Lighter fluid?
🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:33am tadpoles:

Try "Goo Gone" Joe. Let a little sit for a couple of minutes. I use it to get stickers off LP jackets without damage. Cheers
  9:34am Brendan:

Hi Joe good morning. I feel your tape pain. Getting rid of tape , hmmm. Didn't Nixon recommend the fireplace?
  9:35am Polyus:

Lighter fluid was what I used to use for getting price tags off. But yeah, Goo Gone does the same thing.
  9:35am paul:

Dude, where's my premium?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am SSS:

Yes yes Joe...you are right to be cautious...to prevent what is called crazing, which are small cracks developing in plastics from exposure to improper or non compatible solvents, test on an expendable CD. Also beware of the circumference of the disk, which is a seal between the two halves of the thing. Test on an expendable one! Goo Gone will surely cause crazing in my opinion.
Avatar 9:37am Joe McG:

Thanks for all of your suggestions, guys! @Paul: We're starting to send out stuff this week, Paul. It's a long process here at volunteer-staffed WFMU.
  9:38am Brendan:

Yea! Squirt the CD with lighter fluid , ignite it and hump it against an amplifier ala Hendrix until it emits feedback.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am SSS:

I am an industrial designer, and for a time worked for a guy in Mount Vernon building CD mastering machines, from the glass masters right thru the pressings. He even had a digital to tape studio...neat stuff.

Cool. Much appreciated, Joe.

On a serious note perhaps low heat to warm the adhesive and then a straight lift, Followed by rubbing alcohol.

I've never set fire to a CD, but I have put one through the paper shredder.

Here is a non solvent possibility...try olive oil...let it sit a bit and rub gently...(always rub anything gently)

@Brian: That's a wonderful picture you just painted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am doctorjazz:

That Sweet Jane was great.
(CD's do get dirty and scratch, as we've noted).
As for Software for listening to FMU on line, is it for a phone? I usually use the pop up (it locks up periodically), for my phone use Neutron (it's an Android phone), haven't had playback issues with it and it sounds better than the direct link on the app (I go to the site and play the 128k MP3).
From the Geek end of things...
  10:26am melinda:

Don't hear Terry Allen too often. Nice.
  10:28am Alex:

No, I'm on PC, but thanks for your reply, I was concerned about my android too. Listening to it using pop up is not the best options, but I will use it for the time being, thank you!

@melinda: Glad to see this reissue!

Re reading the CDs, you're doing the right thing. As with movies, skip the trailers until afterward.
Avatar 10:38am Joe McG:

@Kurt: Ha ha ha!
Avatar 10:39am βrian:

Alex, I use iTunes which isn't particularly well designed. But just for playing mp3 streams, it works fine.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 10:42am Uncle Michael:

I'll plug the use of Tunein Radio for WFMU. It works great for me, and I spent months working with them to get our listings and shcedule beaten into some kind of shape.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am northguineahills:

Huh, I don't think I've heard anything from Marshall Crenshaw I've liked. Glad to be proven wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am doctorjazz:

My office PC only has Windows Media Player, and I can't add anything to the PC (the player won't play the 128 files). Pretty much leaves me with the pop-up here. At home the player I like is JRiver, though I mostly stream from an iPad to a Bluetooth speaker (DeepBlue2) (more geekiness...)
Avatar 10:46am Marc Francis:

Loving it Joe!!!! My Surface Noise birthday show!!!!
Avatar 10:46am Joe McG:

Happy birthday, Marc!
  10:47am Brendan:

I use the WFMU app but I'll second that - the TuneIn app is good and the TuneIn Pro lets you record streams.
Avatar 10:47am Marc Francis:

Thank you!
Avatar 10:51am Joe McG:

Next up: Something for all of you Bob Dylan fans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am fred:

The pop-up player is pretty good, especially for archives. I'm stuck with the bloated iTunes at work, which is why I don't listen as much as I used to from there
Avatar 10:52am Jim Devoid:

I have to admit that I discovered Plastic Bertrand by watching early 00's Scooby Doo with my kid...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am doctorjazz:

Happy Birthday @Marc! Mine is in 2 days (celebrating it at the dentist...)
Avatar 10:54am βrian:

Strangely, I found myself singing "Ça Plane Pour Moi" last night as I chopped onions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am MattZ:

Am I the only Bob Dylan fan who doesn't like Desire? (this does sound great on 45 though)
  10:54am paul:

1975 was a good year for Bob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am annie:

i generally use the pop-up for fmu, including the archives. OZ has an embedded player, too. most other stations i use TuneIn. if a station HAS a player i use it until it kicks out, then i switch to tune-in. only issue i have is that Firefox kicks me off the internet now and then and i have to reboot the whole shebang. the Ipod has been relegated to the sewing room stereo system.
Avatar 10:56am Marc Francis:

Thanks @doctorjazz! Keep your head up dentist wise!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am coelacanth:

MattZ, no. i do consider desire his last tolerable album, but i only like a few tracks on it. (just the year prior he did blood on the tracks so there was still hope, after all.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am MattZ:

coelacanth- i dont know, it just sounds like a giant cheesefest to me. I like cheesefests as much as the next guy, but desire never worked for me. And I think there are plenty of tolerable albums post-Desire, but probably not until Oh Mercy. I know that's a cliche at this point, but if you subscribe to the general theory, then I stop at BOTT, not Desire. Anyway, carry on everyone.
  11:07am melinda:

Did someone else cover Western Union Desperate?
Avatar 11:11am V Priceless:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am fred:

A coworker was part of Jarre's China tour in the 80's. He keeps bringing that up, so I suffer from Jarre fatigue
  11:12am paul:

@coelacanth, BOTT was released in 1975
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am coelacanth:

Matt, we're nearly on the same page. i did use the word "tolerable"! -and i know that could be because of familiarity, as i bought it upon release. i was quite young and every album was an investment, so i tried hard to like it (+ there was lots of hype about it at the time.)
looking at the track list now, i don't even recognise most of them.
i still like "isis" though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am coelacanth:

paul, yes. desire was '76. (each recorded the previous year.)
  11:15am Brendan:

I wonder if Matty Grove was derivative of Shady Grove or vice versa?
  11:15am paul:

Disregard my last comment. Thought Desire was from 1975, too.
  11:16am wild neil:

Fairport Convention...a song about adultery? cool...they are interesting...kinda prog folk like pentangle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am fred:

@coelacanth: you should be more careful, really. Saying "I still like Isis" might bring unwanted attention
Avatar 11:16am Joe McG:

@Brendan: I'd think vice versa, but same roots!
  11:16am paul:

No love for Infidels?
  11:19am Brendan:

Yea Joe I thought I heard Shady Grove in the tune, and it originates from the much older Matty Groves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am coelacanth:

fred, i know. that sucks!
...a regular poster here said once that it's a shame they ruined a perfectly good goddess.
  11:20am KP:

Richard Thompson bending and twisting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am coelacanth:

paul, i can't say i know "infidels". i've heard it, and didn't like it at that time; but things change. i've never heard "oh mercy" either. i'd thoroughly lost interest in Dylan by then. who knows? maybe i'd like one or both of them now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am coelacanth:

this song's beautiful.
  11:23am Woodchipper:

Wow - though this intro was "Small Blue Thing" by Suzanne Vega...! VEeeerrrryyy. simila...Hmmm......
  11:24am audrey:

i agree ^
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am northguineahills:

Matty Groves is a very old English folk song. Cecil Sharp gathered a few versions, and the Lomaxes found a few versions in Appalachia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am doctorjazz:

Nice bookends to the show, more folk rock now, been enjoying it.
Avatar 11:26am Sem Chumbo:

Oh, boy. Steeleye Span, following Fairport. Joe, you closet folkie, you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am fred:

A few years ago, my wire transfer to the station was held up because I had bought a record from Yair Yona's band. If that's security, we"re in deep shit
Avatar 11:27am Joe McG:

@Sem: It's funny, but whenever I play Fairport, I get requests for Steeleye, so I thought, what the hell, today I'm going to take care of that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am doctorjazz:

Richard Thompson did a nice guest spot on the Joan Baez Public TV tribute/fund raiser, played some nice acoustic lead and Joan did one of his songs with him (She never Could Resist a Winding Road, if I remember correctly)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am annie:

steeleye span played as intro to procol harem way back in the early 70s in cleveland. I WAS THERE!! been a fan ever since. 3 encores they did, compared to PH's one

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am doctorjazz:

I also saw Jackson Browne on the show, as well as Paul Simon (who has lost a step, at least on the show, seemed to play a step behind everyone), Judy Collins was also on.
Avatar 11:35am Joe McG:

@ngh: I think I got a CD copy of "On the Shore" through Amazon for about 10 bucks a few years ago. Maybe still available?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am coelacanth:

paul, it's decided! i lost track of Bowie during a phase that i disliked; only to decide -2 days before he died - that i need to check out some of his stuff that i'd ignored all those years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Mike East:

Joan Baez rehearsed with us for that concert I think. I wonder if Richard Thompson was in the studio and I missed him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am doctorjazz:

Joan Baez was great, by the way...
Still looks and sounds young! Still has that activist spirit.
