Hey, those Yips don't have any space bucks to pledge to WFMU, so we'll have to do it for them. Pledge all your space bucks to WFMU! What else can a person do with space bucks?

Got the email plea. Would have been more effective if you told us one of the puppies would die if the goal wasn’t reached. And the other puppy would have to live with endless guilt.

@Jake: Ha ha ha! I'll add that now: Pledge or the puppies die.

Avatar 9:52am Samantha:

Phone pledges!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am doctorjazz:

OK, so I still don't know how to split the Swag for Life, spread it around (you may have mentioned it on air, being at work I miss things...). Is there some sort of link? (suppose it doesn't really matter that much, the money is going to the station, but it takes some of the fun out of the marathon, drawings for prizes, that stuff).
Avatar 9:52am Cecile:

you know it.

Also, I am 1) never going to another show where Slayer is playing even if Jesus himself is opening for them, and 2) setting foot into the fire marshall's nightmare that is Myth nightclub in Maplewood, MN.
Avatar 9:54am Van in DC:

Tinariwen I first heard on Irene's show, I think
Avatar 9:55am Cecile:

what is the Nice song that's very elegant and restrained, and has a killer trumpet fanfare through out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am MattBelow:

First Class WFMU DJ on phone #1! Talk to an original!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Joe & Samantha and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Ken From Hyde Park:

@doctorjazz - Joe sent emails to S4L folks last week. It can be viewed online here: us1.campaign-archive1.com...
Avatar 9:56am Cheri Pi:

something similar just happened to my friend at Slayer in Columbus, she has now sworn them off.
  9:56am lloyd michigan:

Where can I find the track list for your premium?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am MD:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am MD:

Band Name Up For Grabs!!!
Avatar 9:58am βrian:

Has Ann Arbor represented yet?
Avatar 9:59am Cecile:

I am pretty idealistic about metal people, but their audience is the worst. Period.
I did see my husband's nephew and grandnephew there, it was pretty funny. They're both 5'5" and everyone there was 7 feet tall.

I represented in spirit earlier.

Anyway, after parking 1/4 mile away, and the 04 minute wait and the metal detector, and the club being oversold, we saw exactly 2.5 songs of Carcasses. We thought we saw the top of their heads, but weren't sure. Testament were excellent, but we were over it.
Avatar 10:00am Cecile:

sorry, 40 minute wait.

I hate the northern suburbs.
Avatar 10:00am Joe McG:

I'm not sure, Brian, but I know we have a lot of listeners from out that way, so I think it's likely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz: here's the salient bit --
Here's how it works online:
1. Visit wfmu.org/pledge
2. Enter the amount of your annual pledge total that you want to use up, and paradoxically, choose "One-time" and NOT "Per Month"
3. Choose the shows you want to credit from the drop-down menu and be sure to hit the + button <<-- this is key; do it for each show.
4. When you get to the end of the pledge process, choose "Send me a bill" as your payment option (our credit card processor already has your card info so no need to re-enter it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Hugh:

So Slayer is the Trump of metal this year. This is a topic?
  10:01am lloyd michigan:

track list? anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am MattBelow:

@lloyd michigan: Track listings for premiums are usually not published
Avatar 10:02am Samantha:

Guys the Mariah-Utakata No Hibi is amazing
Avatar 10:03am Joe McG:

Hey Lloyd--I can't give you a full track list now, but if you e-mail me after the show, I can pass it along to you...Many of the tracks are sourced from 45s, so some are on the less-common side...
Avatar 10:03am Cecile:

90% of their their fans are dicks and they haven't made a great record since South of Heaven.
  10:04am lloyd michigan:

Why is that? M. Shelley lists the songs on his. (And they're usually pretty great.)
  10:04am lloyd michigan:

Ok. Joe. Thanks!
Avatar 10:04am Cecile:

I think 1/2 of the time they haven't come up with the final listing yet.
Avatar 10:05am Marcel M:

Avatar 10:06am Joe McG:

@Cecile: My premium is done, just not mastered yet, so the on-air one I'm playing is a little rough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Jeff Golick:

Ah...and the high school drama club memories come flooding back...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Stepchild:

I need more coffee or you spoke too quickly. How to get in for the Grand Prize?
Avatar 10:07am βrian:

This is a seat-of-the-pants operation, after all. That's why it needs the marathon: to patch those breeches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Pledge monkey is strutting nicely along to this one.
Avatar 10:08am Joe McG:

@Stepchild: $100 pledge or more gets you in the running. Not very many people so far, so you stand a good chance!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Stepchild:

ooh I see the playlist -- $100 is coming at ya
  10:10am Polyus:

@Cecile - first time at Myth? It's a real treat.
  10:11am H-Cameron:

Avatar 10:15am Van in DC:

Sure, I go for coffee and miss Cocteau Twins. Sigh.
Avatar 10:16am βrian:

Joe is getting his frisson on.
  10:17am Polyus:

I saw Kraftwerk there, of all things. Probably 99% of the audience had never stepped foot inside the place, myself included. What a dump.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am annie:

frisson: a sudden strong feeling of excitement or fear; a thrill.

think Cat
Avatar 10:18am Cecile:

I have never, ever, ever been in a place with such horrible sightlines. And no way in hell am I getting in the middle of the main floor at a Slayer show. I want to keep my teeth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Artie Haywire:

Virtuous Cycle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am sphere:

they call it the "virtuous cycle," Joe. :)
Avatar 10:19am Joe McG:

This time change thing not exactly conducive to the glibness and language centers. Oof.
  10:21am Help!!!!!!!:

Hi, I'm a Swag for lifer, and I want to up my payment to the next level. My monthly payment is through paypal. What is the procedure to change my monthly payment and adjust my swag? It appears the online system has changed, and I've heard conflicting versions of the procedure.
Avatar 10:21am Cecile:

Monday morning after Spring Forward. You're doing great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Caryn:

For a second, I almost thought Transmitters were singing "The frisson's on".
Avatar 10:22am Listener 108581:

well. That was probably the coolest cover I've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am sphere:

Steely Dan and Rick James jam out on the Kinks! LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am notsoKWYET:

How much donation required to get in the running for that Critical Mass vinyl?

@Help, I would probably lean towards canceling it and restarting it
Avatar 10:24am Joe McG:

@notso: Just $15!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Stepchild:

the answer is: email Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am courtneynoir:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Hugh:

I wager Tina Turner's "Whole Lotta Love" is on Joe's premium. Yes, that's a request!
  10:29am Help!!!!!!!:

Thanks Joe, and everyone. I just thought you'd be swamped with this kind of stuff at the moment, so thought I'd ask here rather than clog up your inbox. Will get in touch later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am listener monica:

Thanks for playing Prince!
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

They were Rick James's backup band.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am sphere:

Joe, this is rob t (94944). Instead of renewing, I just made another Swag4Lyfe pledge at a higher level. Should I email you?
Avatar 10:34am Marcel M:

Oh snap, Disco Toilette!
Avatar 10:35am Joe McG:

Yes, Rob, because we have to take care of that old S4L you already had running.

  10:39am lloyd michigan:

True that. S.Q. Reeder.
Avatar 10:39am Cecile:

this record kind of paled to Breakfast in America, but it sold a bazillion copies the year it came out. For people who paid attention, America being huge wasn't that much of a surprise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am sphere:

Joe - OK, I'll drop you a line today. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Tim 07030:

Supertramp: the first concert I ever saw and I am only mildly ashamed to admit it!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Caryn:

Btw, Joe, I'll probably have to switch my S4L pledge level, but I'm kinda playing things by ear, so I won't know the new total until the Marathon ends and I see what I've decided to give this year. I'll e-mail then. Just a heads up.

Avatar 10:53am Van in DC:

Lindsay going wild on guitar at the end of "I'm So Afraid" is something to behold. Saw them at Verizon Center last year in DC. Just, wow.

Avatar 11:10am Listener 108581:

The greatest male Welsh singer ever... outside of Jon Langford.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am courtneynoir:

can I just throw my hands in the air without sticking out my tongue?
Avatar 11:11am Cecile:

What about John Cale?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am ChrisB.:

A bit of Little Richard in there, Tom.
Avatar 11:11am Listener 108581:

Huh, wonder if Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey were ever an item..
Avatar 11:11am Cecile:

Tom Jones unplugged should just be in front of a high school marching band.
Avatar 11:12am Van in DC:

Broken clavicle, no hand in air even.
Avatar 11:12am Joe B:

was honored to be with Joe when he found Disco Toilet. not proud of fact that I tried to talk him out of buying it so I could grab it
Avatar 11:13am Cecile:

you should play Tom doing "Kiss" and hit a Prince/Tom Jones double.
  11:13am lloyd michigan:

@Uncle Michael...TJ has four what?
  11:13am lloyd michigan:

Good call Cecile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Uncle Michael:

Of the things mortal men just have a pair of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Artie Haywire:

Spring is here, and talk turns to balls and strikes.
Avatar 11:15am Cecile:

eyes? feet? Lungs?
  11:16am oks:

TJ "Kiss" is pretty juicy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Caryn:

@Uncle Michael: I'm hoping that's metaphorical, because considering how tight Tom's pants used to be, I think that would've been a major issue. Let's face it, the FCC would've done an Elvis-like "shoot him only from the waist up" edict.
  11:17am lloyd michigan:

I knew a guy with 5. His underwear fit like a glove.
Avatar 11:17am Cecile:

King Curtis also did a wild "whole lotta love"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Ike:

Ha ha! Joe B. dishing the dirt that we love to hear during the marathon! Everybody pledge for the delicious secrets and lies!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Lewis:

It is amazing how Joe can do a radio show, during the marathon and still keep up with his email so well that I get a pledge receipt 2 cuts after I pledge! Go Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Uncle Michael:

I have to say, as hard as this Tina rocks, I'm not tired of the original, yet.
  11:19am lloyd michigan:

Should I have received an email after pledging??
  11:20am Jonathan Herweg:

Yearning indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Uncle Michael:

lloyd wins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Artie Haywire:

Did Tina ever cover "Slow Ride"?
Avatar 11:21am unklemunki:

LOVE Tina's version of this

All the lakes are open, now, Lewis. But I guess you know that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Lewis:

Hi Cecile! - Whatya think about the early spring?

@Brian - was just thinking about that last night as I heard it has been raining down your way...
  11:28am lloyd michigan:

Badlands was based on a true story.
Avatar 11:29am Cecile:

Yeah, Charlie Starkweather and Caril Fugate.

Lewis, it's weird. My body is just walking around like it's half asleep...
Avatar 11:29am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe. Charles Starkweather?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am courtneynoir:

oh hello from Lincoln, Nebraska - home of Charlie Starkweather!!
Avatar 11:30am Joe McG:

Thanks all of you who have pledged so far...if you haven't yet, show me and WFMU some support. I really enjoy being with you every week and want it to continue!
  11:30am lloyd michigan:

Charles Raymond "Charlie" Starkweather was an American teenaged spree killer who murdered eleven people in the states of Nebraska and Wyoming in a two-month murder spree between December 1957 and January 1958
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am annie:

i saw "Badlands" for the first time this winter and it was sooo good.. not just another "shoot-em-up".
  11:31am lloyd michigan:

Natural Born Killers was a twisted version.
Avatar 11:32am Cecile:

It looks like Caril Fugate may get a pardon. They've unearthed a ton of evidence that exonerates her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am courtneynoir:

I grew up having picnics at Starkweather's grave with my mom .... (still do)
Avatar 11:32am Joe McG:

The last lines of this song are so cold!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am annie:

see, i didn't care for that, lloyd
Avatar 11:33am Samantha:

C'mon listeners less than a half hour!
  11:33am lloyd michigan:

Me either.
Avatar 11:33am Cecile:

and NBK inspired a crime spree of its own.
Avatar 11:33am Listener 108581:

man, I've been meaning to watch Badlands for 30 years. It's high time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Nate K.:

This is the Bruce album for people who don't like Bruce...but also the album for people who DO like Bruce!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am MattBelow:

Folk-rock guitars always brighten up a cloudy day!
Avatar 11:34am Joe McG:

Well said, Nate!
Avatar 11:34am Listener 108581:

that Springsteen was great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am annie:

i tire very quickly of movies with gratuitous violence and sex.. overkill
Avatar 11:35am Listener 108581:

Guess Nebraska is the album for me..
Avatar 11:36am βrian:

Ayeh. I avoid anything that Tarantino has been near.
  11:36am lloyd michigan:

Overkill. Literally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am annie:

listener 108581, now is the year!
Avatar 11:36am Brian in UK:

annie I do not tire of them because I never see them. My daughter comments that I watch everyday films where nothing happens.
  11:37am lloyd michigan:

Wasn't NBK Oliver Stone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am annie:

Bonnie and clyde was the first i saw that turned me away from the gun movies. you're a smart man brian/UK
Avatar 11:38am Cecile:

He usually uses a nuke to kill a fly.
Avatar 11:38am Brian in UK:

It is the most beautiful warm early Spring day over this side. Bit like the avatar.
Avatar 11:38am Cecile:

I like action and capers, but not so much brutal realistic violence.
Avatar 11:39am Brian in UK:

Cecile love 'capers'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am annie:

ours, too, here in asheville, brian; although way too early..
Avatar 11:39am Listener 108581:

I can deal with extremes sometimes but mostly I just watch old black and white movies where "nothing happens."
Avatar 11:39am βrian:

@BUK: Does Stranger than Paradise fall within that category?
Avatar 11:39am Cecile:

wait, that song pretty much encapsulates every Rufus Wainwright song ever.
Avatar 11:40am Cecile:

Brian, the minute someone rolls out the map to the vault, I'm in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am annie:

i loved the "thin man" movies, and then anything that Asta is in.
Avatar 11:41am Listener 108581:

Thin Man rules.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Caryn:

NBK: script by Tarantino, direction by Stone. That was a perfect storm of stylistic trickery and OTT brutality.
Avatar 11:42am Brian in UK:

βrian do not know that film but I like what I have seen of JJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Nate K.:

"Badlands" is in my Top 10.
  11:43am lloyd michigan:

Love the stream of consciousness this board produces.
Avatar 11:44am βrian:

It's fun. Nothing happens and beautifully. Oh and Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Nate K.:

Alex is the king!
Avatar 11:45am Brian in UK:

βrian hang on does SJH plays a part in a hotel. If so, yes I liked it.
Avatar 11:45am Cecile:

he was probably producing the first Cramps EP.
Avatar 11:45am βrian:

Terrier heart out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am annie:

i love THIS movie: "Night Tide" with Dennis Hopper, a beautiful sight to behold in his first full-length movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am annie:

yay, you reached the goal!
Avatar 11:47am Roberto:

I wonder why that joint line was cut from the '70s Show theme...
Avatar 11:47am βrian:

Hmm. I think that was Mystery Train. In this case, it's his song that provides a motif.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am courtneynoir:

@Brian in UK That was "Mystery Train"
Avatar 11:49am Brian in UK:

Yes, Mystery Train that rings a bell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am SeanG:

my plum!
Avatar 11:50am βrian:

"I put a spell on you!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Carmichael:

Been one fine morning, Joe and Samantha, thanks so much
Avatar 11:55am Brian in UK:

One of my all time favourites is Le Grand Meaulnes from 1967 directed by Jean-Gabriel Albicocco. Hard to get hold of though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Carmichael:

I don't know how long it takes to get my radio thingie, but I swagged for life last week. And I also asked for your premium, Joes!
Avatar 11:56am Brian in UK:

Sem is the sun shining on you, old bean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Tim 07030:

Great show, Joe and Samantha, and I am not just saying that because I won a prize
Avatar 11:56am Liz Berg:
