  Fri. 4/15/16 3:27pm P-90:

H&O did do lot of very "coverable" songs. I was lucky to catch them live a couple of times in their heyday. Most of their records relied so much on studio contrivances that when they toured with their band and played those songs in live arrangements, it was like they were "covering" their own songs anyway!

Rona's book is the kind where you go to a publisher with a fool-proof title, and they pounce. But the actual text is a bunch of ho-hum filler. Cosmopolitan mag style.

Maybe they relied on folks seeing it being read on subways, park benches, etc., and then running out to buy it. Do that 30,000 times and you've beaten the odds.

@Sheila: That's the idea: the title is the whole point. Follow Jake's link to Amazon, you can see they printed the title in the biggest, poppingest black letters, filling the cover almost to the edges. Rona was one smart lady, she understood promotion bigtime.

How could one -not- sing karaoke to this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/15/16 4:41pm Evan From Seattle:

We have the best karaoke night here in Seattle. It's not like that, which would be awesome, but it has all sorts of stuff you would never think of. Never in a million years did I think I'd be able to sing Archers of Loaf, Pavement, and a ton of Tom Waits at karaoke, but there it was.

@Evan: Took me 46 years but I finally sang karaoke for the first time with a bunch of tipsy copy editors at a conference a week & change ago. "Love Will Tear Us Apart." (I have like a quarter-octave range.)
Avatar Fri. 4/15/16 4:44pm Honeybear:

I'd be curious as to where one does Japanese karaoke in this city, actually (with or without the 60+ crowd getting tanked on sake)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/15/16 4:46pm chris:

thirsty for sake now for sure. a nice cold daiginjo...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 4/15/16 4:46pm Evan From Seattle:

@listener James that was the second one i ever did. The first one was the passenger haha. i didn't expect to have as much fun doing it as i did. i was hooked after that. There are a few places here where you can get the karaoke rooms, but i've never done those.

Hey Sheila, I am a bit new listener of yours, playing back you shows from your first show time to time.
  Fri. 4/15/16 4:55pm P-90:

Really hoping Enka Time will be a regular SBB feature! If you like, I could put you in touch with my Enka professor at Columbia. He has one of the largest stateside collections of Enka 45's and knows a lot of Enka history and lore.

Love the show SHEILA B!
Avatar    Fri. 4/15/16 5:15pm fred:

The first time I saw Schwervon! I talked to the guitar player and said they reminded me of the Blake Babies. His reply was "go talk to her". The next time the drummer recognized me in the street outside the show. So far I've only met women who like that band, which is weird. Then again, not many people have heard of them over here, so small sample size...

@sheilaB -- yes, Dynamite Exploded is great! i don't have it, however prices have come down (to the 300-400 range) in recent years, for a while it was in the 800-1000 range... still far beyond my 45 budget, not to mention i doubt originals turn up often.

I was quite addicted to Toto's "Dune" soundtrack back in the day. Heavy play at college.

THIS one had a heavy rotation at our local northern soul allnighters.
Beautiful record and bringing back memories.
