Last week we talked about "Mau Mau (Amerikon)" from "Blows Against The Empire." A few days later Paul Kantner passed! R.I.P.

If you want to know more about St. Sebastian, the Martyr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Scott Williams:

@TDK60, yep couldn't help noticing that. And Signe Anderson, btw

I recall Yukio Mishima was obsessed with St Sebastian.

Avatar 3:24pm TDK60:

A Wikipedia entry says Signe Toly Andersen died on the same day as Kantner, Jan. 28.

These rock stars are now at a RISKY age and its a RISKY stressful time of year"winter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Davis:

as long as not more than 1 of his tracks are played
  3:46pm paula pc:

our collective concern for our musical elders with the winter is touching. there is NO IRONY in that statement.
Avatar 3:48pm Chris from DC:

Saw Morton Subotnick last week, glad he's still here. Amazing performance.
  3:48pm Polyus:

Saw this the other day, but just couldn't pull the trigger. Curse your inflated prices on vinyl, Music Industry!
  3:48pm BriJet:

Diggin this groovy song
Avatar 3:49pm Wild Neil:

I used to think of all the hippy generation as "about 25 years older than me"...now they are all passing away. Its sad....
  3:51pm Cliff:

They're dying pretty young though....Kantner and Anderson were 74, Bowie was only 69
  3:52pm Cliff:

And Lemmy was 70
Avatar 3:53pm glenn:

yeah, but rock star years are worth 2.5 normal human years.
  3:55pm SeanG:

anybody over the age of 60 is not YOUNG
  3:55pm Cliff:

I guess it's all of the drugs, and hookers, and adrenaline, and drugs
Avatar 3:55pm glenn:

substance abuse, lack of sleep, poor diet and s.t.d.s have a bad habit of sneaking up on you.
Avatar 3:56pm Wild Neil:

I'll bet Ted Nugent works out, but that is only a guess...he IS an outdoorsman too...
  3:57pm Cliff:

And he eats everything he hunts
Avatar 3:57pm KP:

Nice JA selection, Scott. THanks.
  3:58pm Cliff:

Avatar 3:58pm Wild Neil:

@Glenn-so they were really 140.
@ Cliff-In NM I met a hunter BBQing some antelope he shot...he offerered me some...it was better than the best prime rib I have ever had. Yum!
Avatar 3:59pm Wild Neil:

@Cliff-the Motor City Madman never did drugs? Wow! THATS a new fact for my files...
  3:59pm Cliff:

Sounds tasty
  4:00pm Cliff:

Yep, no booze either.
Avatar 4:00pm Wild Neil:

@oh man, it was A-MAZ-ING Cliff..wow....
Avatar 4:01pm glenn:

sure, but ted's an absolute lunatic.
  4:01pm Cliff:

Though according to Wikipedia he does support legalization of medical marijuana
Avatar 4:01pm Cecile:

I think it's the touring and actual performing that can even do in the clean living people. My dad lived like a rock star (if rock stars did metallurgy) until 50. He cut out smoking, and cut back on drinking, and even in his crazy days wasn't travelling for work near as much as even semi-retired rock stars. He made it to 81, but he also stayed home and got better after his periodic health scares. It seems to be because of outside or inside pressures musicians stay on the road a lot longer than they should.

re the nuge: ...even if he has to ship it in for sport.

No, he's a teetotaler. Didn't stop him for faking crazy to be classified as 4F during 'nam, though.
  4:02pm Polyus:

Ted has game farm. He hunts tame animals.
Avatar 4:03pm Cecile:

yes, he does. But I've heard he'll also bring animals in for special events.
Avatar 4:03pm glenn:

i don't think he was faking.
Avatar 4:04pm Wild Neil:

We have tame animals and eat them too...they are called chicken ranches and beef cattle farms if you eat any of these animals...
Avatar 4:04pm Cecile:

He actually soiled himself and didn't change his clothes for 2 weeks. Deliberately.
Avatar 4:05pm Wild Neil:

  4:05pm Cliff:

Eh, I don't blame him. Vietnam was an idiotic mistake
Avatar 4:06pm Cecile:

yes, Wild Neil, but we don't mythologize ourselves for eating a burger.

Cliff, I don't either, but his comments toward pacifists have been pretty horrible.
Avatar 4:07pm Wild Neil:

He sounds kinda like a shitter in some respects.
  4:08pm Cliff:

True, he is kind of a jerk to anybody expressing left-of-center sentiments
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

He darn near won the race for president in the Simpsons episode he starred in.
  4:10pm Dean:

He is a jerk to anybody expressing left-of-moderately-right sentiments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm northguineahills:

dafuq happened in the comments board?!!
  4:11pm Dean:

It's the name-calling, Ted-bashing segment of the show.
Avatar 4:12pm Wild Neil:

@NorthGunieaHill-I copied and pasted from the internet. Sorry to mess it up for you. I did apologize already in an earlier post.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm northguineahills:

Ok, I was going through the last 20 minutes and thought I was in some news aggregate politics tab. Carry on!
Avatar 4:14pm Cecile:

I just want to say even though I love all my musical heroes, they should lay off the touring if they are under the weather.
Avatar 4:14pm Wild Neil:

Hey Ronald Reagan, Jesse Ventura....Ted Nugent? Maybe who knows....
  4:15pm Cliff:

Nah, we just don't like Ted Nugent. Though I forget now why we were even talking about him....
Avatar 4:15pm Cecile:

someone brought him up as someone who is very healthy. Physically.
Avatar 4:16pm Wild Neil:

@Cliff-Rockstars are druggies and pervs, but not Ted. Will Ted live longer?
  4:16pm Cliff:

Oh right, and so he's not likely to drop dead soon. Got it.
Avatar 4:17pm Cecile:

wow, Signe Anderson passed on the same day as Kantner? Crazy.
  4:17pm Dean:

Unless of course he's felled by cat scratch fever.
  4:20pm Cliff:

Now I've got that song stuck in my head. Damn you, Dean
Avatar 4:20pm glenn:

i'd prefer to see him gored to death by a big horned sheep.
Avatar 4:20pm Wild Neil:

@Cecile-the odds are pretty low, right! Same age, same day, not married. Weird.
Avatar 4:21pm TDK60:

Diggin' the Don E.
  4:21pm Ike:

Some Onion knockoff has made its name on the article "Millions Mourn As Rocker/Activist Ted Nugent, Age 67, Found Alive". It continues to go around social media frequently.
Avatar 4:21pm Wild Neil:

Hey it was 4:20.
  4:22pm Dean:

Think Beethoven, Cliff. Fifth Symphony, for instance. Da-da-da DUM! That will purge the Nuge.
Avatar 4:22pm Wild Neil:

@Cecile-not married to EACH OTHER. THAT is what I meant.
Avatar 4:23pm Wild Neil:

Don Ellis reminds me of Zappa doing Jazz.
Avatar 4:23pm TDK60:

I think some Ellis musicians also played with Zappa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Andrew Waterloo:

There is definitely some Zappa flavouring here.
Avatar 4:24pm Wild Neil:

Oh, he was on Absolutely Free. I get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Scott Williams:

@Wild Neil: they both liked counting. this one's most in 9/4 and 9/8, I think
Avatar 4:25pm Wild Neil:

@Scott-thanks! I like Xenochrony.
  4:25pm Cliff:

Da-da-da DUM!
Da-da-da DUMMM!!!!

Da-da-da-DUM, da-da-da-DUM,
Da-da-da DUM, DUM, DUMMM!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Scott Williams:

Don Ellis was on Absolutely Free? Never knew that
Avatar 4:26pm Wild Neil:

@Scott-Wikipedia says he plays on Brown Shoes Don't Make It.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Scott Williams:

  4:27pm Dean:

My favorite Mothers tune, not counting all of Crusing with Ruben & the Jets! Says the guy wearing brown shoes.
Avatar 4:27pm Wild Neil:

Don Ellis is awesome.
Avatar 4:29pm TDK60:

Gotta go. Happy Black History Month.
  4:29pm Cliff:

Haha, I love this Bjork song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm Greg from ZONE 5:

WOW. Haven't heard this in AGES…
Avatar 4:31pm Cecile:

Don Ellis did some killer stuff with Don and Dewey too
  4:32pm Cliff:

Bjork is actually pronounced more like "byuurhhk" in Icelandic, which I learned when I studied Old Norse in grad school.
  4:32pm P-90:

Ol' Bjork-eyes is back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm coelacanth:

hmm. never heard that. i think i like her original stuff better.
...she's not making it a Bjork song; just a cover with little change.
Avatar 4:35pm βrian:

Like Hákarl, Bjork is an acquired taste.
  4:37pm Dean:

Hmmm, no clarinet credits at Discogs. Dudu Pukwana? This is beautiful.
  4:37pm Cliff:

My Old Norse teacher had us all try Hákarl, along with a shot of Black Death. It tasted....interesting.
  4:38pm Dean:

Nope, it's Kippie Moeketsi, per the back cover of the album.
Avatar 4:38pm Wild Neil:

I smoked Death cigarettes I found. Pretty good actually.
  4:39pm βrian:

Black Death? What's that like?
  4:40pm Cliff:

It burns all the way down. It lives up to its name.
  4:41pm Dean:

As does Bigfat's 8o8 Naga Jolokia Hot Sauce.
  4:42pm βrian:

Similar to aquavit? Aquavit is dandy for Bloody Marys
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Haha! That was priceless. "Football football football SYNTH!!!"
  4:43pm Cliff:

And I gotta wonder whoever first came up with the idea taking a poisonous shark, pissing all over it and burying in sand and leaving it to ferment for six months, then digging it back up and hanging it up to dry in a shed and eating it. And why they thought to do that.
Avatar 4:43pm glenn:

would you rather - eat hakarl or hang out with ted nugent for an hour.
Avatar 4:43pm Cecile:

Cliff because they live on a rock in the middle of the ocean with terrible winters.
Avatar 4:44pm glenn:

they were playing the long game, cliff.
  4:45pm Cliff:

Glenn - definitely would go with the hákarl.
Brian - haven't tried aquavit, but it's flavored with caraway so I suppose it's similar
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Devin B.:

This new Gate is awesome!
  4:45pm Marc15:

Sounds like another happy Joe Frank Episode
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Lovin it Scott!
  4:45pm βrian:

That shark is inedible for the same reason that coelacanth is inedible — too much urea. Hence the fermentation. Could we pee all over the Nuge and bury it for a few months to see if that helps?
  4:46pm Cliff:

"All of our sheep have frozen to death, we can't catch any fish, and we have nothing to else to eat. Let's try the deadly shark then"
  4:47pm Cliff:

That's actually half the plot to most of the Viking sagas
  4:49pm Cliff:

Just add Thor smiting some trolls, and everyone killing each other in revenge, and you've got yourself a hit
Avatar 4:50pm Cecile:

a friend of mine referred to Bermuda as "60,000 alcoholics stranded on a rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean".
Avatar 4:52pm βrian:

Well, they're not stranded if they have enough alcohol.
  4:53pm Cliff:

Brian, is it a proven scientific fact that Ted Nugent is inedible because his body possesses too much urea?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm Scott Williams:

OH! Gate is Michael Morley from The Dead C!
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Devin B.:

Yep! With the signature vocal style.
