The music career that White-Out made possible. Happy 73rd, Mike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Parq:

Nifty story about Mike, told by Bobby Hart at his Monty Hall appearance earlier this year. The cover photo of their first album (see photo link below) shows the other three flashing big smiles and Mike pursing his lips. According to Bobby, the boys were dragged off the set for that photo shoot. Mike, impatient, told the photographer that he would tolerate only ten shots. What we see in that album photo is Mike uttering the word "seven".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Parq:

One more and then I'll stop. Is "Some of Shelly's Blues" the answer song to "Different Drum"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Amanda:

Your first statement is false, Parq! Mike joined the Monkees when (and because) he was broke. He didn't see his Liquid Paper inheritance until the late 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Parq:

Amanda, hon, my point exactly. That's when he started making the music he really wanted to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Amanda:

It could certainly be taken that way. I mean, if Different Drum is sung by the girl, which more famously it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Amanda:

Well, I guess then you mean two separate careers but I don't buy that they can be separated.

Sweet YOUNG Thing - toss the canes & romp !

Minor quibble. Rock on. Glad to have a chance to hear your show live for another week.

Amanda, did you ever listen to his Gilbert Gottfried podcast?
Avatar 12:39pm KP:

"Mary, Mary" is the most Monkee of Monkee songs.
Avatar 12:40pm Brian in UK:

Saw Mr N in '74 just him and Red Rhodes. His intro to 'Joanne' was 'This is a song about a cow'. Take it how you will. He was a bit relaxed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Artie Haywire:

Monkee mode, engaged.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm steve:

hi Amanda. love the new Simpsons Time podcast!
Avatar 12:44pm Brian in UK:

My manners. Hello Amanda.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Ha! I could tell by the hat and hairline that was Mike Nesmith. Happy New Year, Amanda and Drummers! It's my son's birthday today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Amanda:

@MB$ - NO, I STILL have not listened to it yet, I am a dweeb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Amanda:

@Brian UK -- That is great! I love "Joanne" even more now that I know it's about a cow. Unless he was referring to some girlfriend of his that way.
  12:50pm 87-plaid:

"The Girl I Knew Somewhere":
Fav romp, laundress Julie Newmar !

Mike told Gottfried the wool cap was to keep his hair outta his eyes when motorcycling; Mike said he BS-ed a reporter the Monkees sold 35mil albums, more than the Beatles in '67, and it got picked up as fact to this day
Avatar 12:52pm Brian in UK:

Amanda, you make a good point there, it was ambiguous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Amanda:

@Ken HP -- happy birthday to your son! An auspicious b'day indeed!

Thanks so much to you and @steve and all who are enjoying the Simpsons Time podcast!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Amanda:

@87-plaid: You know, I did pick up that "35mil" gossip even though I didn't listen to it! And I love that particular Monkee romp too.

  12:59pm Uncle Michael:

I'm loving the Papa Nez tribute, Amanda.

You actually have to hear him tell the whole story, though...it's more amusing than just the fact that he made the number up.

@Amanda: By chance, will any of The Wichita Train Whistle Sings be part of this Nez-tivity celebration?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Amanda:

The personal accounts about each Monkee I have heard are fascinatingly all over the place. It's like no two people can agree on which one is the nicest, coolest, or least nice or craziest or whatever. And I'm sure they change from day to day. The exception is that *almost* everyone says Micky is super nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Amanda:

@Gaylord, yes it will! Though I am always loath to take my copy out of its protective plastic bag and out into the world!!!
Avatar 1:17pm KP:

Saw Mickey's cabaret show earlier this year. I initially didn't want to go but ended up amazed, even after two Monkees concerts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Mike East:

@jk77 - before my time, I guess. Love when the talent is conscious of all that goes into making their performance a success.

Avatar 1:31pm Brian in UK:

Great show, Amanda.
Read a great interview with John Ware a while back. Think it might have been in an old Zigzag, coincidentally it was Zigzag's fifth birthday concert that Mr N was playing when I saw him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I'll bet a Simpsons/Monkees crossover episode would have been downright hilarious if they did it right. They both use off-beat humor quite a bit.

Thanks, Mike East

Avatar 1:42pm KP:

You said "fart."
Avatar 1:43pm KP:

Thanks, johnk77!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Gaylord Fields:

Nez once astutely surmised that the Monkees would have been a real band if everyone was on different instruments: Micky as frontman/guitar, Peter as lead guitar, Davy as drummer/vocalist (Davy was actually a decent drummer pre-Monkees), and himself on bass/vox.
  1:47pm Uncle Michael:

I've been in and out of the show. Have we saved the Texas prairie chicken yet?

  1:52pm "Monkees Myth #2":

"And that explains Mike"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Gaylord Fields:

@johnk77: This is from Michael Nesmith. After all, show producers Rafelson and Schneider weren't going to bury Davy behind the kit, so that's why Micky got the gig. Keep in mind that the Columbia Pictures–contracted Davy was the only "given" for the Monkees project.
Avatar 1:53pm ndbob:

excellent show Amanda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm steve:

great show!
Avatar 1:56pm Brian in UK:

Amanda, just found the link to the concert show CD that I mentioned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Amanda:

I love envisioning that alternate-universe Monkees. Much better than imagining Stills in Peter's place!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Amanda:

I am going to go a few minutes over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

We had a Monkees comic book when we were kids. The boys got a job at a zoo. Their boss told Mickey (I think?) to feed the lions and tigers, too. So he fed the lions some ants and was about to give the tigers their stew. Hoo boy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Mike East:

very educational show today. Thanks Amanda!
Avatar 2:00pm Brian in UK:

@Ken, amazing what is stored in the old grey room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Mike East:

@jk77 - Phishing trip went great! Tech's flights were cancelled so they had to drive down from VT last night and pack everything late night, though.
Avatar 2:02pm KP:

Thanks Amanda! You earned a wool hat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm listener james from westwood:

@Brian: Breakthrough in grey room ... cut word lines ... towers open fire ...

Smashing tribute, Amanda! Where else would we ever hear such a thing? Have a fab NYE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Amanda:
