Hello, Brian. Ooof that's a bummer.

good morning

Welcome, @Andrew Waterloo!
  9:09am
Doctorjazz:

hi all, Happy Easter! Taking you out on the Ozzie walk early today.
Expecting some Gentle Brozman today
Great Brand/Ibrahim to start the show (this also sounded great when he recorded it with a large band).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am
Jeff Golick:

Hi, @doctorjazz! Bad edit at the end of that Brand tune; sorry about that.
  9:14am
Doctorjazz:

was kinda sudden, but the Moholo is smoothing Every thing out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am
Jeff Golick:

Yah feels like we could end the show after this Moholo.
  9:16am
Doctorjazz:

love the bass...

ack, i forgot to tune in right away. and i have to leave to eat dumplings real soon. but i'll listen until then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am
Jeff Golick:

Happy to have you for even a moment, @hyde. Leaving to eat dumplings seems entirely right to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am
Jeff Golick:

(@hyde: you get the Drummer email show announcements?)
Avatar 🦀 9:50am
hyde:

@Jeff yeah. i'm just not usually much good at looking at my email on the weekends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am

That also seems entirely right to me.

this George Lewis is fantastic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am
Jeff Golick:

Maybe we should do another AACMpler (volume 2?) and put this on it.
  10:05am
Gary:

Mmm, dumplings
  10:06am
Doctorjazz:

not a whole lot of Bird I can pick up so far, but a fine track...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, Gary! Figured the dumplings would bring you out...

@drjazz: yeah, it's not directly, musically inspired in that way. Sort of like Miles' Duke tribute, "He Loved Him Madly."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am
Jeff Golick:

George Lewis band here is:
Anthony Davis
Douglas Ewart
Richard Teitelbaum
  10:17am

Come for the dumplings, stay for the atmospheric percussion

Erella:

Oh thank you. So fantastic! That album is a desert Island Disc for me, for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Erella! You are most welcome. I too never tire of that Jones/Haden disc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Jeff Golick:

We've hit the soft squishy creamy jazz core of this Cadbury egg of a show.
Avatar 10:34am
Erella:

I used to give it to friends that were about to have surgery and needed to rest and feel great.
  10:35am
Dean:

Agreed, a desert island disc. Add Walt Dickerson & Sun Ra "Visions" and Tragicomedia's excerpts from Bach's Anna Magdalena Notebook and I'll pack up and move to the next available desert island.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Jeff Golick:

What a lovely gesture.
Avatar 10:35am
Erella:

So far, so GREAT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am

Greetings, @Dean! I would welcome your list of island picks, for sure.
  10:37am
Dean:

A rare pleasure to be here this a.m. I've missed the show since the schedule change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am
Jeff Golick:

I realize West Coast living is not conducive to a 9am EST start, Dean! Great to have you here, live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am

So strange, now, to hear Cecil comping behind other soloists.
Avatar 10:49am

'Wee Small Hours' - 1st Concept Album? I think Frank was shrooming, see...that great early Sinatra...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am
Jeff Golick:

Hallo, @RevRabbitNov63! I think I've heard it referred to as such, shrooms or no shrooms.
  10:52am
Dean:

Before Sinatra there was Gordon Jenkins. Seven Dreams was 1953.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am
Jeff Golick:

Ah yes. The "sepulchral Gordon Jenkins."
  10:53am
Dean:

And of course Jenkins arranged for Sinatra.
Avatar 10:54am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ha! LPS were 1st the Classic market - cause a Suite would fit on there? It was about Pop artists getting around to thinking about making albums as a whole, not just a bunch of tracks.
  10:56am
Dean:

Well, Mussourgsky might not have had a "concept album" in mind with "Pictures at an Exhibition," but thanks to Ravel and, later, ELP, it turned into one.
Avatar 10:56am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...grown-ups would buy Lounge Long Players - which was meant to make atmospheres...
  10:57am
Doctorjazz:

loved hearing that early Cecil Taylor...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am
Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: you can almost hear his impatience with the changes. The next year he blows it all up with Jimmy Lyons and Sunny Murray in Copenhagen.
  11:00am
Doctorjazz:

and this one, sounds like he has 50 fingers (added bonus...wife is out, can listen over speakers).
Avatar 11:00am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...w/out psychedelics, & w/ digital files - attention spans have shrunk back down - mine certainly have - altho' how I listen is webio streaming (which might be a three-hour show) & podcasts (one hour, sometimes more, often less)...
This Taylor actually reminds me of some Keith Emerson in the same year a touch. Keith knew some stuff & had chopps - sad.
Avatar 11:02am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Definitely FreeJazz as Liberation...will liberate you of the unappreciative very quickly...
  11:03am
Gary:

You can keep going ... :-)
  11:04am
Doctorjazz:

I really like that tension in the early CT stuff, it does feel like he's looking for ways of of the changes on these tracks, that tension is delicious...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am

CT's bday is a heavy family day for us: wife's grandmoher's bday, and also the day her father passed in 1999.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am

Pretty sure I have all of the Reel Recordings releases. It's founder, Michael King, was a dear friend of GTDS and he kept me in the loop. His demise (and his label's) remain hard for me to accept.

Nah, this is Sphere (#19, per discogs) out of Detroit: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am

It was like so totally NOT that long ago that I came to understand that Strata Records and Strata-East Records were like so totally NOT the same label.
  11:40am
Dean:

But you never confused Banana Records with Apple Records, I bet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am
Jeff Golick:

I ALMOST commented to the effect of: "Strata, not to be confused with Strata-East."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
Jeff Golick:

Or for any fellow Bostonians (current or former): "Jordan's Furniture, not to be confused with Jordan Marsh."
  11:43am
Dean:

This D-to-D record isn't officially available for another five days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am
Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Nor Peaches Records (but that was a store, not a label). I still have some old record crates and cassette crates (and of course 100s of records) I purchased at a Peaches in Rockville, Maryland, in the late '70s.

thanks for the show, listening on archive - just a note, your vocal levels on dj breaks are way too loud, at least to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm
Jeff Golick:

Thanks for the note, @vv, and for listening. I'll check out the mic levels -- first time back at the home controls following two marathon shows at the station, so might've missed the mark.
