Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Amanda:

It is ridiculous that I haven't mentioned this yet, but: YOUR PET could be the WFMU MASCOT if you pledge to our silent fundraiser! Before October's end, use the pledge widget at the top of this page to make a pledge... and then you can upload your pet's picture and get him/her in the running. OK to use someone else's pet or a wild/feral animal if you don't have your own.
Avatar 12:02pm Roberto:

Yep, my kittehz is up in there already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm doctorjazz:

Can we campaign for the FMU Mascot? Vote for Ozzie and the Jets! (you can also write him in for president).
Hi all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm listener james from westwood:

Cheering the singles, jeering the shingles! The latter are indeed a MFer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Amanda:

@doctorjazz, though the final decision is up to management I don't see how campaigning could hurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

What color wristband do we wear to support the VZV sufferers? Is lavender still available?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Jeff Golick:

Serve those platters, @Amanda!
Avatar 12:07pm Mayuko:

Hallos Amanda! Finally tuning in live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Uncle Michael:

I've been waiting over 8 minutes for my pupu platter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Amanda:

I know some of you must be aware already of the mascot contest, but I'd be especially super-remiss in not mentioning it for those who didn't realize...

Hey, hi Mayuko!!! Welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm listener james from westwood:

Hooray for Everything!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Amanda:

Don't worry Roberto, I gotcha. Hey Charlie! Hey Dominick!

Disco Tex was a gift from Kurt!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I hope no one here has received the gift of varicella zoster virus from anyone. Eww!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Dammit! What Okasa said…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Webhamster Henry:

This is real single-y!

"Gimme red lipstick and a bright poppy rouge. A shingle-bob haircut, and a shot of good booze."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm listener james from westwood:

Not sure I've heard this Donovan before. One of my favorite aspects of WFMU is the frequency at which I can say, "I've never heard this before."
Avatar 12:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yay Donovan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Charlie:

was just gonna say that, Rabbit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Uncle Michael:

Does you boyfriend know about this man you live with, Amanda?
  12:30pm Listener Robert:

Thanks for calling att'n to the photo. I'm delighted to see the WCBN box. Are the contents related to what's on those box end labels, or are they just decoration?
  12:31pm Listener Robert:

Is the bottom photo because you or someone close to you has had shingles?
Avatar 12:33pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This is (perhaps) an interesting question...I don't think I ever bought a 45 new...

Avatar 12:36pm northguineahills:

BTTF is what made me get Huey Lewis and the News. It was the third record I ever got. I was in fourth grade, wow!
  12:37pm sugarwerewolf:

I am glad you clarified, Greg, I was going to be a little upset if you called me a he!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Oh yeah...Back to the Future Day is today.
  12:39pm sugarwerewolf:

I know someone who recently had shingles in some very horrible places.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Amanda:

Ha, I was committed to the pun but I went through some terrifying (and some also NSFW) photos of shingles before settling on the diagram. Luckily I have never had it. YET.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm listener james from westwood:

A local (NYC) radio station with "Power" in its name used to drop the name and frequency # into the BTTF song over Huey's "Power of Love"s in the middle. Awful, awful. Enough to send you to the transmitter with a pound of C4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm listener james from westwood:

There's a shot for VZV, and though it's pricey, from what I've heard re the pain and nuking of productivity, it's worth every penny.
  12:48pm sugarwerewolf:

@listenerjames: as soon as I am old enough, I am so getting the shingles vaccine. Do Not Want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm doctorjazz:

good song for the current discussion, "asked my family doctor just what I had..."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Webhamster Henry:

The Hollies are always welcome.
  12:55pm Listener Robert:

Oh. "Shingles"...45s...I didn't know that one, thanks. I did get herpes zoster, though, 3 yrs. ago, & wound up w some apparently permanent post-herpetic neuropathy in my left hand. The shooting pains gradually became less & less frequent, rare now, but numbness & weakness has continued.
  12:57pm Listener Robert:

Oh, wait..."shingles" is NOT existing slang for records owing to their physical form, but you're just punning on "singles"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm listener james from westwood:

Interesting that the FDA and CDC are split on the vaccine's starting age: 50 vs. 60.
@Robert: Hoping the remaining symptoms fade along with the pains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Amanda:

Yes! That's it. Sorry -- I realize the humor might be a little macabre especially for someone who's had it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Artie Haywire:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Charlie:

Avatar 1:02pm johnforz:

plus connect four!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Charlie:

"the road to my horizon" is never-ending, n'est-ce pas?
  1:03pm Listener Robert:

Oh, heck, I make jokes about stuff like that all the time, Amanda. I didn't learn until recently, however, that both "shingles" & "zoster" derive from words for "belt", for the dermatomal distribution of the condition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My cousin used to sing it as a parody: "Like a ground up cowboy."
Avatar 1:04pm ndbob:

indeed Charlie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Charlie:

hey bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm doctorjazz:

Shingles and Zoster are the same thing (technically, shingles is the disease, herpes zoater is the virus that causes the disease).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Charlie:

this song is surprisingly pleasing (defranco fam)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Amanda:

Not glad that I have had chix pox, meaning I can contract shingles. But VERY glad that all us jokers are on the same page re: off-color disease humor!
  1:12pm P-90:

@Listener Robert: good use of "dermatomal"!
@DJ Amanda: loving "Shingles Going Steady"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm doctorjazz:

Should be, "shingles going shteady"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm listener james from westwood:

Pop song rules: Don't go off to war. Don't ever ever drive. Both ways lead to ruin.
  1:16pm P-90:

@Dr. Jazz: just to clarify,"herpes zoster" is a name for the disease: the virus itself is the "VZV" (chickenpox) virus.
Avatar 1:17pm Okasa:

Off-color disease humor? "Dr Hibbert should be sued for malpractice. All of his patients clearly have severe jaundice."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm listener james from westwood:

I can't remember whether I had chicken pox or measles, but I know I had one of them. Would be good to know.
  1:17pm P-90:

Wow! disaster strikes so quickly on 45s...
Avatar 1:18pm ndbob:

@LJFW I had both - and mumps
  1:18pm a listener:

Billy Don't Be A Hero was a hit in the UK for a cabaret band called Paper Lace a few months before this.
Avatar 1:18pm northguineahills:

My father picked up shingles while camping in Virginia 17 years ago. He gave it me, and I gave it to my gf, and b/tn the two of us, we were the vectors for about 40 of our friends. Really fun seeing the trail of the mites take in your dermal tissue. Good thing it's relatively easy to treat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

A man walks into the doctor's office early one morning and announces that he has shingles. They have him fill out paperwork, wait for an hour and finally lead him to the doctor. They give him a battery of tests, but find no evidence of any shingles. As they're about to close for the day, a nurse asks him one last time where are the shingles. "They're outside on the truck. Where do you want them?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm doctorjazz:

Picky picky, VZ stands for Varicella Zoster Virus, and it is all pretty much interchangeable in common usage. The virus is part of the Herpes family of viruses. They hang out in the nerve root as in the diagram, and can flare up years later.
  1:19pm P-90:

Billy definitely should have taken that advice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Stanley:

Now ELO, there's another band I'm not sure I love or hate!
  1:20pm MONEYBAG$:

Missed Centerfold earlier, but that was a record I brought in to play for show-and-tell in second grade. In retrospect that may have been inappropriate.
Avatar 1:20pm northguineahills:

It took about a week before I knew what was wrong, so then I abstained from shaking anyone's hand. About two weeks to totally eliminate it.
  1:20pm a listener:

I had mumps 2 times when a child. I'm a medical miracle. Or freak. I'll let you decide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Uncle Michael:

Don't make any rash judgements, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Uncle Michael:

two weeks, NGH? was it very painful?
  1:22pm MONEYBAG$:

Remember Alf? He's back, in pog form
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm doctorjazz:

Humor is breaking out all over!
Avatar 1:24pm northguineahills:

@a listener: I had mumps 10 years ago when I was in my 20s when it was going around NYC. My health insurance hadn't kicked in, and neither had my sick days, so, I still went to work. I had eat only liquid food since my tonsils were the size of lemons. I happened to have some leftover antibiotics which were the right type for the mumps (I asked my father, who's a physician). Something that just makes my immune system stronger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Wait a minute! This sounds like rock and/or roll!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Greg from ZONE 5:

I am familiar with the works of Pablo Neruda.
  1:26pm MONEYBAG$:

I actually thought about that foam dinosaur the other day! Someone gave me a pair of boxer shorts compressed into a tiny cube that needed water to expand. Worked about as well as the dinosaur.
  1:26pm Listener Robert:

Northguinea, that's a very interesting story, given the conventional wisdom that shingle is not contagious. The virology & pathology of varicella zoster has long been a mindfuck to me. Hard to understand how a vaccine can work in a patient who already has had the temperate virus resident for decades.
Avatar 1:26pm northguineahills:

UM: whoops, I meant, scabies, not shingles. Although, I did have a very minor case of the shingles, from the dormant virus of having the chicken pox when I was a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm Rich in Washington:

this was one of the most memorable Simpsons episodes for me. Now I wanna watch it!
Avatar 1:28pm northguineahills:

My father, on the other hand, had a severe case of shingles thanks to me having chicken pox (it was shortly after, could be a coincidence, since he did work in a hospital). He was in bed for over a week.

I am familiar with the works of Pablo Neruda

@ngh I'm in the UK, we still had a decent NHS at the time. Funnily enough both times I was at my mum's younger sister in Devon. I can remember them hiding the foul tasting medicine in strawberry's and me figuring this out, eating the strawberry's and hiding the tablets. The second time I was force fed them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm doctorjazz:

Hmmm, scabies, shingles, let's call the whole thing off!
