My favorite intro theme ever. What gravitas!
  3:03pm JakeGould:

OFMG! The theme is back! And now Nellie McKay? Nice start!
  3:03pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Hey Sheila, how ya doin'? My flight's this Wednesday!
  3:03pm P-90:

Nice opening. Hi Sheila B!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Adrian in London:

Ah, and as the theme tune plays I start to relaaaxxxxxxxx for the first time today.

Afternoon, Sheila and all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Rob Kopp:

@Adrian: Remain with Sheila
Avatar 3:05pm Evan From Seattle:

Hi Contessa and Adrian. I very nearly stayed up all night watching the news. I couldn't believe it. I'm still in shock. My friends over there seem to be going between confused as to how it could have happened and angry that it did.
Avatar 3:05pm βrian:

Cliff, have you given much thought to how you're going to explain to future students how to use the hyphenated "ass" modifier?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar 3:06pm djsheilab:

Hello all of you lovely people. Thank you for being here. I am in a bad way today. All this terrible news. I don't think I've been this shaken up in ages. And I send my love to everyone in Europe + beyond.
  3:07pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

βrian I have a degree in linguistics, so I'll just look up the relevant research in the journals, haha

Sheila so sorry to hear that! *hugs*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Michael 98145:

  3:08pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Michael 98145 - dumbasses.

If there are any leftover gift croissants, by the way, I can help with those.

Bah-Dah-Boom. Boom.
Hiya, SheilaB and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Michael 98145:

again, this show is a best antidote
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Adrian in London:

Thanks Sheila, Robb and Evan. A long bike ride helped to smooth my mood but still, would you believe I've been using rather intemperate language today? But at least I'm not up to my neck in mud at the Glastonbury Festival!
Avatar 3:09pm βrian:

That was a Small-England-Ass maneuver, was it not?
  3:10pm JakeGould:

The Brexit vote has left me the opposite of whelmed and bobulated if there were only words that could described the opposite of whelmed and bobulated.
Avatar 3:10pm djsheilab:

@Michael 98145 that's nice to hear. Thank you :)

Avatar 3:13pm The Contessa:

Courage (French accent) dear friend
  3:13pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

βrian definitely some sort of maneuver involving large numbers of Asses in England. Also saw the Telegraph reporting this morning that Sinn Fein and SNP are likely to demand independence from UK so they can rejoin EU.
  3:14pm JakeGould:

“Even though I voted to leave, this morning I woke up and I just — the reality did actually hit me,” one woman told the news channel ITV News. “If I’d had the opportunity to vote again, it would be to stay.”

Avatar 3:14pm βrian:

Ah, the price of a paroxysm!
Avatar 3:14pm djsheilab:

@JakeGould I just don't understand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Rob Kopp:

Ofcourse Wilders and Le Pen now want a referendum in The Netherlands and France.
  3:15pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

JakeGould maybe they should just hold a revote? I'm sure that new feline PM they have is a thoughtful creature
  3:15pm modchick:

Loving this Solveig song. I didn't know about them.
  3:15pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: I’m going to do my laundry and watch the clothes going in circles. There is this little middle eastern kid who likes to run into this laundromat just to watch the clothes going in circles. That kid may be onto something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Trump will make the EU great again. And make the British Empire great again, too, for that matter. Hoo boy.
Avatar 3:16pm geezerette:

Hey everybody! That Washington Post story sounds like The Onion.
Scary, Trump absolutely could be installed. It CAN happen here.
Sheila B. you are an emotional security blanket.
  3:16pm JakeGould:

In the great scheme of things hasn’t history shown us how isolationism all works out for the best in the end? *chirps* *chirps* *chirps* *chirps* *howls* *chirps* *chirps* *some guy shouting “Idiot!”*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Michael 98145:

It's all about those immigrants, isn't it ?
  3:18pm JakeGould:

We should just unify the globe under one, united flag so we can get rid if this immigrant problem once and for all.
Avatar 3:18pm djsheilab:

@JakeGould I love that idea. Nationalism is the worst.
  3:19pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Actually I know someone on Reddit who voted for Brexit, and he said for him it was the heavy-handed policies of the EU. He's definitely NOT anti-immigrant.
  3:19pm Cooh John:

Hello djsheilab and all boom boomers. Love the Peter Gunn. Poison Ivy collects different versions of the song.
Avatar 3:19pm The Contessa:

Sheila B for president!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Adrian in London:

@Sheila Listened to last week's show during the week and bought the Lake Ruth seven. Trouble had played it and you reminded me of how great it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm northguineahills:

For some reason, I love this Pizzicato Five Album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Guido from Cologne:

Nationalism even doesn't serve the nation.
It just pretends to.
Avatar 3:20pm djsheilab:

Amen @Guido from Cologne!
  3:20pm P-90:

@Sheila: Just breathe deeply, and hang in there: you're surrounded by friends at the moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Mick:

Many hugs @djsheilab, and many thanks for your happiness-making show. My London friends are freaking out too, but we'll all get through it.
  3:21pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: Ha! Funny/sad anecdote about the “One Flag” thing: While I’m American born my parents were immigrants. And when I went to summer camp I was treated like an “immigrant” because of that. Anyway, we had a field trip to the United Nations and everyone got flags from the gift shop. I got a United Nations flag and everyone else got a U.S. flag. I got bullied and into minor fights the whole bus ride back to Brooklyn. Fin! Murica!
Avatar 3:21pm geezerette:

This is a great group of people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Rob Kopp:

I think Germany welcomed more refugees than all the other 28 countries together (sorry: 27)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:21pm Michael 98145:

@Jake, the John Birch Society wouldn't like that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Rob Kopp:

UK: Crash
Avatar 3:22pm djsheilab:

@Geezerette Seriously! I am so comforted by all of you.
  3:22pm modchick65:

@djsheilab -- Let's make the Primitives song a Long Distance Dedication to the economy.
  3:23pm JakeGould:

I just came up with this cool new flag that presents a crazy new idea. www.thirstyquill.com...
Avatar 3:23pm βrian:

I've always preferred the pretty flags. But then I favor sports teams according to their uniforms.
  3:23pm JakeGould:

@Michael98145: Now I want a birch beer. :/
  3:24pm modchick65:

This is a different version of Crash than the one I know.
Avatar 3:24pm geezerette:

Good one Jake.
  3:25pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

The pound just crashed....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm northguineahills:

I even got my Pizzicato Five membership card w/ that album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Rob Kopp:

Austrian painter Hundertwasser came up with a flag for Israel and Palestina, hoping it would help to join these people.
  3:26pm modchick65:

This set's theme seems to be partially "People Doing Things That Are Bad For Them That Others Tell Them Not To Do."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Rob Kopp:

Here you can see Hundertwasser's flag: www.tlaxcala-int.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Adrian in London:

@Modchick This version of Crash is the re-recorded version on RCA. The original was on Lazy a bit earlier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm Ken From Hyde Park:

In U.S. news, Obama named Stonewall Inn a national historic site today. No doubt, the usual bunch of crazies will decry that just because.
  3:29pm dave c:

will be with the show once ronnie spector has finished dazzling glastonbury
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Adrian in London:

@Robb Kopp Did you see that some wag had erected a Mexican flag on the border of Trump's golf club in Scotland?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm northguineahills:

awesome Ken!
  3:29pm modchick65:

@Adrian, Yes, I have the one from 1988? It was on their album Lovely, I think... had the picture of her on the front with the white background. I think... There were a lot of squeal-y overdubbed guitars in this one that weren't in mine.
  3:29pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Poor New Zealand, they completely failed to change their flag to something less resembling Australia's out of sheer apathy (seriously, the black & white fern one is such a striking design, why wouldn't they go with that?!)
Avatar 3:29pm djsheilab:

@Adrian Haha! Thrilled to hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Michael 98145:

thanks, Cliff. i was wondering how that turned out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm Adrian in London:

  3:31pm modchick65:

This Beverly song reminds me a bit of Rilo Kiley from the Blacklight record.
  3:31pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Yeah Michael 98145, they way it turned out was, "we Kiwis can't be bothered, really"
  3:32pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Awwwwwww Bryce!!
Sheila, sending you more virtual hugs xoxoxo
Avatar 3:32pm The Contessa:

Hugging you from afar! xx

The SCOTUS immigration opinion is not as dire as it seems. It merely upheld a *preliminary* injunction to afford time to present a case on the merits.

My favorite passage:

JUDY WOODRUFF: So, can you — so, what can be read into this very brief statement the court made?
  3:34pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

I can't even get a work visa in the UK or Western Europe as an American citizen (and neither can other Anglophone peoples), Eastern Europe is much easier for us
  3:34pm JakeGould:

@TheContessa: Kudos!
  3:35pm modchick65:

I always wanted to live in London. Since I was 12. It's my spiritual home. I lived in France twice, and all I wanted to do during that time was go to London. I can't even believe this. The country I loved is going to be gone.
  3:35pm Cooh John:

Hugs and love to all. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm listener james from westwood:

I don't want to see a world come about where America or Britain blocks future Sheila Bs from beginning a new life in safety and security and sharing their unique and beautiful light with their new fellow citizens.

  3:36pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Sheila, thank you for sharing your personal story and how harrowing it was for your family to have to flee Iran.
Avatar 3:36pm The Contessa:

Thnaks @Jake, they left on donkey back!
  3:37pm modchick65:

@Cliff... Yeah, I tried to get a UK work visa in the 90s, but I couldn't. It was too tough. (And, unfortunately, I was too independent to marry my gay guy friend).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Matt ww:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Michael 98145:

bloop beep!!
  3:38pm P-90:

And may I respectfully submit that maybe Brexit was NOT primarily about "nationalism" or "isolationism", or "xenophobic" immigration issues, rather a rejection of a failed experiment in"Globalization" that was economically disastrous and costing the citizens of member nations too much of their sovereignty and rights to democratic and economic self-determination. The EU: OK in theory, worth a try, but a failure for everyone except the big central banks. History may show that England is leading the way in an inevitable exodus of EU member nations. For reals.
  3:39pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

modchick65 - I've also looked into emigrating to Australia & Canada (even though the latter is COLD), and they don't really want too many Americans either....but at least they're somewhat more welcoming than UK/W.Europe
  3:39pm Davey Croquet:

Oh Sheilla. That was so moving. Our hearts are breaking here in the UK. Something really, really awful has happened and I don't know how we'll ever get back what we've lost.
Avatar 3:40pm Cecile:

Australia doesn't want you if you're not a brain surgeon. It's been that way for years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Rob Kopp:

You have a point, P-90, but Remain and talk about it and try to cange it is better than Brexit
  3:40pm JakeGould:

@P-90: Blah, blah… This is not a good thing. History will prove that since it has historically been the case.

Economic disparity has more to do with the crazy fear of taking the rich if you ask me. And the U.K. leaving the E.U. doesn’t change the fact that Asia is the world’s “factory” nowadays thus disenfranchising the working class all over the world.
Avatar 3:40pm The Contessa:

@P-90, let's hope you're right...
  3:40pm Davey Croquet:

And with respect, P-90, that is absolute nonsense. Brexit was the most xenophobic and racist political campaign in British political history, by some distance. An MP was assassinated and the most hateful opinions I've eve heard in public life were voiced every day. I live in the North of England, trust me, this is a place of great divisions.
  3:41pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

P-90 I largely agree with you, the Eurocrats in Germany/France have been fucking Greece/Spain/etc. up the ass so much since 2009 with their focacta financial policy
  3:41pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: Sad, lovely, heartfelt sentiments. Nice work!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Michael 98145:

@Cecile, can we somehow return Keith Rupert Murdoch ??
  3:42pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

[Apologies for unsophisticated language there folks, just seems to me like this train wreck has been a long time coming]
  3:42pm Dean:

More subtle discussion of U.S. v. Texas: http://www.scotusblog.com/2016/06/opinion-analysis-obama-immigration-plan-all-but-doomed/ So, not pretty, but the game ain't over.

My friend's student visa is up. He's a Commonwealth citizen, but he's scrambling to find a country before his time is gone.

I'm sorry to hear the campaign was so awful. And I am still stunned over the assignation of Jo Clark.
  3:42pm JakeGould:

@Cliff: The word is facata. Focata is a type of Italian pizza bread, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Rob Kopp:

Sorry, Sheila, that we're talking about this in your programme. On the other hand: isn't it great that we do.
Avatar 3:43pm geezerette:

@Davey Croquet: Seconding support for Sheila.
We need voices like yours Sheila. We can all give each other courage.
  3:43pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

JakeGould - sorry, remember you're talking to the guy who puts Nutella on matzo here! Will keep that spelling on file for the future ;)
Avatar 3:43pm Cecile:

Michael, that would be a nice idea.
Avatar 3:44pm Cecile:

My friends were children of immigrants. Their parents were immigrants. I don't understand any of this at all.
  3:44pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Yes, Murdoch is a kind of brain surgeon right? He's performed a lot of telelobotomies on Americans
  3:44pm JakeGould:

@Cliff: Get over it. I think your practice of putting Nutella on matzo is disgusting and vile, but otherwise I respect you as much as I can respect someone I don’t know who puts Nutella on matzo.

In the US of A we are either immigrants, or children of immigrants , or children of children of immigrants, on and on.
  3:45pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

JakeGould actually isn't it facaCta? Heheh. (And you should try it, it's delish)
  3:46pm Cliff (moving to Prague!):

JakeGould you can't even spell Yiddish properly, hit the road Jack!!
  3:46pm JakeGould:

@Cecile: As a first generation American let me explain the problem to you… People who are 3rd generation of a country or longer than that tend to be resentful for the “new” folks. Believe me when I say that the worst bullies I dealt with were other kids with similar economic backgrounds whose parents came to the U.S. decades earlier.

Racism and nationalism is hatred of the new and the disconnect from your own past.
Avatar 3:46pm Cecile:

Bobby Fuller was a monster songwriter, performer and producer. I'm so sad we never got to see the music he would have created.

@Davey C: The CAMPAIGNS run by some entities to raise support for Brexit were absolutely reprehensible for their racist, rabble-rousing tactics. But Britain getting free of the EU is a step in the right direction in the end, regardless of the ugliness of some of the debate about the vote. They're shitting bricks in Brussels already about possibly imminent similar moves by France and Spain, encouraged by Britain's departure. The EU is a ultimately a totalitarian movement, and most Europeans, in the end, are really uncomfortable with that sort of thing. Like, really suspicious and unwilling to submit, deep down.

@Cecile: The "Myra" book is brilliant, funny, worth reading. The movie, even "unbutchered", is a really bizarre attempt by a big Hollywood studio to make what we would now just call an "indie"-type unconventional film. And they had no idea how to do it . But worth seeing for its period flavor and all-around random weirdness.
