Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Alex In Illinois:

We actually are having heat warnings here in the Chicago area, but I would bet that it is still hotter in the Topeka area. So folks in my area should not complain, when any Topekans are around.

I went to a scheduled reading of the Ionesco play "Rhinoceros" last year, only to learn the organizers had decided to switch it up. The replacement was The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein. And I says, "Hah, whichiwuzzwootah-hah..wha'?" That'll knock yer cultural-context compass into a cocked hat.
Avatar 12:36pm ndbob:

@pedro yep - Ive read that article - pretty sobering

Bass line in dreams ill never see reminiscent of that in "Baby its you"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

still b/p!
  12:39pm Dean:

Man, it's been a long time since I've thought about Ionesco! I think I saw performances of excerpts at high school theater festivals ages ago. That and Jean-Claude Van Itallie's "The Serpent."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm annie:

the college theater troupe put on many of ionesco's plays. what fun they were. and there were the teevee productions .. i thought he was a genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Artie Haywire:

@pedro - yes, required. explains a lot. though the mind still struggles with to comprehend how such a person can exist, much less be admired.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm melinda:

Wow, yet another Nina Simone cover I wouldn't have expected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Webhamster Henry:

Her German pronunciation is off, but you can't fault her enthusiasm.

Sorry Goyim.

Dada nonsense, isn't it? Like Schwitters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Goyim in the AM:

(My rage is to cover for my arousal.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Goyim in the AM:

Seriously, now: Schwitters and Ball's work is generally interpreted according to the rules of German pronunciation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, she was reciting Dada nonsense.
  1:05pm Mhinca:

Recognize the lyrics but not the tune! Thats no Angel otm. Oy...

Well, that's the last time I poke a turkey with a bucket of envelope paste!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Goyim in the AM:

Swiss is a language. They just call it a dialect so they won't have to teach any foreigners how to speak it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Webhamster Henry:

A "cover" is technically a version meant to break into a different segment of the record consuming public.
Avatar 1:13pm ndbob:

not to mention Big Maybelle singing The Eggplant That Ate Chicago
Avatar 1:13pm ndbob:

a really different segment of the public there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Uncle Michael:

I suppose a "cover" once technically meant that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Webhamster Henry:

Ich bin ein Pod-person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Goyim in the AM:

So you would "cover" the country demographic with the new version? Makes sense.
  1:23pm Dean:

Love this Bob & Ray, but Nina Simone's cover of it is good, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Webhamster Henry:

For instance, Bob & Ray cover "Do You Think I'm Sexy" for the over 60 demographic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm annie:

bob and ray... heart them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm annie:

i am a huge fan of "merry backstage"

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Goyim in the AM:

@Jeff: Oh, no doubt. A record clerk friend of mine would warn the smooth jazz yuppies, but to no avail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm listener james from westwood:

This is one fine, delightfully long track. Between this and Doug's Can cut it's been a good day for long German jams!
  1:54pm Dean:

I shit you not, this is an abstract of a recent paper by a statistician at Columbia: "How are people unconsciously influenced by the rise of Donald Trump? We test the theory that Trump’s rise has irrationally changed the behavior of one group of people: elite bridge players, whom we assume are otherwise completely typical. We examine the hands played in one of the premier North American bridge events, the Vanderbilt Knockout Tournament, in 1999 and 2015. We find that players had significantly higher probabilities of making No Trump contracts in the 2015 period compared with the earlier periods. We conclude that in the latter period, defending players are subtly deranged by the prospect of Trump and play their hands worse. By contrast, a 2015 European tournament shows no significant difference with the earlier 1999 tournament. This strengthens our conclusion."
  1:56pm Dean:

Footnote 2 from the paper: "Please do not tell our employers that we spent any time doing this."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

  2:01pm Dean:

And footnote 13 is anchored to an itemized list of statements numbered (1), (2), and (4). It reads, "Point (3) was removed to save space, even though this footnote explaining that decision takes up more space than the original point (3)."
Avatar 2:01pm Wilson K:

Sweet Melinda! The peasants call her the goddess of gloom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm annie:

that's funny, Dean, when i'm playing scrabble(aka WWF), and i have the right letters, i play "veto" instead of vote, because i'm sending a psychic message to obama to veto the DARK act. t's my small effort for food justtice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Guido from Cologne:

Great group!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Uncle Michael:

'nother long jam coming up in this set...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm melinda:

I can barely tolerate the mild Melinda's. But it's nice to have a bottle of hot sauce in the fridge with my name on it.
Avatar 2:06pm still b/p:

Every hear R & The R "Our Day Will Come" on big decent speakers with the bass really saying hello? Expands the already fun dimension.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

two teaspoons in that is spread pretty thin...it's got sme zing but it's not uncomfortable
Avatar 2:07pm Wilson K:

The Melinda's XXX is just the right mix of fire and flavor. The Naga Jolkia one will have you coughing and sputtering. Hands down the best brand out there.
  2:07pm Dean:

Looks like Bigfat's has a new 708 hot sauce. Love the 707. 808 is a monster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

I'll give it a try, still b/p.
Avatar 2:07pm Wilson K:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

I deeply regret getting rid of Man's "Maximum Darkness," the live album that featured Cipollina. Great version of "Codine."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

I'm going to seek that out Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm annie:

i discovered a great spicy peanut sauce: House of Tsang; most excellent flavor
  2:12pm KevinfromBayRidge:

And you, my dear uncle, are No Fool! Tenks for the the Quicksilver m
  2:13pm Dean:

Great Man album, great Cipollina appearance. So why did I get rid of it? That's easy. I'm an idiot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Uncle Michael:

Glad you're here to enjoy it, Kevin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

Wilson, I've never tried the Naga Jolkia. Probably won't. I have nothing to prove.
  2:20pm Dean:

Bigfat's 808 is a Naga Jolkia sauce. Really, it's not *that* hot, but it is oddly smoky, where the less fired-up 707 is rich in citrus, better suited with a wide range of food.
  2:23pm Dean:

Today is a day to celebrate Clinton. George, that is. He turns 75.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

I like him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Jeff Golick:

XXX better for daily use. Naga Jolokia will uh... make your gravity fail you.
  2:25pm Dean:

I'm with him.

After I reported hearing and enjoying Trementina, Le Hell Gang, and Föllakzoid on WFMU some weeks ago, a friend of mine from Chile reported that Los Tres and Los Bunkers are also very fine Chilean bands.

From chiles to Chile. This is a great thread.
  2:30pm Dean:

@Wilson K: Readers who join the conversation in medias res, however, might be puzzled by your remark that "XXX better for daily use."
Avatar 2:34pm Wilson K:

@Dean, puzzlement is good. Leads to inquiry. And thanks for putting me on to Bigfat's—gonna check that out.
  2:34pm Dean:

There is no question in my mind that Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch pay attention to the Louvin Brothers.

After cleaning chiles to make tamales, guys, do not go pee-pee without first washing the hands or removing the gloves.
  2:39pm K Wilde:

Awesome bed music today BTW
  2:40pm Dean:

...and of course wash again after you've finished before returning to tamale preparation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Jeff Golick:
