You're welcome, Loretta - I had to do it.

Hey Clinton, good to see you here.

  9:18pm clinton hensley:

Anyone who has a problem with hearing copious amounts of David Bowie right now puzzles me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm efd:

  9:19pm JakeGould:

@efd: What happened to weather on the ones? What a rip off!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Pinups always got slagged but I loved it to pieces.

Me too.
  9:23pm clinton hensley:

@ Bark Sha - Agreed.
Avatar 9:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- great arrangements of definitive Classics - Ronson & Dunbar - c'mon...
  9:23pm Sal:

Sounds like it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm common:

so many good ones. like this!
Avatar 9:27pm Loretta:

& Mick Ronson was easy on the eyes!! LOL!!!
  9:29pm ScottC:

It's a clitche but when a world famous person dies they say " the world is a little more empty without ..." This one feels like that...
  9:29pm clinton hensley:

Have to say, Evan - Your homage sounds remarkably familiar to my little wake I had for Mr. Jones on Monday. Thanks, E. This is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm chris_in_space:

@Loretta: I always thought that Randy Rhodes modelled his look after Mick Ronson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm chris_in_space:

*Randy Rhoads, not "Rhodes"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Scharpling's Bowie collage last night was EPIC.
Avatar 9:31pm Loretta:

@Chris: I have to check that out..... thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Tome:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yes, the 128k stream is breaking up for me. Stopping & starting didn't help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm common:

choppy here.
  9:38pm ron in fla:

It's good now through iTunes, the pop up was giving me trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Pop-up player also choppy. Must be all the internet traffic due to people buying Powerball tickets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm joe:

Tune in seems ok now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm jmd:

stable now via iTunes as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm melinda:

Pop up seems better too.
  9:43pm Sybil:

Missing David Bowie so much... alll these days later. Thanks EFD for this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm chris_in_space:

Yes I was cutting up big time, seems fine now. Thanks for the updates.
Avatar 9:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Bowie was revered as a Gawd by the trendiest chic-est Hipsters - & was neck & neck w/ McCartney for richest Rawker (unitl Bono's Apple stock)
- but he never forgot he was a boho freak: he didn't get Huge until years into his career. He was the epitome of the British Art School (or @ least Art Class - Peter Frampton's dad his teacher in fact) Rawker...Nearly a Buddhist Monk &tc. ...a Mime...
  9:48pm JakeGould:

To be fair, the 1990s Bowie I could never get into. I just respect his pre-1980s stuff and “Let’s Dance” was what brought him to me as a teen in the 1980s.
  9:49pm Sybil:

Revolution Rabbit as usual caught the urge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm jmd:

Great interview and discussion. Thanks, EFD.
  9:53pm Sybil:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm common:

what jmd said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm melinda:

Really enjoying this interview.
Avatar 9:57pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

The Fortunes.
9:58pm Michael from the Left Coast:

a shout out for George Murray, Dennis Davis and Carlos Alomar! Hallelujah
  10:00pm clinton hensley:

Indeed! He had a presence that none of the MTV herd had. The "Let's Dance" video was an amazing political statement and a catchy as hell song. And agreed, sound & vision - you can't get more simplistic, yet visceral - calculated, but sincere.
Avatar 10:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Alienation is a major 20thCentury Theme, after all.
Avatar 10:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...reminded of his friendship w/ Lennon (I read the news today ohboy)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Alejandroool:

nice chat. I had just put sound & vision on right before tuning in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm efd:

ahh, thanks Todd!
Avatar 10:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Burroughs, Warhol in there, sure - all his pals...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Alex of Chicago:

Everybody's here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm efd:

I loved Dennis Davis back when I was a young drummer. (You too, Michael, I'm guessing.)

and still do, of course.
  10:04pm clinton hensley:

Hey Evan - Open Letter. Never enjoyed a radio show more than this. Great work.
  10:06pm JakeGould:

@RevolutionRabbitNov63: David Bowie sang that lyric about Uncle Floyd thanks to John Lennon who introduced Bowie to Uncle Floyd back in the day. They BOTH watched U68 and know who Oogie and Mugsy are. nj1015.com...
10:06pm Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD, I met a guy in a record store about fifteen or so years ago who was friends with Dennis Davis--that guy was the best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm efd:

you're very kind Clinton, thank you.
10:07pm Michael from the Left Coast:

but then again, Bowie played with great drummers, all the way through. Woody, Tony Thompson, Hunt Sales, and especially Andy Newmark--all top flight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm efd:

whoa, so cool Michael!
Avatar 10:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@JakeG: Yoko just said he was very close to the family.
10:09pm Michael from the Left Coast:

oh yeah, I forgot Aynsley Dunbar too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm jmd:

From your personal collection, EFD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm efd:

indeed, jmd! I have the German-language single too.
Avatar 10:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

He was one of the great bandleaders, among his multitude of attributes. Adrian Belew wrote about how Bowie kind of took him from Zappa (no love lost then Frank to David, 'pparently)...
Avatar 10:12pm dB from Oakland:

I have a "Rarities" disk with the German version of Heroes ("Helden"). I picked it up in London when I was maybe 13, on a family trip. The vinyl was very floppy. It had some other cool stuff on it.
10:14pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Revoluation Rabbit--did you read that bit that Belew wrote this week about the dinner he had with Bowie and Zappa? Terrific. Zappa knew Bowie was stealing Belew and Zappa kept calling Bowie "Captain Tom" with a two word prefix that was not happy birthday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm chris_in_space:

Speaking of musicians who worked with Bowie, I have to put a vote in for bassist George Murray. Man, he was great. What about the bass line in Ashes to Ashes? I mean, really.
Avatar 10:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Zackly that. He had no problem Belew finishing his tour - but not good enuff for Zappa, I guess...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm Tome:

10:16pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Dennis Davis playing bass on this one!
10:17pm Michael from the Left Coast:

and Carlos Alomar playing drums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm efd:

oh right, the Eno switcheroo!
10:20pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Bowie also performed Man Who Sold the World on that SNL show
Avatar 10:20pm dB from Oakland:

Avatar 10:21pm dB from Oakland:

I saw the live Bowie/Arias/Nomi SNL with my jazzbo uncle, who was appalled. I'm thinking my jazzbo uncle might like "Blackstar" though.

  11:13pm clinton hensley:

Wow. Thanks, Evan. Signing off after this beautiful song.
Avatar 11:16pm Danne D:

Hi EFD :) Hi Everyone :)

Just realized I never hit enter on this - been here for awhile :)

EFD now doing nested tributes - taking it to a new level though I wish it weren't necessary :(
  11:18pm JakeGould:

Good thing Bowie is now reasonably normal!
  11:20pm clinton hensley:

Ha! Rather read that than Pitchfork. Thanks for sharing that, brother. Goodnight.
Avatar 11:20pm Danne D:

For those wondering here are the powerball numbers for the comically ridiculous jackpot:

4-8-19-27-34 and powerball 10
Avatar 11:23pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Fantastic show tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm joe:

Well look at that I would have picked none of those numbers if I played. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm efd:

thanks Todd and Clinton, and thanks to all of you who've commented and/or listened so far tonight. I was probably the most nervous before this show as I've ever been for a non-marathon show, glad to see so many people enjoying it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm Stevel:

Listening, sick (I'll live.) Such a cool show. The Brett Smiley info and interview were wonderful. Seems like you get to know some very cool people. Bravo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm common:

great stuff, efd! and i loved your review of station to station. also have always loved golden years. heard it for the first time as a kid when it came out in my grandparents' car and just replayed that scene in my head crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm chad from oregon:

I missed the beginning of the show, so I apologize if this was mentioned on air. If you haven't seen it yet, the Tony Visconti interview in the coming Rolling Stone (and now on the RS site) isn't an easy ready, as he talks about his final interactions with David and his deathbed demos right up to the end.
Avatar 11:37pm Danne D:

I have to do something useful so EFD can do a tribute show to me - honestly you're like the tribute show of record, man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm efd:

hey Chad -- I haven't read it yet, but Chris O'Leary mentioned it when we were talking earlier. Sounds fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm chad from oregon:

Oh shucks, I just missed it then!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Julie:

@DonJuan Evan always does an excellent show
  11:53pm V Priceless:

Thanks efd! Who was the guy u had on a few months back who wrote that Bowie book detailing each song up to the mid 70's? Need to revisit that.
Avatar 11:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thurston Moore: ...'It brings to mind Bowie's early connection with Buddhist philosophy, practice and meditation, studying with Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Lama Chime RInpoche. Legend has it that David had considered a life as a monk but his teachers saw his light was needed beyond the monastery and advised him to follow it'...

Great David Bowie tribute show, Evan ! I really enjoyed the interview, too. It was all comforting to listen to as a long time Bowie fan.
