Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

Better than earlier this week, so we're starting out well!
Avatar 12:01pm βrian:

Blue skies over the isthmus. Can't complain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Charlie:

Isthmus. Nice word, that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

Hey, that guy's covering Petra Haden!
::ducks thrown CD case::
  12:07pm Listening Out There:

Is this Nino Rota from "Juliet of the Spirits"...or?
Avatar 12:08pm Jeff:

Word associations are funny. I'm trying to think of ithsmusses I know which aren't of Panama.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm listener james from westwood:

And dis guy's covering Klaus Nomi!
::ducks thrown Joey Arias::
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Parq:

Late, but not as late as I thought I would be. Crunch day for your faithful Parqbench, so not much time to comment, but in here digging the name game.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Parq:

James from Westwood, you so crazy.
Avatar 12:10pm βrian:

It's a ballroom chair dance on this end.
Avatar 12:10pm Michael Shelley:

...why Greg Hawkes?
Avatar 12:10pm geezerette:

This never ocurred to me before but I rhink Nino Rota must have been a Charlie Chaplin fan.
Avatar 12:11pm ndbob:

afternoon Charlie and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

Was just about to ask if that was Greg Hawkes...
  12:13pm Listening Out There:

Oh, "8 1/2". Thanks, Mr. Host Sir....
Avatar 12:16pm sphere:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Charlie:

Big Busy Doing Nothing greetings to Listening Out There, Jeff, Parq, Michael Shelley, geezerette, ndBob, Uncle Michael (that makes three), sphere -- very glad to see you all!
  12:19pm famous original icecreamwolf:

Hello hello
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Jeff Golick:

Can't believe I missed "Bob the Bob," but I faved it anyway. Hi Charlie and BDNers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Charlie:

geezerette: Interesting connection there re: Nino Rota - Charlie Chaplin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Charlie:

yay, famous original icecreamwolf is here :)
and Jeff the Jeff!
Avatar 12:22pm βrian:

And here I am without neither beret nor turtleneck!
Avatar 12:24pm βrian:

Eh, with neither ...
  12:24pm Listening Out There:

In the beginning, there was Max Roach. And it was good...
Avatar 12:25pm Michael:

Alpha pattern it appears.
Avatar 12:27pm Michael:

Noble Sissle seems like a Bob and Ray name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Charlie:

Haha, yes, Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Charlie:

And what about his partner, Eubie Blake?
  12:28pm Listening Out There:

Noble Sissel...the brand you've known and loved for over 40 years...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Charlie:

Does the picture look like Greg Hawkes? That's actually a friend of mine from college.
  12:30pm Listening Out There:

Always loved this tune from "Shoot the Piano Player"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, it looks *just* like Greg Hawkes.
Avatar 12:32pm βrian:

Like honorable hemp. (A source of moral fiber.)
  12:33pm Listening Out There:

Maybe Charlie went to college with Greg Hawkes? Yeah, that's the ticket...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

No bad versions of Jessica?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Webhamster Henry:

I have this EP ! (I'm a big Singing Science fan)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Charlie:

Hy, Henry! The sun *is* a mass of incandescent gas. (And so, sometimes, am I.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Charlie:

Uncle M -- Jessica is such a happy song. I wish I had the single edit (is there a single edit?). I would've played it.
Avatar 12:41pm βrian:

Elemental Pea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Webhamster Henry:

TMBG's scientific song update retcons it to "The Sun is a Miasma of Incandescent Plasma"
Avatar 12:43pm βrian:

Q, Orestes UVX, Why Z?
Avatar 12:44pm βrian:

Sorry, that's "Cue Orestes."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Charlie:

Que? Qu'est-ce que c'est? Pourquoi? Pourquoi non?
Avatar 12:48pm βrian:

"Ah, Bach!"
  12:48pm rf:

great thanks
Avatar 12:49pm Mayuko:

Late but now listening! Hello Charlie and everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Charlie:

Hello, rf, and Mayuko! I think we need to send out for more snacks and beverages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Webhamster Henry:

I made up those two letter codes, and for some reason, the idea has stuck around. It was just so I could have a neat looking list of playlist directories!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Perhaps Babe Ruth candy bars, Charlie. Howdy everyone!
Avatar 12:56pm βrian:

Untidy directories are the Devil's playground!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Charlie:

Well, Henry, we all need organizing principles! (Like songs w. names in the titles, played alphabetically.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Webhamster Henry:

It's a little tough to do in Russian, nothing starts with ы,ъ, or ь.
And Mayuko can tell you how hard it is in Japanese.
Avatar 1:02pm βrian:

UTF-8 sort order comes to the rescue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Charlie:

At first, most of those 2-letter codes matched the DJs' initials or the show's name. Now they're sometimes rather random. How many 2-letter combos are there altogether?
Avatar 1:09pm sphere:

2 * 26^2 combinations, according to Wikipedia.
  1:10pm βrian:

cummings sorts after Cummings. Sorry, Ed.
Avatar 1:13pm βrian:

Godfrey Reggio?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Webhamster Henry:

Yes, if lowercase is allowed, yes (2*26)^2 = 2704. I bet WFMU will exhaust that number in the not too distant future.
Avatar 1:15pm βrian:

Not "Tammy's in Love"? Well ok, then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Parq:

Is that a reference to Cafe Regio on MacDougal? I confess, I've never seen Shaft.
Avatar 1:16pm Jeff:

Yep. Especially because lowercase isn't currently allowed, so you can axe the "2*".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Parq:

"Reggio", 'scuse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm listener james from westwood:

Some quality samples in this quality cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Charlie:

Parq -- yes, that Cafe Reggio.
That's ok, on the album they misspell it "Regio"
Avatar 1:20pm Jeff:

...but I'm told numeric digits won't break the current Kenzo code. I expect the next frontier (before going hog-wild and expanding beyond two characters) might be moving into digits (maybe just for the second character at first). So 26 * 36, unless digits which look too much like letters get forbidden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Webhamster Henry:

Nice to work in a little Partch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Charlie:

Some "pet" samples (pet sounds that is).
Also, I think the main sample was from Dana Gillespie's version of "Pay You Back with Interest."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Charlie:

"going hog-wild and expanding beyond two characters" -- I like your idea of going hog-wild, Jeff;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Charlie:

Henry -- yes, and nice to hear Partch with saxophones!
  1:24pm Katya:

Great playlist today, Charlie (as usual)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm schmutz:

sneaking in a very late hello (i first typed that as "hate lello" which made me very uncomfortable)
Avatar 1:25pm geezerette:

Charlie you're playing such great stuff!
Avatar 1:26pm βrian:

And now Charlie has schmutz on his playlist, dear me.
Avatar 1:27pm βrian:

Yvette? Yvonne? Yves? Yasmin? ...
Avatar 1:28pm Jeff:

@Charlie: I'm a bottomless cesspool of depravity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Charlie:

Hey there, Katya and schmutz!
I don't mind being a little schmutzig:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Charlie:

Thanks, geezerette!
Jeff -- aren't we all?
Avatar 1:36pm βrian:

Hah!
Avatar 1:42pm geezerette:

Nice Z!
Avatar 1:42pm βrian:

Listening in my 1972 Chevy Vega ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Mike East:

I was hoping my Z prediction was correct :)
Avatar 1:43pm Roberto:

I remember this version of ASZ being used during a pivotal scene in the movie Being There.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Webhamster Henry:

I was exactly looking for On Beyond Zebra recordings to finish this off. See? I don't need a show at all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Mike East:

great show, Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm listener james from westwood:

On Beyond Zebra!! My favorite Dr. Seuss book!!
Avatar 1:44pm ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Charlie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Charlie:

yes, bob!
Avatar 1:51pm Jeff:

Also Sprach Dr. Seusstra!
Avatar 1:52pm βrian:

Thanks, Charlie. I really enjoyed this — though I have nothing to show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Mike East:

nice one, Jeff
Avatar 1:54pm geezerette:

Wonderful show Charlie! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Webhamster Henry:

Doin' the PigPen dance here.
Avatar 1:55pm βrian:

And why not the schmutz? All in the family.
Avatar 1:56pm ndbob:

excellent show Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Charlie:

Jeff -- hah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Charlie:

Thanks, everyone for being here today. I had fun:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm listener james from westwood:

Fun as hell on this side too; thanks, Charlie!
Avatar 1:59pm Michael:

Very nice - Thanks Charlie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Charlie:

addendum (or just dumdum): Actually, maybe it was Greg Hawkes after all, whose face I would not have recognized at the time my friend sent me that picture (c. 1980). It looks a lot like my friend, and was something I thought he did as a self-portrait. I removed the picture (which is now at the bottom of the playlist) from the top of the playlist and replaced it with the one that's there now. Good eyes, Michaels Shelley and Uncle!
