Boing boing!

I have missed those moon monsters every week since the schedule changed

Avatar 8:09pm Joe McG:

Hey folks, hope you're having a nice evening. I'm here filling in for my pal MAC. Hope you'll stick with me as we listen to some country, some Indian sounds, and some blues/gospel.
Avatar 8:10pm Matt from Springfield:

Old Timey Surface Noise!

Hey Joe! Glad to be listening!
Avatar 8:10pm Matt from Springfield:

I've heard "Pan American [Blues]" before, this is a legendary harmonica piece from the '20s. I love it!
  8:10pm JakeGould:

Remember Abe Vigoda.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I presume that MAC has an old-timey snowblower that's like ninety years old. It'll be a couple more days until his driveway is cleared out.
Avatar 8:11pm Joe McG:

Ah, Jake, how can we forget him. I'll talk about that next mic break.
  8:12pm Listener Robert:

The amazing thing about this little stn. is that so many of you, both at the mic & behind the guys at the mic, are so well versed in so many types of recorded matter & have such resources to draw on that you can do something like this.
Avatar 8:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

WFM- yodel-ay-ee UUU...
Avatar 8:13pm Matt from Springfield:

@Ken HP: Like an old silent slapstick, it will probably be some big, tubey grammophone like contraption that won't start, and when it does, hardly moves through the snow. MAC will kick it, and then it will start zooming through the snow, chasing him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Ike:

Hello Joe!
Avatar 8:14pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

A nice surprise, this fill-in. Rare that I can tune in at this hour. Somehow a couple of snow-days turned into extra hours via telework. But headphones bring salvation. And harmonicas.
Avatar 8:14pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Jeezus, it's like the full gang up in this joint. MY PEOPLE...
  8:14pm Listener Robert:

I mean, could you imagine the sports talkers or irish-music DJs, for example, at WFUV taking over for Rich Conaty?
Avatar 8:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar 8:15pm Joe McG:

@Ken: Ha ha ha! Hey, Robert, Ike, RR63, Matt, Rev, Common, everybody!
Avatar 8:15pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

JOE: got anything with a classic BASS harmonica way up front? I've been wanting one for ages but they're freakishly expensive. Love that sound.
Avatar 8:17pm Joe McG:

@Rev: I LOVE that sound, too. If you think of one, let me know! Most harmonikeys from this era are more shrill in general because they were easier to record.
  8:18pm Listener Robert:

Could you imagine the real estate advice guys subbing for Jerry Hickey to give dietary supplement info on WOR?
  8:20pm Listener Robert:

Could you imagine anyone subbing for anyone else at WBAI, when half of them couldn't stand to be in the same room as the other half?
Avatar 8:20pm Joe McG:

There have been a lot of crazy fill-ins lately. Therese was just here earlier this evening, Meghan was on for Trouble this morning, and Micah did Dr. Gameshow last night. Not to mention all the weekend shows!
Avatar 8:22pm Matt from Springfield:

More locomotive harmonica!
C&O, that's local to me! Canals, and railroads! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm melinda:

Nice to hear you in this time slot!
Avatar 8:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Chesapeake & Ohio had quite a network (they in fact did connect w/ Chicago, among others). Great map of their many lines:
  8:27pm jon:

nice. great playlist as always joe.
evening noisy listeners
Avatar 8:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Chennai-a Twain?! ;D
Avatar 8:28pm Joe McG:

Hey melinda, nice to see you! Jon, thanks so much. Matt, it's great to see your little avatar on my playlist again!
  8:30pm JakeGould:

@JoeMcG: In light of Abe Vigoda’s passing, I would like to pass along a sexy Halloween costume idea in hopes someone will be brave enough to attempt it. Ready? Here it is: Babe Vigoda!
Avatar 8:30pm Matt from Springfield:

Century old Indian 78s! Amazing arty-facts!

@Joe: Too often I stay up and enjoy Therese on my Mondays off, but I really need to get up early for SN sometimes! It's so much better live and commenting! :)
Avatar 8:31pm Joe McG:

Jake, you're a sick man. I like it! @Matt: Would love to have you along, although I can see why your heart is with Therese. She's tops!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm melinda:

Love the Indian guitar w/scratchiness.
Avatar 8:33pm Joe McG:

This guy playing the water bowls is amazing!
  8:33pm jon:

wow. incredible sounds
Avatar 8:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Water bowls!!
Avatar 8:37pm Joe McG:

These sisters have such similar voices that you can hardly tell they are trading off lines....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm Stevel:

Joe McG in the eve!

Always engaging.
  8:39pm JakeGould:

Like this show. Always appreciate it when fill-in DJs make some effort to program material the regular audience would be into. Kudos!
Avatar 8:41pm bobdoesthings:

whoah fill-in time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm melinda:

That was lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Stevel:

I'm no Gramophone nerd, but these seem like pretty sharp recordings from this time. Were they heavily remastered (or whatever nerdy word applies)? (I'm a nerd).

I love the name at the end too.
Avatar 8:42pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Joe's original Surface Noise actually WAS this kind of material, one hour of old timey records, alternating every other week with MAC. The main difference being MAC is an acoustic recording purist, while Joe McG plays mainly early electrical recordings.
Avatar 8:42pm bobdoesthings:

hare krishna everyone.
Avatar 8:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

How far back into Indian Music would it have sounded about the same? Couple thousand years?
Avatar 8:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Hare Hare! bob!

Wow! Miss Gauhar JAAN even has a Wiki!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Stevel:

I'm always learning great WFMU history.

The Wiki is worth it for the photo alone. In the studio, I'd guess.

Avatar 8:47pm Matt from Springfield:

Yes, 2016 is stacking up to be another 2012, in famous people's deaths.

Wow, there have been false reports of Abe's death ever since '82!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm melinda:

I wonder if anyone will play the Barney Miller theme.
  8:47pm MONEYBAG$:

Abe appeared onstage with Phish a couple of years ago, dressed in a wombat costume
  8:47pm JakeGould:

@bobdoesthings: I prefer “www.abevigoda.com” because it’s simply his status. It was respectful of his life as well as death.
Avatar 8:48pm Joe McG:

@Matt: Very nice summary of my original show! @Stevel: The British and Indian engineers were doing amazing things in the teens in India, yes!
Avatar 8:48pm bobdoesthings:

@jake - ah, nice distinction. yes.
  8:48pm MONEYBAG$:

Brian Turner played some Barney Miller theme earlier
  8:49pm JakeGould:

Whoa! That website I linked to has a remix of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” for Abe Vigoda. www.abevigoda.com...
Avatar 8:49pm bobdoesthings:

undead undead undead
  8:50pm Listener Robert:

Interesting, Matt -- I remembered Thos. Edison's Atttic's alternating weeks with Antique Phonograph, but I don't remember Surface Noise's doing so.
  8:51pm jon:

that blind willie was great
Avatar 8:52pm Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Always happy to be a historian/archivist here!
@Robert: If you look at the SN playlists link, you might be able to piece out the schedule based on when Joe's earliest shows aired.
Avatar 8:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - this set - I have not words. The real stuff.
Avatar 8:52pm Matt from Springfield:

A Capella gospel!
  8:52pm Listener Robert:

I remembered the acoustic-electric divide between MAC & R. Crumb, though.

"Resort Vacations In Hell: A Travelogue"
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Poor Abe. I can picture him in the afterlife and all the people there are going "Come on, you don't belong here! You're not dead! It's just a rumor!"

Avatar 8:55pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Hi Joe! Such a fun show.
Avatar 8:56pm Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: HELL!!! At least that's what I heard..
Avatar 8:56pm Joe McG:

Well, we took Abe to Hell, but now the Storm is over, and all will Rise! Thanks for listening, everybody! See some of you bright and early on Monday morning!
  8:56pm Listener Robert:

Where was that he was recommending for eternity? I didn't catch the name, maybe he should've said it more.
Avatar 8:56pm bobdoesthings:

there was a guy on my subway home tonight who preached like this for the last 7-8 stops.. I tuned him out mostly.. until he got to a part where he was naming all the other religions and said something like "THEY ARE ALL FALSE!" and I burst out with a chuckle.
Avatar 8:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Joe! Great sets tonight!
  8:58pm JakeGould:

@bobdoesthings: Someone is going to punch you for doing that. That someone will be named… Jesus1

Thanks for the show, Joe!
Avatar 8:59pm bobdoesthings:

thanks joe!!
