If they're playing for free, they might not play long enough for you to get GBV drunk.
Avatar 3:10pm Cecile:

bring $15 cash and leave your plastic at home. That should limit your drunkenness to an acceptable level.

About 5 years ago we, Platenclub Utrecht, released one of the very first recordings of Shocking Blue singer Mariska Veres on an EP: Summerime (also from '64). And about 20 years ago a friend of mine, Jimmy Tigges, who collects Summertime versions, released a wonderful book with over 1200 versions of that song. So good to here this song as first one after your holiday.

That video is like Priscilla Queen of the Desert meets Burning Wicker Man. Must have been one of our students who worked on it.
  3:24pm Mark R:

I wish they still showed videos somewhere, so I could aspire to be a DJ and show that, and some Monkees videos and maybe John Coltrane. That's a set.
Avatar 3:24pm Cecile:

Mark R, I know, right? They make everyone else's over the top look restrained.

The Chantels! Excellent choice!!!!
  3:25pm Mark R:

You can't say Indian giver any more can you? Especially since it's been established that it was the White Man who was the real chiseler. I totally remember this song, though.

@JtotheK I had a feeling I'd hear from you about this one :) :)
Avatar 3:25pm Cecile:

you know, Mark, there are now VJs popping up around town now at clubs. I like that idea. Like the old days at bars when people would play every video they had.

Oh yes, chantells, wondered where i knew this from
  3:26pm zm:

OMG I played back all of your past programs! I can keep up with you weekly now. things noticed from your past shows were: 筒美 京平's indeed great song writer. I liked 木綿のハンカチーフ. 2: never thought 山口 百恵 was that BAD. 3: 藤 圭子 rules! I will take another despondant women program anyday! 4: Did you know "Susan Rewis /They Say You Found A New Baby" reminded me TVC15?

I'd invite people to participate and interact with the videos, a la "Rocky Horror."

Every time I see an arrow (like the Jarvis sleeve), it reminds me of Pete Quaife of The Kinks, who putted his signature on my copy of the 1st Kinks LP above Dave Davies, and then with an arrow pointed to himself :-). For a long time I was only missing Dave Davies' autograph, but I got his on the 18th of december last year, the first show where Ray and Dave were on stage together for 25 years.

Avatar 5:06pm Cecile:

and why trash Detroit? it doesn't need your help.
Avatar 5:06pm Cecile:

Sorry, I'm not the target audience.
  5:07pm Dean:

There are three places where I'd like to live out my days. I haven't been to two of them. They are St. Louis (been there), Detroit, and the island of Cyprus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Cliff in Prague:

Taking off for the night, thanks Sheila!
Avatar 5:10pm djsheilab:

@Cliff in Prague thanks for being here!

Thanks for the link, Carmichael.
"It's probably one of the most famous sets of lyrics in recent Japanese music history but people often can't remember the title or the singer behind the song."
Nice article!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Loved that Sharon Jones track earlier!

In my college days, Q98 FM had a mystery song contest at midnight on Fridays. We'd dial all but the last digit while the DJ was talking. We scored about four free Domino's pizzas while they were running that contest.
  5:15pm Mandy:

Sheila! Are you going to the Takarazuka Revue performances next weekend at Lincoln Center? 200+ member Japanese girl group!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm melinda:

Thanks for that tip, Ken, I'll keep it in mind next time I want to score some free tix.
Avatar 5:17pm Cecile:

Ok, I'm slow, but I figured out the Detroit song is funny because the character in the lyrics has no idea what old new York or current Detroit are about. She's an unreliable narrator.
  5:17pm ?:

That Carole Bennett track really pumps in mono! Glad I have that button..

...werkweek done - a little sleep deprived - I'ma drink redwine & get a little goofy to Sophisticated Boomy show...

The uncle of mine who loved Alan Parsons Project was also an immense H&O fan.
Avatar 5:26pm djsheilab:

@Listener James He has EXCELLENT taste!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Bronwyn Bishop:

I dig this but nothing beats Leonard Nimoy's version
Avatar 5:27pm djsheilab:

@MONEYBAG$ The Shut Up Weirdo gals are in the house.
  5:27pm zm:

recalling Drugstore Cowboy..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm melinda:

Leonard Nimoy did this??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Loves Jackie.
  5:28pm matsutaro:

Add Roxy Music and YMO to that mix and you're describing my uncle, too, james.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm melinda:

zm it reminds me of Drugstore Cowboy, too.
  5:28pm chalmers:

There was also the Annie Lennox/Al Green version used in "Scrooged."
Avatar 5:29pm djsheilab:

@Bronwyn + @melinda I haven't heard the Leonard Nimoy version either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nimoy: 'I wouldn't say I was a Sinatra.'
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Carmichael:

Leonard Nimoy sang a LOT of songs. If I Had a Hammer was yucky, as was that strange number about Bilbo Baggins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm melinda:

Leonard did a nice rendition of If I Were a Carpenter.
Swag For Life Member 5:34pm nightjeans:

I remember the one from Scrooged. Isley Bros had a pretty smooth one too
  5:37pm Wilson.:

I agree with everything that you are saying right now!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 5:39pm listener james from westwood:

Middle Eastern pop is like 99.99999% new to me, so I'm happy to hear any of it, that considered Spearsish over there or not!
  5:40pm Phyllis:

Hello to the DJ playing the Israeli song right now--- There are tons of Israeli radio stations on the web and great apps for your smartphone. Many non commercial stations have "Jewish" shows, usually on Sunday's, which play a lot of current Israeli music as well. Keep exploring!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I've always felt Xenophobia was based on Ignorance. 'I hate gays!' Do you actually know any??...'No - I just think I'll hate 'em!' Then you meet people & surprise - they're people. Just like you. Keep hoping.

@Phyllis Thanks for the tip!

Dear DJ HotRod played Middle Eastern pop occasionally. I enjoyed her recent return gig at WFMU.

...Sinatra & Elvis were all about their writers & arrangers too...I think U.S. GirlPop reflects our culture's simultaneously hypersexualized & conservative nature. The WomanChild.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Stanley:

I do like your show, djsheilab but have to admit that, as far as I know this was the first time I've heard a Britney Spears song.
Avatar 5:49pm djsheilab:

@Stanley I love Britney's records. First-class Swedish songwriters behind many of them.
Avatar 5:51pm Cecile:

I like Toxic. That's a good dancefloor jam
Avatar 5:51pm Cecile:

Is that Angel "Corpus Christi" Olsen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Bronwyn Bishop:

What a funny cover. Also the Angel Olsen was amazing
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2020 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Oh, fun! The Aerosmith version!
  5:54pm zm:

I thought their rendition was better than this??
Avatar 5:55pm statoj:

Sheilab, the way you played Britney next to the Israeli singer , Sahit, allowed me to hear her very interesting phrasing and rhythms in a new light. This is just one example among hundreds where you cut through prejudice and conformity to share a musician with your listeners so they can enjoy it through your perspective. Just one reason that makes you so special. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm mauri:

strange music to cycle from the local to home. britney sure was nasally working for the gnats.
