Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm fleep:

Greetings, Sheila. How's your cortex today?
Avatar 3:06pm djsheilab:

Hurray!!!! So happy to be home : ) And you're all here!
Avatar 3:07pm djsheilab:

Just got my hands on that Cortex release @fleep. So creepy + beautiful!
  3:07pm JakeGould:

FWIW, I caught something this past week. The “cold” feeling was oddly minty in feeling if that makes any sense. Weird cold,
Avatar 3:09pm drewo:

No foolin'! Sheila's the best.
Avatar 3:11pm Evan From Seattle:

Hey Sheila and everyone!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Gaylord Fields:

@djasheilab: Assuming/hoping you're well — I think the WFLU has finally subsided throughout the staff.
Avatar 3:13pm djsheilab:

Why thank you @Drewo!
Avatar 3:13pm djsheilab:

@Gaylord Fields Hey! Pretty much back to normal now. But it completely wiped me. As I know it did for so many. You feeling better too?
Avatar 3:16pm djsheilab:

I haven't even had a chance to thank you all for your marathon support. Geezzzz.....lotsa catching up to do!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Gaylord Fields:

Pretty much, Sheila — I'd say 95%.
  3:17pm JakeGould:

@GaylordFields: I know you could have been 105%.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Gaylord Fields:

@JakeGould: As long as I'm not 105°.
  3:19pm Mark R.:

This is a very solid concept for a song, lyrically. You could write like 92 verses about that relationship.
  3:19pm JakeGould:

@GaylordFields: Fair enough. I think I produced 110% of my yearly mucus allowance this past week. USA! USA! USA!
  3:20pm Cliff:

  3:21pm JakeGould:

@Blech:Your disgust was my existence.
  3:21pm Mark R.:

I guess the subtext is Daddy was a man of God, but he was also a man, if you dig what I'm saying...
Avatar 3:22pm djsheilab:

@Mark R. Hehe....yup! Excellent title, excellent concept. My theory is that any record with Go-Go in the title is fabulous. I have yet to be proven wrong.
  3:24pm Cliff:

Belly....I was so into this band in college
  3:24pm miketp portland:

Love the selections. First time with the show. Glad to be here. Sunny n 70 ish in Portland Oregon

btw, i'm about to start week five with this flu thing. fml. hope everyone is feeling well and breathing normally.
  3:28pm JakeGould:

@chris: Adding this to my want list: www.crammed.be...
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I'm glad I didn't come down with anything this week. Here is my first-world problem: I heard the Bumble Bee Tuna song this week and it's my earworm. I'm at work now and unable to replace it with a better one. "Yum yum bumble bee, Bumble Bee Tuna!"
  3:29pm JakeGould:

I meant this: www.crammed.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm Uncle Michael:

Feeling better, Sheila?
  3:30pm Listener Robert:

I've seen the videos of youse guys practically swallowing the mic when singing, 7 wonder why you aren't all sick all the time. Glad you're better.
  3:31pm Cliff:

Julie was awesome, I listened to all three of her fill-ins that Thursday/Friday. So glad you're feeling better now Sheila!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:31pm chris:

heck yeah, @jake! i should have suspected Yasmine Hamdan was involved.
  3:34pm KP:

Who's this then
  3:34pm JasonInBoston:

Bobby Reed is an awesome 45. Found an original vinyl issue with a crack for $1.00. Sold it for $100. Missed it terribly. Years later here I am again buying a copy with a crack in the deadwax for $175. Yeesh. Foxbase Alpha is one my favorite albums of all time.
  3:35pm Cooh John:

Booms all around to djsheilab and all the usual suspects. Let the weekend begin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm northguineahills:

I once talked to Rachel Goswell after a Mojave 3 show, and as we parted, she kissed me on the cheek, and I nearly fainted, as I'd had a crush on her since I was 16 back in the Slowdive days....
  3:36pm JakeGould:

Man, this flu song is accusatory and might start fights between sniffling/coughing folk.
  3:37pm JakeGould:

“I Caught the Flu From WFMU” and all I got was this lousy marathon pledge bill.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Julie:

I feel very lucky I didn't get the WFLU, and I did wipe everything down. One week later still good (knock knock)
Avatar 3:38pm Honeybear:

@NGH you might even still have her germs.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Gaylord Fields:

@djsheilab: You are my hero for playing the flu song!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:39pm chris:

oh, that is the stuff of dreams, @ngh!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Julie:

wendy james!
  3:41pm Cliff:

There's a WFLU in Miles City, FL.
  3:42pm JakeGould:

This is why I listen to this show: I want to hear modern pop like “ “Transmission Vamp” in-between the vintage stuff. Great work!
Avatar 3:43pm djsheilab:

@Gaylord Fields So fitting, right? Found it this past week in Allentown, PA.
  3:43pm JakeGould:

Aarrrgh! “Transvision Vamp”! Stupid sexy spellcheck.
Avatar 3:43pm djsheilab:

Thanks @JakeGould! Was so great meeting you during the marathon.
  3:44pm JakeGould:

@djsheilab: The feeling is the same… But less congested as of today.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Carmichael:

Hey I dig these Vamps. Clicky Starred!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Gaylord Fields:

@djaheilab: Connie + Ellie = bliss!
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Gaylord Fields:

@djsheilab: It was Fate apologizing for making you sick in the one way it knew you'd accept the apology.
  3:50pm Ryab:

mmmmmmmm that tabla
Avatar 3:50pm Honeybear:

I like the way SheilaB's sensibilities extrapolate to years well past 1968, and to future decades, even. Helps me catch up on stuff I blotted out from my awareness during much of the actual 90s, for example.
Avatar 3:53pm djsheilab:

Hehe...yup @Honeybear Sometimes I do like to travel beyond my beloved 1968 : )
Avatar 3:56pm Evan From Seattle:

Love this Still Parade track.. Is the album out yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm rsj:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Uncle Michael:

You must be German.
Avatar 4:05pm statoj:

Oh right, tilde.
  4:05pm Tommy Haynes:

We got your back...great show
  4:06pm Cliff:

You're banned from the typography club, statoj! ;0
  4:07pm JakeGould:

@DJSheilaB: Being there in the phone room during Todd-O-Phonic Todd’s show and seeing Todd’s face when you ripped him a new one about the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (“What is this? 1994!”) was just fan-fucking-tastic. Now THAT’S funny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Stevel:

Tilde Umlaut was known primarily for her soap-operaesque tele dramas, following her career as one of the renowned "Goering's Gals".
  4:08pm T from New B:

The squiggly line is called a tilde, which is German for "you must put these words together under penalty of death"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm northguineahills:

Lush! Squeee!
  4:09pm Cliff:

LUSH!!!! :D <3
  4:09pm JasonInBoston:

Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm common:

This is NEW Lush?
  4:10pm JakeGould:

Ok, gotta hop, skip and jump away (after Lush), thanks Sheila! might make it back for the end of your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm northguineahills:

I like how the Lush EP cover is contiguous w/ the old Lush cover art.
Avatar 4:11pm djsheilab:

Thanks @northguineahills!
Avatar 4:12pm djsheilab:

Seems with Lush, not much has changed. Which to me is a good thing!
  4:12pm JakeGould:

Who does art direction at 4AD nowadays? Not Ivo Watts-Russell still, is it?
  4:13pm nickrhombi:

saw lush on the second (and my only) lalapalooza tour. guitar player used a boogie one 12" cabinet. i thought that was really great. they sounded awesome.
Avatar 4:13pm Evan From Seattle:

Like I wasn't looking forward to seeing Lush this month already. Love that new one! Wow.
  4:15pm JakeGould:

I saw Lush in 1991 with Smashing Orange at the Marquee in Chelsea and in 1992 at the Ritz with Poster Children. Pleases me they are still playing the same stuff I love them for 20+ years later.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Carmichael:

Boy the Honeybees outright stole the riff from "Come Go With Me", didn't they?
  4:17pm MONEYBAG$:

I was going to say the Poster Children should come back, but they probably never broke up
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:17pm Gaylord Fields:

New Lush? I'm in!
  4:18pm MONEYBAG$:

Sorry, no THE in front of Poster Children

Avatar 4:26pm Swan_Gone:

I ain't mad at it!

We're gonna go from sad, to very sad, to absolutely devastating!
Avatar 4:26pm djsheilab:

With a sexy Italian song in the middle.
  4:27pm Cliff:

Here come the feels then
  4:27pm Mark R.:

This singer has a Lou Reed quality, a bit. Yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm common:

I love a lot of his sad songs. wish I hadn't heard that he was such a jerk.
  4:31pm Mark R.:

Lori seems like she's ready to party.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:34pm chris:

that was rowrrrr!
  4:35pm JakeGould:

Lori Loria could use some pants and a shirt.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm chris:

well, we recently learned that naked is a state of mind, at least according to Luscious Jackson, Jake... maybe Lori Loria took that a bit literally?
Avatar 4:39pm TDK60:

I dig Melancholia. I'm not always that way but often. I mean 'Sketches of Spain' by Miles Davis is one of my fave LPs and that's melancholic, baby.
Avatar S.B. Boomer: Marathon 2022 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Ben Watt I don't know but Marissa Nadler leans that melancholic way; love her music.

A bit lascivious for 1946, huh
  5:28pm JakeGould:

Oofff. I think there's some double entendre stuff happening here.
Avatar 5:29pm Honeybear:

"Soundies": they were the music videos of their day.

Apparently there were "soundie" jukeboxes but they were very shortlived, late '40s like you say.

'Soundies' - reminds me of that TV program Michael Feinstein had about music preservation :

Dion said - 'I can't please everyone - I'm not a pizza!'
Avatar 5:35pm Evan From Seattle:

I was living in England when this came out too. More than hearing the actual song was just random drunk people in the pub shouting "I WHIP MUH HURRR BACK AND FURTH!"
  5:36pm JakeGould:

I'm fine with Willow.
  5:36pm P-90:

They used to have these movie jukeboxes called "Panorams", you picked a song and the soundie played on a rear-projection screen. Sometimes also shown as short subjects in theaters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm tomasz.:

i bootlegged this with an El-P beat when it came out, which i thought was pretty great, but Soundcloud evidently didn't, cuz they took it down

Thanks Honeybear, I saw Roppongi and was wondering what the connection with Japan was

Trying to figure out the name of that screaming guitar player on the Ann Lewis stuff.
Avatar 5:56pm Honeybear:

I would have been blown away if she was (strictly) Anglo-raised. That's why I had to check. But have there been any non-natively-raised vocalists that have attained some degree of pop success singing Japanese?
Avatar 5:56pm Honeybear:

(Either way, I'm definitely a fan of hers, now).
  5:57pm P-90:

McCartney's "Hi, Hi, Hi" might have influenced "Can the Can"
