty credible singer!
Avatar 2:08pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Michael 98145:

anger doesn't diminish with age
Avatar 2:09pm Cecile:

Someone said that she has more anger than anyone - she actually gave birth! hahaha
Avatar 2:11pm slugluv1313:

@ Cecile -- my ex & i were walking through the town in Union County, NJ where he still lived with his parents, about 1978, i think -- a van pulled up near us (complete with freakin' Confederate flag draped in back window! pretty sure they were blasting some sort of "Southern Rock" too) & started yelling crap at us -- so we both started towards the van, which instantly sped away -- we later found out from my ex's younger brother that they were afraid of us, thought we were going to kill them (!) b/c we were these *evil* "punk rockers" (weird thing was, we were not even looking/dressed that "out there" that day)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Michael 98145:

now kids on the street look like biker gangs from hell
Avatar 2:14pm Jim Devoid:

Avatar 2:15pm Cecile:

what jim said
  2:16pm el BO-Bo:

Oh, BTW, I hate NPR: They supported the war in Iraq and misled all of us with BS information. Anything coming out of NPR smells.
Avatar 2:17pm slugluv1313:

yes what Jim siad!
GRINDMOTHER is freakin' AWESOME!!!!!!!
Avatar 2:17pm Chris from DC:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm chris:

el Bo-BO, I don't much like them, but this was an excellent series.
Avatar 2:18pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

You get exactly one chance to be the Grindmother. Very glad that worked out so well for all involved.
Avatar 2:18pm Chris from DC:

Avatar 2:18pm Jim Devoid:

My local library actually had Amon Amarth in their new bin! Glad I borrowed it!
Avatar 2:19pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:20pm Diane Kamikaze:

Nice library, Jim! I remember years ago my local library had the first Ramones lp when it came out... I don't think I've been inside a library in 2016, yikes!
Avatar 2:20pm Cecile:

This video is awesome for several reasons. The mysterious sky Doritos, sand, and the fact it's filmed on an island by the winner of the Ingmar Bergman prize.
Avatar 2:22pm Cecile:

I got the term sky Doritos from a god of a YouTube commenter.
Avatar 2:23pm Jim Devoid:

Library executive director is a friend who used to play in a local hardcore band, think he "loosened up" their purchases! Also snagged the new Bob Mould disc at the same time.
  2:24pm Polyus:

I get tons of stuff from the local library system, including finding stuff I hear on this show.
Avatar 2:24pm Cecile:

there's a couple of ex-punk rockers at the Mpls Library - I should go there more.

Ha! Poly, you're going to my library system
  2:26pm Polyus:

Definitely a nice way to figure out if you want to buy something. Also indispensable for road trips, when you are tired of all the jams you have.
Avatar 2:29pm Chris from DC:

Avatar 2:29pm slugluv1313:

FASCINATING! how many of us "old punks" end up working at libraries . . . and/or doing cat/dog/etc. rescue, animal rights stuff, etc. . . . !
and yes, tons of great stuff through my local library system too :)
Avatar 2:31pm Cecile:

It made me smile and laugh to know that the Primitive Calculators, one of the more nihilistic Oz punk bands ever are teaching college and curating libraries.
  2:31pm el BO-Bo:

These songs rawk hard. Excellence!
Avatar 2:32pm Cecile:

Avatar 2:35pm Chris from DC:

re: Mark Volman on Michael Shelley's show - I heard him interview Howard Kaylan a few years ago, and it was really entertaining. Not a big fan of the music they have done, but he had a lot of good show biz stories. Volman will probably be the same.
