wow, very heavy misty morning out there. we had an especially cool night after a muggy day. these fogs remind me of the sci-fi shows in which the city is isolated by the mist, with no knowing of waht is beyond....

this sounds like an old irish ballad.

i had NO idea that "strangers with candy" was written by florrie fisher who was the crying lady who went to high schools to talk about drug use.. ... i just heard this crying and was taken back to that time she came to our school, then saw her on teevee giving that same spiel, almost crying on cue. mike douglas was very sympathetic.

i would say that baha'i philosophy is pretty right on. although any organized religion is just not my thing, even buddhism and quakerism, whose tenets i most often follow, as well as pantheism

Hi Micah, do you have more info on this greek prog band mad of which you played vendetta earlier? really loved it... but searching for 'greek band mad vendetta' or similar returns all sorts but nothing to do with this music :)

@Cliff: Your avatar makes me wonder about Olga: is she from Sakha? The costume looks somewhat familiar...
  8:00am
Cliff:

fred, she's based in Yakutsk, so yeah I think so

Links to discogs! Now I've seen it all. Micah, you make listening to the radio fun (no apologies to Fleetwood Mac's "You Make Lovin Fun").

I've never been there, but I love music from this area, and for a while there were regular shows in Paris (including khomus workshops, though I never tried that)

DaveinPA:

Amazing stuff - keep it coming!
  8:14am
Cliff:

That's cool, I'll have to look up more khomus players, I only know of Olga from Ken's show. Would love to travel around there someday, or Mongolia too.

@Cliff: I found this video of the Kyrgyz variants (a small metal one and a big wooden one): www.youtube.com...
Kyrgyz komuz (a lute) playing can be quite spectacular and entertaining

@Cliff: a classic Kyrgyz video (once posted on the station's blog): www.youtube.com...
  8:44am
melinda:

@annie: that's a good story about the strangers with candy lady. I only learned that there was a real-life inspiration for the characters few years ago.

florrie came to our small-town high school in upstate NY as part of her tour. we had no idea it was nation-wide. it actually makes me want to read more about FF and maybe find her book.i wonder how far from reality the show went. have you ever read jack black's book "You Can't Win"? en.wikipedia.org... NOT the comedian. this book is very very good
  8:55am
melinda:

I haven't read it but I'll look for it. I would guess that the show strayed from reality quite a bit, have you seen it?
Avatar 8:56am
Sem Chumbo:

Micah, it's been another mind-opening jam this am. Thanks so much for airing material I would otherwise have had to live my life without. See you again next time, I hope.
Avatar 8:58am
annie:

well, i really tried a second time to see it.. it's just not to my taste for comedy. i can't put my finger on how it rankled me. maybe it's the actor who played candy. .. not my cup of tea. now i have to read the book..
