Hard to engage in business as usual when the horrible is happening. But we need you Gary to bring the joy that you so masterfully bring. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Gary:

Avatar 7:08pm northguineahills:

Loving this Đỗ Tấn Sĩ , sounds like Ashtray Navigations (the band)
  7:08pm ?:

This sounds like Metal Machine Music!
Avatar 7:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The thing about Terrorists - whether foreign or domestic : it's like Woody Allen said about 9/11: for 1,000s there, it's a tragedy - but on the big map of millions - this is the exception - a pinprick - & they ain't done crap, man. They blow their wad - kill a few of the wrong people - & then they go down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Gary:

Hey there NGH and ? ... yes, it does, both of you :)
  7:10pm ?:

sorry, ? = Erik B in Minnesota
  7:11pm Jeff g.:

The news is making me sad. These pretzels are making me thirsty. And this music is making me happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Gary:

Whoa, Erik! Long time no, see ... how's everything going? I was just out in the great midwest ... North Dakota ...about a month ago. Saw the badlands for the first time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Gary:

Hey Jeff, you snuck in! And now I want pretzels.
Avatar 7:12pm ndbob:

@Gary the badlands are pretty amazing
  7:13pm Erik B.:

Were you "fracking" in ND?
Avatar 7:14pm ndbob:

@Erik I lived in Jamestown for five years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

Oh, man -- I talked with a woman who is a real estate broker out there who is *very* pro frack
Avatar 7:15pm ndbob:

so far from the fracking area
  7:15pm steve:

hey Gary and friends
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Gary:

Howdy Steve
  7:21pm Erik B.:

I think Vietnamese has the most tones of any language - 5? I think. Chinese has 3, I believe. I'm trying to see if I can hear anything like that in the music tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

I didn't know that, Erik; I know Lao has tones, but I didn't know Vietnamese did. It's hard for me to hear them in regular speech, let alone singing!
  7:24pm Erik B.:

I know. In native speakers, hear 0 tones. This guy is the Shaggy of Vietnam!
  7:25pm Dean:

Rap was invented by Francis Poulenc. He composed a ballet, the choral portions of which were later covered by a famous Hawai'ian pop singer: "Les Biches" and Ho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Gary:

Ha! Hey, you are so lucky to live so close to Minneapolis -- last time I was there, I was taken to that street (name of which I forget) with all of the Vietnamese stores and restaurants. Insanely great food and I found some music while I was there
  7:35pm Dean:

Probably Westminster in OC.
  7:35pm Dean:

Little Saigon it's called.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm Polyus:

Avatar 7:41pm Peter Nelson:

Hi Gary. Hi all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

I think you're right, Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Gary:

Hey, Peter! Oh, man, I have yet to DL most of that stuff you sent ... it's been a bit crazy here
Avatar 7:44pm Peter Nelson:

I listened to Midori...ta for that...oh boy, how did I miss them when they were active? Amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Polyus:

Thanks for the tip on Chicago - I like to go down there every so often to bum around, buy records, etc. But I wasn't familiar with the neighborhood you mentioned.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Gary:

Aren't they terrific? I had the oppty to buy actual CDs of theirs while I was in Japan, but I didn't, and didn't figure out what their music sounded like until I came home and DLed their catalog off of a couple of no-longer-active blogs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Gary:

It's worth going to, Polyus -- several stores and restaurants, and if you walk to the main street running perpendicular to Argyle, turn left, and go down a bit, there's a really great Thai market, also with music
Avatar 7:57pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! see everyone later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Gary:

Have a good night, Bob!
Avatar 8:03pm Mayuko:

Her Japanese was good! (Now this part is I guess in Vietnamese.)
Avatar 8:04pm Mayuko:

Yah! the first half of the song was Japanese.
  8:10pm DB:

chicken koobideh from the persian restaurant around the corner..excellent but filling!
Avatar 8:12pm Mayuko:

I googled it a bit - apparently Khanh Ly came to the Expo '70 in Osaka (the first world fair in Asia) and performed that song, seems like that's when/why she had the lyric half translated to Japanese for the audience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm Gary:

Thanks for confirming that, Mayuko! I always wondered :) ... and hey there, DB! I wish I had a Persian resto around the corner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Gary:

Whoa, thanks for that, Mayuko
Avatar 8:13pm Mayuko:

I should have got some Vietnamese food to go on my way home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Gary:

I need to know about some good Vietnamese restos in New York, because I haven't yet been to a super-great one
Avatar 8:16pm Sarah N:

Hi folks. I had delicata squash, millet and salad for dinner, yum.

Hey, I thought Dusty the chinchilla was cute but then I discovered red pandas!!! Make sure you're sitting down before you search them on the internet....fluff city!

Great show Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Gary:

@Sarah N red pandas *are* super cute. they also aren't really pandas!
Avatar 8:21pm Sarah N:

Told ya Gary!!! If you think you can handle it, try watching a video of tumbling cubs. Sometimes they stand up on hind legs with hands up. And they sleep with their tongues out (don't we all?)....

It took years for decent Vietnamese food to come to my hood, but w/in the last two years, a few places have opened up. Still mostly banh minh and pho, but better then nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm Gary:

  9:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Our favorite restaurant in NYC was a Vietnamese place. For a long time it was called simply Vietnam, but later it changed to Doyers--the name of the street it was on. The place closed about two weeks before we moved to Pittsburgh. We went there so often, the waiters would yell out in their partial Englsih, "Spring Roll Girl!!" when my daughter walked through the door. When the place closed, we saw that as a sign that moving was the right choice. Once in Pittsburgh, the restaurant that was recommended to us most often was a family-style Vietnamese joint that has come to be our favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh. Thank you for reading my little story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gary:

It was a beautiful story, Doug. Now, what's for dessert?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Ike:

I don't know of any really good full-service Vietnamese restaurants in NYC. There are lots of Vietnamese places but they're all kind of disappointing. But we do have awesome bánh mì here in Sunset Park, Bklyn.
Avatar 9:31pm northguineahills:

I saw Cuong Vu play at a gallery opening in 2001 that a Vietnamese-American friend had a room of pieces in. It was quite nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Uncle Michael:

I have one place in town where I can get pho. I'm grateful for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Gary:

Lucky you, NGH! Hey, Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Gary!
Avatar 9:42pm glenn:

it's not THAT cold. wait until february.
  9:43pm Dean:

Not making this up: there's a restaurant in Berkeley called Pho K&K. It's my favorite restaurant name to pronounce with a smirk. And in OC there's a pho restaurant named after my daughter (or so I tell her).
Avatar 9:44pm glenn:

or you could go in july, when it's 40 degrees celsius, with about 95% humidity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Gary:

Dean, what's her / the resto's name?
  9:47pm Dean:

Phở Olivia
Avatar 9:47pm northguineahills:

When I used to go to Mutek in Montreal (held in the last weekend in May), it would maybe be 23 C during the day (sometimes only 15 C) and around 10 C at night. Made NYC seem quite balmy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Gary:

  9:49pm Dean:

Yet never once did we consider naming our son McDonald.
Avatar 9:59pm northguineahills:
