Heya Gary Glenn, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Along with every single other person in the world, Merle Haggard covered "Yesterday."

Howdy, Gary, Doug, Glenn, ndbob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Polyus:

Gary! Where did you get that amazing Beatles sketch you posted on fb?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Actually, my full name happens to be Dougbob!
Avatar 7:04pm glenn:

I'VE never covered yesterday, probably because it's one of the five worst beatles songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gary:

a tossup, probably yellow submarine.
Avatar 7:12pm ndbob:

@glenn pretty good list - though I really dislike get back and the long and winding road
Avatar 7:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I *love* TheBeatles - think a lot about their significance - when they got stoned w/ Dylan & what it means &tc. &tc.
...& sometimes forget there was - BEATLEMANIA - yerknow - complete off the hook madness around them...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Gary:

Okay, what I wanna know is ... what is your first Beatles memory?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Gary:

Avatar 7:14pm ndbob:

Mine is about as standard as you can get - seeing them on Ed Sullivab
Avatar 7:14pm glenn:

i love them too, but i'm not blind to the fact that they put out some pretty horrible dreck.
Avatar 7:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Saturday morning Cartoon Show, probably. Remember standing in line w/ Mommy to see 'Yellow Submarine' in the theatre? Maybe? Yellow Sub lunchbox 1st grade.
...& probably just radio - yerknow?
Avatar 7:15pm ndbob:

and having my sister identify each one for me
Avatar 7:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I was born less than 24 hours before Lennon said 'rattle yer jewelry' @ the Royal Command - almost exactly when the trem 'Beatlemania' was coined...
Avatar 7:15pm ndbob:

and yours Gary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Gary:

My very very first is hearing Hard Day's Night on the transistor radio in the kitchen with my mom. Second is my 2nd grade teacher playing Hey Jude in class. Third is some guy in King City taking me over to his house and his brother showing me the cover of Abbey Road, pointing to Paul, and saying, "These guys are great, but this guy, he just died."
Avatar 7:19pm ndbob:

Ah the Paul is dead thing - I clearly remember going to see A Hard Days Night for my sisters birthday party
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

Bob, I'm actually impressed that you saw that Ed Sullivan show!
Avatar 7:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - @ this point - it's hard to know what you remember - what you remember remembering - & what you remember Media telling you you remember about TheBeatles.
Avatar 7:26pm ndbob:

It does show hold old I am:) My mom told me that I saw Elvis on TV in 1956 but I have no memory at ll of it
Avatar 7:26pm tim abdellah:

Hi Gary (sorry been gone so long!) - The Beatles are there, on the stereo, in my earliest memories, in song books my mom and dad would read from at the plastic organ in the living room. in the album covers that were windows onto a colorful world full of love and fun and creativity. I remember seeing the Yellow Submarine movie when it was new. I must have been 4 years old. But they were already old friends by then!
Avatar 7:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah! - picking out 'If I Fell' on the plastic organ - a good one for that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Gary:

Tim!!!! Those are terrific, vivid memories ... I have one of finding the Yellow Submarine book at my cousin Rebecca's house and being completely entranced by it ...
Avatar 7:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& later - 'covering' 'Yesterday' from gittar cheatbooks & singing it - & Mom listening stealthily from the doorway - & then being embarrassed to have Mommy digging such a sweet tune - & throwing the songbook @ her...heh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Jeff Golick:

Weirdly came to them via Let It Be, which was the only Beatles album my parents had. Then worked my way backward.
Avatar 7:30pm ndbob:

I think back - I could have seen the Beatles - but I didn't
Avatar 7:31pm Mayuko:

Avatar 7:32pm ndbob:

Hi Jeff and Mayuko!
Avatar 7:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes! 'Let It Be' was like my 1st LP w/ the shrinkwrap still on - b-day prez probably. Collecting the LPs a thing for sure. & - that wouldn't have been *that* many years after it was put out...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Jeff Golick:

Hi, @ndbob! And all assembled. #gear
  7:36pm Dean:

Gary! Great show idea, right up there with Doug's tribute to no. 2 yesterday!

My first Beatles LP was Meet the Beatles, naturally. My favorite Beatles LPs are bootlegs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Rich in Washington:

For many years, I have been threatening to form an all-Ringo cover band and call it The Dung Beatles.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Rich in Washington:

Oh. This reminds me - someone just emailed me last night to say that the Cambodian rock documentary Don't Think I've Forgotten is going to be playing in Portland for one night only
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Gary:

See it if you haven't, Rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm cklequ:

Aha.... I'm wide awake for once on a Wednesday evening, and i hate the Beatles, but i'm listening just in case i hear the perfect butchered cover song.

Believe it or not, i was just about to request "Beyond the Valley of a Day in the Life". But i had a feeling it was on your list.
Thanks, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Gary:

Cklequ, you just made me wonder if I missed an opportunity to use the butcher Revolver cover and call the show "Butchering the Beatles"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Rich in Washington:

Crap! I have a class the night it's playing! I need to see it somehow!
Avatar 7:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I can't resist linking to Gaylord Field's Fake Beatles blog:
- & most of all - given this is an international program - the extraordinary 'How The Beatles Rocked the Kremlin' :
Avatar 7:41pm steve:

  7:41pm Dean:

Yesterday and Today butcher cover...unless there's another one out there I'd not heard about...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Gary:

Oops, no you're right, Dean!
  7:43pm Dean:

Steve Hillage does a superior rendition of "It's All Too Much." Isn't every day I get to mention Hillage twice on FMU. Irwin was chatting about Canterbury bands linked to Hatfield & the North.
Avatar 7:45pm glenn:

my sister saw the beatles at maple leaf gardens in 1965? 66? one of them anyway. she couldn't talk for a week afterwards. that was a really good week.
Avatar 7:46pm ndbob:

@glenn :)
Avatar 7:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yoko did say she regrets John didn't live to experience HipHop...
Avatar 7:49pm Mayuko:

My dad was in a Beatles cover band when he was in college in the 60's (probably MANY existed in Japan back in those days) and I just suddenly remembered now about his old guitar scores of Beatles songs. They came with lyrics translated to Japanese. so that people could play and sing them in Japanese. Must have sounded funny in the same way as that Cambodian Hey Jude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

Wow, that's amazing, Mayuko
  7:51pm Doug Schulkind:

Gary, play some nice music for eating Ligurian chicken with kalamata olives and anchovies. Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Gary:

I'll see what I can dig up, Doug!

Avatar 7:52pm Mayuko:

This Come Together is very cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Rich in Washington:

Wow! I'd never heard of Bugotak before! Without glancing at the playlist, I assumed I was listening to Albert Kuvezin (sic) or Yat Kha
Avatar 7:54pm ndbob:

wow Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Rich in Washington:

I don't know why, but Come Together really freaked me out as a small child. Something about the lyrics and the trippy rhythm.

P.S., Olive You?

Avatar 8:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In 'How Beatles Rocked Kremlin' - beguiling how behind Iron Curtain where info was not readily available (just scoring the music was like scoring dope over here) they created their own legends...
Avatar 8:03pm steve:

im sorry i missed "The Beatles"...sounds like i gotta hear some of that
  8:03pm Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Jeff Golick:

Peter Sellers?
  8:04pm Dean:

Oops, except not the one I spelled!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm coelacanth:

hello Gary and all
Avatar 8:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sellers whom, btw, Beatle George said was one of the few famous people whom meeting did not disappoint. Britt Ekland perhaps a different opinion...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm Gary:

David! Coelacanth!
  8:06pm Dean:

Something off Flamin' Groovies' Shake Some Action would fit in nicely, even if not a Beatles cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm cklequ:

The title is a bit misleading. I've heard much worse.
Avatar 8:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@Dean: They do 'Misery' on that, in fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Jeff Golick:

turn it up

This is the most successful coupling on the Grey Album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Gary:

It's pretty unimpeachable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Rich in Washington:

I haven't heard The Grey Album in years. I need to dig it up.

Knickerbockers' "Lies" is one of my fave ersatz Beatles songs.
  8:15pm Dean:

Sure is a pity there isn't a band called Ersatz Beatles.
  8:21pm Dean:

Is the "Beatles baby" to which this song refers the one that appears on the butcher cover?

Avatar 8:26pm steve:

wow yeah
Avatar 8:28pm steve:

wow again! punk goes beatles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm cklequ:

Is it just me or is "Philippine Violators" a great band name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm Rich in Washington:

Oh god. I have some kind of Philippino Beatles parody 7"! I can't recall who it is at the moment. It's like a comedy musical act.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Gary:

It is a totally great band name. (And a great band!)
  8:31pm Jill B.:

Hey Gary. Quite different takes on the Beatles as I remember them. They were my favorite at that time. I could not believe that I was finally hearing a wonderful change in music...The music of the 50's and 60's was so bad, IMO, that I stopped listening to it until one day at your Aunt Arden's I was fortunate to hear the Beatles for the first time....I fell in love with their music!
  8:32pm Mr. Miller:

Entertainer and professional paint-peeler, Mrs. Miller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Gary:

Hey Mom, do you remember the song you heard at Arden's?
  8:34pm Dean:

Some Joe Cocker later?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

Hmm, I'd have to DL it first, Dean
Avatar 8:36pm tim abdellah:

Isaac Hayes' version of "Something" is something epic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Gary:

You know, I don't think I've heard that one, Tim!
  8:37pm Jill B.:

No, I don't remember; I just remember being flooded with the most glorious sounds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Gary:

Tiny Formica table, tiny kitchen, off-white radio, that's what I remember
  8:44pm Jill B.:

That would have been the Stockton tri-plex. Did the kitchen also have an old fridge with a gigantic flower painted on the front????
  8:44pm Dean:

Kitchens and The Beatles: I remember sitting in the kitchen of my parents' home where I then lived reading Camus's "The Fall" when the news of Lennon's murder was reported. That was approx. 16.5 years after the release of HDN, but weirdly a whopping approx. 35.25 years before today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gary:

YES, that's the one!!!

^Yes ... :)
Avatar 8:52pm tim abdellah:

Oh My Gawd - W!
  8:53pm Jill B.:

Do you remember a picnic table and small benches that we had in that kitchen; they were painted navy blue and lime green. The radio was a present from my parents as a high school graduation gift. Now the kids get trips to Europe! Drat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm cklequ:

I first heard that Wax Audio here before i was allowed to click favorites. Glad it's still kicking around.
Avatar 8:56pm hyde:

the Across the Universe cover by Clammbon was really great. I confess that I don't even like the original song all that much (sorry) but the cover was cool
  9:00pm Ryan J:

Hi and good to hear you Gary. Tuning in late but looking forward to the rest of the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm cklequ:

There's always room for Poland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Hyde, I actually agree about the original ... maybe it's kind of overproduced?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Mom, I don't remember the picnic table .... but I am likely wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

Ryan! Ike!
  9:06pm Dean:

It was Phil Spector, recall, but I kinda actually really like Across the Universe. But then I also like the Long and Winding Road, which is very deliberately overproduced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm coelacanth:

holy shit! i can't believe this exists!
Avatar 9:09pm hyde:

@Gary yeah, the Across the Universe original is just a little....distant. Which i guess is understandable, but i still don't like it
  9:11pm Ryan J:

Diggin' Walrus. They have a great groove going on in there. Excellent start to the final hour!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Ike:

I'm no Beatles scholar, but I know that some people very strongly prefer the "naked" Beatles version of "Across the Universe" without all that Phil Spector (over?)production and orchestration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm coelacanth:

hyde, have you heard the "let it be...naked" album? all that diluted by spector stuff is in the more honest, relevant state.
Avatar 9:11pm hyde:

@Dean ha, i don't like Long and Winding Road either. i think this is a "your mileage may vary" kind of thing
Avatar 9:13pm hyde:

@coelecanth & @ike hmmm, i do not know the "naked" beatles version. may need to seek out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Gary:

Ryan, I think you'd love Boris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm coelacanth:

...and i always despised "long and winding road". the naked version is a different vocal take. it actually sounds like he means it!
...+ no lukewarm mush on top.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Jeff Golick:

I have enjoyed the Let It Be...Naked CD, too. Feels fresh again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Gary:

Ah, man -- I've never even heard of this naked Let It Be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm coelacanth:

i wish there were an "all things must pass...naked" album!
  9:17pm Dean:

@hyde: I agree, particularly so with respect to Let It Be, which was such a peculiar conclusion to the group's career. I think what grabbed me then about those tunes was their distance (aptly) from The Beatles I knew from childhood. ATU and LAWR are light-years removed from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" or "Rocky Racoon." I don't know the naked versions, but I suspect I would miss the "lukewarm mush" coelacanth mentions. Sgt. Peppers was, of a course, a masterpiece of production, over-, under-, sideways, and down. But I enjoy the tepid "easy listening" vibe to those tunes on Let It Be as a nice contrast to, say, "One After 909" or "Get Back."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm coelacanth:

(not that i don't absolutely Love it as it is.)
  9:20pm Dean:

As I mentioned above, though, I largely favor the bootlegs, which can be as bare-assed naked as you can get.
Avatar 9:23pm hyde:

@dean hehe, it all may just simply be a taste thing also. i love "one after 909" and get back"!
  9:24pm Dean:

@hyde: Agreed, again! I hope I didn't imply by emphasizing the contrast that I didn't love them!
Avatar 9:27pm hyde:

@Dean heh, not at all. (plus, i can always hack people hating music that i love. it'd get awful boring if we all liked the same stuff).
Avatar 9:30pm Mayuko:

I wonder nobody has ever covered my fav Beatles song She Said She Said? Sad Face.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm cklequ:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Gary:

Gosh, Mayuko ... lemme take a look
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm coelacanth:

really Mayuko? i feel that can't be so!
Avatar 9:32pm hyde:

@Mayuko that can't be your favorite Beatles song, that's *my* favorite Beatles song! ;) (tho i'll settle for I'm Only Sleeping, if it's a real issue)
  9:32pm Ryan J:

Some of these put a big smile on my face and I'm not sure if it is because I like it or because it is tickling a funny bone but it is awesome. It does really make one ponder cultural influence on popular music. I think it is most amusing since the original melodies are so well ingrained!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Gary:

What's amazing to me, Ryan, is how everything is so recognizable, no matter how mangled or reworked
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm coelacanth:

i cannot have a favorite.
maybe i could narrow it down to 5-10.
Avatar 9:34pm Mayuko:

I should google before I speak, apparently some people did cover that song.... two votes for She Said She Said! haha.
  9:35pm Jill B.:

Hey Ryan J. ........ our NoDak guy! Good to see you here tonight.
  9:35pm Ryan J:

Absolutely! It's kind of like elevator music but way cooler!
  9:36pm Jill B.:

Gary, the flowered fridge and picnic table were part of the same kitchen. It's okay if you remember things differently.....don't we all.
  9:36pm Ryan J:

Good Evening Jill. I hope all is well and good to see you here too!
Avatar 9:37pm hyde:

@Mayuko even more sadly, i actually own the Feelies LP where they cover that one. should maybe spin that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Gary:

Hyde, can you email me that track?
Avatar 9:39pm northguineahills:

I get a good 25 minutes of Bodega Pop!
Avatar 9:39pm Mayuko:

@hyde would LOVE to hear that!
Avatar 9:39pm hyde:

@Gary i don't have it ripped. all i have is the vinyl! (it's an EP, technically)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Gary:

Never mind, Hyde, I'm DLing it now ...
Avatar 9:39pm northguineahills:

I believe Klaus Breyer is an Irwin fave.
Avatar 9:40pm hyde:

@Gary *snicker* then email it to me! (and Mayuko)

Avatar 9:42pm Mayuko:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm coelacanth:

i wonder if there's any cover of "i'll be back". i doubt it. i dont know why but i've always Loved that one above many others. (though still not in my top 10)
Avatar 9:45pm hyde:

true fact: the last time i did a stage dive was when i saw Husker Du and they covered Ticket to Ride
  9:46pm Jill B.:

Hey Ryan, Yes, all if well here. Sunny, no rain! Garden is exploding with new stuff emerging each day. Hal busy building a garden shed; comes in exhausted each evening. Hope all is well with all of you, my dear loved ones, out there in the mid-west. :>)
  9:46pm Ryan J:

!w! Love it! Rock on...
  9:48pm Ryan J:

Jill, no moisture here at all but temps are warm and things are reluctantly turning green.
Avatar 9:50pm northguineahills:

About 8-10 years ago, a WFMU dj did a marathon premium of Beatles covers, and it's killing me I can't remember who...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm Gary:

Kurt just did one last year, I think
  9:53pm Dean:

I heard this Except Me and My Monkey on WFMU before... can't remember who played it but remember this track very well! Probably Daniel Blumin played it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm coelacanth:

Gary, having scrolled up inadvertently to your question...my oldest beatle memory is also my oldest r&r memory. i went from the mary poppins st & a danny kaye children's record to Meet the Beatles and i clearly recall the overwhelming joy i felt when i learned that such a thing exists. i took it apart in my head and it turned my world upside-down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm coelacanth:

(i was 4-5)
Avatar 9:57pm northguineahills:

My oldest Beatle memory was when I got a new lime scented marker for my fifth bday, and and I colored in "Beatles" on the White Album and my father got home, saw me doing it, and slapped the hell out of me. My mom scolded him, and he apologized to me. 10 years later, I totally understood.
Avatar 9:58pm hyde:

damn, i don't like Hey, Jude either but this is great

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm coelacanth:

i Love it Mayuko! i wish there still existed a copy of John's original demo of that....not to mock Ringo!
  10:06pm Ryan J:

  10:08pm Ryan J:

It totally does!! Nailed it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50am pacific standard simon:

Finally got around to listening to this show. Great stuff, good work Gary. A while back I went looking for covers of Brian Eno songs on YouTube, and that was quite rewarding also.
