Emily in the house! Hey, lady! ... Brian, you're the best, thx!
  12:32pm Listener Robert:

This shows the benefits of a deep bench as WFMU has, as opposed to the Jr. PeeWee football team the team I coach played against yesterday that ran out of subs & so ended the game with almost 2 mins. left in regul'n time.
  12:33pm Listener Robert:

It's OK, they were trailing us 0-21.

Avatar 12:38pm Parq:

A small personal remembrance. When I was a kid, I used to respond to exasperation by over-dramatically moaning "Why me?" My first girlfriend used to respond to it by singing this Kristofferson song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

Yes Brian...all the time. Love it. It's a moussaka day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Zach:

that bgm before was amazing
  12:42pm Listener Robert:

Brian, our Cardinals already beat the Jets 21-0 yesterday. But that's in the Jr. PeeWee div. of the Bronx Warrior Football League. No ref knockdowns in our game.

Yes, it was Touch of Evil by Wells - longest opening shot in film history at one point.
Avatar 12:46pm Pseu Braun:

Sunday morning Mo!
Avatar 12:47pm Monica:

Yes, Touch of Evil!! Thx, mtaTony, CB1, kym!!!
  12:47pm Listener Robert:

They make a big deal about long-duration shots in movies. So what? They're nowhere near as long as an avg. scene on stage, where there are no re-takes.
  12:47pm middlebun:

Lotta three/four. You guys dancing?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Brian in UK:

Birdman had several long shots but none as gripping as the opening of Touch of Evil. Was it Tijuana?
Avatar 12:53pm Monica:

greetings, xtina! UM, wow! Such a beautiful area. Emily, thx for film tip too....lamchops, what it is?...
Avatar 12:54pm pcnyc:

First I was bummed. But lo, there was Roxy Music and now Julee Cruise! Very, very nice indeed, Miss Monica!
Avatar 12:54pm CDToaster:

@Robert: I quite agree with you about needless big deals being made about long opening shots in films, but I never heard that phrase associated with the opening shot of Touch of Evil which not only was the longest shot in history, it was also the GREATEST single camera roll of all time. Your comment leads me to wonder if you've ever seen it? I mean, if you had, there's really little to say about it except, "Wow" or "cool."
Avatar 12:55pm Monica:

pcnyc - great to have u here!
Avatar 12:57pm CB1:

Mo - Starting to!
Avatar 12:57pm pcnyc:

Fanx! And the Marlena Touch .gif is icing on the cake. Happy Sunday, girlie!
Avatar 12:59pm CDToaster:

@Brian: I've viewed the film many times and regret to say I believe the town's name is never mentioned but being a little boarder town run by "The Grandes". Guess I'll have to watch it AGAIN just to be certain!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Mike East:

long takes in film aren't achievements of actors, so much as the director, cinematographer, director of photography, lighting, sound, etc...many factors involved. Stage is a different thing totally. I wouldn't compare the two.

Thanks for filling in Monica. This is a very important slot for me, and you're doing a smashing job so far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Uncle Michael:

Good god. This track is a freaking home run. Are you my sister from another mother?
Avatar 1:02pm CDToaster:

@Mike East: Perfectly put and totally true - non-comparable issues.
Avatar 1:02pm Monica:

UM, must be that green water in the chicago river.

I couldn't ask for a more soothing, gorgeous, cinematic soundtrack to my Sunday. Everything you're playing is divine. Thank you!
  1:08pm StuBot:

Hey Monica, at first I was dismayed, then delighted when I realized it was you filling in- your show bookended with Gaylord was the best Sunday wind down, love your style, you're sorely missed by me. You were replaced by a clicks and pop dj...sigh.
  1:09pm StuBot:

...replaced by a clicks and pops white noise sorta DJ that they usually reserve for midday when no one is available. .. sorry duder.
Avatar 1:10pm Monica:

Right back at ya, StuBot!... Yo, djsheilab - and welcome to the wfmu airwaves!!!..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Wait... go back! How many saxophones?
Avatar 1:11pm Parq:

FB tie-in.
Avatar 1:11pm CDToaster:

Auntie Mo, I'll never forget the tag-team show you did with Auntie Pseu playing nothing but great disco from back in the day - one of the best songs you spun was "Boogie Motion" by Boris Midney. I hadn't heard that gem is decades. What a wide repertoire of taste you have! Sweet voice, too.
  1:11pm StuBot:

how do we get you back? I would listen to you do your thing all day.
  1:13pm StuBot:

Maybe clickypoppy white noise guy would do the midnight shift and we can have you back? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm annie:

aackk! i was listening to opera, glanced at the clock!!!
  1:17pm Greg From Brooklyn:

Praise the Gods... Is it true?!
Just tuned in and heard 'I want to be sedated'. It must be Monica. And here you are. Been too long!
Can we start a Kickstarter to get you back?
  1:19pm Listener Robert:

CD Toaster, I'll do you one better: I've seen the movie named for/based on (sort of) it: "Whisper of Evil", a Strathman-Lindelof prod'n in 8 mm sound & color. It's had very limited screenings. It included the 1st screen appearance of later C-SPAN macher Brian Lamb in the role of the DJ.
  1:19pm Linda Lee:

Monica! fantastic show! lovin it! how can we get your here every week?
  1:20pm Linda Lee:

how can we get your *show* here every week?
  1:20pm P-90:

Just fyi film buffs, the Touch of Evil story was set in Tijuana, the locations (including the opener) were Venice, CA (beach town in Los Angeles). No one made a big deal about the long opening shot at the time, it wasn't promoted by the studio or anything. It was Welles working with a professional Holllywood crew again after years shooting on shoestring budgets in Europe. He was just enjoying doing things wth those resources, like the long credits shot. And believe it or not, while it was a challenge to himself to do it that way, it was also meant as a time and money-saving strategy; several minutes of sepearate set-ups for a title seguence would have taken longer than that one long shot, which was blocked, rehearsed, and shot pretty quickly. Welles was being creative but also showing Universal and the other studios that he could be a "good citizen" and do things economically...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Brian in UK:

Has Holly taken some Miriam syrup? Not a bad thing. New album out this week, folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the plug, Monica!

I'll be in Chicago on Wednesday. Woo.
  1:21pm Listener Robert:

Well, Mike, in some cases a long take in a movie is a huge thing. I'm thinking of the one in "Gangs of New York", following the line as the immigrants enter & are processed into the armed services, then onto another ship, then the other other ship coming back w the body bags.
Avatar 1:24pm Monica:

hi ho, annie!!! and greg from brooklyn !!! and linda lee!!!
  1:24pm Listener Robert:

Did "Touch of Evil" have a zombie mummy like "Whisper of Evil", huh? Did it have a shot of an actual silo fire, like "Whisper of Evil"? Did it include directions to adjust the projector to compensate for when the battery in the camera got weak, like "Whisper of Evil"? I didn't think so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

Staples shoot straight to my pleasure centers...like eating ice cream or well...you know...
Avatar 1:27pm CDToaster:

@P-90 - Thanks for the info.
@Robert - Thanks for that - I'm gonna view that film again today and pay more attention.
No, Touch didn't have any of those things. I guess you should view it sometime. Whisper sounds interesting - you're lucky to have seen it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm common:

good afternoon! great music for this sunday, monica
Avatar 1:31pm Catsilk:

I'm here! Just heard through the grapevine that you're on now. Thank the Lord, hallelujah!
  1:32pm P-90:

The long Touch of Evil" opener was made a celebrated thing by critics and other directors over the years. The "long, uninterrupted take" has been around for a long time, but has only been fetishized in recent decades by De Palma, Scorsese, etc. There's a notable continuous opening shot at the start of Julien Temple's 1986 "Absolute Beginners". And of course, Hitchcock's "Rope" was a feature done as a continuous shot.
  1:32pm Listener Robert:

I know only of the shot of dinner at the long table in "Touch of Evil"; I think I might've seen the entire movie once, but it didn't impress me that much. A LOT of the movies that movie buffs rave about, especially those Orson Welles ones, don't impress me as much as others, though I've yet to see "F for Fake", which seems from its descriptions like I should enjoy it.
Avatar 1:33pm Catsilk:

Yay, a Monica show to listen to in the car on repeat all week from the WFMU app! Cheers to all in da house!
  1:33pm Linda Lee:

i'm an fmu listener since '85. miss you! & dare i say the station needs more great lady DJs?
Avatar 1:34pm Monica:

Hola, Catsilk and Common! Yay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm annie:

we just watched that last week.... my housemate fell asleep.. i loved it...i can see how MD loved that role, SO vampy, a real charicature. (SP)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Brian in UK:

"Orson About" with the Marx Brothers was over rated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm Uncle Michael:

Is this their Deep Purple followup?

In '63 Roy Hamilton released "Let Go."
Avatar 1:36pm Catsilk:

I see you got into some nice Monica classics today: Memories of Green, Bruised Orange, Running in the Green Grass, and, and, and...
  1:39pm timurf:

So nice to hear you spinning on a Sunday again! : )
  1:39pm P-90:

Welles made that shot work like an "overture" to the movie. And he makes a "cameo appearance" himself in that shot that prefigures the central arc of the story.
Avatar 1:40pm Parq:

Marching band music always makes me smile.
  1:40pm Gaylord Fields:

Big love to Mo from NOLA!
  1:41pm Listener Robert:

"Gangs of New York" had not only that long shot, but loads of other great things. The story wasn't much, but who cares? It had a great laugh that I got only after I thought about it a while: Abe Lincoln on stage when somebody else gets shot in the audience. (They must've been taking turns.) The Lewis character's lines were great, reminiscent of Leo Gorcey as Stich Mahoney. The closing montage sequence, which theoretically was a nothing, was mind-blowing. The movie was full of things that make me think about hx; when I bicycled on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, my mind was drawn to the anti-cholera spray truck in that movie.
  1:42pm Linda Lee:

Any nice covers of the Jackson 5's 'I Want You Back'? pretty apt for the show today!
  1:43pm Linda Lee:

off to do the farm chores .. keep it coming Monica! beautiful set so far.
  1:43pm Andy Kidd:

Hey Monica your back !!! Tuned in on the inter web from the UK :-)
  1:45pm Listener Robert:

Plus, it had really scary fight scenes, almost as scary as those of "Gladiator". The fights between the fire companies, between the police organiz'ns, the draft riots...so much hx caricatured in such a package.
  1:50pm P-90:

Les Paul used to do a killer instrumental version of "Whispering". And The Jerry Garcia Band did an amazing version of "Don't Let Go."
  1:51pm Jim in Pulaski, NY:

Great show! Happy to hear Monica on a Sunday! Best fill in for Jones and X Ray possible. Sweet sounds filling the air up here in Northern New York. Really enjoyed that Staples Singers tune on hammer and nail. Thanks
  1:52pm Jim in Pulaski, NY:

(Back on Sundays that is!)
Avatar 1:52pm Monica:

GAYLORD!!! Hope you're having a blast there!!..howdee, andy and timurf! glad to be had... sorry, linda, i'm strapped for J5 today....Les Paul can't go wrong with anything!... Right back atcha, Jim in Pulaski!!!!
  1:52pm P-90:

There SHOULD be a group called The Staple Sisters.
  1:54pm foofs:

UK here also. I fear WFMU is suffering a refugee crisis, Brit listeners swarming, what with the determined campaign to make the BBC so shit and commercial that it can be abolished without sentiment.
On this station, the fill-ins are so lovingly crafted that they keep being better than the shows they fill in for. So instant love for Monica, who I hadn't heard before.
  1:55pm Gaylord Fields:

@P-90: I only you had an Easy button to push, you could make that happen.
Avatar 1:55pm Hugh C:

Well, Good Afternoon Miss Monica!
What a pleasant surprise to wake up, at noon & turn on the Bose, expecting the boys, and instead, I'm hearing all these sweet tunes. Tunes that were AM pop songs, when I first knew what radio was.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm Mike East:

steppin' out for a Sunday stroll, but thought you should know, Monica - you get the quite rare seal of approval from my wife, who usually has to put up with me blasting Jonesy religiously every Sunday. Lovely show. Thank you.

What determines whether a music genre is a “core” versus a “wave?”
Avatar 2:42pm Jeff:

Grindwave is the next core.
  2:43pm JakeGould:

Wavecore = Genre.
Corewave = Something that happens on “Star Trek” where Geordi LaForge advises Captain the crew should abandon ship.

i like waves better than cores.
  2:51pm JakeGould:

So maybe “Normcore” is a wave? Like “Normwave?” And “Sea Punk”… Wait! There are waves, cores and punks… Gotta sit down for while.
