Laura Gibson live on WFMU

Live performance and chat with Laura Gibson
After a four-year gap, singer/songwriter Laura Gibson has released "Empire Builder," an album inspired by two major life events. Her main inspiration was the Amtrak train route she took while moving from Oregon to New York. Then after moving to NYC, Gibson lost all her possessions in the East Village building explosion in March of 2015. Laura's music has a simplicity that is emotionally dark and uplifting at the same time. As she describes the resulting album, "The title (Empire Builder) seemed appropriate because it captures a moment right in the middle of a big personal change." Laura Gibson dropped by WFMU to play live.

Avatar 9:02pm Van in DC:

Happy birthday again Irene! Hope your week is progressing well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Irene Trudel:

Thank you Van!
Avatar 9:06pm Van in DC:

So I love these daily chess improvement thingys, and this most recent one is kind of perplexing me. I think it's just a simple Q move to E2 for what looks like mate to me. Must be missing something.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Mike East:

Oh wow, Laura Gibson...really been digging what I've been hearing all over fmu from her. I actually recommended her to my wife a couple weeks ago.
Avatar 9:07pm Van in DC:

Anyways, great Mets game tribute for you Irene. That was awesome.
Avatar 9:10pm Van in DC:

ooooh. The K can escape to G3. Duh. I'm addled.
Avatar 9:14pm Van in DC:

Oh God. Actually I would have just made the worst move possible, ensuring total and utter defeat with that Q move. Boggle. I need more beer.
  9:14pm Jeff Conklin:

Hey Irene,

My father and I tuned in from the Catskills Sitting around the fire and enjoying the show so far.

Avatar 9:15pm Van in DC:

We shall ever wonder what was to play next there ;)
  9:16pm Tommy Haynes:

I live in the Catskills and 90.1 comes in great if you're on high ground, which I am
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Mike, Jeff and Tommy! Glad you're also tunes in. I'm setting up for a set with Laura Gibson, so I'm a little distracted tonight.
Avatar 9:17pm Van in DC:

So, I got my ticket for Samantha Fish appearing here soon. Blues singer / guitarist extraordinaire, incredibly talented! She probably can even play chess much better than me. She's played with Buddy Guy, etc. Just incredible performer. I don't think FMU knows who she is though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, all. Another 90.1 member (when driving) in the house!
  9:18pm JakeGould:

Hey Irene. It’s your birthday again? How did that happen.
  9:19pm Jeff Conklin:

We're outside of Walton and beyond the transmitter,s reach but thankfully I've got cell service and we bought a new Bluetooth-enabled camping radio. No tape deck though :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Ken & Jake. Yep, another year gone again!
  9:20pm Cliff:

Good evening Irene & everyone
Avatar 9:21pm Van in DC:

Irene you should put your Mets tribute up as the picture :)
  9:21pm Cliff:

Oh, and happy birthday Irene!
  9:21pm Tommy Haynes:

I'm in Neversink (near Liberty) in Sullivan CO
Avatar 9:22pm Van in DC:

What a fantastic set this is so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Cliff! Van, I'll just point people to look at my Facebook page if they want to see the picture. My husband Peter put my name up in lights at the Mets game yesterday. www.facebook.com...
  9:24pm Jeff Conklin:

Nice. FM reception where we are is limited unfortunately. Did get the 90.1 signal at Monagup Pond a few years ago
  9:24pm Jeff Conklin:

Happy birthday!
Avatar 9:25pm Van in DC:

Since I can't get on FB I'm glad you had it elsewhere :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Irene Trudel:

Oh, yes, it's also on my Twitter feed @keeptru
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Here is a Flickr shot of it: www.flickr.com... Very nice!
  9:29pm JakeGould:

FWIW, WFMU posted the awesome pic of Irene’s name in lights at Citifield. www.instagram.com...
Avatar 9:29pm Van in DC:

Is that Venus that is so bright and twirling bright red tonight like a light switch off and on? It's gorgeous.
Avatar 9:30pm Van in DC:

Oh wow, awesome, thanks JakeGould!
Avatar 9:31pm Van in DC:

Oh wait. It was a UFO. Never mind.
  9:32pm Asanarama:

Re: The shock of returning to the usual after a long weekend.

Better to have Monday off than Friday. Then you get to ease back into things with a four-day week, so to speak. At least for those whose usual is a Monday thru Friday kind of thing.
Avatar 9:33pm Van in DC:

Laura! Love her! Glad you have her in Irene!
Avatar 9:36pm Van in DC:

Question for Laura: Any upcoming book / novel releases? Has there been one yet that I might have missed?
Avatar 9:38pm Van in DC:

And thankful that Laura was the inspiration behind the creation of NPR's Tiny Desk series, which I love!
  9:40pm Eugene R.:

@Van in DC: You want to move the rook to trap the White king back on the 1st rank. Then it is a matter of swinging the Black queen around to deliver checks until mate.
  9:41pm Cliff:

Yeah, I don't think Venus shows up in red Van in DC, maybe it was Mars?
  9:42pm Cliff:

Or, you know, swamp gas.
Avatar 9:42pm Van in DC:

Probably so :) (@Cliff)

@Eugene - yeah I saw responses along those lines but thought maybe overthinking it? But no, I glossed over it too quickly. Magnus I'm not :)
Avatar 9:46pm Van in DC:

But that's why I love going through these daily improvement exercises in chess ;)
  9:46pm Cliff:

Saw my own UFO last October, it was doing a loop-de-loop around about a 12 arc-minute area in the sky. Very bizarre!
Avatar 9:48pm Van in DC:

wow. I've seen things as well. Like in the middle of nowhere, Texas, a bright light screaming across the skyline then, without slowing down, angling straight up and going into orbit I think, in just seconds. Astonishing speed and change of direction. Impossible stuff.
  9:52pm Cliff:

geezerette told me the other day that years ago she went out to Area 51, and saw 5 green lights go up and down from the ground and sideways - she said it was so absurd to see something with her own eyes that you always hear UFO fanatics on TV talking about :)
Avatar 9:52pm Van in DC:

I thought that when I had a Top Secret / SCI clearance in the black Intel world for well over a decade that I might chance upon, er, proof of some sort, in some way, but even Groom Lake secrets were beyond my reach. (That's "Dreamland", or "Area 51"). Talk about compartment-ed.
  9:53pm Cliff:

Gotta love bureaucracy
Avatar 9:55pm Van in DC:

I had multiple coworkers apply for what's called a "Green Door" assignment to Groom Lake. Every one of them were deserving, every one was denied. They are super selective, and I have no idea what their criteria might be.
Avatar 9:57pm Van in DC:

My favorite NPR Tiny Desk concert moment was when Pat Benatar appeared, with her husband. They did a set and were gearing up to sing Promises In The Dark. They couldn't remember how it started!! It was hilarious. HUGE crowd, and nobody knew! I was screaming at my computer "NEVER AGAIN!" but it took them a while to figure it out. LOL
Avatar 9:59pm Van in DC:

Irene, of course, in case folks didn't know, does Soundcheck engineering for NPR.... another favorite :)
  10:00pm qwerty:

I heard the chorus as surprise! there is no god (or justice) but there are other people. what a survivor she is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Irene Trudel:

Well, thanks Van, although it's actually for WNYC/WQXR that I work. NPR is the network.
Avatar 10:01pm Van in DC:

Technicalities. ;)
Avatar 10:02pm Van in DC:

Meanwhile, really enjoying Laura's set!
  10:07pm jon:

hi irene. incredible as always. your live segments are just amazing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I catch WQXR on their 103.7 frequency once in a while. Small world!
Avatar 10:09pm Van in DC:

I've seen it :)
Avatar 10:11pm Van in DC:

You have a free pass Laura. :)
Avatar 10:13pm Van in DC:

Oh snap, Laura live at Black Cat in DC on July 9...I am so there :) And dragging along new fans...errrr.... music fans with me.
  10:15pm Katie M:

Avatar 10:16pm Van in DC:

Like a caldera associated with a volcano...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Mike East:

Really enjoyed all of that...and this, still
Avatar 10:17pm Van in DC:

Like, the rim? On the edge? Decisions? Things like that...? I think I think too much.
Avatar 10:18pm Van in DC:

Thank you Laura! Fantastic set!! See you in DC.
Avatar 10:21pm Van in DC:

....and wasn't that some pretty amazingly fantastic engineering on that live set? Usual stellar self there Mrs. Trudel. Many thanks to you as well.
  10:26pm KP:

Happy Birthday once more, Irene
  10:28pm KP:

Argh, just missed Laura Gibson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Mike East:

definitely worth a trip to the archive, KP
Avatar 10:31pm Van in DC:

Agreed there
Avatar 10:34pm Van in DC:

Odd song, this. I understand less than half I think :)

Avatar 10:47pm Van in DC:

Avatar 10:48pm Van in DC:

I have a Sandy Denny boxed set....not sure if this is on it, don't remember actually
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:50pm redkayak:

  10:50pm Cliff:

Thanks Irene, catch you next week!
Avatar 10:52pm Van in DC:

Awesome Sandy
Avatar 10:54pm Van in DC:

YES! I have this! CD 3 of Sandy Denny boxed set "A Boxful of Treasures". I thought I did. Love this boxed set!!
Avatar 10:56pm Van in DC:

Most recent rare boxed set I have gotten was Fleetwood Mac / Stevie Nicks thing. Pretty incredible.
Avatar 11:01pm Van in DC:

Actually, just the 53-page glossy 5 x oh, 12 inch booklet insert in Sandy's boxed set is well worth the cost of the entire CD boxed set. It is absolutely incredible. Rare photos, and so much more.
Avatar 11:08pm Scraps deSelby:

Joel Forrester is a great songwriter, and a friend. Joel and Phillip -- also a great songwriter -- were (and lately, are again) a doubled-headed leader of the awesome Microscopic Septet
Avatar 11:13pm Scraps deSelby:

The Microscopic Septet is putting out a new album this year, I've Been Up So Long It Looks Like Down To Me: The Micros Play The Blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Irene Trudel:

Van, I think the other box set is sadly out of print. This new collection is mostly old things with new demos by The Bunch. Scraps, Joel and Phillip are some of my favorite people, and damn great musicians. My hubby Peter and I just saw them with the Micros at The Owl. Oh, and goodnight Cliff!
Avatar 11:17pm Scraps deSelby:

If I were still in New York, I would definitely have been there. Snif.
Avatar 11:17pm Van in DC:

well check your twitter and see if that's the same one :)
  11:25pm KP:

Monkeeing around tomorrow, Irene?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Irene Trudel:

Afraid not this time, KP. We didn't move fast enough on tickets.
Avatar 11:34pm Van in DC:

Well, about to crash for the evening Irene. At lest I finally made it back for the start of the show again lol. Will catch up tomorrow. So many thanks for a fantastic effort and wonderful presentation this evening! Loved it. You have tweet. :)
Avatar 11:39pm Scraps deSelby:

Peter Knight has at least a second album, The Gemini Cadenza
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm Irene Trudel:

Good to know, Scraps! I was actually at the recording session for that tune, "An Ancient Cause." Always loved that tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm Mike East:

Grand show this evenin' Miss Irene...'specially that Laura Gibson bit. What a talent!
Avatar 11:48pm Scraps deSelby:

Wow, neat, Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Mike and Van and Scraps and KP and everybody else. Signing off comments for the evening. Catch you all next week!
  12:00am KP:
