Afternoon, Liz!
  12:23pm Polyus:

Rolling Stone covered the record fair!
Avatar 12:24pm mark r:

Uh, not to nitpick, but the past tense of "swing" is "swang," i.e. "Thanks to everyone who SWANG by the Record Fair." You're welcome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Ken From Hyde Park:

God kveld, Bjarne. How are things going for you today?
Avatar 12:27pm JakeGould:

Swang this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm chris:

a swang has a tree on one end and a tahr on 'tother
Avatar 12:31pm coelacanth:

you're nitpicking... and "swung" is perfectly proper in that context.
Avatar 12:32pm coelacanth:

(okay, not perfectly, but acceptably)
Avatar 12:32pm Dr. Goot:

I'm swinging to this set.
  12:35pm wanna bet?:

For the verb: "to swing"
Simple Past: swung
Past Participle: swung
  12:37pm djelrock:

Havent heard Les Tontons Macoutes in ages. Txs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Cliff:

I've been saying "swong" all these years. Is that wrung?
Avatar 12:39pm Cheri Pi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

You mean "swinged" is not the right word? Aye!
Avatar 12:40pm mark r:

Oh coel, I'm just having a little fun at the exhausted DJ's expense. Of course you're right. But swang SHOULD be a word, darn it. Once when Dizzy Dean was doing color commentary on a ballgame, he said, "He SLUD into third base." In his accent, it sounded correct. He also burst into a few bars of "The Wabash Cannonball," if memory serves. Baseball is slow-moving enough for the commentators to sing songs, read poems and play a game of chess in between pitches.
Avatar 12:42pm JakeGould:

Avatar 12:43pm JakeGould:

For a second I thought the band name was “Inflamed Burritos.”
Avatar 12:44pm coelacanth:

Cliff haha!
mark, "slud"! that's classic!
...it could be so simple if all past tense words were just suffixed with "ed". no more tears.

i know "stupider" is not proper, but it's commonly used and it makes sense; and it WILL be proper, eventually...but then in the context it's likely to be used it might just backfire.

Man, Samuel Johnson was a real bellyacher: "Every other authour may aspire to praise; the lexicographer can only hope to escape reproach and even this negative recompense has been yet granted to very few."
Avatar 1:06pm coelacanth:

re: @12:57, 'you ever read Gabriel García Márquez? i finished "autumn of the patriarch" a few weeks ago. at some point i decided to count the sentences in the text. i started putting a light pencil line on any page that a sentence ends on, but i haven't counted yet. there's certainly at least twice as many pages as there are sentences!

Avatar 1:18pm Cecile:

Pascal Manzarek you mean.
Avatar 1:19pm herb.nyc:

hi all. In ref to song lyrics (co-pays? I love it.), band BOYFRIENDS (opening for TACOCAT at mercury lounge) said “this song is about robbing banks (pause) and being cool”. I had to laugh.
Avatar 1:20pm herb.nyc:

and i see the WORDS tawk in the thread, and reminds me of a Vonnegut book that had a character named Hoobler. there was a Hoobler at work. i used to say "hoobler, he who or that which hoobles.".
Avatar 1:28pm coelacanth:

which Vonnegut book, herb? He's one of my favorites, along with the aforementioned García Márquez, but i've only read about 1/2 his books.
Avatar 1:30pm InBrkly:

That would be Breakfast of Champions. I don't think it was one of his better books.
Avatar 1:35pm coelacanth:

Thanks. considering that i may not live forever, and there are many other, non-Vonnegut books to read, i maybe won't read every one after all... what are you're favorites?
Avatar 1:35pm herb.nyc:

yes, it WAS b'fast of chumps. that's the only vonnegut i've ever read. i should read more. now reading a 25cent hardbk from nypl sale, "somebody's gotta tell it", journalism memoir of village voice's (and more) Jack Newfield. his coverage of '68 prez race and RFK is not-put-down-able; same with daily news strike of 1989. i've a library hold on Ted Rall's "snowden", and i just picked up "citizen4" docu from mulberry branch of nypl. (it's that time of year when nypl is asking us to write letters to city hall. i did 2.)
Avatar 1:38pm coelacanth:

hmm, i might read "snowden".
Avatar 1:38pm InBrkly:

It has been a good 20 years since I've read any Vonnegut so it is hard to make a recommendation. I recall that many of his books are quite short and I read most of them over one summer. I think I liked Sirens of Titan best.
Avatar 1:40pm InBrkly:

I think Breakfast was famous because he wrote it while taking LSD to test the hypothesis that it made you more creative. But I was just checking google and havent found confirmation.
Avatar 1:41pm InBrkly:

But all of his books left some impression on me. Sometimes phrases from his writing will just pop into my head weird moments.
Avatar 1:42pm herb.nyc:

wasn't vonnegut's wife also a writer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Bjarne:

Ken from hyde park: Things are going great for me today. The sun is shining and summer is just around the corner, and WFMU on the air! Hope you are doing good aswell. Are you by any chance traveling to Barcelona for Primavera Festival at the end of may?
I know Liz is going, and I'm looking forward to meeting her, the rest of the WFMU Primavera crew.
Avatar 1:44pm coelacanth:

cool. after reading whatever titles i had at my disposal i planned to read the rest in chronological order, from his first. i had to special-order "player piano"; "sirens of titan" happens to be next!
Avatar 1:45pm InBrkly:

He remarried. I dont recall that either wife was a writer but his son wrote a book about his experience with sushizophrenia. It wasn't great but it was an interesting snapshot of life in a hippy commune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Michael 98145:

Cat's Cradle made a big impression on me, but that was long, long ago. I also just purchased Player Piano to re-read.
Avatar 1:46pm InBrkly:

I hope that strategy works! Some writers take a couple of books to "get their legs". Player piano and Bluebeard are the only 2 I haven't read.
Avatar 1:47pm InBrkly:

lol sushizophrenia. /schizophrenia/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Cliff:

I suffer from sushizophrenia, I just can't resist an eel roll
Avatar 1:49pm coelacanth:

player piano was good, but yes- he hadn't gotten his stride yet. Bluebeard is one of my favorite books by anybody!
Avatar 1:50pm InBrkly:

Hmm since Vonnegut is rolling around my head now--I was just thinking how in many of his books he uses drawings or symbols mixed in with the typography. I wonder how they handle that in the ebooks.

Maybe they have a Vonnegut typeface. I'd like to have that.
Avatar 1:51pm coelacanth:

Michael, "cat's cradle" has been recommended to me several times, so i'm fairly psyched to get to that one.
Avatar 1:52pm InBrkly:

This isn't really a spoiler I hope but in Galapagos he straight up tells you at the beginning that he is going to put a little star next to the name of everyone who is going to die by the end. For some reason that put a lot of pressure on me as a reader!
Avatar 1:52pm herb.nyc:

i just googled the descrip of BLUEBEARD, and it mentions a sexy woman meeting older man. yeah, i could go for that (and it's kinda Dave Hill-ian, in ref to SHIT HAPPENS' spokesmodel Becky Boggs and her destined meeting with dave.)
  1:53pm ?:

I always thought Slapstick was a good introduction. But maybe that's just because it was the first KV that I read.
Avatar 1:56pm InBrkly:

If you are reading these chronologically you might not be able to stop! You just might read them all straight through!
Avatar 1:57pm coelacanth:

slapstick IS a good introduction! it was mine too and it's one of my 3 faves, so far. Galapagos is the other; and at first that asterisk thing bothered me, because it was like Vonnegut was the spoiler! then our eyes met, i guess, because it somehow enhanced the tale.
Fucking Brilliant he was.
Avatar 1:58pm InBrkly:

Sadly, like PK Dick, he is doomed to never have a good movie adaptation made.
Avatar 1:59pm JakeGould:

Chip tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Ĩkє:

Other songs about co-pays:
Goatpuncher, "ACA POS"
Chunky Nuns, "$35 Abortion"
Slab of Morbier, "Hypnotoad Treats All Ailments"
Avatar 2:00pm coelacanth:

that's a shame; but i guess i can feel okay about having never seen a Vonnegut-based movie then.
  2:01pm ?:

i think that last song was a good adaptation of a PKD book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Liz Berg:

Haha, thanks Ike! Found one about a dental plan I'll play in a bit...
Avatar 2:02pm JakeGould:

@Ike: Glad you are here! You know they are going to be bringing weed eating goats into Prospect Park? So please don’t punch them!
Avatar 2:02pm JakeGould:

@Liz: Can there be a whole show devoted to songs about mundane, daily bureaucracy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Cliff:

Don't google "Chunky Nuns", btw - I regretted it (regrotted? regrut?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm 1ke:

Of course all of those titles only came out on Edison cylinders in northeastern Westeros in print runs of -3, so you may not be able to find them.
  2:06pm djelrock:

Very nice. They sound like Makiza from Chile.
Avatar 2:08pm herb.nyc:

"mundane daily bureaucracy" kinda sorta reminds me of The Trachtenburg Family Slide Show Players (oh look, i wore their pin 2 days ago).
Avatar 2:08pm Sem Chumbo:

Gotta stay out of the Vonnegut discussion, read them all in order at the time they were published. OCD can be useful;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Michael 98145:

Y'know, once upon a time they had listening booths in the hi-fi stores; now i come to WFMU.
  2:09pm bzam708:

Nice set, there's sg.o much music on FMA that I'll never get around to hearin
Avatar 2:09pm herb.nyc:

i tell my friends of FMA, but i have never clicked on any of the songs. ugh.
Avatar 2:10pm herb.nyc:

(back to WORDS - i typed clicked and i often will misread it as dicked)
Avatar 2:10pm coelacanth:

Liz, the whole program's been Stellar...especially the punkrock; and the electric mbira sounding stuff; and the other stuff!
i've got to head out. 'got some hoobling on the agenda.

@Bjarne - Not planning on going to Primavera Sound. I'll be following the WFMU broadcast, though. Enjoy the festivities!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Liz Berg:

A very melancholy song about dental plans, heh! Dental plans are usually kind of sucky and depressing so the mood is fitting.
Avatar 2:20pm herb.nyc:

will you play any Dentists upbeat pop songs, Liz?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Liz Berg:

Last time I was at the dentist, the playlist was all about Billy Joel. Talk about needing anesthesia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Michael 98145:

Maybe i need this one: www.amazon.com...
Avatar 2:24pm Jeff:

OMG, Liz is playing Holmes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Cliff:

Dear God, at my old workplace they had a radio tuned to an easy listening station, and I swear they must've had a daily Billy Joel quota they had to fill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Liz Berg:

Yikes, Cliff, that sounds like torture!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Cliff:

That was one in a long list of reasons for quitting!
Avatar 2:28pm herb.nyc:

i'd love to see Billy Joel at MSG; never seen him before. however, feel free to put him down on this chatboard. (i've not listened to much Best Show, tho i download the podcasts. one has Jon Wurster saying "how punk the GLASS HOUSES record is, and angry. with that leather jacket and rock throwing, full of punk anarchy!"). hilarious.
Avatar 2:30pm TDK60:

Punk rock Bo Diddley...plunk chunk chunk-a-gunk gunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Cliff:

I actually don't mind Billy Joel in small doses, but having to listen to him every 90 minutes is a bit much. Especially when they only had about 15 of his songs in rotation.
