Hey Scott. Thanks for playing that OTE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Scott Williams:

Hey MattClarke! Might hit more, so much magic in there
  3:08pm Listener Robert:

I'm noticing a pattern here: Between this & "Drink It Up", Negativland paid a lot of att'n to beverages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Good good! No rush.

I have recently become addicted to Fentiman's sodas. They taste like fancy herbal non-alcoholic cocktails.

I can't usually listen to this show live. what a treat!

what I meant to say was "long time listener, first time commenter"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Scott Williams:

Welcome Kirk! Glad you can beer hear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Cliff:

Hi Scott! Always loved the crowd nosies at the end of that one :D
Avatar 3:28pm Cecile:

Controversy might be Prince's nuttiest album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Scott Williams:

BEST! Also Dirty Mind - ever notice they start exactly the same way?
Avatar 3:30pm Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Scott, and all. Boss first 30 minutes, Boss:-O
Avatar 3:30pm Cecile:

I have a soft spot for those two. I think I heard 1999 and afterward way way way too much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 3:32pm Cecile:

both Michael Jackson and Prince had the occasional good parenting advice.

Prince cavorting with muppets: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 3:34pm Cecile:

I didn't know this, but Prince loved his Chapelle sketch - even took a still from the video for the cover of a single. That makes me smile.
Avatar 3:36pm Cecile:

Avatar 3:37pm northguineahills:

Wow, that's awesome, Cecile!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Oh my God I don't think I've heard this in 20+ years…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Cliff:

OMG that single cover, hahaha
Avatar 3:37pm Cecile:

I guess he loved re-tweeting fan memes about him, too.
Avatar 3:38pm Cecile:

I re-watched that and the Rick James episode.
I forgot how amazing Chapelle's show was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Scott Williams:

"Breakfast Can Wait" is also a killer jam, and it's in the q so hang...
Avatar 3:39pm Cecile:

awesome. I think I'll cook up some imaginary pancakes.
Avatar 3:39pm Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Ĩkє:

I like most Prince, but "D&P" always really bugged me on top-40 radio back in the day. But hey, at least it's kinky by 90s top-40 standards (boy OR a girl).
Avatar 3:41pm Cecile:

this is hilarious.
Is it supposed to be?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The "Playa Haters' Ball" sketch was another good one from Chappelle. www.cc.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Private Presley:

Prince as Citizen Kane?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Scott Williams:

it's Bill Callahan, of course it's supposed to be hilarious
  3:49pm khd:

looks like he didn't have a good sense of humor about that one:

"Legend has it that Prince approached Callahan after a (Smog) performance in Minneapolis and presented him with a slander lawsuit. The two settled out of court, although the details of the settlement are unclear (it's believed that Callahan can no longer perform the song live). "Part of the settlement was that I was not to discuss [any details] in the press," says Callahan. "
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Ike:

Oh yeah, now that's the stuff.
Avatar 3:52pm Cecile:

wow, watching the playa haters ball made me a little sad, RIP Patrice O'Neal.
  3:52pm Ashok:

What a shame if that's true. That was a beautiful, admiring tribute to hia colossal drive, talent, focus, and passion. Also, smog is great. I wish I'd thought of that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Scott Williams:

yeah, I think it's a loving tribute. of course a sweet guitar track is better than an orgy! ...uh, right?
  3:54pm khd:

@Ashok - agreed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm chris:

thanks for red-lining the funk-o-meter, Scott! wait... er, purple-lining the funk-o-meter, i guess...

  4:00pm Agent Peter:

Now it begins?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Greg from ZONE 5:

He was only 5-foot-3, but girls could not resist his stare…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Scott Williams:

Haaaa Pablo Princecasso
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Power Papi:

Prince died on the Queen's birthday. It's a conspiracy, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Therese:

Pablo Princecasso was never called an asshole. Not in Minneapolis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Haha! That's amazing. Game, set, match: Negativland.
Avatar 4:14pm geezerette:

It's true about that stare. Who can resist the experience of really being SEEN by someone? It just doesn't happen that often.
Avatar 4:14pm Cecile:

pour some yak milk in the gutter for Prince.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm Scraps deSelby:

Yeah, Prince was not known for a sense of humor about himself. Denied permission for Weird Al using his songs, for instance (as opposed to Michael Jackson, who welcome the use of his sets).

Loved Prince. sigh....
Avatar 4:17pm Cecile:

I think he had a sense of humor, but his sense of control was maybe stronger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Scraps deSelby:

Maybe that's more it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm common:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hmm...no leftover pancakes in his fridge. I must therefore assume he ate them all at the time they were made.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm mrdonutsu:

Here we go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Bas NL:

Hi Scott! Harmonia.. nice! ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Parq:

I hadn't known about Lyons, and so I've been ignoring my workload and reading up on what I've missed in the past four days. Here's a particularly good piece I found, with details about the creation of both "Xianity is Stupid" and the David Brom hoax. (The David Brom murder, it seems, really happened. It was only the connection to "Xianity Is" that was a hoax).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm mrdonutsu:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Rich in Washington:

I had just found an actual copy of that hard to find rare Estus Pirkle LP just a couple of months ago.
Avatar 4:45pm Fredericks:

This Orchestra of Spheres is delightful, Scott.
Avatar 4:50pm Sem Chumbo:

"They should put Prince on the 20 dollar bill and call it $19.99. It will be the bill formerly known as twenty." via The Burning Platform.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Parq:

Sem, dig it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm chris:

i've been thinking alot about Prince's over zealous control of his music, lately. i have two thoughts - 1) he was ahead of his time in controlling his brand (or perhaps took a cue from the Beatles) anyway, when one's brand is oneself, it may frequently get weird 2) perhaps he was economically abused one too many times by folks in the industry? please discuss or ignore as you see fit, wonderful people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Carmichael:

"If you don't own your masters, your masters own you." Can't remember who said that.
Avatar 5:01pm Joe B:

i don't find it overzealous at all. maybe if more major artists took his stance there might be some respect and value left for music. and perhaps other content (like people being aghast when a pro photog watermarks or pulls their work)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm chris:

good point, Joe.
Avatar 5:03pm geezerette:

chris: Agree he was very far ahead. I admire him for keeping his music off Spotify etc.,(although you can watch on youtube).
Avatar 5:03pm coelacanth:

greetings Scott and all
- Thanks for the negativland earlier.
Avatar 5:04pm Cecile:

I think there is a balance, but I am surprised by the reaction I get from people when I make a point of crediting them for their work. Or I actually pay for fonts or pictures.
Avatar 5:04pm Joe B:

Prince's music is on Tidal, it's on itunes etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I don't mind it a bit when an artist or band demands that a politician stop using a song at a rally without permission.
Avatar 5:05pm geezerette:

Cecile,what kind of reaction?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm Michael 98145:

@Cecile, that could be because you are a decent human being. Just sayin.
Avatar 5:07pm Cecile:

sometimes a surprised "wow that is cool"
And other times, "why would you pay money for that?
Avatar 5:09pm coelacanth:

i don't think Bruce Springsteen tried to stop reagan from using "born in the usa" in his campaign. he did, however, publicly state that he didn't thing reagan had listened to it.
Avatar 5:09pm Cecile:

my favorite era of Madonna.
Avatar 5:11pm Joe B:

The news industry has been giving their shit away for years online and now we are stuck with amateur hour (patch, 'aggregates') instead of woodward and bernstein. unfortunately we are headed down the same path for music artists
Avatar 5:12pm geezerette:

Wow Cecile,we are living in such a strange time. Sometimes actual life looks like a graphic novel;familiar but off a degree or two.

Joe B.: Thanks for mentioning Tidal, new to me.
Avatar 5:12pm Joe B:

Reagan did ask to use it and was politely turned down
Avatar 5:13pm Cecile:

a common and unfortunate attitude is that everyone wants someone to pay them, but they're not willing to pay others
Avatar 5:13pm geezerette:

Visual art is a long way down that road Joe B..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm chris:

"the news industry gave their shit away for free... you won't believe what happened next."
Avatar 5:13pm Whosondephone:

Yeah Baby
Avatar 5:14pm Cecile:

Joe B., it's gotten to the point where even in reputable sites I'm not sure it's a news article or "sponsored content"
Avatar 5:14pm Joe B:

exactly Chris.

by the way, Mondale tried to get involved with bruce also in 1984 and was rebuffed.
Avatar 5:15pm Joe B:

unfortunately cecile I have seen that de-evolution from the inside
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm chris:

these some great tunes, Scott!
Avatar 5:16pm coelacanth:

yeah. i respect Springsteen for respecting himself enough to not get involved with politics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh - everything is sponsored content. Even this (by us).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Michael 98145:

This is nice. Not familiar with Rangda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:17pm chris:

coelacanth, i was thinking more along the lines that Bruce's tunes are already political and should be protected from being assigned some sort of party alignment
Avatar 5:17pm Joe B:

The Boss had changed his tune by 2004 - Vote for change tour
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm Scott Williams:

Rangda is Sun City Girls' Rick Bishop, with Ben Chasny (6 Organs of Admittance) and Chris Corsano on drums
Avatar 5:18pm Joe B:

Bruce did have some great quote about Ronnie, something like, I don't think he's heard the Nebraska album.
Avatar 5:18pm Joe B:

i didn't know Think of Me was a single. b-side perhaps?
Avatar 5:20pm Cecile:

Joe, most of the best investigative journalists I know are writing for business publications. Investors want to know the dirt on where the money goes. They might be the only ones.
Avatar 5:21pm Cecile:

holiday was re-released in '85 with Think of me on the B-side.
  5:21pm Felipe:

GREAT SHOW! (need to get me some Jibóla!)
Avatar 5:21pm Joe B:

i think you're right. it really sucks to lose that on a local and state level, especially when some bogus bond deal is pushed through to build a stadium no one wants or needs
Avatar 5:22pm Joe B:

ah, thanks re madonna. i didn't recall that one on a single
Avatar 5:22pm Cecile:

right on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm Scott Williams:

Think of Me is the B-side to "Borderline", '83
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm common:

r.i.p. eddie watkins of polvo. sorry if this has already been said here. but sad. great band. great drummer.
Avatar 5:23pm coelacanth:

chris, i agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Scott Williams:

Funny, Joe B & Cecile, I actually meant to bring "Holiday" & play the b-side to that - but I forget what it is!
Avatar 5:24pm Joe B:

I know it ... it's I know it! (i think)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Scott Williams:

HA! Yes, you're right Joe B - of course you are!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Harry Shearer has had a couple good Investigative Reporting shows this month:
- one on Trump by a Pulitzer Prize winner, & one on the true history of our endless wars in the Middle East. They are kind of interviews w/ Authors about their Books...The whole Trump thing is a symptom of the death of Investigative Reporting. Seen in historical perspective like that - it's jawdropping...I guess getting the dope on things used to Sell - but it doesn't anymore...Of course, the Republican Revolution & then the Tea Party signed away the Fairness Act, any FCC regulations on how many papers or stations the 1% can own - &tc. ...& - a President named Clinton helped (the 'New Democrats')....
Avatar 5:35pm coelacanth:

Thanks Scott. 'gotta go.
ciao peeps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...there's New Media economics - but Politics made a difference too...
Avatar 5:39pm TDK60:

Hi Scott: I dig the Rangda. And nice to know there's some new old Harmonia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Scott Williams:

Sometimes i'm so jealous of musicians' imagination.. take this track by Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides.. wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm chris:

good insight there, RevRab!
Avatar 5:47pm geezerette:

Joe B.,Cecile,Rev Rab 'n all;
Not just stadiums no one wants but the rampant destruction of entire city cultures by "Developers" from who knows where?(China & others) There is absolutely no protection. Flint,Detroit and Nola were eye-openers. The set is being struck and what's behind should not have been surprising.
Avatar 5:49pm TDK60:

Some mega condo project is going in in Bushwick and most locals don't like it. (Old Rheingold beer site.)
Avatar 5:51pm geezerette:

Sad man,it's sad,unimaginative & insensitive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Michael 98145:

Speaking of fire, here's an entertaining site: www.searchquotes.com...
Avatar 5:51pm geezerette:

Love the Funk though!
Avatar 5:51pm northguineahills:

@TDK: Yeah, I know that spot, there are too many condo spots going up all over Bushwick. My rent has gone up 33% in the last 3 years, and I don't believe my place has been renovated in since the early 90s (and that's a generous estimate)
Avatar 5:56pm northguineahills:

Thanks Scott!
