Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Carmichael:

Hey Cecile! I told PJ to be on the lookout for Sheila, but I wasn't sure how I could describe her. Sheila, I was hoping your personality would cause you to be recognized ...
Avatar 3:07pm djsheilab:

Hello my favorite people! Isn't it grand @The Contessa?! This really should be my single of the week, but it came so perfectly after the John Barry song.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Rob Kopp:

Hi everyone. Working on my next book PLATENBOEK 4 is soooo relaxed when listening to this radio programme.
  3:09pm P-90:

Greetings Sheila! I always loved Ski Chase! Classic John Barry, very 60's-nostalgic.

Hi, glad to be boom booming today
Avatar 3:10pm Linda Lee:

wow ~ extra special show today! love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Adrian in London:

Good evening Sheila, good evening everyone. Pygmalion is such a great record. By far the best Slowdive LP. I think I read recently how much Alan McGee regrets dumping them and admits what a great record this is. *INTERRUPTS SELF* Jenny HVAL!!!
Avatar 3:11pm djsheilab:

@Linda Lee This show does feel very special. I found SO many exciting records!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Rob Kopp:

Nice title of your show. Reminds me of I never met a girl like you before (KInks).
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Michael 98145:

you have a happy audience as always
Avatar 3:12pm djsheilab:

@Adrian in London Haha! Great post! Yup brand new Jenny Hval. And that Slowdive LP is a beauty, though I have a soft spot for Just For A Day.
  3:12pm P-90:

It does feel like an extra-special show, right from the top!
  3:14pm JakeGould:

Wow! Still experimenting with opening tracks? Quite an epic choice this week!
  3:15pm Cooh John:

Hello djsheilab and boom boomers. Raining here but Sophisticated Boom Boom is my rainbow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Adrian in London:

@Sheila Yes, Just for a Day is lovely too. I found myself listening to the first Ride LP a lot this week and loving Polar Bear. I saw them a lot when they started out.
  3:16pm JakeGould:

Hey Cooh John! Bring that sweat rain to disgusting NYC.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:22pm JtotheK:

nice peggy march - just procured this 45 a few weeks ago myself!
  3:22pm JakeGould:

The one thing I like about this heat is in NYC is you can pretty much just turn to anyone on the subway in NYC and just say, “This heat’s nuts!” and they will agree.
Avatar 3:22pm The Contessa:

This is dreamy to my ears
Avatar 3:25pm djsheilab:

@JtotheK Sweet! I think it may be my favorite of her's.
Avatar 3:25pm djsheilab:

She's as heavy as a Chevy! BEST LYRIC EVER.
Avatar 3:25pm The Contessa:

Hello @Ken, anything happening we should know about? The weather… birds?
Avatar 3:27pm Cecile:

is that Peggy March the "little Peggy March"?
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Rob Kopp:

my favorite Peggy March song is Too long away where she's accompanied by Dutch band The Hunters featuring a young Jan Akkerman
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:28pm Bend Sinister:

@The Contessa - Hi there. It's been hot here lately and most birds seem to lie low during the day. It's fun to lie back and watch hawks and vultures circling up in the sky.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Adrian in London:

@Sheila Ah, she played Koko in Camden the other week. I know Glass went to see her.
Avatar 3:36pm Linda Lee:

Jake ~ someone might just say 'heats? boils more like it'
  3:37pm JakeGould:

The thing about this weather in NYC right now is all the pizza crusts feel soggy and all the food from food trucks feel sweaty. I’m just going to eat savory ice cream for the next few weeks.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm JtotheK:

@sheilaB - per our discussion last week, at area shop I did not find a bronzettes 'hot spot' on parkway. and i learned that i missed out on vickie baines 'country girl' on parkway, and probably passed it in bins without realizing. ugh. i'm convincing myself it would've been out of my budget.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm JtotheK:

but i /did/ find a Neil Sedaka "Too Late" 45 (for 50 cents!) which was quite rewarding.
  3:39pm Joanne Stato:

Boom Boom everybody! Got here late, just in time to hear Sheila's upbeat recap of set 1! So good to be here! (Love this Fashion Monster.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Adrian in London:

@SHeila Listening to this set, and knowing how giddy you get, it's barely credible to recall you started your WFMU tenure by playing three weeks of despairingly desolate sad music. However did you cope?!
Avatar 3:42pm statoj:

Weird. It signed me in as Joanne Stato" but I am really "statoj"!!!
Avatar 3:44pm statoj:

Yes! I remember the "Sad sheilab." All sheilabs are wonderful. Different faces of the same prism. It perhaps I should say "diamond."
  3:45pm Cooh John:

looking forward to your next Friedman slip JG.
Avatar 3:45pm Cecile:

I missed your update, Carm. Thank you!
Avatar 3:46pm Cecile:

Cybill is an A-OK singer!
  3:46pm JakeGould:

HAAHHAH! Friedman slip!
  3:47pm JakeGould:

What’s the “Friedman Slip?” a hand written number you get from the guy at the counter at the deli?
Avatar 3:47pm Linda Lee:

Avatar 3:48pm Linda Lee:

this pussycats record is sublime.
Avatar 3:49pm statoj:

I like the way she says "bay-bee."
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I wonder if this is before or after Josie was their leader.
Avatar 3:51pm Linda Lee:

apropos of nothin, but i've been listening to fmu for 30 years now & i've never heard 'poor side of town' by johnny rivers.
  3:52pm JakeGould:

Now I want to sail into Walker’s Cay. Do they serve savory ice cream?
Avatar 3:53pm statoj:

Linda Lee, would that be a request? Great song.
Avatar 3:53pm Linda Lee:

i'd be totally thrilled. i've loved that damn record since it was new :-D
Avatar 3:55pm djsheilab:

@Linda Lee I don't know that record. Must check it out.

I have only been a devotee for 1 year (better late than never) but I would love to hear Maria Muldaur (nee D'Amato) sing 'Cause I'm a Woman...W-O-M-A-N.
Avatar 3:55pm djsheilab:

@JtotheK Congrats on picking up that FAB Neil Sedaka 45 for so cheap!
Avatar 3:56pm djsheilab:

@Cecile @Linda Lee Sounds right up my alley!
Avatar 3:56pm Cecile:

wait, this song is filthier than I remembered.
Avatar 3:57pm βrian:

Today, the playlist background is 'chilled buttermilk borscht.' Made with the freshest of beets, it's quite tasty.
Avatar 3:57pm Linda Lee:

Johnny Rivers did 'Secret Agent Man' originally. 'Poor Side' concerns a woman shamed.
Avatar 3:58pm Cecile:

it's melodramatic, and Johnny is a great singer
Avatar 4:00pm Cecile:

yeah, someone's sailing into her cay. OH NO!
Avatar 4:01pm βrian:

Good pop is Sprecher's Root Beer, for example.
Avatar 4:02pm Cecile:

she has actually sung cabaret for a long time.

I think the title is there because she didn't get good reviews for the movie At Long Last Love.
  4:02pm JakeGould:

Hey! I actually like that “Cybill Getz Better” title!
Avatar 4:02pm Cecile:

we agree on something, Jake.
  4:02pm famous original italianicewolf:

I have a Cybill Shepard record, I guess it's that one!
  4:02pm P-90:

Cybil also sang quite nicely in the musical film "At Long Last Love."
  4:03pm famous original italianicewolf:

I want to say I bought it at Footlights RIP
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:04pm JtotheK:

yeah, that Sedaka 45 is great! glad to have found it. (speaking of pop 45s...) now i need to find Paul Anka "I Can't Help Loving You" on RCA -- have had it (and that Sedaka) before, but realize both should be filed permanently...
  4:04pm JakeGould:

@ItalianIceWolf: First, nice nick today! Also, yeah… Footlights… I miss them too.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm JtotheK:

and also on the 'pop' discussion - there's a book about northern soul records, and they are broken down into a few sub-categories, one of which is 'pop' - and i enjoy trying to track the 'pop' northern 45s down... good stuff! (another good one is Trade Martin 'Work Song' on RCA)

that's what it's like living in the woods a mile from anywhere, Cecile :-)
Avatar 4:16pm Cecile:

that's OK, I keep discovering things I have no idea about, and I live 2 miles from a city.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:16pm JtotheK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Adrian in London:

@James Surely you mean Ian 'Lovejoy' McShane? ;-)
  4:20pm famous original italianicewolf:

I actually bought some records today! I got Cher, Diana Ross, and Loleatta Hollaway, all in the dollar bin.

This store was also selling used cassette tapes for 1.99
  4:20pm JakeGould:

Kind of funny “tits” came up since someone was ragging on “Doo Rag” on Bryce’s list and that reminded me of Bob Log III and his minor indie hit, “Clap Your Tits.”

I’m not advocating, I’m just saying…
  4:20pm Goats Head Stew:

Hey Sheila, great set! Great to hear you on the radio. Love, Mariko and Stuart, London.
Avatar 4:21pm djsheilab:

@famous original italianicewolf Nice!
Avatar 4:21pm Cecile:

my friend got a cheesy photo of McShane during his Lovejoy days and posted it prominently when Deadwood came around.

which Loleatta?
Avatar 4:21pm statoj:

Lovejoy indeed!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm listener james from westwood:

@Adrian: I first met McShane via "Lovejoy" reruns, so when I eventually dug into "Deadwood," it was a huge contrast!
  4:22pm famous original italianicewolf:

I liked his guest appearances on Magnum P.I.
Avatar 4:22pm Cecile:

actually, that song wasn't on Rumours. It's a b-side that somehow took on a life of its own. I'm a little bit of a stickler for that, having experienced the original at the time.
Avatar 4:22pm Cecile:

it's a track from the Rumours period.
Avatar 4:23pm djsheilab:

@Cecile It's on the reissue of Rumours. I'm playing the reissue.

that's fine. I'm splitting hairs.

what a funny mix on this Tutti Hil single. it's like someone whispering in your ear in the bedroom with the radio on in the kitchen.

@Cecile: Whatever that Fleetwood Mac song was and wherever it came from it was a nice song. There, I said it.

St. Trinian's was based on a Ronald Searle cartoon strip from the 1940s, later made in to a series of movies in the '50s! It's a critical touchstone of British pop culture.

Hi SB, I'm listening yours in Manchester here (routed from Cologne, Paris & London). Glad to hear you'd do another despondent women song show. Arriving JFK at your showtime. Hope I'll make it. See you!
