This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

45 RPM singles from the incredible Exotica Project: exoticaproject.com

The Exotica Project is the product of the labor and passion of Dan Shiman, who also tends this fabulous garden of 45s: www.officenaps.com

Avatar 7:02pm ndbob:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Little Danny:

Needless to say I'm looking forward to this show. Evan rules.
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hey guys! Hyde, Carmichael, Bob! I think this is gonna be great, these tunes are kingly good
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Aw shucks! Welcome, Danny! You're the guest of honor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm Carmichael:

I need to put on my smoking jacket and mix myself a vodka martini.
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Oh you really should! Though rum would be more appropriate, if you don't mind my saying so
Avatar 7:07pm ndbob:

Yep Danny - I certainly think of you when I think of Exotica 45s:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Carmichael:

I was channeling Jack Cassidy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm JtotheK:

hi everybody! i'm happy to be able to tune in live tonight - normally i catch this program via the archive, it's always great!
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

Jack Cassidy is always welcome in this room
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

Hi there J to the K!
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

This one is nuuuuts
Avatar 7:26pm hyde:

if anyone needs me, i'll be outside naked and howling
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: well that's what I needed you for, so carry on
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

God this stuff is so good
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

Little bit o' Deano in this guy's style, weirdly
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

That last track was so sloppy, this one's so precise and lovely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Carmichael:

I found a live Danny Kapoi Trio LP at a garage sale the other day.
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

how is it? I've never heard that
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

Man o man: Yusef Lateef
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm JtotheK:

Felix and His Fabulous Cats -- cool name, cool track!
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

yeah that one was red-hot
Avatar 7:54pm hyde:

if Little Danny is still here just an FYI: the Penny West and Lucky Penny Trio tune in Nowhere Town is missing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm coelacanth:

Ahoy Cap'n Flash and explorers!
Avatar 7:58pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan and Danny = catch the rest on the archive
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

See ya Bob! Hello Coelo!
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

How are we all doing tonight? Gettin' steamy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Little Danny:

Evan: Definitely agree that Yusef was America's foremost proponent of exoticism and exotica in jazz. Also Lateef, along with Sun Ra, made explicit references to Les Baxter.

hyde: Thank you! Duly fixed.
Avatar 8:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...singles' lounge ?...
Avatar 8:07pm hyde:

@little danny no, thank *you*! that stuff looks amazing and these 45s that Flash is playing are killer too.
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Lateef really did! Some of the most explicit exotica quotes ever, really. I know Sun Ra admired Baxter, but I'm not sure I've ever noticed anything as explicit what Lateef did... but there's so much Sun Ra out there
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

Hey hey RRN63
Avatar 8:09pm hyde:

there's so much out there Sun Ra out there
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

Anybody heard that Sun Ra lecture at Berkeley? I just got it from Willard's Wormholes and have been listening to bits of it. It's, you know, OUT THERE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm coelacanth:

i love this 45s image; i love this show; i love my salad; i love these ripe olives; i love this relative luxury!
(...i don't love that i find it so difficult to get answers regarding dividing donation credit between different shows.)
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

This show loves you, Coe bro!

I'm not sure I can help with your query as I am total newbie to this stuff, but what do you mean, exactly? I think you can donate however much or little to any number of shows
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

and oh yeah, those are just Dan's labels shopped on top of a pic of one of my hawaiian shirts I took to use for a Mike Cooper-themed show a ways back
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

we'll hear every one of those 45s (from the image) tonight, by the way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm JtotheK:

@Flash Strap -- re: Sun Ra lecture -- glad you mentioned it...a friend emailed me about it last month, I totally forgot to give it a listen...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm coelacanth:

i asked Joe & he said the system can only divide a $50. donation up 3 ways; but now i think i may be able to give more and i don't know if that limit is because it can only be divided in $15. increments or because -only into 3,regardless of the amount.
(i'd like to divide it by 4)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm JtotheK:

and the link I was sent contains the reading list for his course ... quite a few books I should seek out.
Avatar 8:24pm hyde:

weird, it's so warm here tonight the tree frogs are out again. i thought the 25 degree nights sunday and monday put the kibosh on that.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

Ok, yeah, I can't help at all, C. Good luck and thanks for donating to WFMU, seriously. 'course, you got that swag for life so, you're basically royalty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Doug Schulkind:

Exotica Project rules! Explorers Room rocks!
Avatar 8:35pm Flash Strap:

Oh, Doug! YOU are the ruler who rules!
Avatar 8:38pm Flash Strap:

"to the pagan I love"

Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

It's devilish ward here too, Hyde! Amazing weather in this rotten city tonight
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

devilish warm, I should say. "ward" sounds like I have weird plans for Robin, Boy Wonder
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm coelacanth:

i tried. i have to contact Joe again.
- i'm safer waiting 'till next week anyway!
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Just went past the halfway point! Let's keep rolling to 200%, buy WFMU a new juicer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm coelacanth:

maybe i'm wrong, but "to the pagan i love" seems like -then it was considered a taboo; but now it would be scandalous.
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

thanks Dan, as if you haven't contributed enough you lion
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

the next song is seeeeeeexy, get ready
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

I mean, this one actually borders on fetish art, in a way. in a good way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm JtotheK:

oh my...getting quite hot n bothered over here...
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

This one, man... holy shit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Little Danny:

Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

How could it NOT

Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

and this track, I mean, wow... what a freaky thing
Avatar 8:57pm hyde:

wow, this song
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

This is one of your favorites, if I recall, Dan. It's so good
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

This is the one, I think you could argue, that's sung from the perspective of the Other lusting after the Western figure.

Which isn't to say it's not a Western fantasy: it is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm JtotheK:

I'm starting to realize I may as well star the entire playlist. Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Holy schmoly! Explorers Room is a scant $220 from zonking the goal! ZONK people ZONK! Do it directly here: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Little Danny:

Thanks Doug!

"Left Arm of Buddha:" HELL YES. A side that I'll never tire of.
Avatar 9:21pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...these put me in mind of 'Beware of the Blob'...
Avatar 9:21pm northguineahills:

I made it!
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

@ Danny: Me. Either! One of Baxter's great oddities... how did it never make an LP?
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hi Hi NGH! Lots more to come!
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

Danny, what;s the deal on that Black Sleep track? It's so relatively bizarre, I'm really curious if you know its secrets
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Some hints of Taboo here
Avatar 9:44pm hyde:

huh, the cordovox. huh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Danny, just sent you an email...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Little Danny:

Can't remember if you mentioned it, but "Black Sheep" is a Les Baxter composition. Its flipside "Robin's Mambo" appeared on Martinez's Dancing On The Sunset Strip LP (featuring pianist Eddie Cano & bongo king Jack Constanzo), so it seems likely they were involved. I don't know. Tony Martinez cut some other killer Latin jazz sides with an exotic feel, including "Pharoah's Curse," "Mambo Celeste" and "Ican."
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

That's a crazy Baxter composition! I wish I had more of his one-off weird stuff like that
Avatar 9:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Fascinating stuff. Appreciate it.
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

Is it really listed as Black Sheep?
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

I love this one SO M U C H
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm coelacanth:

this is beautiful!
Avatar 10:00pm Flash Strap:

This is basically an instrumental version of the title track from Eden's Island
Avatar 10:01pm northguineahills:

Thanks Flash! Sorry I've been making potato pesto pasta.
Avatar 10:02pm Flash Strap:

that doesn't sound like something to be sorry about
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Once again, Flash Strap has taken us to uncharted magnificence! And we're in EXTRA time yet again. This is the only radio show that has no set ending time. It's just over when the slight jostle of boat against pier wakes us from our reverie. Captain Flash has brought us safely home again.

Please give a thoughtful and beloved donation to WFMU in the name of this marvelous endeavor! Do it here, do it now: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 10:05pm Flash Strap:

Was listening to this and wondering where I'd heard it before; it's called "Le Berber" on the Afro-Soultet's Afrodesia. The 'Tet share some members with The Orph. 4
Avatar 10:06pm Flash Strap:

Thanks Doug!

Do as the man says, gentle people!
Avatar 10:10pm hyde:

ok, this was amazing and all, but it's time for me to fade. see you all around the streams & etc. thanks Flash!
Avatar 10:11pm Flash Strap:

You hung in there as long as anyone could expect, Hyde. Sweet dreams and off to Lotus land with you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm coelacanth:

Doug - i already emailed Joe, but do YOU know the answer to my query stated earlier here? (@8:23)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm coelacanth:

g'night hyde! you all howled-out?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm coelacanth:

there was a tune somewhere between 8 & 9 that is the basic melody of dj Keili's show's theme song. when i listen to the archive i'll figure it out,i hope.
Avatar 10:19pm Flash Strap:

So glad you're still with us, C.-man
Avatar 10:20pm Flash Strap:
